During #saskedchat we use the Q1,Q2,Q3...A1,A2,A3 format but, really, we just want you to join the discussions. Remember, randomness is entropy and as I science teacher, I embrace it :)
I'm Heidi and I teach Gr 9-12 in east-central SK @PvilleSchool. My fav #Macgyverism is when Mac used coins and jumper cables to create an arc welder in the Brazilian backwoods. #saskedchat
As you answer the questions, challenge yourself to utilize things, ppl, in your vicinity. I firmly believe that schools have an amazing untapped potential that we need to tap (or hack?) into. #saskedchat
Dave in Lloyd, SK. May have to slip out for a bit but the intro is a no brainer... The masters of hack-hacking realistically Mythbusters! Their MacGYver episode was the best of the best. #saskedchat
Q1: Scenario - 24 students and it's time for EYE, F&P, screeners, provincial assessment (did I miss anything). How do you manage one-on-one assessment with 23 others being the people they are? #saskedchat
A1 Empowerment in their learning at any age (not making them do busy work) can work. Sometimes side video tutorials via QR codes, etc. help Ss to do more by themselves during these times #saskedchat
A2: Pick-up area in Sci Lab. Every student has a folder in the milk crate where stuff goes when they miss a day. Extra stuff in the drawers below (paper, tape, pens). #saskedchat
Q1: Scenario - 24 students and it's time for EYE, F&P, screeners, provincial assessment (did I miss anything). How do you manage one-on-one assessment with 23 others being the people they are? #saskedchat
A2: On the back of the fire drill plan (below the phone) is a map of the lab. Emergency phone list is on the top (includes poison control and SaskEnergy) #saskedchat
A2: Hand-in area. One drawer for each class. Top drawer is for notes, orders, etc for me. Staples for stapler are in a magnetic can on the board above fire drill duotang. Phone storage on the door. #saskedchat
A2) Purge! Things you use once a year should not take away space for things you use every day. I have become talented at throwing away unused teaching materials... #saskedchat
A2: I try to get Ss to be as independent as possible with procedural things so that I can focus on addressing student needs at the beginning of class rather than what to do and where to find things. #saskedchat
A3: I have a section for myself on the side board w/school events and upcoming re-assessments. I put Ss work below so that they can grab their reassessment and get right to work if I'm busy. My Chem 30 tests are waiting for absent students to write. #saskedchat
Well, it has helped to make decisions about what I need to be doing - it’s about making better decisions about life - some people aren’t as involved as they use to be #saskedchat
How do you keep track of where they are and what they need help with? I'm teaching two online courses next semester and I'm kind of concerned about this. #saskedchat
I have used a Wiki while in Iqaluit - a Class Page with the daily work and information with links to the work. Students have a page to check in and let me know where they are in the work. #saskedchat
They did here - was part of the course expectations. It helps it’s been short. I will be doing something similar in a blended course I do up here next semester. #saskedchat
I am coming back to Rankin in February for a week then doing a class once a week until May when I come back for a week. Then 3 weeks at the end of May. #saskedchat
The buy-in problem for our schools seems to be teachers... the GC system is able to differentiate, add engagement, provide feedback, become a gradebook. Ss beg for more assignments but Ts are not finding its' value .... not sure why?
A5. Recently I have been learning about the vast number of Kagan structures available to engage students effectively.. if that fails for engagement we Skype @kellywchris on adventures like Iqaluit!!! #saskedchat
A5: Each lab station has a materials cupboard w/basic supplies. JH has a plastic sweater box of equipment b/c they tend to drop stuff a lot so I give them plastic things. #saskedchat
It’s not always them not finding the platform powerful - if it’s not within your realm of experience the platform isn’t the issue - it’s not where they are. #saskedchat
A5: Lab station inspection before they leave. If it's not clean... If they slip by me, I make a list on the front board and bust them the next day. #wallofshame#saskedchat
A6: This is a hard thing to do. It's a hard thing to be on the receiving side. Know that your colleagues care about you and when they bring this up, it's b/c they're worried. #saskedchat
Listen. Listen. Listen. Help them to focus on specific things that they can do and one or two things otherwise it’s overwhelming. Offer to come in and observe. #saskedchat
To access self-referral counselling services thru the STF: 1-800-665-5594 or 306-373-8388. Out of SK ppl, please post your province, territory, or state info #mentalhealthmatters#saskedchat
A6. Be mindful. Be empathetic.
Listen .. don't solve. Remember our code of ethics. Advise them of the amazing professionals we have to help in our buildings and our Federation. #saskedchat
I can't like this enough. I think that we are so used to being in problem solving mode and wanting to fix things that we forget that sometimes we just need to listen. #saskedchat
