Hello . I'm moderating tonight. We will follow a Q1: and A1: format.
We will start with Q1. Respond with your answer labeled A1: Remember to include somewhere in your response, usually at the end.
We will have to see if anyone is available with such an action packed night!
A1. I have an orientation for all grades 6, 7, 8. Students get the orientation in their ELA classes.
Great! Do you do it right at the beginning of the year?
A1. I feel it's important for all students new & returning to stay updated w/everything that's new in our space.
A1: This year, I did my first freshman orientation to the sch. library. Previously, integrated in fixed schedule classes at Elem.
A1 I try to get all 9th graders in for N orientation during first quarter through English classes. But it's not mandated
I like 9th graders to know it's "their" library, too plus how to use it ( sometimes upper class men don't like to share😊)
When do 9th graders use the actual library space on their own? Study halls? After school? Free periods?
Hi ! We would love to be able to contribute to the discussion! We are a tech startup in New Zealand with… https://t.co/gDmaEkYOTE
A1 my biggest issue is English teachers giving up time to come to library- we have tons of interruptions @ our school!
A1: Yes, helping the Ss realize the library is THEIR space is so important!
we are open 7AM-4:15PM- they can use before, after school, study hall or we have open use @ lunch times
Welcome! We are a small group tonight because our team is in the World Series, starting soon!
A2: I emailed colleagues, asked what they studying, and sent an overview of the lesson plan. Then I approached Ts in person.
A2 try to tie in w an early class project, i.e. Speed dating + orientation for first bk project; database scav hunt w/ research
A2 they see value afterward, but tough to front-load when time is scarce- we have tons of assemblies, Mass, fundraisers...
Over time, I have cut down on what I include in orientation; Ss taking in so much during 1st weeks; like to break up through yr
A2: Aligning with a current project, summer reading, etc is a great idea.
Keep it short and sweet for Ss and Ts to make connections for future more in-depth work https://t.co/iz0j38BqVp

Yes, information overload! What do you try to emphasize to new Ss the first quarter?
A2: Sounds like the beginning the year is hectic and Ss benefit from a short welcoming intro. More in-depth instr. later.
basically, "here's library, how to use, & few of fun/helpful tools we have" I find too much is forgotten quickly
yes, I think they retain best when learned in context of class assignments also
true- I spend more time with how to use databases etc when they are working directly with a research project
A1: We talked about a lot of this already. But I had luck with, short, fun games.
A3: Hands-on activities have Ss using library keep them engaged Team challenges work well w 9th Ss who often find comfort in grps
A1: How do you get student feedback? This year I used PearDeck and really liked the interactivity.
neat! I've never used that!
A3??? About feedback- I've used Google forms as a quick entry/ exit ticket... what do they know/ what did they learn
I also like old fashioned "first one finds x & brings 4 each team gets pt" that allow them to lrn physical library
Yes! I want to use for something similar.
Ss must walk away knowing they're welcome in library, I am a TEACHER & can help them succeed, & how to get in..All else will come
A4:I like LIVE game to learn library basics. Didn't need to explain to Ss. They find the answers as a team.
I need to read up on ; Still fuzzy on what they are and applications, but have heard good things
Yes, inspired me to try . Will keep you posted!
A4: The significance of building relationships w/ Ss, identifying ourselves as Ts first, most important orientation takeaways!
Thanks everyone for tonight's !
YES!! Many Ss don't think of us as Ts... so important!!
see everyone on Nov 15 to discuss special programming in your library!??!
CLE fans need to head off to for the World Series! See you soon for the next !
