Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A) Reflecting on what they stand for and who they want to be known as publicly. Thinking through what they post on their social media pages. Creating a public image. #LATICchat
Hi everyone! Tracey here reporting from the couch after packing up my third grade classroom today. Terribly sad to be losing this group of kids! #LATICchat
A1: Students @BPMSPatriots are creating Vision Boards and a mantra after reading about other teens who have taken bold actions. #LATICchat#ChangeTheWorld
A1: I love the idea of having the kids brand themselves! How about having them do it before and after our September growth mindset unit to see how their branding changes? #LATICchat
A1 Washingtonville 5th grades are starting their own hashtag against plastic straws. They are also calling local businesses to pledge and created a google form for teachers to share with students all over the world. #LATICchat
A1 as ss begin to build their ef skills and learn content they will begin to see their strengths and passions as ss. Part of the branding will be knowing themselves and what makes them tick #LATICchat
A2) Introduce them to systems theory and systems mapping. Let them map out cause and affect relationships. Let them try to make connections among seemingly disparate items or ideas. #LATICchat
A2 Part of this is that the problems we solve in our ALUs can’t be googled…They are complex by nature and require both convergent and divergent thinking with many possible solutions found using the #designprocess#LATICchat
A3by building ef skills we are helping build these key competencies in our ss. Every aspect of a lati classroom is preparing our ss for college and career readiness #LATICchat
A3: Reading down the list and I could see in my mind countless #LATIC T's who have created the conditions for students to acquire these skills... then I got to #CareerManagement. It's there, but are we deliberate and purposeful about it? #LATICchat
Q2: before making sense of complexity, teach your Ss what #grit is... let them know they can do hard things. With that in their pocket, they’ll work harder to make sense out of complex problems. #LATICchat
A3) LATIC addresses all of these:
Critical thinking/problem solving- the whole unit!
Work ethic-activity list
Teamwork- home group
Information technology- chrome books, etc...
#LATICchat
A4 I really enjoyed my work in technical schools. There is so much to learn about their profession, business emails, quotes, creating their online profile, sharing their message etc. It was exciting to help them start their careers #LATICchat
A1) Have Ss research careers of the future from a number of websites. Have them select 3 of interest, map out the pros and cons of each, and select 1. Then have them write their resume based on current interests and experiences as to why they would be good at this job #LATICchat
A4)When we talk about problems of the future such as climate change and pollution, we can talk about jobs of the future that will address those problems. #LATICchat
A5 the extinct animals one may be interesting. On 3rd we do a unit about adaptations, life cycle, and survival. It may be cool to take an extinct animal through the design process to problem solve a way for it to adapted to survive. #LATICchat
A5) In the not so distant future you may be able to travel to the moon, Mars, the international space station, and a space hotel. Create an online decision tree that potential travelers could use to determine which location would be best for them.#LATICchat
A6: Future water harvesters are going to have to be divergent thinkers! #LATICchat Those elementary-level water cycle units just took on a whole new level of significance!
A6 learning about ways to think critically and creatively solve a problem. Ss don’t need to remember content they need to learn to access it and then apply it to no situations #LATICchat
I saw biodegradable ones at the store this week. I actually bought a paper magazine this month. National Geographic was on Plastics in the Ocean and the photos were so compelling. I think it’s a great hook. Worth the purchase #LATICchat
A7 My favorite connection with experts is still @neprisapp@SeaWorld and @NASA also do a great job at connecting experts in the field with Ss and sharing their job, what they do, and what education they needed to get there #LATICchat
Fort Myers Beach, FL banned plastic straws months ago, now the city of Seattle and there's talk of the nation next... SO MANY problems that would build career skills here. #LATICchat

A7 I think bringing in experts is a great way to eat ss thinking about careers. Years ago we had a career fair and the ss loved it. I’d love to bring that back with an ALU twist. Maybe for our biography/nonfiction unit? #LATICchat

Q7 @Tanya_IDE I love this question! I think it would be so interesting to pose a problem and ask, “how would a scientist approach this?” “Why would a engineer be interested in this?” Etc. #LATICchat
Plus Nyack has so many parents that have interesting careers. Maybe create a survey when students come back on parents that are willing to be experts in classrooms about what they do #LATICchat
A8 Once Ss decide on their direction for the solution, they should connect directly with the expert that makes sense for them. We are way past just Skyping the whole class #LATICchat
How about "experts in a box" where students could sign up for a time to videoconference with an expert in the classroom, after sharing questions ahead of time they'd like to discuss with the expert? #LATICchat
A8 I’d love to see ss use email to communicate/collaborate with experts. Maybe even have an ask an expert padlet set up similar to a parking lot and the the expert had a moment they could answer or provide additional insight #LATICchat
We have one of the environmental chem teachers on a shared google doc with the 5th graders. They would post questions and she would answer them. She also had her students help too #LATICchat
CQ career readiness doesn’t start when schooling is finished. Ss build the skills and key competencies that they need to be successful everyday in everything that they do. #LATICchat
