Welcome to this weekβs Twitter chat. Tonightβs chat will be about facilitating blended professional development.
Hey ππ»ππ» friends!
I'm Liz, a passionate special education leader, formerly in Indiana: now in the sweet state of Georgia! π
You know Brian Hawkins? He was my student teaching advising teacher. Pretty awesome dude.
Hi everyone - Carli, media specialist in Carmel. I'll prob lurk - no telling when I'll crash tonight. Has been a busy first week!
I'm wondering if the Olympics will keep everyone's attention away from the chat. ;-) Someone tell me how Phelps does.
Steve, Alg II & PLTW, Valpo HS. Day 1 of New Teacher Orientation for me.
Conputer froze. One sec lol
Hi! Amanda here from Carmel... thankful for Remind 101!
Q1: What are some examples of ways that you have used technology to transform PD opportunities in your school/district?
Sorry guys. Doing this from my phone. UGH. Technology, amiright?haha
It's good seeing many of our regulars. I have a favor to ask, please join our DigCit Community https://t.co/uqA2sHqEhQ
Having the resources available 24/7, webinars, screencasts
A1: admin is using Google classroom to send out assignments. Love it!
R1: We use back channels a lot in our PD for questions/comments.
A1: Much of our PD is managed through google classroom. Warren has personalized PD & we have differentiated playlists.
Elizabeth Finney, from Carmel Elementary, in Carmel, IN. Hello!
I nearly forgot to set it up! I need a reminder for Remind :)
R1: We also use Canvas to send out announcements and house all of our PD. All of our PD pretty much involves tech in some way.
Yes! I screencast all the time. Ts can take a look when they need the help and revisit for refreshers https://t.co/gnP8it9yw8
Having the resources available 24/7, webinars, screencasts
i'm trying something like this creating individualized learning plans for our teachers. Who manages yours in Warren?
R1: increase of PD opportunities through Twitter, Webinar, Google Hangouts
A1: We have done some good PD via google classroom: so great bc all at your own pace&I πππ being able to do late night learning!
Our instructional specialists at the building level have a lot to do with this.
R1 In the last 4 years, I've been able to start one awesome Twitter chat ;) several dozen G+ Communities, hold some cool GHOs, etc
Let me know if you have any questions!
That's great. Do you get to help design it?
R1 We use Google drive to share minutes & links for PD
this is what I wanted to do when I was in the coach role. I wasn't able to, but I saw dept chairs as key
This is absolutely brilliant and I can't wait to hear about it's rollout, Wayne! ππ πππ
Q2: What does blended PD look like to you? What form can it take?
Q1: Twitter is cool for PD. Still getting used to it. Started a Twitter account for my class this year - we'll see how that goes!
interesting, I met Apple Tree at ISTE and they had some nice features too!
R1: blended PD to me is blending learning styles and needs/interests with time restraints
R2: Just like a classroom, have videos made to teach Ts the topic and then hold breakout sessions to go over in person.
Q1: My 11 & 13 year old & I made two videos this summer to show the KG how to log onto the computer, & the parts of the computer.
R2: Blended can be F2F or like using badges to individualize PD
I love that you got your kids involved. I bet they loved that.
I gotta get better at this. . . Good job! I know I should do it, but easier to take notes on paper for me. https://t.co/aLfYLw6yss
R1 We use Google drive to share minutes & links for PD
R2 looks like a collaboration all STEAM & more Ts working for the same cause
1 on 1/small groups (grade level, subject) is my favorite way to do PD. But PD is different than training https://t.co/Vp1jFQo3uR
R2: Just like a classroom, have videos made to teach Ts the topic and then hold breakout sessions to go over in person.
R2 Using F2F time for sharing of ideas, getting informed learner ?s answered, on the flip side of Ts learning virtually/flex time
A2: 1/2 techie time, 1/2 F2F time :or a nice balance of a variety of ways to catch learning! GONE are the days of "sit and get" π€π΄
Part online instruction and part face-to-face instruction... blended learning is blended learning whether for adults or kids
Oooh, Susie, that's cool. So interesting to me how much educ is personalized now. https://t.co/B2i43ycsTF
A1: Much of our PD is managed through google classroom. Warren has personalized PD & we have differentiated playlists.
by using Google Drive it also helps with coaches who can't be at meeting after school.
I also like doing breakout sessions based on teacher interests. Giving Ts choices helps with buy-in of PD.
that is awesome-it's like you have your own home program of Hoosier Student Digital Leaders!
I saw some of you talking about "flipping" the staff meeting in R1. That's blended!
Yes! I set up a training once where Ta chose what and how they wanted to learn. Had 10 sessions at once! https://t.co/Ji67jmm8xD
I also like doing breakout sessions based on teacher interests. Giving Ts choices helps with buy-in of PD.
Yassssss!!! β
β
is a must! https://t.co/s2Ca56yYpC
I also like doing breakout sessions based on teacher interests. Giving Ts choices helps with buy-in of PD.
For our staff, our blended PD is mostly online, but it's now personalized & designed by the Ts. Some want more F2F
Online as in videos? Chat rooms? How?
Oh, that's a nice concrete example. Sort of a flipped model then? https://t.co/zVWrjigDx1
R2: Just like a classroom, have videos made to teach Ts the topic and then hold breakout sessions to go over in person.
Yes. Depends on what Ts wrote into their ILPs. Webinars, small group, online coursework, F2F....
Why do I see breakout & my brain goes to BreakoutEdu? LOL. Agree w/ Chris, CHOICE is key! +1 Blended PD https://t.co/jaVzzS7rHn
I also like doing breakout sessions based on teacher interests. Giving Ts choices helps with buy-in of PD.
Moral of Q2: There's not a recipe for blended PD (or learning for that matter).
I like that it is Teacher-driven! Better buy-in
If BreakoutEdu was a choice, I'd definitely pick that session. Those look so much fun!
I mean that with blended learning, you can online parts when it fits your schedule. Like late nights! π
Blended doesn't depend on videos -though they can be useful instruct'l material. Brainstorming, Collab, etc all virt possibilities
Need some prac. designing those experiences. I want to do a meaningful PD using it. Anybody want to collab?
Is training specifically focused and PD is broader? Is that the diff? https://t.co/HgYj8m8IiH
1 on 1/small groups (grade level, subject) is my favorite way to do PD. But PD is different than training https://t.co/Vp1jFQo3uR
R2: Just like a classroom, have videos made to teach Ts the topic and then hold breakout sessions to go over in person.
This has helped us in a larger district with different start and end times for schools .
Correct. I think we can all agree blended learning is NOT listening to someone lecture or death by PPT https://t.co/zUV4S9znKM
Moral of Q2: There's not a recipe for blended PD (or learning for that matter).
...for some district-wide groups, it's hard to get everyone together at the same time and place.
If I get a kit I'd love to.
PD, to me, means growing my ideas and beliefs as an educator. Training is learn what buttons to push when
Well shoot. That's what my next question was about. https://t.co/dTcN054jY9
Correct. I think we can all agree blended learning is NOT listening to someone lecture or death by PPT https://t.co/zUV4S9znKM
Moral of Q2: There's not a recipe for blended PD (or learning for that matter).
R2: So many quality webinars offered by diff entities now; Ts should "earn" credit by attending, esp if applying to learning
I want to design a Breakout for either faculty, family night, or Ss. Let's chat in the community!
I'd say that's a pretty accurate definition. https://t.co/yv85d1vSkW
PD, to me, means growing my ideas and beliefs as an educator. Training is learn what buttons to push when
I bet would be all over that too!
you can start right away using a virtual box and locks w/Google Forms!
I'm in on this one! https://t.co/Anfxok7iAQ
I want to design a Breakout for either faculty, family night, or Ss. Let's chat in the community!
RT : I'd say that's a pretty accurate definition. https://t.co/o5SavejM9o
PD, to me, means growing my ideas and beliefs as an educator. Training is learn what buttons to push when
A million RTs https://t.co/YsQ6M3GlJ6
Correct. I think we can all agree blended learning is NOT listening to someone lecture or death by PPT https://t.co/zUV4S9znKM
Moral of Q2: There's not a recipe for blended PD (or learning for that matter).
Q3: What are the benefits and potential pitfalls to blending PD for teachers?
Yeah, I've played around with those digital ones. They weren't nearly as much fun as the physical version.
In thinking of PD and other extended hour sessions for teachers, anyone have suggestions on incentives?
This is where we need the "Ha Ha!" icon from Facebook! https://t.co/h632Vw3Cn7
Correct. I think we can all agree blended learning is NOT listening to someone lecture or death by PPT https://t.co/zUV4S9znKM
Moral of Q2: There's not a recipe for blended PD (or learning for that matter).
R3: It is easy to miss some Ts. No matter how hard we try to plan the "best" time/way for PD, some will opt out.
"Blended" Breakout is where it's at...until you have the physical box :)
Succinct and clear definition! Thanks! https://t.co/J8zFLI6VsS
PD, to me, means growing my ideas and beliefs as an educator. Training is learn what buttons to push when
R3: benefits of blended PD: choice and voice! Also interest-driven, inquiry-based, passionate
R3: pitfalls: some Ts see tech and freak out. Clam up. Back away.
R3: Some Ts may see the tech as a roadblock to learning and skip that portion of the PD.
Like badges have been BEST incentives I've used. Now assigning PD hours to some badges. https://t.co/dn6yF7zazw
In thinking of PD and other extended hour sessions for teachers, anyone have suggestions on incentives?
when possible tier the activities so Ts can select the extra time they're willing to commit show value in extensions!
I'm not big into incentives personally ( fan here), but I think personalization builds buy-in. https://t.co/bFnw4tzaa6
In thinking of PD and other extended hour sessions for teachers, anyone have suggestions on incentives?
Good point. Are our virtual options as beneficial/meaningful as our F2F PD? They should be! https://t.co/xSggeWTZz7
R3: Some Ts may see the tech as a roadblock to learning and skip that portion of the PD.
R3: Biggest benefit I received was having teaching in a blended environment modeled for us, as that was eventual goal for all Ts.
R3 Potential pitfall is not modeling transformational learning. Video can be the equivalent of lecture. Key=design solid learning
also, build that intrinsic motivation. Isn't that what we want for kids?
Yep, transfer more likely when we as Ts can experience the benefits of high quality blended learning as learners.
Badges have worked well. I've contacted local businesses to get gift cards. I got a grant for 2 GoPros too.
Kids also don't make the excuse that they need PD first before they can use the tool.
R3: Several different ways to present info takes time - If vid & Google Class &..., time & energy limited. https://t.co/ZELc5T3570
Q3: What are the benefits and potential pitfalls to blending PD for teachers?
R3: Blending is like teaching w/ Multiple Intelligences, some Ts need F2F others enjoy the show me/let me discover. Address all!
So true!! https://t.co/XP9eMLI7gO
Kids also don't make the excuse that they need PD first before they can use the tool.
R3: But benefits huge - meeting Ts where they are, in busy, chaotic lives, is a Godsend.
That's another pitfall... Online portions of PD shouldn't be 1more thing on a T's plate. We need to build in time
Q4: How do you credit teachers for the PD work that is done online? Do/Can you?
R3 technical training and pedagogy...finding a way to do both well
R3 Benefit is that designing the PD causes one to really think about the learning process & decide when F2F vs online is effective
A4: Feel like I'm repeating myself, but we use the badges to give credit to online PD.
And also realizing that may not look the same for every learner. https://t.co/zbVxMIJnJb
R3 Benefit is that designing the PD causes one to really think about the learning process & decide when F2F vs online is effective
R4: you can! They can use them for PGPs does a great job a helping track and award points.
R4: assigning minutes/hours to certain badges. ex. iMovie badge requires T to make and submit movie. 1 hour of credit (PGP points)
T4: and Twitter chats count! Right ?!
This gets to R4. If the blendedPD is replacing trad'l, then time is equivalent. Difference is flexibility https://t.co/NbjUwtLozL
That's another pitfall... Online portions of PD shouldn't be 1more thing on a T's plate. We need to build in time
Yep! That's what we do at WeBo!
For our ILPs (some people call them playlists), the Ts pick and choose activities... each worth PGPs. Like a grown up menu board
R4: Our did a Twitter Book Chat. Those in attendance and participants earned PGP points!
Potentially -for it to be blended there needs to be follow-through/appl/reflection. Would love to see more of that!
when you have something that works ;)
One of my goals this year is to get more of our teachers using Twitter for PD.
Are there certain blended activities you don't provide PGPs for? Are there other ways to reward Ts' time and effort?
The Twitter Book Chat, moderated by different Ts each week, was a great way to get 'em using Twitter!
the Two Techie Teachers are planning a series of content specific chats for the 4th Thursdays!
I can't wait for the answers to this! It's frustrating when some are not responsive. https://t.co/UW5xpeY0SA
Are there certain blended activities you don't provide PGPs for? Are there other ways to reward Ts' time and effort?
. love the idea of Ts getting a chance to moderate different weeks!
That idea came from YOU! You are the motivation! https://t.co/TgXF5duJAC
. love the idea of Ts getting a chance to moderate different weeks!
Yeah, I like that idea a lot! Wish I would have thought of it during our book study.
I just meant for PGPs π
Q5: What tools and resources are essential for creating engaging and meaningful blended PD?
Not all PD=PGPs since some is part of the contract hrs. If Blended is replacing F2F, allow time as reward https://t.co/vI2SzjpSOk
Are there certain blended activities you don't provide PGPs for? Are there other ways to reward Ts' time and effort?
I need a new book for this year. Thinking about LAUNCH
Works 4 Twitter too. You want to get your folks tweeting? Our chat is led by a diff T each wk
R5: just like Ss, apps where teachers can create, publish, get feedback, collaborate...
Good Q. Make something so valuable to Ts that doing it is the reward. Q we ask every day with kids, right? https://t.co/UlrNL0ZBeD
Are there certain blended activities you don't provide PGPs for? Are there other ways to reward Ts' time and effort?
R5 Critical thinking and Creativity! and a varied toolbox of apps that give Ts ideas for how they can apply edtech to their LPs.
Never going to win 'em all. If you analyze the Ts - where do they find value? Love collab? Worried over X? How can this help them?
You know you've arrived when Ts, yes Ts request their own PD! BAMMMMM you have arrived. Badge that! π€drop https://t.co/w9b9wjjvYv
R3: It is easy to miss some Ts. No matter how hard we try to plan the "best" time/way for PD, some will opt out.
A5: An evidence sheet that has the teachers reflecting on the PD is key as well.
R5: User-friendly, non-device specific, meaningful, tools and resources that promote design thinking !
This is such a great response to Q5! Essential to evaluate and iterate after providing blended PD https://t.co/VO0umG6Vob
Never going to win 'em all. If you analyze the Ts - where do they find value? Love collab? Worried over X? How can this help them?
All about relationships... better than any tool! Getting to know your learners, whether they're 5 or 50. https://t.co/hdY29DxBIp
Never going to win 'em all. If you analyze the Ts - where do they find value? Love collab? Worried over X? How can this help them?
R5: Oldest - listening, asking Qs, respecting time. Use new tech to further what's always brought value. https://t.co/9w0mOR0JLM
Q5: What tools and resources are essential for creating engaging and meaningful blended PD?
Badge that! for the record book! https://t.co/EYSHp6Ljtp
No time (or desire) to lead tool training? Show them how to use it as a learner. More powerful anyway. :) https://t.co/kGhC2nNMHB
R5: User-friendly, non-device specific, meaningful, tools and resources that promote design thinking !
Ooohh design thinking... And I like your focus away from the "toys" of tech to "meaningful"! https://t.co/3XzZcsLF3w
R5: User-friendly, non-device specific, meaningful, tools and resources that promote design thinking !
Let's finish strong, !! Q6 coming up!!
Your teachers are awesome...be there at 7:00 tomorrow!
Q6: Share a new idea for blending PD this year with your staff.
Glad I stayed up for this chat!
R6: It's idea...Breakfast SLAM. Ts leading and learning in the morning!
Unfamiliar term - SLAM? https://t.co/guFFC7XntA
R6: It's idea...Breakfast SLAM. Ts leading and learning in the morning!
A6: I would love to implement district Twitter Chats with a focus on weekly topics and Smores for PD nuggets. ππππΌπ―
Yep! You be there for donuts too!
R6: We are looking at Blendspace to develop PD over privacy rights for online apps
Does anyone know how to put in a bid for with a small district in Indiana?
Day 1 of DigCitWeek offers possibilities for BlendedPD-Go virt: brainstorming of vision; commit to growing https://t.co/1PIrGlBY3j
