Good Morning! Happy to be here this morning to discuss Summer PD with
morning, Mark! Welcome back!
Good (early) morning from Southern CA!!
Good morning Nothing says 'teachers love learning' like talking about Summer Prof Dev!
doing well- by the way, thx for the Mystery Skype back in Sept. voted Favorite Event by my students-
Q1 What guides your summer professional development? Cost? Location? Topic?
Oh, yeah. I'm in California.
Good morning only 3 days left at then onto for new job!
a1 Cost is a big factor, but scheduling is hard to manage sometimes too.
A1 Cost seems to be the big factor for me. I go for free, like edcamps!
A1 Definitely cost, but usually can get reimbursed. Location next, can't travel too much. any topic is ok. I love learning!
Q1: Cost for sure, but also my availability and willingness to give up family time for it.
true! I found out about the workshop on Friday, had to cancel a dr appointment but it was worth it!
A1 I guess it's cost. Switching schools and I don't know what the PD reimbursement policy is so it's on my own nickel.
Free is good! So bummed I'm missing the June edcamps and because I'll be traveling
A1 I like to choose summer PD based on what is timely and applicable to my current practice and interests
A1: Dates and location are my two main factors.
Cost definitely biggest one- don't mind driving couple hours if need be though.
Marcie! Are you ready for your next adventure??
A1: Where if fits in schedule and how it fits with needs
Congratulations and all the best!
Good morning everyone! Seem to be having tech problems today....seems par for the course for me this week.
. Hi Annie! I will be in state this week for a conference. Then ISTE
A1 I like picking Summer PD that I can work on in the summer to be ready in August.
A1: need, value, time, and how it fits with summer PD. educator-household is fun but can be tricky w childcare
Q2 How do you search for summer PD?
A1: cost/location are always a factor but topic is far more important. I look locally, online, & near family I'll visit
A1 cost, schedules, topic.
Wishing you a smooth transition! They are lucky to have you!
A2 Twitter and my PLN! PD sometimes finds me!
A2 Online. Look for PD courses through , Edco Collaborative, and Salem State Collaborative.
a2 mainly by listening to what my PLNs are chatting about
A2: Usually I don't search! I hear about PD on twitter! :)
A2 Online - Twitter, PLN tells me about good ones too
awesome! Living the PD life!
A2: I rely on word of mouth, my , and all those "pesky" emails that flood my in-box the last two months of school.
Have you found many good ones through email?
99% of time: PLNs. Sometimes will find something good from an e-blast from professional organizations-
A1 all of it...This summer all my PD is in the heartland, some free, some inexpensive.
Great answers for Q2! Get ready to dream for Q3!
A few decent webinars is all but it counts.
A2 I look for GAFE and CUE events (love CUE Rockstar Camps). Don't have a good resource for religious studies PD.
A2 We host a summer PD institute at my school, so I more or less usually pick from that..lunch is provided too!
Forgot about that ... I have found webinars from email. Any learning counts
Annette Jones, NCEA Asst Director of Leadership Development – excited to connect with
Annette Jones, NCEA Asst Director of Leadership Development – excited to connect with
A2: My awesome PLN shares so many ideas and opportunities I don't have to do much searching. https://t.co/dYlJl3VdIK
A2: Usually I don't search! I hear about PD on twitter! :)
If there's a MLB ballpark or a good 10k/ 1/2 Marathon nearby, it goes higher on my list- https://t.co/WOkuuGQ10V
A1: cost/location are always a factor but topic is far more important. I look locally, online, & near family I'll visit
Q3 If money was not a factor, what would be your dream summer PD?
I'm all over the website now thanks to your tweets
A lot of free webinars end up being fancy commercials which isn't very appealing to me
You need to come to one of the locations this week!
I think you would enjoy the program because you like responsive classroom
. I agree with you on Religious Studies PD. Maybe we should create the model here in ?!
A2:strong means you get to share great ideas including PD. Thanks for all the opportunities!
That is true ... have to look at source. classroom2.0 does some good ones for free
a3 are we talking about existing PD or what we wish did exist?
A3 I have always wanted to study abroad!
Looking forward to the one in Omaha a couple weeks from now-
A3 Going to a national conference! ISTE, NCEA,
A2 It usually comes through my twitter feed. is always a must. Have only missed once. is next.

A5 I will use Twitter to share my learning with a hashtag!
Q5 Twitter, of course! Also, post created hyperdocs on the hyperdoc padlet. Emails to my PLN. Gotta do a blog. Sigh.

A5 I love meeting new people during PD to collaborate with on projects throughout the year!
That would be great. I haven't used Hangouts so a good opportunity to learn.
A5: chats just like these I find are great platforms for sharing.
The lessons in the Google Education Center really will get you ready!
A5 I need to get blogging. And I will be Tweeting like crazy. Social media is the key.
you will get to met my partner teacher at the stream seminar! She's awesome!
A5 Twittr hashtag, new T workshop, LALearns website, PLC during academic year

Yes. I worked through many of them a few months ago. I'm a bit rusty.
Reminder: NCEA Call for Proposals is open through June 30th. Love to see you all at Convention 2017 in St. Louis!
Q6 coming up! This is a great chat! Thank you PLN!

A6 What professional book would you recommend for reading this summer?
Q6 What professional book would you recommend for reading this summer?
a6 as in a singular book? uuuumm...
I honestly thought the E-D referred to erectile dysfunction. Kinda mad me sad and happy at the same time. Now sad again.
Recommend Mindset by Carol Dweck
anything education oriented works great for me. etc.
A6 Improving schools from Within. Read years ago in Grad school, still try to read it every Summer! https://t.co/qgXJoCEccW

A6 While reading George's book, I keep hearing in my head!
Is that back up and running? Had it on my once but no one posted anything.
A lot of schools are going to standards-based grading, so I recommend Fair Isn't Always Equal by
Yes! I keep coming back to this one. Love
I have heard good things about that one!
Anything about leadership, teacher leadership in schools
Come join us anyway.... We're a fun group.
I keep writing things like YES by certain sections or things that cross my mind.
I have The Teenage Brain and need to read it. Another one, The Last One to Be Picked... or something like that.
A6 is collaborating on a new book. I can't wait. But summer I try to just read novels and articles
A6: ITI: The Model by Susan Kovalik - oldie but great. on brain-compatible classrooms. So important to know how brain works
my book is highlighted in yellow on so many pages! Yellow shock!
A6: Innovators Mindset and Hacking Leadership look great. I would also suggest Make it Stick, Creative Curiosity 1/2
A6: I'm reading a bunch of scripts...not exactly the same thing.
Another good one is Grading Smarter, Not Harder.
Great book for leaders at diocesan and school level and teachers! https://t.co/H1Ohye7eNl

I wish I could find educators here that would be willing to have a book study on ed books. MORE >> https://t.co/hqR70DyQik
A6: Also just heard about Watering the Bamboo in a and am really curious 2/2
I'm already going to be gone the previous week, so I may not get permission to be away. Next year for sure.
I've really enjoyed his short UTubes
A6 Not really a book, but Ted Talks are great!
I won't, maybe in the future. https://t.co/5b86jle0SB
Will you be at ISTE? I can introduce you to . He is a great contact for all things music and theater.
There's another much longer one of a presentation. It's well worth the time.
A6 Personalized PD, by Jason Bretzmann. Thanks to for the rec. which will lead to A7!
I'm enjoying it. Like so many, it leads me on a trail of inspiration for my new classes.
A6: A MUST READ each summer: What Great Principals do Differently by I give it to each new admin I mentor
A5 This is not a new book - important one though - Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology
Love it! Looks like my bookshelf at home!
We are popular now! Deleting the SPAM as fast as I can!
Thanks for the ability to delete SPAM on
Yes, great resource for new leaders.
Teenage Brain is great. Especially if you teach any grade above fourth.
Our 2nd Brain Break is coming up!
BB2 - What song instantly brings you back to summer? .
Have a great week everyone! Time to catch up with the family.
Just the title has me curious!
BB2 "More than A feeling!" by Boston
Lurking on the chat- seeing a lot of recommendations which is great. Now to pick a few I'll actually read
TED Talks R terrific. My social justice students loved them. Some even arranged interviews w/ the speakers.
hoping to get a few completed With a longer commute I can also now use audiobooks!
BB2: Summertime - Will Smith! :)
BB2 Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
Life is a Highway (don't tell me if it's naughty...)
BB2 Under the Boardwalk by the Coasters. (Showing my age!)
BB2: "Summertime" Fresh Prince and Dj Jazzy Jeff. Showing my age on this one.
BB2 anything from Jimmy Buffet :)
BB2 - Schools Out for Summer! Alice Cooper haha
BB2 Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet
BB2 bryan adams "summer of '69" and "gidget" themesong
Making a playlist for this! Songs of Summer : )
yes, we play that on our last day too at the Gilman household!
BB2: most anything on 80s Summer station ;-)
And our final question coming up!
Bb2 i remember as a kid hearing this on the car radio. heahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvUQcnfwUUM&sns=tw via
If you have prime, there are some great summer playlists on there!
Jimmy Buffet and Beach Boys
BB 2. Anything by Bruce. His music is a staple at baseball games I worked around NJ for the last couple years.
Bryan Adams was my fave in the 80's
BB2: Best sound of summer? Sound of Sunshine by
Nice, Sean! Share what u learn. Say hi to all of them for me, as a devoted follower!
Q7 Is there a significant difference between online and face to face PD? Is one better for the summer?
BB2: Anything that is upbeat, fun and great dance music!
I use the library mostly has had a great selection for fun reads
I am going to sign up for Prime. A few good shows I want to watch
A7: personally I get more out of F2F because of the human connection factor. Not as easy online.
A7 I like both. F2F to meet people and online to fit my schedule.
A7 Love the Face to Face during the summer and the time to process the new learning!
Duh! How could I forget the Beach Boys! I used to go to their concert every summer!
A7. I've always liked face-to-face- easier to do in the summer as well.
the hugs are great when our PLN meet!
A7: A good balance of both- online allows for flexibility, face-to-face creates strong bonds and more organic interactions
A7: Face to face is always better. Relationship/community so imp in all ed.
a7 I engage better with face to face, but like I can do other work more with online and at my own pace
Online, so I can wear shorts.
A7 F2F is always fun- especially if there is wine or even coffee involved
I think a lot of it will resonate with you, Christine - You get it!
A7 I don't know about significant difference, as I see as a perfect PD. But I do like my face-to-face.
and Twitter chats, PD in your PJs!
A6 I prefer F2F, but I have made so many great connections through PLN's remote PD is growing on me!
However tech makes PD so much more accessible. can still build relationship/comm in diff way
Q7: I always like face to face the best: building relationships, networking and idea sharing. Love .
A7: I think the difference is decreasing but facial expression & personal connection can spread enthusiasm more than online
A7 Face to Face I think is better for real life collaboration. Online helps with new ideas.
A6: Online really expands the number of voices you hear.
a7 my PLN provides a host of great ideas and resources at a rate f2f could never match, but it does lack that personal part
Q7 Prefer the collegiality of F2F But online is good. I'm doing a hyperdoc online PD w/ the Highfill, Landis, Hilton crew.
A7. When i want to focus on a skill like to be alone. When i need to learn about concept, practice, or idea need people.
I let my kids do the playlists now..lots of 21 pilots this week. I'm more of Bruce, "Summer Breeze"and "Wouldn't it be Nice"
Agree! Online is self directed, anytime anywhere learning. F2F essential for building relationships, relevancy
good point!~ Sometimes my timeline is an echo chamber, which isn't always bad, but good to hear other voices
A7 really like blended idea. We piloted last summer for US history. got rave reviews from T&S. Added another section now
Thanks! I love how technology forward my new school is. So many possibilities
Great point! Classics, Frank!
Wow, what a great chat! Now need to book mark all that is shared to my account
They are lucky to have you
I prefer F2F (meet people, build relationships) but take online classes (time efficient). Benefits to both!
It's hard to hear things that are completely opposite of what I think, but very important too.
Hey, any religion teachers out there creating hyperdocs? Please share.
Q7 Jumping in - I am doing both this summer and both have value. I prefer online, so I can work around life
Good point - I love for PD!
My entire department is for our data library. Looking for ideas or help or...
Thanks for the great ideas shared in this chat. Glad to be back.
Next week's chat topic is open! DM or me if you'd like to lead
