Hi! Dawn from Gillette, business ed, jr. high
-
We love when young educators join the fun! Welcome!
-
-
-
-
Q1: Think back to something you wished was different when u were in school, what is it?
-
-
I'm Jamie Walker! A student at UW pursuing a degree in secondary math education.
-
-
A1 Ability to more easily connect with the world would've made a huge difference for me in 1990
-
Gonna gang as long as I can but the Twitter app is being difficult tonight..... Grrrrrrr!
-
Welcome...stil by the lake am i
-
A1: I know now the ELLs were shorted - so glad that's different today!
-
A1: Geez! Long time ago! :) Actually liked school.
-
Carole, Hay Springs, NE,k12 school librarian and k6 tech
-
a1) that was a different century, you expect me to remember. :) It was all one size fits all and sit and get.
-
A1. I wanted teachers to be able to answer...Why do I need to know this.
-
-
-
A1: I wish that we learned more about 'real world' things like how to pay taxes or how to invest money in high school.
-
A1.1 Graduated hs in 1981. Computer was the size of a closet and we dialed into it via rotary phone! Ha!
-
Welcome. Glad u r here Speak loudly
-
A1- when I was in school there was not much emphasis on character education, wish that had been different
-
A1 I always finished work easily & quickly then would just get more & more of the same vs differentiated/more challenging option
-
Can somebody please RT Q1?
-
A1: you either got it - or you didn't. Little effort, if any, to remediate.
-
A1) I wish I had more opportunities to pursue the courses I was interested in. More variety, flexibility.
-
A1 John, Principal, Riverton High. I wanted Ts to know that learning is more important than passing. Hope I live that now.
-
My son is there now and he agrees. But he love all the opps he has as a Trojan!
-
-
I also wish there had been more inclusion. I see how all kids benefit from it. Love that my kids have diverse exp.
-
Q1: Think back to something you wished was different when u were in school, what is it?
-
Easy to forget sometimes, but very true!
-
A2: Hopefully, we don't! Schools do get this I think. Elem teachers add SPARK breaks in class as well.
-
A1: I wanted my teachers to be able to put into perspective why we had to learn what we were learning.
-
A2: I never took recess away from Ss. Just makes the rest of the day harder. They need time to run and play.
-
a1 liked school, but got bored, way TOO much writing that was busy work, copy sent out of the text, etc no electronics,
-
Q3: Can teachers own some deisgned exercise time with students?
-
-
A1: Little to no engagement, can't remember hardly anything from JH years, teachers uninterested in engaging. HS a little better.
-
A2- from what I have been reading our schools with 3 recesses are doing pretty well. Lots of schools going to just one. 😓
-
A2) Not sure why recess gets cut. My son gets 1 recess in the afternoon and a few minutes at lunch. Needs more time IMO.
-
-
-
Tyler casper wy k-5 principal.
-
-
Ted from Cody - Elem. IF. Glad to be here.
-
-
I'm behind again, none of the Qs are showing in my feed. :( same as last week
-
Truly...At all levels its needed....SOunds like lead into a Q :)
-
-
A3 google app MOVE IT!! is so fun and easy reminder to get up move and have fun
-
A2) because sometimes we place too much emphasis on a number and forget we teach human beings. Sad!
-
A2: I'm not sure. I think it is important that kids get time to run around and exercise each day!
-
Same here... No questions
-
Chris Brown, Tech Dir from Fremont #1. Twitter client a little wonky.
-
-
Do you use Tweetdeck, my friend?
-
Q3 I have seen some brain break activities that have ben excellent in ele schools. Get up and move while learning something new
-
A3: Designed exercise time? Maybe not. Play breaks or movement/energy time? Yes.
-
-
Please RT Q so twitter wonkiness is alleviated I hope
-
A3: I think Ts can do brain breaks or do other things to get Ss up and moving.
-
A3) Yes...Dave Hardesty had a great program when he was in Gillette, So did
-
Hi I'm Greg. A sleepy parent in Buffalo, WY
-
Q3: Can teachers own some deisgned exercise time with students? https://t.co/Ss767XQ2Re
-
-
Q3: Can teachers own some deisgned exercise time with students?
-
a3) active movement put into a lesson. :) Brain breaks can be good too.
-
-
A3. Teachers need activity to....combine and be healthy together... Walking lesson... etc Dont let other dictate
-
Of course she did. She is a rock star! https://t.co/tWy3a58Pqg
-
-
A3) Yes...Dave Hardesty had a great program when he was in Gillette, So did
-
A3: If my 2-3 graders seem to be distracted, we take a few minutes to do yoga to regroup, and it seems to help.
-
Thanks to I got to see q3
-
A3 I have had kids crest exercises and we video tape to use later.
-
A3) I think it is possible to get exercise time, if the willpower is there. Often, curricular demands push that out of the way.
-
Yoga is so good for the brain. I used to practice need to again. https://t.co/4RWxRvGiwm
-
-
A3: If my 2-3 graders seem to be distracted, we take a few minutes to do yoga to regroup, and it seems to help.
-
Q4: Is homework valuable?
-
A3 - I've seen organized movement such as Go Noodle in classrooms to a brain break and snack to get everyone going again.
-
A3) ss rotated on exercise bikes and every 20 minutes had a movement break...movement all day
-
-
-
A4- not in my opinion, 10 years in as an educator and am still trying to figure out the relevance of homework.
-
a4) I know the research but I think a bit can have benefit. Kids live busy lives. TOO much is not good.
-
I have always been interested in the schools that incorporate yoga, meditation, etc. in the day. Would love to try.
-
A4: Choice Reading for 20-30 min. per day is good homework. I try to make assignments that can be completed during class.
-
A4... HOmework, the great un-equalizer for kids... NO
-
A4: low effect size - but depends on type, age, and purpose. W kids in poverty this is a tough struggle.
-
A4: Yes, but it should never be sent home for students to do on their own unless you feel that you've explained it well enough.
-
-
A4 The great debate! If Ss see value, they will do it & learn. Otherwise you're grading the Ps & their resources.
-
I feel like I am playing jeopardy.
-
That is a nice little bit. https://t.co/EWTmuccRL4
-
-
A4: Choice Reading for 20-30 min. per day is good homework. I try to make assignments that can be completed during class.
-
q4 depends, 6 career/tech sts have keyboarding homewk, occ homewk that needs parent input
-
Marcia Tate has great examps of how to incorporate physical activities into curriculum like physical movements for spelling etc.
-
A4) Not in the traditional sense. But with some creative work it can have its uses.
-
A4: I believe homework is very valuable, for me the more exposure to a subject the better I will understand it.
-
Might be is dangerous tonight
-
A4: so why do we still assign hw? Because we always have?
-
I see the struggle w/ kids in poverty every day. Many have the adult responsibilities at home, so no time for homework.
-
When it is something they want to do, it does not even seem like homework.
-
A4) At HS level, I see every teacher assigning HW to kids = overwhelming. Ts can often forget that Ss have many teachers, demands.
-
A4 Value should be placed on the structure of the . Is it rote busywork or is it applied and meaningful?
-
Q4 "is homework valuable" wanna answer that one
-
The truth has been spoken in my opinion
-
A4 Level the playing field - send books home as "homework." ,
-
-
Q5: Why does school have to start so early....we know its not whats best for students?
-
A4 Not playing fairly for those students who don't get the help they need when they go home to do their homework.
-
A5- because schools have always started early, as a parent of a current first grader I know how hard those early mornings are
-
True! If they are on block it can be even more! The sense to cover it all in a semester.
-
My guess - not enough time in class to make it through everything we're expected to, so work time gets turned to HW.
-
A4. Homework in lower grades should be short. I consider it communication to parents of what we are learning.
-
-
That's when you have to say, "Don't try this at home, kids!" heheh
-
Trying to sucker me in huh.
Family time is valuable
Play is shown by research to be valuable
(1/2)
https://t.co/LXzfP4K1WU
-
-
Q4 "is homework valuable" wanna answer that one
-
A5 Because thats the way it has always been....uggg.. lets talk change in the next Q
-
Sleep is shown to be valuable
Exercise is shown to be valuable
Being well balanced is valuable
-
-
Ug... block. 140 chars aren't enough for me to share my dislike of the block.
-
A5: As a morning person I like early, but know not everyone is morning person. Nice in college when you can pick best times 4 U.
-
A4: What percentage of work should a CHILD do compared to how much adults work?
-
q5 with afterschool act our hs sts are at school till 8:00 pm as it is -later start, later end
-
A5) speaking a parent,I would love to see HS later and EL earlier. My children were always up. Now my 9th grader can sleep long T
-
A5: Starting early is a problem. But parent schedules, activities, and family time make late starts tough.
-
A4: Homework is shown to cause severe stress and fighting in families. Is that worth it?
-
A4 - Gary Johnson talked to out staff & parents about parents reading with kids nightly to LOVE reading. We teach them how!
-
Q5: Why does school have to start so early....we know its not whats best for students? https://t.co/DN6jpikq9J
-
-
Q5: Why does school have to start so early....we know its not whats best for students?
-
-
A5 As long as we keep industrial revolution model & try [in vain] to align w/trad'l business scheds, we'll continue to ask this ?
-
A4: Homework discriminates against kids whose parents did not go to college. Should we design school that way?
-
A5 We are having that talk now. Will start at 8. Ss were on committee. Desire to do activities & get home...for homework
-
100% of the dishes! (j/k)
-
GREAT QUESTION! Can we start asking that question for MORE things. Shouldn't that be our focus?! THE KIDS THE KIDS
-
Q6: How can you change that? (Q 5 answer) Trick Q...answer carefully.
-
When you give choice they do love to read. Reading logs and AR squash that.
-
A5) one of those "It's what we've always done" things back to farming days. Belief that they early bird gets the worm. Not me :)
-
A5) For some, it works. Was it supposed to get kids ready for "real life"? Would love to see 9-5 or 10-6 school.
-
As a T the problem was mile wide, inch deep. Have to change that before we talk HW. Decide what's most important 1st
-
I LOVE LOVE LOVE block schedule. If you have actively involved kids it's great! Note taking and sitting.. not so much
-
Research says HW in lower grades doesn't help. So why even keep it short.
-
A5: I would love for school to start later, but unfortunately that leaves no time for other activities: only school all day.
-
-
-
My daughter just got a puppy. She's getting up early everyday! heheh
-
-
A6. Teachers could do activity based thing with student to start day. Be example...let them prepare forlearning
-
A6 Academies and blocks with staggered scheduling across districts is a start. Not an easy shift & requires risk taking.
-
q6) The ? has me perplexed. Am I supposed to answer how I can change Q5 answer? Sorry below basic on this one.
-
Does anyone think they are giving busywork? But LOTS of it goes home....
-
My HS TRIED to coordinate teachers for work. It's nearly impossible. Another good reason to give up HW. https://t.co/732it3knVf
-
-
A4) At HS level, I see every teacher assigning HW to kids = overwhelming. Ts can often forget that Ss have many teachers, demands.
-
Wanting to do something that is not assigned is the ultimate compliment for my lesson
-
I also LOVE block schedule. We are on it now, but moving away in 2017. :( https://t.co/pqXoADDk86
-
-
I LOVE LOVE LOVE block schedule. If you have actively involved kids it's great! Note taking and sitting.. not so much
-
I see it, my experience, band for 90 mins is too much-kids can't go as hard as I want for that long.
-
A6). We start at 8:50. Parents still bring them at 7:45. HAVE to adjust a cultural way of living. Siesta anyone?
-
PLUS we give kids work to do on WEEKENDS every weekend and BREAKS?! What the heck! https://t.co/pyIAF0wWNh
-
-
I see it, my experience, band for 90 mins is too much-kids can't go as hard as I want for that long.
-
A6 Individualize our school tied to college &/or career. We have frosh academy & talking senior academy. Make sch match future
-
Q6: How can you change that? (Q 5 answer) Trick Q...answer carefully. https://t.co/WaTAXu3i4i
-
-
Q6: How can you change that? (Q 5 answer) Trick Q...answer carefully.
-
They are penalized and that is not right. Equity is not negotiable. https://t.co/CcfGkxYcIl
-
-
we have too many SS who do not have the support @ home to help with homework. Too often they are penalized. Is this fair?
-
In a perfect world, no. But I've encountered a few who reluctantly admit to falling back on simple worksheets .
-
, Wish I had created more, but loved when there was no HW, kids came "want to know what I did last night?" https://t.co/uW2FVo5qXC
-
-
Wanting to do something that is not assigned is the ultimate compliment for my lesson
-
We should still play when we are 40
-
-
Q7: When is lecture best option?
-
-
Exactly. Let's realize it is a new age. What is a remnant of the industrial revolution, rethink! https://t.co/DGRftsF3Hr
-
-
industrial model of education. Reflects bygone era and a society that doesn't exist anymore
-
True - but I see a lot of hw completed(?) in hallways before class. There is a place for hw, if we are purposeful.
-
A6) I proposed a more flexible schedule last year -allowing students to develop more personalized schedule. Didn't happen yet. :)
-
. Yup! Agreed. I guarantee I made kids cry when they did math homework. I feel bad. Happy I ditched HW.
-
my 10th & 12th gr. are always overwhelmed with hw. Much not taught 1st either.
-
A7: With my young kids, lecture ONLY works as a very brief intro, then followed by activity.
-
Past 40 though? That's when it's time to get down to business!
-
because they have a job. I have flexibility, but hard to tell my T to be there by 8 & not model it. My kid-7:40 too
-
Actually I agree with that. Giving Ss responsibilities ACTUALLY teaches responsibility. HW does NOT. https://t.co/KnuVx7ZbkW
-
-
100% of the dishes! (j/k)
-
-
-
A7: I've also found that in high school literature classes, lecture doesn't work as well as discussion. Treat them like adults.
-
There are so many ways our S can cheat to get the grade & we need to focus on deepening learning = more time
-
This is true. Even if we must keep there should be free weekends & no breaks!
-
A6 sports practices getting pushed into the evening can be an issue. Football with no lights in October doesn't work well
-
A7- mini lessons (15-20min) followed by hands on practice and peer collaboration is the only way to go for little learners!
-
Agreed - in certain instances. Be purposeful, focusing on skill development, not busywork.
-
-
Right! It might be a place to start retaking the hill!
-
A7: SHORT lecture to demonstrate new material, then get out of the way and let Ss learn.
-
-
A7 Keynote address for an audience of 500+?
-
A7 when first introduced....(what are you talking about?)
-
Yes. (and I didn't want to come off as all whip-snappin' curmudgeon-y).
-
Say NO. You're the parent. It is your house. Do not sacrifice one minute of valuable family time. https://t.co/hW3dFJGNHf
-
-
my 10th & 12th gr. are always overwhelmed with hw. Much not taught 1st either.
-
Prioritize - tough job, essential, requires collaboration and commitment. Go deep - perfect.
-
A7) Lecture works for rapid presentation of information. Best if used sparingly in conjunction with hands-on application.
-
Look at the research, keep it to 5 minutes.
-
Agreed - focus on skill, creating assignments that cannot be copied.
-
A5: In my opinion, starting school early sets the framework for living in the "real world."
-
A7: If you're talking... you should be telling a STORY! Narrative is a powerful way to teach.
-
Q8: How much time do you lecture?
-
a7) for me LECTURE=Long. Does not work well. Direct instruction with interaction works in many ways.
-
A7 In short bursts & when every S doesn't know it. And with enthusiasm!
-
-
If they can read, why can't you post that. Use your time to interact with kids :)
-
We are in year 3 of doing just that & it has been great!
-
-
A7: Lecture brings back evil memories. I was guilty, too. Glad we're moving from "I taught" to "Did SS learn?"
-
What I dislike is when I ask my kid if the T explained how to do the exercises. & he answers, "uh, don't think so."
-
A8 I don't lecture at all
-
A8 asking tough questions.
-
A8 Less than 20%. 8AM doesn't want to be talkative, & I "lecture" less than 10 mins/week in online
-
It takes a lot more work & that's why standardized tests don't do it.
-
A8: I try to avoid lecturing with my younger Ss, as they can't focus for that long. If you must lecture, use pictures.
-
Sounds like an engaged classroom :/
-
-
MAKE IT A SONG! Research shows it is effective :)
-
A8- not big on lecturing. Not effective in my book
-
starting n15m If not now, When?
-
a8) Honestly, hardly ever did. Wanted them to talk about what we were learning. I would say max 3 minutes without some feedback
-
-
textbook. (unfortunately)
-
A8: Most is on blog & some video instructions, but I take 2-3 min. for demos too. https://t.co/l6uq2hP1U5
-
-
If they can read, why can't you post that. Use your time to interact with kids :)
-
A8) Can't remember last lecture to the bands. Stopped giving lectures to guitar kids this year as it wasn't even kinda effective.
-
Agree - family time is too short. For some Ss, though, FT isn't much of an option.
-
A8 More often & longer than I should have. Kagen strategies would have made me a better teacher.
-
Sometimes pulling everyone together builds community. I get silly :) 2-3 min sounds just about perfect.
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school?
-
great model for us all truly.
-
A9: Research shows that games are MORE effective in learning. Problem is we don't have many good games https://t.co/5aWZjdtUm3
-
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school?
-
I dunno. Sometimes I fall into a puddle, but not by design. Not sure how much design goes into decisions like that.
-
-
-
We should scream loudly that we need to value the family.
-
Love this! Assn that can't be copied - how do you do that?
-
A8) Interact or Lecture? Never lecture more than 5 or 10 min, but I will discuss the topic with them for 20 or 25
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school? https://t.co/4Xs1tf7Np0
-
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school?
-
A9 lotsa digital formative assessment can be in a gaming format as well as jeopardy 4 review kahoot quizlet minecraft oh so many
-
Moved to teaching one at a time with guitar kids - much more repetitive and slower, but better learning so far.
-
a9) Agree & there are many non-tech games too. Fun=ask kids to invent the game. Try it, revise it, use it again
-
A9: Please share if you know of GREAT games to use purposefully.
-
Demonstration assignments (play this chunk, scale, etc.). Hard to have someone else play for you.
-
A9: I've always found that Jeopardy worked best when learning factual information such as history, or even when learning Spanish.
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school? https://t.co/ESPNgTgDpF
-
-
Q9: Kids like games...how many games are used purposefully in school?
-
Q10: Who is going to WYTECC?
-
-
that would be an awesome solution if the community supported it. Ours hasn't gotten behind the idea YET
-
A9 I used a ton of games. Mostly as review but also as new material to see what you know.
-
I can see that in PE, music, art. What about math?
-
-
A9. Dice and card games are great for math learning.
-
A9) Have been dipping my toes in gamification. Nowhere near as good as , but it has made a difference.
-
My homework is to figure out what Qs 6 through 9 were. Then I'll sing a lecture about them for 2 minutes.
-
-
Q11: Who is going to Google Summit?
-
When and where is WYTECC??
-
Has to be writing or creation. Research RAFTS. Creates indi asgns & buy in because of choice.
-
Fun is always better. Ask a staff member about a staff meeting.
-
When and where is google summit??
-
-
-
Tough Q.My wife (math T at GRHS) does rollercoaster projects. I don't get the math, but each is unique.
-
Sending a dozen from Washakie 1 - we had trouble w the registration link - anyone else?
-
A9 Games and simulations fit very well in social studies. "DO IT instead of just learn about it" is my motto
-
-
I'm willing to bet that anytime a kid is having fun there *is* learning going on.
-
A10 & 11 Yes to both...as of now.
-
-
-
-
-
Be awesome and change the world gang! ers have a great week
U all ROCK
-
I am out a bit early tonight. Have a great week everyone. Fearlessly be yourself!
-
I gotta step out a bit early (i know, i know, I was late too).
-
A shoutout to for being named the new Principal of Riverton Middle School. Congrats my friend.
-
A10, 11) Yes to WYTECC, no to Google (I'll be on vacation with the fam!)
-
Thank you for joining , chat on If not now, when?
