  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:01 PM EST
During #saskedchat we use the Q1,Q2,Q3...A1,A2,A3 format but, really, we just want you to join the discussions. Remember, randomness is entropy and as I science teacher, I embrace it :)
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:01 PM EST
I'm Heidi and I teach Gr 9-12 in east-central SK @PvilleSchool. My fav #Macgyverism is when Mac used coins and jumper cables to create an arc welder in the Brazilian backwoods. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:02 PM EST
As you answer the questions, challenge yourself to utilize things, ppl, in your vicinity. I firmly believe that schools have an amazing untapped potential that we need to tap (or hack?) into. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Dec 14 @ 9:02 PM EST
    Hi #saskedchat I'm Lanny gr 2 T from Wadena.
  • HeculuckDave Dec 14 @ 9:02 PM EST
Dave in Lloyd, SK. May have to slip out for a bit but the intro is a no brainer... The masters of hack-hacking realistically Mythbusters! Their MacGYver episode was the best of the best. #saskedchat

Q1: Scenario - 24 students and it's time for EYE, F&P, screeners, provincial assessment (did I miss anything). How do you manage one-on-one assessment with 23 others being the people they are? #saskedchat

A1: I love doing cross-grade activities which match HS and ES Ss which can free up a teacher. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: I also try to schedule my subs into testing classrooms during my schedule prep times. #saskedchat
  • GartnerMel Dec 14 @ 9:07 PM EST
Hi #saskedchat. Melissa from Green Lake here. MacGyver has always been my fav. But the new one is a waste of time.
  • LannySaretsky Dec 14 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 Empowerment in their learning at any age (not making them do busy work) can work. Sometimes side video tutorials via QR codes, etc. help Ss to do more by themselves during these times #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: I need more communication from ES teachers about when they are testing and meet with them to select an appropriate activity. #saskedchat

  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:17 PM EST
I really like having tables to work with. If I need desks, I arrange to switch classrooms #saskedchat
    In reply to @HeculuckDave
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: I try to get Ss to be as independent as possible with procedural things so that I can focus on addressing student needs at the beginning of class rather than what to do and where to find things. #saskedchat

A3: I have a section for myself on the side board w/school events and upcoming re-assessments. I put Ss work below so that they can grab their reassessment and get right to work if I'm busy. My Chem 30 tests are waiting for absent students to write. #saskedchat
  • HeculuckDave Dec 14 @ 9:24 PM EST
Make that A4... plus our division now has common pre and post tests for math and common scope & sequence for all schools.. love it. #saskedchat

  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:32 PM EST
Well, it has helped to make decisions about what I need to be doing - it’s about making better decisions about life - some people aren’t as involved as they use to be #saskedchat

  • GartnerMel Dec 14 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4: In my MY classes I have colour coordinated folders that travel in my crate with all the past assinments. Ss know to check it #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:34 PM EST

    In reply to @GartnerMel
  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:34 PM EST
A4 - I moved to having a class page - a wiki, portfolio - something where things could be posted & Ss could access. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:35 PM EST
Having a routine that the students buy-in to is key. #saskedchat
    In reply to @GartnerMel
  • LannySaretsky Dec 14 @ 9:35 PM EST
A4 Give them a big smile and say 'good to see you' when they come back. In gr 2 we'll continue from where they are (reading level, etc.) #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:36 PM EST
I have used a Wiki while in Iqaluit - a Class Page with the daily work and information with links to the work. Students have a page to check in and let me know where they are in the work. #saskedchat
    In reply to @heidi_paterson, @GartnerMel
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:36 PM EST
Do you find there is a lot of buy-in by the students? I am finding that student use of GC, Edmodo, etc is declining #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • GartnerMel Dec 14 @ 9:36 PM EST
We use Moodle. The teacher interface lets you see what Ss have accessed and if they get stuck #saskedchat
    In reply to @heidi_paterson
  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:37 PM EST
They did here - was part of the course expectations. It helps it’s been short. I will be doing something similar in a blended course I do up here next semester. #saskedchat

Hm. Is that because they haven't experience the power of the platform? #saskedchat @HeculuckDave
    • HeculuckDave Dec 14 @ 9:39 PM EST
The buy-in problem for our schools seems to be teachers... the GC system is able to differentiate, add engagement, provide feedback, become a gradebook. Ss beg for more assignments but Ts are not finding its' value .... not sure why?
      In reply to @heidi_paterson, @kellywchris
  • HeculuckDave Dec 14 @ 9:42 PM EST
A5. Recently I have been learning about the vast number of Kagan structures available to engage students effectively.. if that fails for engagement we Skype @kellywchris on adventures like Iqaluit!!! #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Dec 14 @ 9:43 PM EST
A5: Each lab station has a materials cupboard w/basic supplies. JH has a plastic sweater box of equipment b/c they tend to drop stuff a lot so I give them plastic things. #saskedchat

  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:43 PM EST
It’s not always them not finding the platform powerful - if it’s not within your realm of experience the platform isn’t the issue - it’s not where they are. #saskedchat

  • kellywchris Dec 14 @ 9:45 PM EST
I liked to have centres/areas for storing oft-used items and extra things that students might need instead of always searching. #saskedchat
