-
Hey Randal, first time in ?
-
-
We went through the same credential program, had the same mentor, and are now teaching together
-
we had ours in March - now only a distant memory 😊
-
-
Hey Rachelle, just emailed you back :)
-
We are going to be using a Q1, A1, Q2, A2.... format
-
It's completely cool to tweet multiple times per Q! Just put A (con) to show you are continuing your response!
-
Sorry I cannot join. Just walked in the door from a task force meeting & it is my kids time. Look forward to reading later.
-
no worries! hope you are well Peter!
-
We are going to go ahead and get started with Q1 for !
-
Q1: What is cooperative learning?
-
Sean from Raleigh, NC here. 5th grade math & science teacher. Formative Fan :-{)
-
Cooperative learning is about collaborating and communicating with peers in order to help each other learn and grow together
-
Instructional Technologist from Texas. First time in this chat but Tt I work with love Formative.
-
A1: Cooperative learning is positively interacting with one's peers while sharing and gaining knowledge from one another
-
-
Agree the world out there is competitive so nice to learn in a positive environment
-
A1: I think it's also about providing each other with positive and constructive feedback in order to improve our learning
-
A1 working w/others to learn, teach, share in the exper, collab, communicate, helpful for learning
-
A1: It is important to ensure that these small groups include students of all ability levels, making social learning easier!
-
-
A1 teams of students work together to help each others learning and understanding of a subject/activity/material
-
A1: Learning from others and sharing knowledge while working toward a common goal.
-
A1. Working together to collectively source solutions is cooperative learning.
-
A1: EVERY Ss in a group must think for themselves+share knowledge w/teammates that is critical to learning +the group success
-
A1b Building upon each other's strengths and helping each other strengthen any weaknesses
-
Agree! Ss must depend on each other for knowledge so everyone is accountable+no one get's left behind!
-
Have to run - surprise guest 😟
-
A1 & this learning is great if it involves volunteering with local groups or raising funds for charities
-
great idea! Giving students the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom walls!
-
agreed! by making Ss responsible for pieces of the puzzle, we discover+address strengths/weaknesses
-
Have been doing this more recently, new ways to work in class, Ss are Ts, diff HW, Ss like it
-
The rare moments when each makes a unique contribution resulting in a sum impossible without all of its parts
-
A1 The rare moments when each makes a unique contribution resulting in a sum impossible without all of its parts
-
Side question: how does cooperative learning differ from just group work? general Ss collaboration?
-
small group work first 2/3 Ss - then join them together with other groups 6/9
-
True positive interdependence! https://t.co/nEQj7M7Yoj
-
-
A1 The rare moments when each makes a unique contribution resulting in a sum impossible without all of its parts
-
group work is a means to end. Coop learning is a result of planning/relationships/systems
-
definitely! it puts grouping to work!
-
Cooperative learning goes beyond just completing a task. We are asking Ss to dig deeper and learn from one another
-
sometimes we learn through argument and debate as long as we have respect, thats good
-
I'm over in east Windsor, Hightstown High School
-
A1 (con): cooperative learning happens when Ss are accountable for own knowledge and group knowledge!
-
-
Q2: How can students benefit from positive interdependence (relying on each other for knowledge)?
-
It's a paradigm shift to look to your peers for insight instead of the teacher
-
Group work is when Ss work together to complete a task Cooperative learning= when they're sharing and learning from eachother
-
right! it empowers Ss because they become the working experts!
-
Good definition so looks at the individual’s soft skills development + relationships with others
-
agree and accountability here is key!
-
. aight, spring break is over. I am back. Alex in LA, tech teacher to k6, minecrafter, bus rider(forgive my typos
-
Hey . Thought I would be able to join, but need to get what I am working on checked off being done. Will read later.
-
A2 Each has a role, supp each othr, helps build relatshp, empowers them to take ownrshp in learning
-
It empowers teacher, too, cos we can stop faking like we know everything
-
A2: giving students the opportunity to be "experts" is more powerful than having the teacher talk at them all day
-
takes careful planning by Ts so Ss hold eachother accountable+follow through
-
it is definitely a shift! My Ss are finally seeing how much they enjoy learning from their peers!
-
A2: It can almost be less intimidating and, in some cases, provide a greater incentive to learn from a peer!
-
always riding the bus during ! Love it!
-
A2 A2 students recognize they have knowledge that others benefit from. Their life experiences become more valuable to share
-
2 partners tangling with a Makey Makey today, as I come over to help one says "Ive got it. Let me show you"
-
& this is where formative assessment comes in not just from Ts but from their peers
-
to me that is more important than circuits
-
I think ideally it's less intimidating but when Ss feel they don't have as much to share--intimidating to share
-
A2: Ss have the opportunity to build upon their understanding by sharing what they know instead of just asking the T
-
I do not use autocorrect either. Trying to spell as I bounce in my seat
-
A2: my Ss think-pair-share a lot and many times it builds confidence before sharing whole class
-
plus in a wider context Ss are learning from other stakeholders too e.g. employers
-
A2: Ss actively learn that what their peers have to say is vital to their own learning, no more "I'm better than you"
-
A2: Ss can also begin to build a strong learning community when they look beyond the teacher
-
-
Hi Chris from England teaching &
-
Q3: What are some great cooperative learning activities? What makes them great?
-
Q3 is now up in !! Feel free to jump in! Great ideas and perspectives being shared right now!
-
A3:2 things we did today. Build kn Minecraft, and set up MakeyMakeys super cooperative
-
A3 I had Ss each teach a lesson to a partner, come up w/activ, then reverse, Ss lead, have choices
-
A3: Oh hey we actually used today to write narrative responses to our building in
-
A3: Morning Meeting has helped my Ss learn how to better communicate, positively interact, and trust one another
-
A3 class generates research question, breaks into teams to find, compile and curate information
-
Q3: morning journals/mingles to share goals, apk, and build community
-
can you explain the minecraft activity?
-
A2 & this improves their overall communication skills without the fear of formal assessment
-
Q3: "silent ball" adapted from PE coach. Ss pass ball silently. catch the ball, participate in dicussion
-
-
Hey what are activities? Sounds like a class I need to take
-
-
Oh awesome! What roles/positions do they have?
-
right...coop learning/authentic tasks are inextricable IMO
-
Countryside walks, orienteering, camping etc...
-
Q3: working together to figure out a new computer app
-
a is a lil circuit board for peeps of all ages to make cool stuff
-
this seems like a great way to hold all Ss accountable and provide learning environment to listen
-
A3 (con) also used & and for Ss to work togthr went well!
-
it depends on the activity and the goal we want to accomplish. sometimes mixed is better. other times, not
-
Paired reading is very successful! For both new and familiar texts. Ss can write summaries together as well.
-
I def get an F in orienteering. Ive used google maps inside a building
-
wow your job looks really neat! can you explain how one of those is great for ind. and group accountability?
-
-
interesting! how does paired reading make each student responsible for own learning and helping others?
-
A3 can’t get better than for co-operative learning - but I would say this :))
-
In we built colonial settlements while discussing negative impacts of colonialism, rethinking via
-
what strategies can we use when we do pair Ss heterogeneously?
-
cool! How can you make sure Ss are doing their own thinking in an activity like this?
-
ind accountability - taking lead of a section of the walk - grp acc siting the tent
-
do they work together to build settlements?
-
when Ss are paired heterogeneously, they're able to challenge eachother more because their abilities r more alike
-
Hey whatever it takes to find the place you are looking for :))
-
I ask more questions. When conflicts happen I open to discussion, Idont solve it for them
-
I love the metaphor of as working together to setup a tent or building a mine craft settlement!
-
A3 (con): Ss can picture walk together, silent read, then share ideas. Ss can have same or different books.
-
More powerful if Ss call out other Ss for shortsighted thinking on environment or race
-
-
-
-
they joined up into groups. Some had conflicts. We try to unpack that decision making
-
-
when students teach others they're able to solidify learning while the other one understands content in kid talk
-
would you consider trying one?
-
I can see this working for high-low but how can we make sure low has something meaningful to share as well?
-
Q4 is now up in ! What would you do?
-
it is definitely something I plan on looking into!
-
A4 I reflect on: the authenticity of task, quality of materials, dynamics of group
-
A3 all sounds great - realistic tasks to aid amongst the group
-
A4 I have a tendency to step in too much when this happens; I'd love to hear others' strategies!
-
A4 TBH, I think this can rarely be fixed in the moment. Take it as a formative assessment of teaching. Adapt going forward
-
A4 Ask other Ss to explain to me, maybe have roles, randomly assign/have Ss pick, each responsble
-
A4: I have team numbers Each member of the team must take a turn when his or her number is called Slowly I remove the numbers
-
A4: Since obj. is for Ss to learn from each other, I would put each Ss in another group where they can learn from mix of Ss
-
A4: By starting with numbers it helps young Ss, then by slowly removing the numbers they begin to build accountability
-
I agree, sometimes higher level Ss can tune out when lower level Ss share. But I like the idea of opinion based Q
-
A:4 Ask the others to restate answer in different format ie image/vid/song/poem etc
