Hey #cuechat Cristina from San Jose! Favorite tool is hard- I like the iPads for the ease of movement and video/image creation but the chromebooks for the ease with which they connect with google.
A1 Hi Everyone, I’m Jen. I teach English in San Diego and I’ve had 1:1 laptops for my students since 2008! (Yeah, more than 10 years now.) I’ve forgotten how to teach without them. #cuechat

.@JenRoberts1 wow ten years means you have had a lot of learning opportunities and I agree...I don't want to be in a non- 1:1 environment #CUEchat#PowerUpPD#WeareCUE

Hi, Welcome!
Q1: Where are you, what is the status of 1:1 in your world, and what’s your role?
Thinking about it? Just got devices? Been there for years?
#CUEchat#WeAreCUE#PowerUpPD
A1. Hi! I'm Diana. I teach 10th grade English at an Independent school in the Bay Area. We have 1:1 iPads (though most of my students also have laptops). We are BYOD. #cuechat
Yes, agreed! I teach 5th grade (math/science) and we definitely needed to review expectations with the students in regards to chromebooks! #cuechat#proftabaldo

Nicole, I teach 4th grade, 1:1 chromebooks for about 5 years, before that a few years of 1:1 pc laptops. I don't know that they are my favorite but we have made them work for us. :)

I hear you on Drive organization. I think sometimes it's harder in middle and high school when they have multiple teachers with different expectations. I have this pipe dream that our school will create ONE organizational structure for students to use in every class... #cuechat

Yes, it is awesome to be able to use digital technology regularly in the classroom. The students love to collaborate on projects via G Suite. #cuechat#proftabaldo
It's true. The iPads can do some pretty incredible things with student content creation, but students were complaining about drafting on iPads (even with those teeny tiny detachable keyboards - go figure). So, We just have lots of screens... #cuechat
I like the gsuite collaboration, but one of my favorite tricks is to have two students fill out a form with both their names on it. They do so much more talking about their responses. #cuechat
Sup y'all! Just joining #cuechat. :)
A1: I'm in Covina-Valley at a 1:1 middle school. I teach STEM PBL and French. It's aaaaaaamazing having these devices. The Ss seem to enjoy it, too, for the most part.
#wearecue#PowerUpPD
I've started pulling my students aside and have them create a folder for each class...reminding them to continously add things to their drive and keep it there is another problem...the bones are there. #cuechat#proftabaldo
A1: Hi #cuechat♦️I’m Marcia from Atwater CA! #tosa New Teacher Induction Mentor❇️
🎯My district #muhsd has been 1:1 for 6 years—#chromebooks and before that we had computer carts!
I like the gsuite collaboration, but one of my favorite tricks is to have two students fill out a form with both their names on it. They do so much more talking about their responses. #cuechat
I work best 1:1. I love working with Ss who have learning differences. You can't run down the algorithm. You look at body language, facial expression. You interpret long pauses. You explain it differently till they get it.#cuechat
A2: The ease with which students are able to make choices about the way they learn and show their learning. When tech is always an option and seamlessly integrated it just becomes another optional tool. #cuechat
I have them in heterogeneous pairs and I tell them they are getting the same grade. "if your partner types it, you are also responsible for it. Including the proofreading." #cuechat
A2: It's obvious, but my Ss don't "lose" things as much anymore. Their handouts, info, notes, etc. are all on their device. They're super willing to help each other solve technical issues, too. #cuechat#wearecue#powerupPD
A2: The ease with which students are able to make choices about the way they learn and show their learning. When tech is always an option and seamlessly integrated it just becomes another optional tool. #cuechat
A2 I feel like my students have become more empowered, they have more access to not just consume content but to create. Students who would never speak up in class are given a voice, theres greater oppurtunity for choice. #cuechat
A2: not sure if this applies, but having make up lessons for absent Ss has become so much easier with 1:1, I can check in with them, but still move forward with the rest of class. #cuechat
Yes! I've also noticed that 1:1 has cut down on the "I forgot my assignment" excuse matrix. When students share the doc with me from the day I assign it, I can catch stragglers and strugglers long before it's too late. There's no forgetting when there's revision history #cuechat
A2 When my students got laptops (in 2008) I immediately saw them take more pride in their learning environment. At the time they were special, “the laptop class.” Today I see my students seamlessly collaborating and accessing the information they need quickly. #cuechat
A2 I am starting to see some changes as teachers embrace HyperDocs. I still see most use for AR, i-Ready, etc. Hoping to evolve into some deeper use and TPACK #CUEchat
Yes, I love how having so much of my curriculum in a digital format makes it easier for students to access in and out of class. Accessibility features are great too. #cuechat
A2: not sure if this applies, but having make up lessons for absent Ss has become so much easier with 1:1, I can check in with them, but still move forward with the rest of class. #cuechat
Hello everybody!
My name is Eric, and I am a future educator. I am studying right now to be an English teacher. I am very excited to be in conversation with you guys! #cuechat
#cuechat A1: @RomolandSD is a 1:1 district for grades 3-8... devices are also used frequently in the littles grades too. We have had a pretty nice established tech usage at the district to years now... have some pretty great tech-y educators too! #romogrows
A2: 👉🏼Tech has allowed Ts to have all Ss respond to questions or prompts, not just 3-4. 👍🏼❇️Easier & faster to give individual feedback.
♦️use “robots” to grade assessments so Ss can retake for mastery
🏴☠️extend the learning beyond the 4 walls

I don't know that I do a great job with the coaching. I try to curate resources and provide easy to integrate lessons. Really promoting #EduProtocols#CUEchat
My students love helping each other (and teaching me new shortcuts!). Also, they are able to do research for projects and it enables them to take learning into their own hands. #cuechat#proftabaldo
.@KVoge71 it's so hard to juggle, ride a bike, and run a marathon at the same time which is what I'm sure you are doing as a tech coach. I'm so glad that #CUEchat provides support and resources. Thanks for being part of our #PLN#WeAreCUE

.@choleric139 we are so glad that you stopped by #CUEchat tonight! It's great to have educators new and old as part of our #PLN I am also an English Teacher! It is the best as your reach both Ss hearts and minds #WeAreCUE#PowerUpPD
Hello everybody!
My name is Eric, and I am a future educator. I am studying right now to be an English teacher. I am very excited to be in conversation with you guys! #cuechat
A2.2: I've also been able to share annotated texts or audio versions of texts with my SWDs on #GoogleClassroom so they can access accommodations w/o it being obvious to their peers that they have a pre-annotated copy. #cuechat#rsp
#cuechat A3: Some of the lower grades can be a bit hesitant about getting little ones on the tech... some see it at simple substitution, not really ventured to the redefining level... and time... needing time to learn and explore can be a setback...
I have recently engaged in discussion about the transition to 1:1 learning in classrooms, but it has been mostly theoretical and abstract. It is so awesome to see how it is taking place in your guys' classrooms! #cuechat
I think of good mix of both is optimal. There is no better creation tool than the iPad. Chromebooks are coming along, but they still have a long way to go. #cuechat
A3: some Ts are resistant to tech because .....#cuechat🔥
✍🏼Ss cheat 😛-copy & paste & look 👀 up answers🤣
💡”I already have great lessons”
♦️Ss need to “write” more
👉🏼”I’m not comfortable with tech”
💥Direct Inst vs S-centered
❇️ college prof still lecture
A3: I think a lot of Ts at my site are still struggling to take the tech a step further and some still use chromebooks as "just a place to type their essays" #cuechat#poweruppd Also, T fear that Ss will be off-task is something I've seen in classrooms
I also hear from colleagues that there's concern from parents about screen time: chiefly, that parents spend all of their outside-of-school-time restricting screen time and struggle with both wanting their kids to do innovative things and not wanting too much tech. #cuechat

A2 One of the most awesome things 1:1 has done for me as a teacher is give me much more data about my student’s learning so much faster. The feedback loop is much shorter, and I have more info to use to make instructional decisions. #cuechat
A3: Friction points include time, feeling comfortable with the tech, using tech in meaningful ways. Control issues. I actually wrote a blogpost today about my own control issues. (and an analogy for the classroom) https://t.co/sBzvAeslir . #CUEchat
There are def kiddos who will be off task and that's the unfortunate truth. But, for the ones who aren't, the experience seems to be so much better and worth the investment. #cuechat
In reply to
@MrsCavalluzzi, @judyblakeney, @JenRoberts1, @dneebe
A3 I still have colleagues who are confused and overwhelmed by technology, especially when things happen automatically, like GC generating folders in their drives for each class. Unexpected things keep them off balance and unsure. #cuechat
A3: 1) trust that students will be doing the “right” thing. 2) staying in consuming mode and not reaching out to creating mode. 3)strategic use of tech outside of class to maximize the precious face time inside class. (I guess some are my friction points) #cuechat
Q4: What did you (or the teachers you support) have to learn, unlearn, or relearn to adapt your teaching to having devices for every student? #CUEchat#weAreCUE#PowerUpPD
A3 a lack of time is the biggest challenge but also a lack of coaching. We have some Ts who are apprehensive but so willing to try, they just need support and a chance to see how to make it work for them. But, yeah, time... #cuechat
A3. One of the biggest challenges to "full integration" that I see when I'm coaching still comes down to good ole classroom management. Teachers are concerned with digital distraction. More on this here (from the archives): https://t.co/cdKK4mBsqT#cuechat
A3: I think the biggest friction points have all been mentioned - screen time, Ss off task, passively using it, digital #workshits, tech fails - paper more reliable, Ss using it for other purposes ie hacking, etc. It's def a thing. Oops! More reason to teach #digcit. #cuechat
A4: I had to learn to let my students find answers for themselves. One of my first Ah-ha moments was seeing a student get very engaged with a site he found while ignoring the one I sent him to, even though they were similar. #cuechat
Q4: What did you (or the teachers you support) have to learn, unlearn, or relearn to adapt your teaching to having devices for every student? #CUEchat#weAreCUE#PowerUpPD
A4: If classroom management isn't there, adding tech will make it exponentially more difficult. (IMO) While tech is totally value-added, it cannot create classroom management. #cuechat
A3: I went 1:1 Android tablets when they first came out. Then Chromebooks. Ss had more initiative. We began to learn from each other. Creativity was a close 2nd. #CUEchat
#cuechat A4: I think we are always learning, unlearning, or relearning everyday when it comes to tech... like example - today doing a @RomoSteamTeam lesson & created an impromptu @GoogleForEdu slide deck for kids to research and share collectively their fave future space mission.
In reply to
@judyblakeney, @RomoSteamTeam, @GoogleForEdu
A4: Had to learn a diff style of pedagogy that is Ss centered, where the Ss are doing the work - albeit scaffolded. No longer sage on stage deal. Classroom management/discussion/noise level is also now a little different. #cuechat
Q4: What did you (or the teachers you support) have to learn, unlearn, or relearn to adapt your teaching to having devices for every student? #CUEchat#weAreCUE#PowerUpPD
A4: I also had to learn a lot about digital workflows. It was a lot of trial and error as I figured out the best ways to get information to my students and see their work. And those workflows keep changing so I keep adapting. #cuechat

A3 So many teachers have years worth of amazing resources that they don’t think can translate to the computer. But once I take their ideas and show them how to digitalize them it really opens the door. Change is uncomfortable! #CUEChat

A4: Ss might forget their charger or need to charge✅
👉🏼how do you know when Ss are on the task or website? ♦️
👉🏼some Ss can’t type YET😛very slow at doing things
✅Might be harder at 1st to tell if Ss are working or watching YouTube & playing games #cuechat
A4. Great Alvin Toffler quote. Learn-promote global awareness and cultural understanding. Unlearn-No! To student right to intervention. Relearn-advnce learning and teaching with technology. #cuechat

A4: There is a lot more about what I learned about teaching with 1:1, about students, data, workflows etc in our book. #PowerUpEd Did you sign up to win a copy? Here is the link again. https://t.co/WrejhCvkGL#cuechat
I can’t imagine my kids not having the access to #assistivetechnology in other classes without the 1:1. It allows really invites them into spaces they haven’t previously felt comfortable and levels the playing field! #CUEchat
YES. When students have incredible access to tools that allow them to create, question, connect, collaborate... the teacher can no longer rely on being the font of knowledge. We have to be willing to let them explore, and that requires some comfort with uncertainty. #cuechat

A5: Pedagogy/learning objectives always come first. Incorporate the 4 C's. Create > consume. Accept that some things are going to fail. Sometimes "old school" IS better. Removing barriers for learning is our job! #CUEchat
A5: 1)provide time and pd for new learning and revisiting 2)don’t throw everything you’ve been doing out 3) no tech tool can replace a great teacher don’t underestimate that humanness #cuechat
A4 Take it slow, plan it in phases and don’t be afraid to stay in Substitution from the SAMR model until everyone feels comfortable. Oh and Peer mentors are great especially those with rapport built! #CUEchat
A5: I would tell someone just getting started to learn one thing at a time, visit other classrooms where students are already using 1:1. Watch some tutorial videos about the learning management system your school is suggesting. #cuechat
This, to me, is the greatest untapped resources for administrators: barter with TIME. Want to encourage teachers to test out new tools, create meaningful learning experiences, explore, & God forbid, play? Relieve them of other duties (chaperone, parking lot, lunch duty) #cuechat
A5: Try with just one subject/activity at a time, so that the workflow with the Ss and yourself can be established. It's not going to be pretty the first time and that's OK! When the Ss and YOU are ready, add in something more. Then slowly switch over. #cuechat#wearecue
A5: Provide regular PD for ALL staff👏
♦️Have support personnel & coaching available for Ts
🎯Select some great books as resources
❇️Send Ts to #wearecue
♦️Focus on the change in pedagogy with tech not “no more paper”
💡visit other 1:1 schools
#cuechat
.@dneebe I always start with play...with low level cognitive content so Ss can learn the How before they have to learn the What #CUEchat#WeAreCUE#PowerUpPD

A5: If you can afford it get a good management tool. Start with free stuff. Exhaust 1 tool at a time but let Ss do the same. You'll have depth when the inevitable jigsaw of skills begins to share across the room. Learn Scratch. #CUEchat
A5. Use technology that allows:
-allow students to work at their own pace
-involve local experts, research outside the classroom fostering cross-subject connections
-stresses the role of unified communications. I chose Microsoft Teams @MicrosoftTeams#cuechat
I LOVE the comment about visiting other schools. I'm not sure about you all, but we have a difficult enough time getting out of our classrooms to visit other teachers at our own school. Seeing colleagues at other schools is so eye-opening and horizon-expanding. #cuechat
#cuechat A5: Try a new tech component each week! Incorporate and morph something you already do into maybe a Google Doc, Google Slide, or have students screencastify themselves reflecting on any subject! Get in touch with your techy teachers too!
