#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for a private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana University. One of the #sschat co-leaders. Excited for tonight's #worldgeochat!
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade world geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm so excited to have the #sschat crew moderating tonight! #worldgeochat
Kelly from Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, IL. 42.204171, -88.083401 AP Human Geo and US History teacher. Glad to see everyone at the #sschat#worldgeochat crossover extravaganza!
Hi. I’m Michael and I teach world and US history. Sometimes I feel like I need a change in latitude to adjust my attitude. (That could almost be a song) #worldgeochat
Hey M-O!
It's Chris from suburban Chicago. 7th grade Global Studies and most of the time #worldgeochat moderator. Today I'm happy to let the #sschat crew take the lead!
Hi. I’m Michael and I teach world and US history. Sometimes I feel like I need a change in latitude to adjust my attitude. (That could almost be a song) #worldgeochat
Can anyone point me to good sources for teaching college level non-Western urban planning? Trying to design a more inclusive course. #urbaned#sschat#worldgeochat
I’m Kendall and I teach 8th grade U.S. History in Texas. Excited to learn from people who do a better job of teaching geography than I do! #worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
Thanks, Ed & #worldgeochat-ters! Getting ready to livetweet the #NatGeoBee tomorrow morning, so Twitter and I will definitely have had some quality time this week.
A1 In my US History class, we specifically go out of our way to build geo context and spatial understanding. Heartland and Rimland Theory fit perfectly into the Cold War. Right @GeoPenny@jmgarner2003? #worldgeochat
A1
Teaching Global Studies, we basically are the geography class. That being said, I haven't done anywhere near enough mapping skills this year. Shh. Don't tell the people in #worldgeochat.
#sschat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
A1: I'll be adding on AP Human Geo next year, so I'm starting from scratch with this new topic ... looking forward to really studying geography on a college level! #worldgeochat
Little late to the party #worldgeochat Jessica from KC. Teach online world history for private school. Geography is VERY limited in the class I teach. It's there but not used effectively. I would love to revamp it to have a more geo focused foundation for the info
A1 Our course has undergone a bit of a shift this year. We are piloting an inquiry based curriculum that is a thematic approach focusing on global issues, #worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
A1. I do a fair amount of social construction of space stuff in all my classes. Sneak in as much DW Meinig as I can into my APUSH course. #worldgeochat
A1) I know it's the "cheesy" response but have been trying to incorporate more maps into my online world history courses. Sadly, many Ss say they don't learn much from maps. Also try to focus on importance of place/location and influence of environment on culture. #worldgeochat
A1 When I taught MS social studies, I always managed to spend time showing students how they connected to the rest of the world. I would have loved to have had @edwardhumes' tale of the iPhone's 160,000 mile journey to our pockets. https://t.co/vf8wmEuhdy#worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
I always want to bring in more geography but I’d like to do so in a way that goes beyond just the borders and rivers. Not that they aren’t important. #worldgeochat
A1 @CHitch94 Love the picture! I am never satisfied with the geo connections in my history class, but by using essential questions, I can get the focus I want, almost. :) #worldgeochat
A1: Being a geography teacher, we do geography everyday! I am pretty happy with it, because I blend geography and history all the time! "Without geography, you're no where" - Jimmy Buffet (someone quoted a song, so . . . ) #worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
Working on getting better at this, but currently mostly through spatial awareness and cultural diffusion. Would love to do more integration throughout the whole course. It's a little spotty right now. #worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
Q1) Geography is my main teachable! But in English, I like to map out the setting of the books we read by putting together everything we know. Helps create a deeper context!! #worldgeochat
A1. Map and discuss current events when possible discuss the what's where? why there? Why care? In language arts using the locations provided in @AlanGratz novel Refugee and linking to political climate in each narrative #sschat#worldgeochat
Jimmy Buffet is such a time and space relativist: " "Without geography, you're no where" "it's five o'clock somewhere"
He is probably late and lost a lot. #WorldGeoChat
Love this! I've heard of some English teachers using Google Sheets to keep track of characters as well as map locations in GMaps. #worldgeochat@rhsteach
Q1) Geography is my main teachable! But in English, I like to map out the setting of the books we read by putting together everything we know. Helps create a deeper context!! #worldgeochat
I think this is so true. Every map tells a story, just like every picture. Ss need to see maps for the story they tell, not just names to be memorized. #worldgeochat#sschat
A1: We discuss how geography influences economics and settlement patterns more than anything, but I would like to do much more with geography than I currently do (see last tweet) #worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
A1 In US History and in Government, I would explore the size and origins of the population groups in the US. Where they came from, how they got here, what they've contributed, etc. https://t.co/d9TmYsvv0X#worldgeochat
Q1: How do you incorporate geography into your content area? Would you like to do more or are you happy with the integration you currently have? #worldgeochat
I believe that geography should never be taught in isolation. I make attempts at the beginning of a lesson to boost #geographiccontext with a map or maps that correlate. #sschat#worldgeochat
A1 #worldgeochat
I would always make a point to reach out to other teachers of different subjects and ask how I could help them find connections to geography.
Hawaii to Kiribati. The date line actually runs east-west just north of Kiribati. I crossed it headed south, which is rare. Good guessing man! Thanks for playing! 😊 #geography#worldgeochat
A2: Allowing students an opportunity to explore historical sites with Google Earth or Expeditions allows students to investigate the ways they're preserved, who is honored, and what's changed. #WorldGeoChat
A2: my Ss actually have an essay question on their final regarding the impact geography plays on various disease outbreaks ... but also, political conflict, innovations & HEI, etc...
#worldgeochat
I’d like to do a better job with the maps created with the fall of the Ottoman Empire (and the ensuing divisions created). I would like to get the maps in the hands of the students and have them create questions. #worldgeochat
A2
Beowulf in English class is not only a hero’s journey. It can be covered by a deeper geography understanding of:
1. Migrations
2. Diffusion and evolution of language
3. Anthropology through text clues
#worldgeochat
A2: development of economies and industries, patterns in dialect religion, customs, migration, housing, creation of federal, state, and local policies #worldgeochat
also try some fun ones... Ken Jennings' Maphead is hysterical and I loved The Devil's Cup on the geography of coffee. Tom Standage also has several good ones out #worldgeochat#sschat
A2b: For example, I've pulled up Greenwood that was destroyed by the Tulsa Race Riot and then again by a federal highway project. We compare pictures with present, including the memorial. #WorldGeoChat
A2 my class is geography so they all can, but the old BRIC countries 🇧🇷🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳 have so many issues stemming from their physical geography that it helps to trace so many things back to. It’s like their geography is the origin of everything #worldgeochat
A2: the first topics that come to mind are westward expansion and the world wars; love including geography connections whenever possible no matter the topic #worldgeochat
A2 We looked at urbanization and what aspects of the physical geography drew people to that location. We also have examined human/environment interaction w/ deforestation of the Amazon & development of the Artic. #worldgeochat
A2: I would love to explore different cultures more. I’m currently reading American Nations by Colin Woodard to get a better understanding of regional identities #worldgeochat
Urbanization, obviously. But I'd really like to start working on the spatialization of race in the South 1877-1980 or so. CRM in America is primarily a contest over space and place. #worldgeochat
I really focus heavily on geography in ancient civilizations and try to make sure Ss know modern locations to relate better. I found Ss have a MUCH better understanding of wars, falling empires, and ruler choices #worldgeochat
A2 We need to spend more time on the physical geography of the Korean peninsula and its surroundings. Might provide context to a few things. #worldgeochat
I’d like to do a better job with the maps created with the fall of the Ottoman Empire (and the ensuing divisions created). I would like to get the maps in the hands of the students and have them create questions. #worldgeochat
A2 get the kids to see themselves as part of the world collective rather than (either) the center of the world or at the world's periphery. It's not just coloring maps or reading a textbook. They can make a difference! #worldgeochat#sschat
That is awesome Troy! Often one of the first things I do now that we are 1 to 1 when we are studying a new region is to have students explore Google Earth and Streetview for that location. #worldgeochat
Any historical story that has a foundation in the real world is a perfect candidate.... it’s more of personal preference and district/school standards #worldgeochat
I'm in the middle of Children of Blood and Bone by @tomi_adeyemi and it is fantastic so far! Would love to incorporate into our study of West African trading empires next year! #worldgeochat
In reply to

I've used 9th edition for 10 years. I am so ready to get updated :) DeBlij is a good one too and so is Fouberg, but I have to say I am used to Rubenstein #worldgeochat#sschat
I really liked Stormy Seas paired it with Refugee and just had Ghost Boys delivered today. Did you read it with your class? Any activities that worked really well? #worldgeochat#sschat
In reply to
@cheffernan75, @GeoSpiegs, @MsHolmesTeach, @AlanGratz, @jewell_p_rhodes, @mbleatherdale
I'm reading Ghost Boys now! Stormy Seas is fantastic! Definitely looking forward to using it again when we address the issue of refugees. #worldgeochat

A2: Allowing students an opportunity to explore historical sites with Google Earth or Expeditions allows students to investigate the ways they're preserved, who is honored, and what's changed. #WorldGeoChat
A2: In my standards, S's must learn when countries in each region of the world gain independence. First we explain how people were taken over and why? Looking at the geography: resources, location, neighbors makes imperialism make sense. Geography causes wars. #worldgeochat
Q3:
Let’s discuss this seriously:
What learning does this kind of assignment actually demonstrate? Is coloring / labeling a map more useful than someone might initially think?
#worldgeochat#Swantroversy
A3 Honestly, I have given this exact assignment. Over time, I saw how little it actually reflected learning. I started leaning towards map labs that focused on Geography My Maps assignments as a way to explore and learn instead of redrawing. #worldgeochat
I think you will find many entry points for world geo as each character is set in a different part of the world searching for refuge. #worldgeochat#sschat political and physical geo will be easy cone tims and discussions to have.

I know it’s not cool to say James Michener, and his plots are really problematic, but you can do a lot worse for describing physical processes and their impact on human settlement. #worldgeochat
Q3:

A3- The 'why' and 'how' are more important to me than the 'what'. So to validate the assessment I'd want to learn more about the process than the product. #sschat#worldgeochat
Q3:
Let’s discuss this seriously:
What learning does this kind of assignment actually demonstrate? Is coloring / labeling a map more useful than someone might initially think?
#worldgeochat#Swantroversy
Yesssss! I always played 1812 Overture in class when we were discussion the invasion of Russia. Also have a great political cartoon showing leaders who have bogged down in Russia (Napoleon, Hitler, and Gorbachev). #worldgeochat
I think exploring a region through map work is important to understand what physical features are present and what countries neighbor the country being studied. I just question memorization for the sake of memorization. Ss need to make connections to the place #worldgeochat
A3 get that busywork away from me! The only possible argument is it helps mental mapping but probably mostly for visual learners that are good mental mappers anyway. Side note: slightly worried this may be a big part of curriculum I am inheriting next year #worldgeochat
A3: many Ss have trouble differentiating between water and land quite often, so creating a legend of some sort does help; in my experience, if you use the map Ss make in your lessons and ask thoughtful questions about geography, they are quite affective #worldgeochat
A3
Andrew is testing me.
Labeling a map is awesome. But do more than just physical features & countries - let a map tell the story.
Coloring is the same. If you are coloring WITH A PURPOSE it is perfectly fine! But the busy work...
#worldgeochat#sschat
Q3:
Let’s discuss this seriously:
What learning does this kind of assignment actually demonstrate? Is coloring / labeling a map more useful than someone might initially think?
#worldgeochat#Swantroversy
A3: if your labeling a map as the sole purpose, you're not doing much ... personally, I like utilizing Google's MyMaps bc Ss are curating maps w/ specific data (& utilizing their time efficiently) #worldgeochat#techiestudents
A3) I remember doing a lot of maps in geography class back in the day in HS and, perhaps more surprisingly, in an undergraduate geography of Asia course and a West African history course. #worldgeochat
I think it's a great way to introduce landforms and resources visually but it can't be the only interaction Ss have with a creating a map #worldgeochat
Q3:
Let’s discuss this seriously:

#worldgeochat#Swantroversy
A3 -- depends on what comes next. It this just a color, label and forget about it? or it there an analysis of water sources and how they contributed to India's growth? Or a discussion of advantages and disadvantages of peninsulas or a discussion on colonization... #worldgeochat
A3 I personally think there needs to be more then colouring when creating a map. I always tell my students it's about the analysis what "story" is being told, why is this map imp. Looking more to the critical thinking especially by the intermediate grades. #worldgeochat#sschat
As a Western US Historian and Environmental Historian I am so down with this. I'm still teaching Stegner's Biography of John Wesley Powell and the 100th Meridian. That book changed me. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@MrMontalvoEDU, @MsHolmesTeach, @YPSSocStudies
Perhaps the title is deceptive. "Throughout history, maps have been fundamental in shaping our view of the world, and our place in it. But far from being purely scientific objects, maps of the world are unavoidably ideological and subjective,... #worldgeochat (1)

@DavidSalmanson, @CoachHenkel, @LFU_MissCox, @GeoPenny
A3.1: Thinking back on my experience with maps when I was a student coloring a map for the purpose of memorization didn't help me understand the why geography is important but helped me mentally place these places in my mind. #worldgeochat
A3 #worldgeochat
Spending “time” with a map, coloring it, doodling on it, imagining yourself in it, tracing it, looking at it... they all build comfort & confidence. At some later point CONTEXT becomes part of the conversation.
That foundation is laid by this ‘useless’ activity
A3 YES kinesthetic activity coupled with visual reinforcement and then DO something spatially with the map. I have my students use their maps to answer clues and questions rather than just memorize #worldgeochat#sschat
A3: Yes - S's practice reading a map, and labeling, but more importantly they are processing where these places are, what they look like. By mapping, they are making spatial connections, and their brain is learning more by writing it down, they see more patterns. #worldgeochat
Q3:
Let’s discuss this seriously:
What learning does this kind of assignment actually demonstrate? Is coloring / labeling a map more useful than someone might initially think?
#worldgeochat#Swantroversy
A3: I am 100% guilty of doing this at the beginning of the year for major landforms/bodies of water they need to know throughout the course. My students know what they need to after doing the activity, so I wouldn’t say it’s ineffective...but I’m not proud of it #worldgeochat
Q3:

... intimately bound up with the systems of power and authority of particular times and places. Mapmakers do not simply represent the world, they construct it out of the ideas of their age.... #worldgeochat (2)
In reply to
@DavidSalmanson, @CoachHenkel, @LFU_MissCox, @GeoPenny
Legitimate question and not at all bait for a fight: creating a "story" - such as resource distribution in relation to landforms and civilizations - different than coloring a map? #worldgeochat
.... In this scintillating book, Jerry Brotton examines the significance of 12 maps - from the almost mystical representations of ancient history to the satellite-derived imagery of today.... #worldgeochat
In reply to
@DavidSalmanson, @CoachHenkel, @LFU_MissCox, @GeoPenny
A5: I don't think so ... to truly understand the role that geography plays w/in the other fields is to appreciate the interconnectedness of our field! #worldgeochat
.... He vividly recreates the environments and circumstances in which each of the maps was made, showing how each conveys a highly individual view of the world. Brotton shows how each of his maps both influenced and reflected contemporary events #worldgeochat (4)
In reply to
@DavidSalmanson, @CoachHenkel, @LFU_MissCox, @GeoPenny
A.3 As I studied history more in depth in college knowing the surrounding countries helped me understand why current events had bigger impacts on different places. I think it's matters what the purpose of the maps are and to consider the learning style of students #worldgeochat
If my students came away from@my course by saying “geography.... it’s more complicated than you can possibly imagine”
then I’ve done my job #worldgeochat
Great point, Chris. A map is a medium, just like a video or an image or a text. Learning to read a map (and make maps) is a great study in media literacy. #worldgeochat
I use an @TheAtlantic article about those maps early in the year to give my students a look at the history of maps and the place those maps have in history. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/BekQEkHRBS

A4) I'm having a hard time thinking of anything. I teach world history and it seems that everything connects with the 5 themes of geography. What about in social studies courses like psychology? #worldgeochat
A4: Walkability is a critical geography concept that could fit in 5 themes, but I believe is fundamental to understanding how sprawl has hurt our health, wealth, & earth. Highly recommend @JeffSpeckAICP's books & TED Talks for geo teachers. #worldgeochat
At first I thought the same thing, but then I figured that the theme of human-environment interaction can fit in w/in the field of psychology. #worldgeochat
A4: You are hard pressed not to find one. Like we saw last night geography plays a role in the other social sciences as well as other curriculums too. That's what makes it so much fun to teach. It is so easy to connect it to our students lives. #worldgeochat
I think I sent all the docs to the whole zombie unit to some people in the past, including your Twitter twin @SamMandeville I can share any of it #WorldGeoChat
In reply to
@MsHolmesTeach, @cheffernan75, @SamMandeville
Q3) I feel as though this is one of those education trends that we just don't give up. We all coloured maps when we were in school and for some reason insist on continuing #worldgeochat
A4. Okay, I really want more work on spacialization of sexuality and gender. There's been very little done since Geography of Desire. There's gaps between what we could do and what's being done. That's the real issue. #worldgeochat
A4: Not if people take time to look: Every historical event has a location, in a unique place, with lots of human environment interaction and movement in a region where it takes place. All anyone really has to do is ask what Geo theme is this? It's there. #worldgeochat
A5
pre learning regions of the world. Have students find something interesting and share, research to learn more. We can have students walk the streets of the world in 2018. Petty cool.
#worldgeochat
A5) you can really play around with Google Earth and get a great view of the geography of anywhere. Telling Ss about the Nile River is a lot different than showing them. #worldgeochat
A5 every new unit now kids know we’ll be on google earth for 10-20 minutes as a group on day one making predictions about where people live, where the resources are, possible conflict, trade, etc #worldgeochat
A5: l love using the various features w/in Google Earth (it was awesome to go through a tour after the hurricanes bc we were in the middle of our natural disaster PBL) & MyMaps is awesome for creating personalized maps #worldgeochat
A5: I like to get to know students by co-creating a MyMaps (then layering in Google Earth) where students identify one place that is special to them. Students then introduce themselves, their place, and we all discuss what makes spaces and places significant. #worldgeochat
A5) I really need to do more with GMaps and GEarth. Something for me to work on integrating into my online world history courses in the near future. Can't wait to see some ideas! :) #worldgeochat
A5 The new @googleearth has great resources for exploring places all over earth. Google Maps and My Maps is really helpful for students to create their own maps and display learning. #worldgeochat
A5 We used My Maps and Tour Builder to map refugees journies as well as trace the journey of a t-shirt for globalization. We also used Google Forms + MyMaps to place pins for where products were made. #worldgeochat
A5 Google MyMaps as many have mentioned does a great job actually turning it into THEIR maps, like mapping where our clothes are produced for globalization/comparative advantage lesson #worldgeochat
A5: we use google maps to explore; Ss visited Alaska, Pearl Harbor, New York City, London, and Belgium this year! They love using google maps!#worldgeochat
A5) I used to have an assignment in my Environmental History course where students made google earth tours of where the water came from in US cities. #worldgeochat
A5: I always find value in seeing the places I am earning about. It makes it relevant to me and google earth or expeditions can allow students to explore areas/historical monuments, or track migration patterns in the comfort of the classroom #worldgeochat
A5 #worldgeochat
Map any currently event
Drainage basins
Population density
Elevation/math curriculum (where is the source of a river/mouth of a river)
Map any historical event (Anglo-Saxon migrations)
Create student tours
Create data sets that map out in GE
#googleDeathStar
A5 Google Earth and Streetview are great for see think wonders that get students generating their own questions to explore to launch inquiries #worldgeochat
A5: I use google maps to show my students the world, or let them explore it on their own. I took S's sight seeing to Easter Island by making a Google tour in street view. As a history teacher, I used the Historical layers of Google Earth to see how places changed. #worldgeochat
Are there still historical Google Earth tours? I remember there was a Louis and Clark one when I was student teaching...I haven't looked in a while, though. #worldgeochat
A5: I'm also big on discussing the blessings & burdens of any tech -- old and new. Important to discuss technoethics of Google Earth data collection & surveillance. Should anyone be able to see in your backyard? #worldgeochat
A5: I use google maps to show my students the world, or let them explore it on their own. I took S's sight seeing to Easter Island by making a Google tour in street view. As a history teacher, I used the Historical layers of Google Earth to see how places changed. #worldgeochat
A5. Google Earth is great for helping kids see where they are in relation to other places - every SS teacher knows that the first student search is always their home address! #worldgeochat
I would send kids home if the first day of school to interview their parents for a family tree. Each section would then map out how many different parts of the world they all, collectively, came from, #worldgeochat
A5|A6 Here is my workshop if you want to learn more about @googleearth along with other Google Geo goodies. Click the help buttons for a lot of quick videos https://t.co/jCsl9D23rg#worldgeochat
A6 @YouTube channel @GeographyNow has been working country by country in alphabetical order for a few years. I’m a proud #geograpeep and is a great extension for kids or refresher for me #worldgeochat
Coloring & labeling makes a big difference to learning.
Like the IndoPak map in this picture is colored incorrectly.
Therefore this one incorrect map can teach students abt past/current India Pakistan conflict. #worldgeochat#sschat
The novels cannot be overstated! It's the best way to get Ss to connect to a place! #worldgeochat
And here's some to start:
Refugee
Soldier Boy
Escape from Aleppo
Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein
Refugee
Bitter Side of Sweet
Land of Permanent Goodbyes
Just to name a few!
Geoguessr was one of my absolutely favorite in class gamification learning activities. Students really had to use geographic decoding to make their best guess! #worldgeochat
Newberry Library map collection. And every three years they have a stipended summer program for HS teachers! (I did the one for grad students twenty years ago. One of the best experiences I ever had). #geochat
A6: @NatGeoEducation has always been helpful, and @NatGeo videos are a great resource. I also love the power of place series: Geo for the 21st century. Nice short videos that can be used to teach about geopolitics of modern history. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/E88ksj1pRL
A6 everyone saying CIA world Factbook, I have lots of fun convincing them our tech guy legitimately hacked into gov servers to provide them with a secure connection to their secret data #worldgeochat
And there is a picture book version of the Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
That's a whole different category!
The Day Gogo Went to Vote
Butter Battle Book
One Plastic Bag
Stormy Seas (sort of a picture book)
#worldgeochat
Have a great night friends! Great to see everyone from #sschat! I very likely won't be able to chat next week. If I don't get the chance, have a wonderful, relaxing summer! If any of you IL people need anything, plz let me know! I'm down for coffee and geo anytime! #worldgeochat
One time I was on the hunt for the actual gerrymandering map of Massachusetts before and after (and after which is the same as before). I had multiple librarians at different museums and colleges helping me. It doesn’t exist. But my point is - librarians are great. #worldgeochat
