Hi Olwen. Be bold be brave and the world turns around.
-
Thanks for joining us tonight

On the search for movement strategies for a small English class.
-
Q1: RT What ways are you looking/doing communicating student learning? https://t.co/uqNlrZQN6J
-
-
Q1: In what ways are your schools/districts looking at Communicating Student Learning or reporting this year?
-
A1: we are just starting the process of communicating/dialogue'ing with Ps/Ts around &what it means to our community
-
definitely a mentally draining weekend at
-
Hiya Christine. Interesting isn't it?
-
A1: we have a big learning cohort in SD41. At school we have several teachers doing portfolios, 3way conferences, wrtng RCs w Ss
-
Kevin here - Principal in Nanaimo, K-7
-
Hello Me, too! Cold virus claimed my Sunday today. Might just lurk on because responses might not be lucid. LOL
-
A1- we are just starting to discuss what this is going to look like. Lots of anxiety about written reports and myed usage as well
-
A1 we are going through/creating district belief statements around reporting, exploring self assessment & trying out efolio tools
-
Yes. Interested in how teachers, schools, and districts interpret the sameness and differences of CSL an reporting.
-
-
-
Jeremy from Nanaimo. At a family dinner, so just going to sneak a peak when I can.
-
A1: This year our district implemented Standards Based Grading - it's all about giving kids feedback and having them improve.
-
A1 - Lots of consultation happening in Nanaimo as well. I believe there is a lot of relief just seeing the interim order
-
A1: New CSL tool, Communicating Student learning tool that aligns with the revised curriculum. Also using as an option
-
Hey bud- thanks for coming out and lurking a bit tonight https://t.co/Hf9JSaF1ys
-
-
Jeremy from Nanaimo. At a family dinner, so just going to sneak a peak when I can.
-
my staffs been making comment about how the traditional RCs we've used may not be best tool for competencies
-
well, school just started, but I think very well. People excited about the possibilities & continuing what started.
-
Hey Jeremy! How's it going? Long time.
-
A1. Not practicing in K-12 schools at this point in time but interested how the reporting order with CSL is interpreted.
-
sure was...but it was AWESOME!!!!!
-
A1: Lots of exploration still...portfolios a hot topic. Interested in what other districts are doing.
-
Can you give an example of how it looks?
-
A1: I personally have kids report their own citizenship scores (1-4)-rating and giving themselves ownership on their report card.
-
Our district is going with 'option b', but curious what others think of the choices (not much difference from before)
-
Yes been waiting for it. At least it's out.
-
Absolutely. What is the alternative. Reporting order lends itself to innovation but also status quo.
-
. busy busy busy... so more of the same.
-
we still have Trad report card tools to be used, but encouraging "exploring other tools" esp
-
YES!!! I am so happy to hear that your district has opted for Option B. I wonder how many other districts did. Anybody?
-
Sarah (1st yr teacher finally!) from Ladysmith! Late because no one warned me prep would take this long :P
-
Right Sarah- if I had only known....LOL thanks for joining us tonight though
-
Ive just created 500 ePortfolios this wkend & lots more to go. Lots of interest 2tell story this way
-
Furthermore... what will option B look like for your district, for another district... what's the same? what's different?
-
A1: My reporting & asses will also be based on child set learning intentions that align with our Ab Ed Enhancemnt Agreement.
-
Thanks, Kirk. From this, how do parents/guardians get info? Do they see this or something else?
-
Q2: Based on your understanding, what has remained the same with the new BC Reporting Order this year?
-
-
Who are the 500 ePortforlios for or of? How much IT support is required?
-
I honestly think it is different for different levels. Sec, not much diff, elem/middle, experimenting with change.
-
-
Q1: Our school is option B- Using formative term 1, new indicators term 2 & 3. Whole school (1100 S's) on
-
My Learng Tech team supports it all -no IT except 4servers. Theyre all students thru dist
-
Hey - Here is question 2: https://t.co/G6wim0m50z
-
-
Q2: Based on your understanding, what has remained the same with the new BC Reporting Order this year?
-
Totally agree. Has to be some "personalization" to communicate student learning & progress, especially w/ multiple Ts.
-
RT Q2: What's remained same with new Reporting Order? https://t.co/ucAY2FGlOm
-
-
Q2: Based on your understanding, what has remained the same with the new BC Reporting Order this year?
-
A2: it seems that the 3 formal/2 informal and letter grades/percentages at certain grades seem same.
-
I see this, too. Maybe when the 10-12 curriculum changes there will be bigger changes in reporting, too.
-
I feel the conversation about student learning & reporting shifting
-
A1: We have district team of Ts experimenting w/no %s, end of term T/S interviews, portfolios, new interim formats...
-
A2: appears to be very similar, although admit I have not looked at it too deeply
-
Ha! Yes Erica - just being polished up now & hoping to get them out 2 you asap.
-
-
A2. Letter grades. Performance standards for lower grades. Percentages for 10-12. Only difference is Ss self-eval of Core Comp.
-
A2: That really depends schools could use A & not change much, B offers HUGE potential for change: authentic & school needs driven
-
A2 Districts pretty much have the green light to keep the status quo for format as long as Core Competencies are covered
-
Love it. Thanks for sharing. what programme is it?
-
Still 5 total. Focus on formal cutoffs for grades.
-
A2: It does not seem that different. I think it needs to be more feedback driven in order to be personalized & meaningful.
-
I see more options in 10-12 (if available/offered) for Ss, but not much else if grades/percent counts.
-
A2- I feel like lots of teachers prefer the status quo as well- I think you will see a huge shift when 10-12 reporting changes
-
Districts have option - stay with status quo or develop district policy that allows for innovation throughout the year.
-
A2: my experience with teachers is that we are pretty awesome at getting kids to be self reflective now we get to show it!
-
It would interesting to know what's happening at online/non-traditional schools. What happens when June ends?
-
-
DId not know this, thanks for this update.
-
Is it time for the TRB to start certificating tutors and licensing tutor "companies." Tremendous abuse occurring. Caveat emptor.
-
Welcome Pat! Thank you for participating in tonight. Pretty great to have your voice!
-
A2. Ss self-assessing core comp is a significant step. More interested in what OPTION B looks like for districts/schools doing it.
-
Agreed. Wonder if cumulative better here
-
This does seem to be a great opportunity. Mine S self-assessments to Ps were always separate from formal reporting
-
All students K-9 will be involved in self assessment of core competencies at the end of the year. Build ownership of learning
-
I have always tried to embed self-reflection of Ss into RCs - this makes me feel like there is validity to that process
-
I used cumulative at Cent Sec, but still had that "June 30" deadline..>
-
I noticed that quite a few ppl are considering cumulative grading
-
Hi - Janice here from Richmond
-
-
Also allowed Parents to respond to me specifically outside of the whole RC though. This is key communication.
-
A2. Only other difference aside from Ss assess Core Comp is absence of percents for middle grades. How does this connect to CSL?
-
Happy to wade in. Always feel free to send questions my way at any time!
-
Thanks Pat. That's coming up as question
-
Here is Q3: Piggybacking off Q2- what are noticeable differences in the Reporting Order this year?
-
-
Thanks, Patricia. I really appreciate your support in this time of change.
-
I like that self assessment must be included now. Lots of teachers are doing it but now it makes it consistent.
-
the more communication the less error in those relationships.
-
RT Q3: Noticeable differences in new reporting order? https://t.co/1JvnM1Go8r
-
-
Here is Q3: Piggybacking off Q2- what are noticeable differences in the Reporting Order this year?
-
A1: In going into 4th year of Descriptive Feedback & CSL professional learning series. Stakeholders working group on CSL.
-
A3. Identified differences in A2 responses. But the REAL difference comes with those doing OPTION B and how it connects with CSL.
-
A3 - Biggest difference is the official permission being granted to the innovators
-
That FreshGrade is awesome. Hoping some of my Ts will want try it..>
-
We hope you’re enjoying the chat tonight! Remember, we chat every Sunday at 7 pm PST!
-
Hi Wonder about process behind product. When will CC stretch/strength artifacts of profile growth be curated?
-
-
A1: Most schools will use option 1. Schools that want to go with option 2 to be part of Innovation Grant CSL initiative.
-
Does your district connect or integrate descriptive feedback & CSL with report cards?
-
Can you explain option B?
-
A3 big shift is consulting w parents of what the next version may look like (or descriptive communication of competencies)
-
A3: I have to agree with it's about the permission to innovate
-
Exactly! We're seeing a shift to prioritize giving Ss more voice and choice in their learning
-
A3 Definitely being offered flexibility in how we report and share
-
Option B is alternative (district choice) to report out student progress. Don't know how it would look. Varies.
-
I think some districts might be afraid to remove from status quo as it may put more pressure on teachers
-
Hoping others can illuminate?
-
A3. Permission to innovate and include student voice!
-
Just climbing aboard from PG
-
Option B requires district policy changes, consultation, and application to ministry. Could be. District initiative.
-
This is definitely the dance that will be required - how do you move forward, while not leaving folks behind?
-
and MindShift still be away from reporting on what was done to communicating ongoing learning journeys
-
Hi Craig. Didnt see you here - welcome And yes to student voice!
-
A3: Interested in Asses option B, & what that means for districts. WHO decides which option? Teachers? Collaborative?
-
agreed, already a year of change but good to have the option to explore other ways of CSL
-
Yes difference betwn reporting summative & cmns learning journeys/stories
-
Might be use of in SD36 or SD42. Districts who've gone gradeless. What would that look like? How often?
-
YES! P's have to 'buy in' In my IDL I was asking P's what they wanted to see reported since they do the work at home
-
For Core Competencies, we have been focusing on noticing, naming and nurturing in the classroom and school context - 1/2
-
District need to outline their local policy.Does not have to be all schools.More important if school, teachers, parents are ready
-
A1: we r hoping to address new reporting ideas for high school this Fri.
-
So that when students are asked to self-assess in June, they have awareness & evidence of their development in the Core Comps 2/2
-
Love idea of PLAY, intent, and vision. Need TIME to innovate and create. Need longer timeline to develop Option B.
-
Perhaps but not sure a software wld be answer 1st. Consider what looks/feels/cmns story then think container
-
- Iteachers will have to be explicit about their activities touching on core competencies so students will be able to self report
-
A3: Self-assessment using core competencies included in high school report cards
-
Curious, as well. We only know what we know. We need to experiment and PLAY to figure out what works & CSL.
-
Hi Shannon. Welcome We're chatting abt new reporting order & implications
-
yes!! Nothing is better than giving students autonomy. So awesome to see them take control.
-
Districts submit to the ministry, not apply. Important to learn from others and share successes and learning
-
Yes, some schools and districts are already there and ready to go, others will need time to play and investigate.
-
It is what most elem are doing. you don't divide the terms as equal, averaging for total.
-
Does not have to be technology oriented. But I feel that it has to communicate student learning. Report cards don't.
-
Halfway through tonight's chat! Still time to come join in!
-
You bet. If you expect Ss to self-assess on Core Competencies, they better have a strong understanding of them!
-
Tech only makes it easier to amplify immediacy. Sometimes a convo is more in line w/ learning
-
Would love to see what districts are ready to move forward w/ as Option B for reporting Student Progress.
-
Yes Janice, important to pay attention to and involve students in core competency work all year!
-
And lots of practice at reflecting
-
reporting & assessment procedures seems to be vague for high school Ts. Would like/hope 4 hard & fast rules
-
I believe that the application to submit Option B is due this year??? Could be wrong. Heard timeline was short.
-
Embedding core competencies as foundational & conversation 2 everythg we do allows practice
-
Hear this quite a bit as well
-
-
This immediacy likely key with overworked Ts; also need simple learning curve to get buy-in. Many ready
-
Pat, can you answer this?
-
Tonight’s topic was suggested by YOU, ! Please stop by our website to suggest topics for upcoming chats: https://t.co/apNWRbqItJ
-
Could be a blend between F2F, technology, and other possibilities. I prefer the balanced approach.
-
Q4: After observing discussions on changes to the Reporting Order, what do you think should have been included?
-
Love that it is a part of it. Will give Ss chance to advocate for themselves esp re: social responsibility
-
Agreed. Needs access and flexibility. Whats important to share/what's not
-
We need to make time for it - I use end of term interviews to formally address Ss progress
-
almost as vague as what a "B" can mean😜provincial dialogues will benefit all of
-
-
Teaching profession needs to take a shift in practice with shift in pedagogy & reporting/CSL practices.
-
Think the goal is to give more choice. I like rules, too, but I think the what would you like attitude is exciting.
-
A4: Missing is power of discussions around assessing / evaluating that will continue to improve this area for Ss & their learning
-
Here is Q4 https://t.co/3iKSglEEAQ
-
-
Q4: After observing discussions on changes to the Reporting Order, what do you think should have been included?
-
-
Have the conversations that matter
-
Do you use guiding questions to help Ss identify stretch & strength of CC profile? What about "I Can" statements?
-
-
I totally agree. Meaningful conversations about student learning and progress. Doing more is not better.
-
-
District policy can be revised schools can opt in throughout the year.No specific date to prior to moving away from status quo
-
BOOM! https://t.co/9guCX3nDkc
-
-
I totally agree. Meaningful conversations about student learning and progress. Doing more is not better.
-
I am reporting 2 Ps with more descriptive feedback, fewer marks/grades. Incl parents via email. Meeting needs despite
-
A4: what Fred said https://t.co/hdiPYP3udA
-
-
A4: Missing is power of discussions around assessing / evaluating that will continue to improve this area for Ss & their learning
-
Totally agree there. More tests, less tests... WHY TESTS? It makes me think what we really want for kids.
-
A4- I like the openness of option B but wish there was a bit more guidance or example of what it could possibly look like
-
And strengthens focus at school. Key piece will be how to align this work with Core Comps sel-assessment.
-
I wanted to see language My profs shared: Developing, Applying, Extending (learning) w/formative comments better than 1-4
-
Would love to hear reporting ideas from high sch Ts & Principals
-
This will be generated from the districts; think much differentiation here so more guidance difficult.
-
I think many examples already exist in BC - just need to share
-
Wondering if terms are just replacing the numbers?
-
A4. An exemplar of what Option B could look like. FEAR holds us back. The unknown does not encourage risk taking or innovation.
-
Part of the challenge is finding locatn where these exist
-
Definite concern- MUST have Formative, terms give context, formative comments give direction/guidance
-
Agreed But need to repurpose time to allow for conversations: PTI to Ss-Led Conferencing. Time for Ss to reflect.
-
YES. makes me wonder why we are not sharing or at least know where to access good ideas & people.
-
At sec. has made a lot of progress in Standards based grading; P & S ability to 'see' where S is at on each outcome
-
Wondering if thats open to interpretation by teachers?
-
-
-
A4 - Definitely hearing the need for a "Provincial Scrapbook" on reporting- we need a place where examples from BC can be seen
-
You're speaking my language. Structures we have today suit old model. Need to place time & money to what we value. .
-
Q5: Student self assessment in core competencies are part of last reporting period. Ideas on how you’ll be approaching this?
-
Popping in late to
I'm from Coquitlam. A middle school teacher currently seconded to the local union office. =)
-
Don’t forget to use the hashtag throughout the week to keep the conversation going!
-
-
A4: What I'm sensing is that Ts dont want strict guidelines but examples of what could be possible-starting points of inspiration
-
Ive seen Ss as part of 3way conf -depends on tchr
-
OH MY GOODNESS. Agree. Parent Teacher Interview. Where's the STUDENT and student learning?
-
I also hear concerns that new assess/reporting practices should be respectful of Ts time.
-
-
Can we ever get away from that? T is subjective what's important & when, how to frame context, how to coach S growth
-
RT Q5 How are you approaching reporting student self assessment? Ideas? https://t.co/9Kcql4Q1Ig
-
-
Q5: Student self assessment in core competencies are part of last reporting period. Ideas on how you’ll be approaching this?
-
A5: considering using a weekly reflective write based on 1 competency. Using mind mapping to see progress and growth
-
A5: Feeling lost at high sch level but already giving kids more opportunity to self assessment, consider core competencies
-
Provincial "Pinterest" on what's happening in BC Classrooms! Telling our stories about the amazing & wondrous!
-
Hmm... I believe this is the 2016/17 reporting order. It might change. I like your thinking. School pilot.
-
Last year was guiding Qs/prompts, goal setting; will be tweaking it this year. I find it pays off huge dividends
-
Sounds like a good start Shannon. Its during reflection that we learn
-
A5: Students write report cards with me. We conference. They bring evidence to the table, I bring my scary assessment binder
-
Yes. We have a shared experience as high school Ts. Could be different. Why not try now as to how.
-
A5: Part of ADST: Plan, Make, Share & REFLECT! Weekly reflections are part of my class: vlog, written, typed, drawn, sketchnotes
-
Hi folks. I'm SORRY to have missed tonight. Just home from double duty on soccer and ball practices--my partner was away all w/e!
-
-
My staff and community would be possibly open to school wide change in reporting. It could be exciting!
-
A5. We ID'ed need for S self-assess as part of goal before report order. Interested to see if we can align with Core self-assess
-
R you going to attach that to the final report card as self assessmt?
-
-
-
Innovation takes courage, communication & community. I am glad you have that in your school. Also a district convo.
-
Jarrod from Fort St John, bed time rituals complete
-
-
Id be interested in your journey
-
-
I will have to think of how to attach the Ss conference booklet (3 pages long) usually make reference in overview
-
This is so key! Also opportunity for 'publishing' student voice; writing for bigger audience; great prep… https://t.co/nxp5Ngv0xr
-
-
My Parents love my biweekly emailsd reports. Great opportunity to report on soc/emot as well :)
-
Agreed. Ts need to be given freedom/time to experiment w/different methods/exemplars to make it work for them
-
A5: Having children setting learning intentions & goals, reflecting thru dicsussions, journals, vlog, & go pro capture
-
blogs are also great for publishing student voice...
-
A5. Love idea of Ss self-assessment as part of learning. Assessment AS Learning. Wonder how those using I CAN stmts are doing?
-
I teach grades 2-10, name & nurture of CC is the same for all! It's new for all my S's, we all name & nurture each other
-
A5: Getting S's 2 complete own report card based on standards, CCs. Ss tend 2 lowball themselves. Will be fascinating experience!
-
How are yu attaching that to RC? Or are yu thinking to reference it?
-
Goal of self assessment is to increase student ownership of their learning, process is key, function more important than form!
-
Many have been doing this on projects so stretch won't be as large for many Ss (and Ts). https://t.co/jG95iD2VMr
-
-
A5: Getting S's 2 complete own report card based on standards, CCs. Ss tend 2 lowball themselves. Will be fascinating experience!
-
Are there any expectations around # of Core Comp Ss need to self-assess in 3rd term?
-
Can be included in end of year summative report in a variety of ways
-
-
Follow the people you have met in this chat - you will find they are the resource.
-
Can you please provide an example of what it could look like?
-
A5 Conversation key to continual learning. Circular in approach deepening
-
That's the part thats appealing - flexibility and variety to allow voices to rise
-
Love what this will do. Equipping Ss with vocab/understanding of criteria HAS to improve their learning,… https://t.co/MA2hf54XtW
-
-
Goal of self assessment is to increase student ownership of their learning, process is key, function more important than form!
-
I sharing via , will be looking at addingas a reflective section that sums it up, but will be continual.
-
I also liked the peer team assessments to raise the conversations, evidence seeking & verifying. I'd mark rebuttals.
-
A5. Assessment AS & FOR Learning are essential for Ss success. How does this get "seen" in reporting student progress? Or does it?
-
Thank you for joining tonight!
-
My fave "you don't know what you don't know". Expose what's out there and share possibilities, change isn't so scary
-
Good point. Although gov can't even seem to get this in order for instr support samples for new curric... :-/
-
When doing end of term interviews, Ss often tougher on themselves. dialogue helps confirm/correct Ss progress
-
Hi, Victoria here, super late, , sorry! - some lightweight lurking late in the chat.
-
In a way parents/community also understand. (Many still believe they know what a letter grade communicate… https://t.co/2nbqWsQvYW

-
A5. Assessment AS & FOR Learning are essential for Ss success. How does this get "seen" in reporting student progress? Or does it?
-
Don't forget to follow folks like to keep the conversation going!
-
Agreed. You are a learner. Love it. Takes vulnerability and growth mindset to welcome new ideas and change.
