#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we are discussing what we plan on doing individually and collectively to develop and or deepen our connections and contributions to Hip-Hop in 2018
We intentionally wanted to focus on Hip-Hop because the majority of us are directly in various fields of education but as #hiphoped we believe that we should be considered contributors and stake holders to the culture as well as education
Happy New Year and we figured what better way to start the first chat of 2018 then to announce how you can contribute to our blog being launched in the first quarter of 2018 #HipHopEd
Peace & blessings #HipHopEd fam.. I’m interested and committed in exploring how Hip Hop is and can continue to be used as agency.. for educating our youth, for building resilient communities and people, equitable community & economic development, tech, wellness& activism...
I plan on listening to a different artist every month and share reflections on their work. I believe we should strive to expand our Hip-Hop knowledge through music as well as text #hiphoped
Part of getting past the “I’m not hip hop” anxiety I hear so often from teachers is creating actual hip hop artifacts. It reminds tchrs what it is 2 learn. I’m doing more of this in 2018 #hiphoped
This sounds like an awesome and inspiring undertaking and I am confident that there are individuals within #HipHopEd that would be willing to assist you on your quest

#HipHopEd we definitely need to take an #Analog/#Digital approach w/ our Ss..prep their hearts & heads 4 tech connectedness & comm. connected to our collect. history+culture #HipHopEd
The freestyle that @blackthought dropped reminds me how much I need to set time apart to read broadly and write consistently. Doing this in 2018. #hiphoped
Yes!!! I am also committed to connecting & building with folks already making things happen.. seeing where we can build on the assets available to us and innovate up for growth as appropriate #HipHopEd
“This ain’t no time where the usual is suitable.” -MosDef. Beyond artifacts, our practices, expectations & institutions are drenched in white supremacy & are failing our kids in urban education. We need to give them something to fight for. That’s innovation. @chrisedmin#HipHopEd
I plan on creating connections between Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the message content of popular Hip-Hop that young people listen to. See what messages are over and under represented #hiphoped
At present- I’m just open and curious to learning what’s already out there happening and if there’s opportunity to build further. Love to hear more about your program! #HipHopEd
#PGH is fertile ground for me, I visited 3x in 2017 and am definitely looking at deepening my connections to the people and the city. Count me in #HipHopEd for sure #RemakeLearning
It was major bars forsure...I'm like you but my bro Ali kept breaking down all the bars and I was like there are so many gems in there! Our Poetry Deep #HipHopEd

We believe we have MCs that are Educators so in 2018 we have to let the rest of Hip-Hop know that we have a crew that has passed the bar with bars #HipHopEd#ContentCreators
I will continue to bring hip-hop to educator prep, working with the local hip-hop community to help teachers see the benefit of integrating hip-hop in the classroom #HipHopEd
Writing more is something i want to do, too. As a "behind the scenes" person, its easy for me to get caught up on supporting other people's creativity and forgetting about my own. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/eYyiep6zWa
The freestyle that @blackthought dropped reminds me how much I need to set time apart to read broadly and write consistently. Doing this in 2018. #hiphoped
I think every time we draw on hip hop to educate others or improve ourselves, we need to focus on real things we can do to give something back to the movement. It’s too easy to say, as teachers, that the giving is already done. #hiphoped
My brother @whoisjr and I are working on a book and educational album which we hope will advance the #HipHopEd scope with educators around the country!

Yes. Hip hop requires generativity. Many just starting off with #hiphoped practices are scared to fail so rely on uncritical, canned curriculum that paints by numbers “as usual”. Becomes #raplessons
My brother @whoisjr and I are working on a book and educational album which we hope will advance the #HipHopEd scope with educators around the country!
I’m committed to learning about and understanding the intersectionality of the Hip Hop diaspora as a means of understanding, addressing and providing solutions to systemic inequity #Groundwater#HipHopEd
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd and I'm not sure as of yet. In the past I've done research using songs from a radio list or some other list that captures sales/downloads/streams etc. Let's connect Fam
2018 is about establishing the groundwork for a bonafide, credentialed school counseling program with a focus on urban school counseling issues and an emphasis in #CritHipHopSC interventions. Dream big or go home. #HipHopEd
Example: Nicki Minaj is right to note white male influence on the music. I think women in particular are left out of our hip hop narratives. Let’s bring them back. Let’s play their music. Let’s ask female artists to lecture. #hiphoped
A #counternarrative to deficit based models to be sure. Lit a fire for me to swing hard and be great. I plan to do that this year on a couple levels. #hiphoped

#HipHopEd fam, we are conducting a survey on attributes of the Hip-Hop Generation. If you like Hip-Hop please take 3 minutes to complete the survey.

I’m hoping to do the same as well... in addition to dusting of my sneakers and get in some cyphers with my son. #onceabgirlalwaysabgirl#HipHopEd I need to reconnect with my creativity!
For the #HipHopEd collective, @whoisjr and I are going to have a listening session during The AERA conference in NYC in April! If you’re in the area, please come out
Going to stay committed to re-working and writing my dissertation: Destroying and Rebuilding Pedagogy to Sustain a Generation of Hip-Hop Academics. #hiphoped

@tdj6899 my vision is to develop a high school course about the sociology of Hip Hop. Taking a deep dive into the cultural, racial, gender, socioeconomic intersections of this global, billion $$$ industry. Want students to think deeply about the impact of the culture #HipHop
We believe we have MCs that are Educators so in 2018 we have to let the rest of Hip-Hop know that we have a crew that has passed the bar with bars #HipHopEd#ContentCreators
Yes! Have fun with it! Speaking of canvas... I've been wanting to paint lately, which is something totally new to me. That might be the getting-out-of-my-comfort-zone creative move! #hiphoped
A simple but profound goal is to meet more of the people behind the twitter handles that I've blessed to develop relationships with through the #HipHopEd weekly chat
More reading. More listening to lectures of the scholars that will help me enter discourse about changing the game of education college students. #hiphoped
My biggest goal is to simply be present, in the flesh, in the community. From there we can build on the love of the craft and the beauty of the work that needs to be done #HipHopEd
Also want to use 2018 to consider how @MichaelJDumas' ideas on how the Black male crisis trope that impinges on Black boyhood get reproduced within hip hop studies and how creating agentic spaces through hip hop allows Black boys to live outside of the crisis framework #HipHopEd
I need to uncover/identify my "problem of practice" for my EdD program. Intersection and connections between my new passion (#HipHopEd, social justice in education) and my wheelhouse (learning & cognition; research). The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know!
Good evening, fam. A reminder that #HipHopEd is the best thing going on Twitter...every Tuesday night from 9 to 10 EST. #RESPECT
S/O to Timothy Jones @tdj6899

How ever we deepen our connection or contribute this year and beyond, we need to remember and teach others that hip hop is rooted in an era that silenced disenfranchised youth. Many still don't have a voice. Hip hop is still an instrument in the fight for justice. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd will be bolstering our collective consciousness by launching our website & blog to feature all of our community’s brilliant work! Submit blog entries to blog@hiphoped.com
Hi #hiphoped fam. First chat. Here in Medellín (Colombia) we have a great hi-hop culture, but reading you just realized that Reggaeton (R) could be another great way to engage (we are the world´s R capital). Also @ErikNielson not a lot female voices in R, could be emporwering 😀
I have a small team of people who help me when I testify on behalf of rappers whose lyrics are used against them in criminal cases. I plan to expand that team in 2018. It's a way to educate and give something vital back to the artists themselves. #hiphoped
I like this! One of my goals is to be more involved in my community & to work on building local programs that bring hip-hop & education together #HipHopEd
My biggest goal is to simply be present, in the flesh, in the community. From there we can build on the love of the craft and the beauty of the work that needs to be done #HipHopEd
The kind of teacher you will become is directly related to the kind of teachers you associate with. Avoid people who are unhappy and disgruntled about the possibilities for transforming education. They are the enemy of the spirit of the teacher #HipHopEd
My research was about relationships and care in a #HipHopEd classroom. I hope to explore that more in this book with @whoisjr — im so excited to share all of this with you guys!
@AnissiaWest all content areas. I created a practicle framework for #hiphoppedagogy in the science classroom. But all approaches are easily transferable across all content areas. #HipHoped

And in just a few weeks, I begin co-teaching a class on hip hop with Richmond based artist @SkillzVa. It's a way to engage the local community and draw on the expertise of an accomplished artist. Hit me up if you want to drop in! #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd will work to offer more targeted PD to schools and organizations to expand the implementation of Reality Pedagogy as a way of improving teacher, student, family and community relations
This year, I will fight harder to disrupt oppressive systems by encouraging my school and communities to constantly reflect & engage in critical discourse (what MCs do) to become more culturally responsive. #HipHopEd

THIS!! IDK about anyone else, but this is easily 1 of the most gratifying parts of the work. The community building; the private conversations to unpack theory; the practical suggestions on how to design partnerships...very fulfilling aspects of being n this community #HipHopEd
We hope that everyone will walk away from their keyboards or phones with someone from the chat who will hold you accountable to your goal and who you can be a support to #HipHopEd
In order for the system to maintain itself it is a political necessity for black people to be out of their minds by placing themselves in a sunken place seeing themselves as the N word a n**ga.
#African Americans #black community #BlackTwitter#hiphop#HipHopEd#BLM
I will be expanding "Lyrics & Scriptures" by presenting it to high schools that have theology classes as way to engage students in better understanding the bible and hip-hop lyrics at the same time @HFAPgh#HipHopEd
#hiphoped I am intentionally applying what I learn from Hip Hop in the Heartland Institute. This semester my s's are cultivating collective classroom knowledge about each other using Life as primary text.
We will continue to develop educational and engaging topics on a weekly basis to move us forward as a squad and a family. We can’t help others before we help ourselves #HipHopEd
#hiphoped All about moving beyond intention. Applying "co-teaching" and "co-creating" units of instruction w/my students. Together we built a dope unit about "Adventure" -- what is adventure? What are characteristics of adventurers?
Reviving a student lead campus breakdance group is where I want to get us at once again. I want to build closer connections with students and creating spaces for them to express themselves. #hiphoped#nvcbreakers
