A1: It can be. Depends on the focus and the type of support.

yay! Happy to have you joining the !! ❤
Come on in, find a beanbag, let your hair down and kick your shoes off ;)

Great to have you here - no matter how long you can stay.
Girl!!! You don't even KNOW what you're getting into :) LOL!!!
Hi Dorell. Great to have you join us on for your 1st time. Be sure to include the hashtag so others can s… https://t.co/cbB1Tkwcp1
Dorell Murray, Instructional Tech Coach, Holden, MO. 1st time. Excited!
A1: It drives reflection and refinement of teaching practices.
A1. Coaching is not about the score, its about the reflection and process. If higher scores come out of it, ok. It's a mindset
It's the 28th and 29th. Right before Halloween =)
How are you Kelly? Do you think their will actually be snow this year....It's over due
Excellent! So excited to have you!
A1: Coaching in of itself doesn't translate necessarily to higher scores, it depends on coaching strategies and rapport w/ Ts & Ss
omg i'm seriously so excited.
A1: Effective coaching builds teacher capacity & increases teacher efficacy. Higher test scores is a result.
snowed 3" over the passes last night my friend! we're hoping for an early and long winter is sick skiing!
I told someone that story the other day! I was like, business credit card?
A1: Purposeful coaching impacts instructional practices. Definitely impacts S learning & S output. https://t.co/lXDg4gI0le
rapport is key, laying the foundations of trust for some good and honest reflection.
continued, ongoing support in student engagement cannot be a bad thing.
Hi Aprill! Great to see you again. Hopefully one day we can meet f2f. Heading to Sac this wkend for 2 races
A1. I found that when I asked higher-scoring teachers how they taught topics their kidlets scored highest on so I could grow
A1: Depends on strategies used and if there's purpose and students buy in.
Hi Heather. Great to have you with us. We’re talking Cognitive Coaching tonight. Probably another week on topic too
A1: Collaboration is a ... Modeling FTW
Nope, just my "other" name LOL!!
Hi Nick! Great to see you earlier today and now on
whether the coaching is one thing to help or one more thing to do.
A1: Teachers who feel inspired & supported lead better lessons & create more engaging learning environments. Coaching = supporting
A1 I think it depends on a lot of factors including administration, professional development along with coaching support.
Awwww, two of my favs!!!!
There’s a 5K that I can’t remember and then a 10K on Sunday - the Golden Arches run
it's her alias...we all know she's in witness protection.
YES! That was super fun =) Love chatting with you two.
Great to have you with us John! We all definitely get inspired by each other
Coaching provides space for discussion/reflection to 1) identify strengths and 2) get resources to improve on areas for growth
Me too! Gonna be a blast! I heart my friends so much, don't even care that girlchild makes fun!
A1: I find it's all about purposeful and personal coaching. Helping growth at all points and continuing to support growth forward
girl child saw how awesome we are irl. she's jelly.
Definitely an important to have that safe place to share thoughts with no judgements
My coaches have managed to get the best out of me. Not so much about knowledge but about effort attitude process
Pft. Push her down and then run away giggling evily!
It's right up there with "peerless green"... It's a biiiig secret
Well said. Answers always point back to Relationships. https://t.co/iXqlZj6Jrt
A1: Coaching in of itself doesn't translate necessarily to higher scores, it depends on coaching strategies and rapport w/ Ts & Ss
A1: I believe collaboration coaching that is rooted in a common goal, student focused, with a short feedback cycle is powerful
She is! She loved you guys. For reals. Boychild did too.
A1: Also important to make sure that coaching supports risk taking and a safe environment to make mistakes.
i'd totes be butterymartin if it weren't kinda dirty.
We’ll talk more about those effective coaching moves as the chat goes on. Probably a part 2 of this topic too
what a hilarious duo!! We had fun eating frozen rice puffs!!
A1: Theoretically yes.Correlation is not causation but 21C Pedagogy mindshift requires some heavy and consistent reflection
LOL!! So glad you laughed about it!! You = Amaze!! <3
A1) When teachers stretch and grow in targeted areas aligned to content and best practices, students can grow exponentially
A1: be willing to collaborate and learn as the coach.
Great practice of going to those who have been successful for us to grow AND then share with others in return
Agree..gotta love a coach like a great collaborative team - variables are department, site, & district determined
A1: Yes good coaching is effective. Teaching is so difficult and complex, no one should have to do it alone.
That's very powerful feedback for them! They must love working with you =)
No, YOU = Amaze!!! <3 you and all the laughing we all get to do together!
Well said. It’s about our own coaching moves - purposeful, objective, & aligned to vision and goals.
Coaching is always helped me focus on the goals
Michelle Ciecek, Dig Learning Coach, Tustin,CA-Popping in/out with kids bedtime routine. Mentor was my father, best coach I know
You're just selling me on that other name!! Sounds delicious!
Exactly all of those things have to work together.
I'm late due to a dance break with my daughter. Likely reading more than posting tonight. "Can't stop the… https://t.co/W44PvpH7lz
Collaboration is always important in the coach and T relationship
A2. Clear boundaries are helping. I'm also learning how to say "no" which is a stretching my potential ;)
Those are two super important elements to coaching-- purposeful and personal. Love it.
A2 Chocolate and starting small.
A2: Listen and work on a relationship. Collaborate and value the Ts strengths. Build off and influence a single step forward.
I told David about the song substitution your family does for "you", like we do for Ione with "food" ...he laughed!
A2:I try to find what it is that inspires them to teach or what they are passionate about and build a connection starting there
A2-paraphrase, acknowledge and move on. "You are feeling . . . And you want . . ." Coaching Gold.
A2: Celebrate small successes to build momentum. Build relationships, review shared norms.
A2: Sometimes, stepping aside is a strategy...with a smile of course ;)
Without the relationships and trust, the coaching doesn't work.
Ah, super jealous. Have a wonderful time
A2: Remembering to go slow & build relationships. It is not about your agenda as the coach- it is about their growth as a T.
Or is that what you want...haha
relationships help everything.
A2: Just like Ss. Listen to interests, find a hook.
How could he not laugh!? It's awesome :)
Respectful persistence and modelling with rest of staff showing them what they're are missing out on then welcoming w/open arms
Well said. I’m 6 mins behind but def want to say I love your words - elevate practice
A2: Try not to overwhelm. Introduce one strategy/tool at a time. Look for answers together.
Christine Frantzen, Future Ready Learning Coach, Central Kitsap, WA, Jumping in/out, my mom is still my mentor
Hilarity and stumbling with ensue!!!
Oh I always love chocolate!
A1: Having a thought partner and someone to be reflective with=awesome. Better together!
A2: Always focus on what is best for students. Redirect toward common vision.
Yes! It’s like a dance. Trust in each other and each other’s moves
sometimes hard. Ts may be doing to wrong things with the right goals.
that's always my first approach too! Sometimes just listening can be the best way to open that door
Hi Christine! So excited to have you back in =)
That's the whole point behind my "roadie to producer" analogy. Producers (coaches) help elevate. Roadies just help.
Well said! As coaches, we are certainly in the role of supporting and elevating Ts.
The best in everything always have great coaches even when there at the top of their game look at musicians and athletes same 4 Ts
A2 - promote inclusion, talk about common interest, include all in jokes, make a warm environment, & Chocolate for
A2: "Use the group to move the group" Michael Fullan
A2: Try to figure out what is leading to the difficult approach. Then work w/them from where they are
THIS!
Great analogy.
https://t.co/Hh72EXfyAT
That's the whole point behind my "roadie to producer" analogy. Producers (coaches) help elevate. Roadies just help.
I knew I liked you for a reason Sky! ;) https://t.co/bRV96YqWRC
A2 - promote inclusion, talk about common interest, include all in jokes, make a warm environment, & Chocolate for
A2:Focusing on their passions 1st & setting goals around those passions opens the doors to coaching https://t.co/oBEJP2PIOF
Yes! Let’s never forget part 3 of any coaching session - debrief and follow up. https://t.co/ISN1ibRpFo
A1 I think it depends on a lot of factors including administration, professional development along with coaching support.
Hey to such a great question. It's all about the ground standing yours but also finding common
A2: Sometimes Ts are reluctant because they've been burned before. Don't immediately take their skepticism personally.
It’s definitely about the relationship. Trusting relationship starts everything
Well said. Just like a T w Ss - meet them where they are.
Amanda Taylor EdTech tosa in Saddleback Valley. I have several amazing educators I consider mentors.
A2: Sometimes you have to move at their pace. Find where they're comfortable, start there. Have them observe.
Hey Amanda. I’m 4 mins behind but want to say hi to one of my EDUHeroes & teammates
In general, small effective wins to start-if Ts see & feel a difference through little changes --> motivation, confidence, efficacy
Acknowledgment and listening are key. And apply what you've learned from good coaches you've had.
Yes! Definitely important to take time to celebrate every success - no matter how small.
We were just talking about how amazing was today! =)
right? Can't force them. They have to see for themselves with their own pathway.
A2: Be vulnerable and make mistakes; don't take self too seriously
1 small win, just get them to ask you to come back. A foot in the door. Thats all we need.
A2: avoid an emotional response, recognize their needs, reframe in a positive way, stay goal focused, push back
A2 Find common ground-doesn't have to be work related. Build trust and make connections on a personal level.
A2: Listen, get to know their strengths, build on what they are doing well, support, go slow, focus on point-the students
That’s it. The goals are not yours but the teacher’s. https://t.co/k3z5EBkfgV
A2: Remembering to go slow & build relationships. It is not about your agenda as the coach- it is about their growth as a T.
Totes looking forward to getting started on this year's event!
A2 Taking baby steps w/ coaching difficult team members to build trust.
Yes. Always important to meet everyone where they are.
Thank you. I always love all of your words.
Like a full body dry heave set to music.
Not to distract from the chat, but does anyone have a coaching conference that they have attended and loved?
A3 W/empathy. I try to see things from their point of view I examine my beliefs & why I believe them & figure out a middle ground
A3 Reflect, reflect, reflect. Try to see if from their side and come to a middle ground. And always be kind.
OMG I'm laughing so hard. Dry Heaves sent to music.
A3: Choose words carefully. Discuss openly. Listen. Be prepared to respond with what's best for Ss.
A3. Coaching isn't about me, it is about the coachee. Job is 2 help reflect, not see things my way. Best way to lose a coachee
Recently had a quote of mine created by that truly captures how I feel about my calling
A3: Articulate, nod, and smile that you hear their view. It's okay not to agree. Make time to hear Ts view...Make it a convo.
A3 Part 1: If a T disagrees with *my* viewpoint, I need to listen because it's possible I need to learn something. However...
A2 Approach with positive presuppositions. Trust that all parties have the intent of putting students' needs first.
A3:listen can reflect. The best growth comes from understanding through different perspectives.
A3: Don't take it personal. See things from their point of view and ask for an explanation if I don't completely understand.
I saw it. You are awesome and inspiring.
I'm a Ts amongst a grp of Ts all coached....so we are always stepping aside to hear one another..I consciously do so
A3 Try to understand their view and meet them where they are. Provide support in areas that you DO agree on.
A3: I acknowledge their pov, but respectfully disagree and respond
A3 cont. also not my job to be thought police or correct teachers. Let Admin take care of bad apples, I'm just here to help .
A3:listen and reflect. The best growth comes from understanding through different perspectives.
A3: DOK level 1 = that is wrong. DOK level 3 = why wrong and propose a solution. model higher DOK levels.
A3: Listen w/ respect, honor their view, then explain the WHY behind your view, if no common ground, give time for all to reflect
A3: It's ok to disagree. Coaching = open dialogue. It's important to be respectful & keep an open mind. Growth mindset for all.
Hey...you took my quote Joe...lol
A3. Hopefully the disagreement isn't the end of the conversation. Look at the issue from another angle.
omg i love that you said coaches don't judge! dying!
A3 Part 1: ...If a T disagrees with the vision of the school or District, then that gets addressed, because we're all on a team.
What a great practice to be in https://t.co/W1kkhtV3RC
I'm a Ts amongst a grp of Ts all coached....so we are always stepping aside to hear one another..I consciously do so
So important to remember that open/growth mindset is required on both sides.
TOSA coming up... fantastic line up!
Not the first time I've heard that! I love & Elaine so I'm good with the comparison!! :)
Hi Christine. Great to have you with us. I’m 11 mins behind but didn’t want to miss saying hi.
My district also hired staff to do training over summer--our coaches loved it!
A3: More learning happens from disagreement, if both sides are open to listening to each other.
A3 See it as an opportunity to learn. Keep an open dialogue and explore together.
YES. That is awesome. I use "Tell me more about that" all the time!
I love learning from argument. Either come out with a new viewpoint, or more conviction in current one.
It’s always about what’s best for Ss! https://t.co/xyJEa1JyLn
A2: Always focus on what is best for students. Redirect toward common vision.
True of all parts of life. We are definitely
Yes....see what their needs are and meet in the middle ... But I also like to be pushed and shown new - expand my mind
We’ll probably have a part 2 for this topic. I brainstormed about 15 Qs. :)
A3: lean in, ask questions and the why behind it, keep dialog open and positive
Well said! https://t.co/3MxzyBuPh5
The best in everything always have great coaches even when there at the top of their game look at musicians and athletes same 4 Ts
True but if they are resistant it's a bit harder than with someone who is willing.
Maintain a growth mindset. Yes, and... https://t.co/CPsa8iVSer
YES. That is awesome. I use "Tell me more about that" all the time!
totally agree. We all need to be open to change, even if we think we are right. I learn something new every day.
That's one of those prompts I need to memorize!
And sometimes there's a misunderstanding and that Q clarifies-- we might be saying the same thing.
I try to learn 2 things. Just in case I forget one of them... Learned that from my grandpa.
yes...but my problem is the opposite:) Its like teaching someone that doesn't want to learn - you cant make them
A3: Well said. Listen to understand rather than to form a response
HA! Love it! Your grandpa was a smart guy! I'm using that.
I especially appreciate your mention of time. Time apart of situation helps clear minds & regain perspective
And it’s our job to revisit those goals bc sometimes we all lose sight of them https://t.co/SGM0QwIqXR
I couldn't agree more. I remind them often that they set the agenda...their needs and wants
A4: Zone on a S that is struggling. Make it about the S...
A4: Start with Qs, why did T do it this way, what were the goals, did it meet the goals, what would T change next time, lead w/Qs
A4: Trouble wrapping my head around this one. But would see how it connects and guide beyond lecture.
Yes, indeed! https://t.co/IFkCVX2wzo
such an important element for team collaboration. Listen, step aside, respect everyone's strengths
A4 lesson study & focus on S engagement. go over stragt. tht fit w/ PG or SM. Go back to S, focus on stratg. Get help if no change
sometimes I call out the older teachers and tell them to learn 3. Mostly because I am a jerk. but they love it.
We gotta learn from those elders! Sure wish I would have paid more attention...Story of my life
Lesson study is so powerful! https://t.co/7aHyPXO9pq
A4 lesson study & focus on S engagement. go over stragt. tht fit w/ PG or SM. Go back to S, focus on stratg. Get help if no change
Yes! The shared vision comes before the coaching. Otherwise you're maybe planting seeds in the wrong kind of soil.
This idea needs to be seen by all so I’m adding the hashtag https://t.co/WYrxjzE0fD
So true! I keep them on our shared notes doc and pull them up at least once a month to reference in our work together
I'm sure you are not a jerk... as long as you don't call them old to their faces!
Always love the phrase - lean in https://t.co/DwzzXawd6L
A3: lean in, ask questions and the why behind it, keep dialog open and positive
A4.cont. I like the reflect into planning conv. 4 this. Such a great tool.
aaaaand now I'm singing "Story of my life..."
Maintain, model, and foster growth mindset for all!
Thanks for adding I'm a bit distracted with kid's bed time routine
Never. I imply it. I also get on the younger teachers if they ever disregard a thing they say. I value their exp.
That definitely works each & every time I use it. Helps keep convo & thinking in T
Side note: Whip Nae Nae in full effect now. My kids can seriously out dance me.
Yes, of course. It’s great to have you with us. I’ll always RT w for you :)
HA HA HA must be VERY entertaining!
A4: Reflective Qs: Is this 5-day unit at grade level? If so, can the map be revised? If not, is this equitable treatment of Ss?
A4: YES! Focus on the students. Get data. Video tape lesson if possible for the playback https://t.co/KFARRXc4cd
A4: Zone on a S that is struggling. Make it about the S...
Well said. Build your user base.
Don’t forget the hashtag. Others definitely need to see your tweets https://t.co/0UX3VSKFhP
A2: start with the willing and the positive. Viral growth!
A4 Encourage the new teacher to observe an experienced teacher. Let him/her make discoveries about different teaching methods.
A4 New T probably doesn't realize: use reflective conversations. Ask them what they like/dislike about the process they are using.
We just did "rockstar dancing" (kids' words) and "floor dancing" (like breakdancing, but with jumping off furniture)
I cannot say enough about the Lesson Study format! Amazing structure for PD https://t.co/mEgFa5HvHi
A4 lesson study & focus on S engagement. go over stragt. tht fit w/ PG or SM. Go back to S, focus on stratg. Get help if no change
A5 Oiy another tough one! I would say lesson study applies here too. You can learn SO much from watching colleagues.
A4: Ask questions. Help new teacher to reflect on lesson (what went well, etc) and suggest strategies.
totally worth it. great song.
Great ideas! Your colleagues must love all your ideas https://t.co/S46HeejQVV
ways to implement formative assessment, tools of support through technology...Let the games begin!!
A5. Cog. Coaching is about process, conversation & the reflecting/planning cycle. Let them B the 1 to see it, w/ great, pointed ?
A5: I would read the teacher to see if all was under control, if not, I'd dive in to help promote peace
Hi It's good to finally get back on. This is Kelly B, Instructional Coach in Norwalk :)
Ooo, good questions to ask.
Well said. Foster the approach
Aaahhhhh, and here is where cognitive coaching comes into play!
Yes! Ask prompting cognitive coaching questions - reflective questions https://t.co/tOGkiSrBnS
A4: Ask questions. Help new teacher to reflect on lesson (what went well, etc) and suggest strategies.
A5: Most Ts that I've seen this happen to, will talk to with me about this. Let them lead into discussing strategies to help
A5: Good coaches know the difference btwn. poor management & productive struggle. Ask Ss what they're learning. They should know.
Must RT this https://t.co/xn2NlgTI1v
A5. Cog. Coaching is about process, conversation & the reflecting/planning cycle. Let them B the 1 to see it, w/ great, pointed ?
Hey Kelly! Great to have you on again
Stories for different times & different stories..haha..
Always a great practice for coaches to use. Reflective debriefing
A5 Pt. 1 Is it chaos? Hopefully the coach sees the difference between an active class and chaos.
A5: Could it be productive chaos? Is that possible? Definite food for reflective thought. How could we make that different?
Yes! As coaches, our purposeful coaching moves help guide convo to these goals.
Well said, Amanda. It’s definitely about whose perspective it’s from
True. That's a good point. Active classes are great. Silent classes aren't necessarily learning!
That's what I was getting at but you said it so much better! Totally. Biiig difference. Hopefully T recognizes too
A5 Ts need to know you're on their side. Help out w/out stepping on toes then set up a meeting to reflect. Rinse, cycle, repeat
Great point, Jody. just tweeted that too. Great perspective. Who are we to judge?
Love the term productive struggle! Great way to describe learning for Ts and Ss! https://t.co/N0qRHW7WNK
A5: Good coaches know the difference btwn. poor management & productive struggle. Ask Ss what they're learning. They should know.
Great purposeful, gentle approach!
Right! Sometimes things seem chaotic but they might just be under control :)
A5 Define chaos. One teacher's chaos is another's cooperative learning.
A6 Ask the teachers. A survey at the end of the year.
Yes! We all need that productive struggle. Can’t be spoon fed everything.
Haha-- see earlier conversation with Elaine gif and "coaches don't judge"
Scaffolding is support JUST IN TIME and NOT just in case.
A5: Organize the chaos. Channel the learning. Let it happen. Naturally but with guidance. Organized chaos = magic
A6 the Aha moment, when the lightbulb turns on & they realize something I've been pointing @, but do it on their own (wink, wink)
Yep. Don’t judge me even if I want to be draped in velvet
I did in an SDC class today. Felt like chaos. All teams broke out. Learning was totally happening.
A5 Pt2 I have seen this, and again it comes back to comfort lvl of the teacher and meeting them where they are. Goals&expectations
Or take off your shirt in the bathroom??
A6 Part 1: Definitely need to recreate my coaching feedback form. Have an old system that needs work. https://t.co/VlWRxspp83
Our STEM lab always looks like chaos. Robots rolling around, legos everywhere. Crazy fun
A6: S output allows me to GAUGE productivity and learning. Judge less than gauge.
A6: Collect feedback constantly. Read body language. Ask the T what was useful & what wasn't. Ask what you could do differently.
A6 Part 2: Look to the students. Their joy of learning is how I judge my work with their teachers https://t.co/VlWRxspp83
or eat food out of the trash....wait nvrmnd.
And crazy learning! Chaos isn't inherently bad.
A6 Have T's and S's been changed in some way? Are they more reflective about their process? Have impacted systems in some way?
A6. And when they ask "so when are we doing this again?"
Woah, did you see the picture in there?
Stepping on Legos is so much worse.
A6: When someone tries something new, who wouldn't before, or something finally clicks for them and they come back for more help
A6: Ts seamlessly integrated purposeful use of tech & more confident. Ss taking ownership of learning. Ts being more reflective
an art class is loud and messy by nature...but kids shouldn't be climbing out of the windows. True story
A6 demand, feedback and schedule being completely slammed. Kids still know who I am and what I do is very important to me
You simply cannot waste a good eclair.
Yes stepping on legos hurts!
But - it wasn’t in the trash. It was kind of hovering
I’m behind, but definitely want to say I love your words - organized chaos = magic https://t.co/fiyPQYt8TT
A5: Organize the chaos. Channel the learning. Let it happen. Naturally but with guidance. Organized chaos = magic
Boy, Aprill. I love LOVE to be on a team with you. You inspire me so much
Love this =) Great way to gauge your impact. https://t.co/lFrq6KAyyE
A6: When someone tries something new, who wouldn't before, or something finally clicks for them and they come back for more help
A6: Ask for feedback, reflect, learn from it and grow.
Girlchild just told me, "Say hi to my friends."
A6: Ts are contacting for more coaching time Or a strategy or message you support is contagious
I want to come visit one day. AND look at your lending library items
That would be awesome! We will showcase the lending library at the symposium!
A6 I am still new. So far I judge my success by the look on the Ts faces when I walk into the clsrm. I am welcomed there.
A6: I have a hard time w/ this. I take notes & stay reflective, but hard for me to judge if it was me or someone else's influence
My boss has a quote up on her board that says, It’s not failure; it’s feedback https://t.co/Hi3U3m5qzI
A6: Ask for feedback, reflect, learn from it and grow.
