#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

Hey Jen from Wollongong. I've been in-flipping my Stage 2 class
Hi all been progressively flipping this year but want to get some new ideas
Hi & crew. Know about flipped learning and am taking the lead from Learning with too!
Been using in various forms since 2008/09 -since reading about and Samms were doing.
Hey! Hayley from WA here I have a teetering classroom that has the potential to be flipped! Very excited for
I have definitely made "instructional videos" regarding Science Skills. My whole class isn't flipped yet - but will be!
Hey welcome Dean from Melb have flipped for a while
Jack from Geelong. Looking forward to trying it. I would flip in class
I'm maths. It's amazing! My seniors are flipped mastery style and my juniors are in-flipped
Q: Is flipping a classroom only with videos? Can readings be part of it too?
Evening all, dabbled with some inflipping in my yr 6 classroom, love the potential, getting used to the camera
Kia Ora Troy from across the ditch. Keen to connect with primary educators who flip!
Always happy to welcome our German friends to Great to see you as always Ines https://t.co/mBOjdJxEU0

Jack from Geelong. PE, Welfare Teacher
Cass from Melbourne hoping for extra credit for joining chat during holidays
Lisa in Canberra, I've done quite a bit of lesson 'flipping' but like the idea that video lessons just become part of the learning
short videos to differentiated groups based on cluster marker. I mainly flip literacy but looking to expand to math
Hi went to at UK event about using Yes, tried it
A1: Steve from Brisbane, on holidays! Have been flipping for 2+ years almost exclusively.
Hi Crew. Obviously wouldn't miss this one. Love me some flipped Learning.
wouldn't pre-reading be old-school flipping?
Hi Leah from QLD teaching in the early years. Excited for this chat.
Hi . Amy from cold and rainy Sydney here. Looking forward to learning more about Flipped Learning.
Was waiting for you to show up mate!
I like it. I actually look forward to the time we stop calling it flipped learning, and just call it learning.
Hello from Meridith in NSW
Great straight up question for the experts... What's the verdict? https://t.co/SaxH7vfAdx
Q: Is flipping a classroom only with videos? Can readings be part of it too?
Hi Karen from Melb. V interested in flipped learning - keen to learn more.
Like when "SMS" just became "text" and "smartphones" just became "phones"...
my point exactly! Couldn't fit it into 140 characters :)
Kia Ora & Appow ... welcome to tonight brother
It took me the better part of a year to not cringe when I saw and heard students playing back my videos
is not about the videos. It is about the active things you do in the class. It is about making class time active
where do you source videos or do you make them
have some knowledge and am really interested in Flipping the System not just learning. George for Scotland
I've used a combo but never solely text without video. I found ss were less likely to tune out with video
Sunny from Wollongong - Experimenting with Flipping about T&L conventions and HSC delivery through various online platforms
Thinking any stimulus material can be used
Can't it be anything that gets them more receptive to learning in the classroom or taps into what is being taught?
I think the whole point of flipping is reversing the normal order. Do sts normally do their readings in class?
I haven't don't much flipping interested to try it for maths
However, most teachers utilize vids to help Ss with lower level info so that class is reimagined.
Hi ya from Wellington NZ is a passion but trying to make it work with juniors with 1:5 devices. Welcome ideas!
I'm interested in how flipping might work for CPD for adults. Tuning in from
Zeina from Sydney! Great to have you with us I've been flipping for a few years in some parts
Hoping I can stay awake long enough to take part in tonight's chat - wisdom teeth have knocked me around
I am no expert at anything but anything can be flipped!
a picture tells a thousand words and a video is 24 pictures every second. That's a lot of words. I vote videos.
. Everything new has to have a Buzz Word. Don't you know this? ;)
My favourite part of flipped learning is that it's so much more self paced
A: It can be a mash up of a range of methods - podcast, videos, readings etc... it's the method not the resource!
I prefer to call it active learning.
Experimented a little with flipped classrooms, but have never got to the point where I've been 'all in'.
I have seen virtually all subjects flipped. From PE to maths from primary through uni
Surely both options would work. Unless the reading go over the students heads, need help to make sense
Hi everyone, looking forward to another great chat with everyone.
Great answer. But if you video yourself reading the readings…job done!
A1- Absolutely- it's the construction of the lng (the diamond). Videos do help though. Kids like the flexibility to rewind, etc
Finally made one! In Sydney and looking forward to the chat!
I started my flipping journey in 98 with RSS feeds and podcasts
This answered my question about video. It's not obligatory to create videos for students to call it flipped!
. Yes that would be my gut feeling.
I'm also interested in this aspect and joining in with as well.
I try to give my students 0 content and 100% skill! That is flipping for me!
RSS feeds are the bomb. Still use them, huge time-saver & great way to gather ideas.
You can flip reading as well but the vast majority of Ts use vid
It works perfectly in maths! More time and flexibility for students to actually apply the concepts
Agree & not forgetting off-site learning stimuli too
I could really differentate my classroom if I in flip. Great for teaching techinque in PE
Flipping the classroom is something that intrigues me. I do try some forms but a long way off mastering.
A1: Love the idea of individual v group time - individual for content - group for T input
just thinking.,, how does this approach connect with homework debate?
a flipping elder does that predate the term flipping?
Isn't reciprocal reading sort of flipping reading?
I see too much focus on video, it's definitely about using f2f time more effectively + build rships https://t.co/xRxrmM7YW8
is not about the videos. It is about the active things you do in the class. It is about making class time active
A1: clarifies that flipped learning isn't about Homework! Can flip anytime/amywhere!
A1 Concept seems simple. Making it look that cool in a short time is not so simple however... Keen to have a crack
yep didn't have a term back then
A1 Important to realise the old "homework at school, classwork at home" definition of flipped learning is BOGUS. That ain't it.
A1 we had for ?? Outrageous :) 's video was great, going to pop out in next dept meeting
A1, big topic, you can flip with any resource, as long as its planned. Video can make it more interactive and gr8 for diff/iation
Enjoyed the diamond- applicable to other areas of lng too
I'm a fan of the in-flip ... I think I use that most of all https://t.co/G7Q3xj5Pah
A1: clarifies that flipped learning isn't about Homework! Can flip anytime/amywhere!
If you watch the video-we can change the convo from vids and HW to group & Individual spaces https://t.co/gYd1qLENG6
important point - that's what I loved about video is that "in-flip" is not about h'work
Introduce a learning pathway! Create opportunities for learning journeys to occur!
A1 doesn't make any sense to limit any learning opportunity to one mode
A.. Vod makes me want 2 trial it. Like idea of Indiv & Gp wrk @ same time in class & its not just about the HW 2 b flip
I am huge on coaches eye at the moment just finished a 1-6 lawn bowls unit. Students loved it
Very interested in answers to this....
. Hm...excellent for trying it! What reservations do you have? Or is it more that it doesn't suit everything you do?
A1 I have some difficulty with the diamond flipped Bloom's. Still thinking.
A1: As a T who isn't big on homework - most of my flipping has taken part in the classroom.
A1: loved the notion of Blooms as a diamond. Great to have confirmation of group/individual. I only in-flip. It suits my ss
my teachers were flipping almost 20 years ago with written content. Same idea, better tech
So the point is 2give input/knowledge b4 lessons 2start together with students 2talk about problems & to exercise?
Its about knowing your Ss, their resources and building a culture any the classroom.
We use the flipped approach for immersion in history inquiry - multimodal texts avail to Ss https://t.co/aP9GleBq0E
This answered my question about video. It's not obligatory to create videos for students to call it flipped!
A1: I've found that in-flipping has been much more effective that the traditional videos-at-home method for my classes
that is the beauty of . Class time is freed up for many different things b/c no lecture
wld love 2 c Flip lesson 4 PE
A1: I didn’t do my homework…but I’m trying to do it now while I’m learning. Imagine I had NBN…
yes - the Bloom's diamond really worked for me too. Made perfect sense
It just clicked for me. Discussion and feedback. Removing the need for the teacher to be at the front of the room
It's well worth having a go
I have to disagree - there is a place for everything. Maybe you mean every subject can be flipped? https://t.co/1hAP0gcgks
I am no expert at anything but anything can be flipped!
A1. Flipped learning is just about how sts/tchrs interact & operate in the classroom. It's about freeing up sts to self-direct.
That will be in my new book about & HW coming out April 2017
A1 Not sure this chat is for me. I'm not a fan of flipped learning. Instruction whether flipped or not, isn't a good way to learn.
I use it all the time in PE and don't even realise
It doesn't matter what you call it. Content is decisive! https://t.co/zlFTucww91
I prefer to call it active learning.
A1: personally think video is more powerful - especially if possible with Ts voice and presence.
Is it always better to do 'the hard stuff' with the teacher?
There's plenty out there. will show you how.
A1. I am wanting to know if it can work with Year Two Ss? and with limited technology at school/home?
Highly recommend it. Did it for 2 years. Awesome!
Q1 aims to build independence, problem solvers and even global citizens depending where intercultural learning can be flourished
Jon's video - flipping bloom's taxonomy. Love it!
Yes, tech isn't going to motivate the Ss to do HW at home more than non-tech HW https://t.co/md7AY7f136
A1 Important to realise the old "homework at school, classwork at home" definition of flipped learning is BOGUS. That ain't it.
So long as there are scaffolds & opportunities for you to check in w/ sts to assess how effectively they did so
A1: My first thought is how do I learn to write and draw in reverse?!
quick Q: what is the most cost effective surface for the glass? which surface is best?
I think it depends "hard stuff" not always same for all Ss. Believer in Ss teaching Ss as well.
No real reservations -although I do sometimes worry about students who choose not to access content independently
Hi everyone. Stuart from Akl, NZ but currently in Melbourne for GAFE Summit!
It's all flipped in post production
I agree: I have lots of options for people to learn how flip well —With a big announcement coming soon :)
I do think video homework is much more achievable though, so students are more likely to do it.
I would say it's not the only way, but I think it can complement other strategies really well
There is a video that explains that too!
How do I get one of those flip board thingos?
Good point, like, kids learn to speak before writing
What if every class was flipped? That could be more than 6+ vids a night of consumption https://t.co/BrOJclGVN4
A1 Not sure this chat is for me. I'm not a fan of flipped learning. Instruction whether flipped or not, isn't a good way to learn.
great idea! Never thought of in case of flipping a lesson.
Liked the explanation about in-flipping and the rotation method
hope you are having a great time! We fly to Melbourne tomorrow!
Curious... How does it support intercultural learning? https://t.co/CMuoUX26Lg
Q1 aims to build independence, problem solvers and even global citizens depending where intercultural learning can be flourished
That is what resonated with me too
Group v individual space - classroom inflip. Makes so much sense.
Yes, that's a genuine worry. We may simply end up transferring "consumption" from one time slot to another
I'm hoping that's a joke Richard.
Very cool, for the summit?
When I run flipped math I had Ss watch video together, discuss & note instead of doing at home- thoughts?
g8t how does it wrk when teaching new skill
yea maybe I know you have a good system. Some jus taint do HW no matter how it's delivered
Can anyone help me I've lost the Q prompts? I'm a passenger driving from Busso to Perth so Internet speed not helping me haha
I teach blooms taxonomy and Marzano through getting my students to make it their screen saver! That screen saver has clues on it?
Hope your enjoying sunny Victoria at the moment
A1 mk decisions presentation mode with consideration to content, Ss, skills. Podcasts, videos, readings etc. may all play a role
A1 I like flipped learning to wet the appetite for learning, spark interest/iwondering... I don't use it for instructional videos
You could in-flip so they don't have HW?
For me, it's about the task instructions, less admin in class then. A2.
A more important priority!
& it helps encourage Ss to work independently at their own rate
A2 I put backing music, removed it, then got complaints. put it back in and got complaints about my style of backing music. <--
great point, not one I've considered being a primary T
Q1 In the 3/4 Unit I run all our homework is online take a look https://t.co/3AETjcTm1J & my Ss are from low socio economic fams
Q1 In the 3/4 Unit I run all our homework is online take a look https://t.co/hkXQmFI4uo & my Ss are from low socio economic fams
A1 FL acknowledges that learning happens EVERYWHERE and breaks down barriers to where 'authentic' learning can happen
Personally, I love the interactive video features on - allows for ?s, annotations and stats
Miles warmer than back home, having a blast!
A1 I think it's important for Ss to be part of the learning conversation in the classroom, watching a video isn't for all learners
A2. Detailed & intricate concepts & processes are often useful to be videoed - to give sts control over speed of learning
I call it the wall of Wisdom!
just wondering about glass v perspex v sapphire v pool fence glass ...
Thanks as can be seen content is varied & includes other info sources as well as videos
also, my school has gone but shh don't tell anyone 😉
A1: To the point: learning in your own pace! Individual learning is supported. https://t.co/tC3NfY3PdV
A1. Flipped learning is just about how sts/tchrs interact & operate in the classroom. It's about freeing up sts to self-direct.
I enjoyed eavesdropping on the conversation : )) they pushed each other B4 they got to me
A2 Would u Flip the how to's? That part can be done ahead of time so you can answer the questions they had in your group?
A2: important to make it engaging & not too long in my exp!
agreed. I use in-flip videos in reading groups as a way to stimulate discussion and provide clear exemplars
Experimenting with flipping with G4-6s in 50 min specialist class. S's taking ownership in own learning more than just rely on T
I pick & choose what I flip - curating multimodal resources supports this, I think FL in HS is different?
I started https://t.co/6SJhFezsLB to get kids off playstation etc & providing them with learning from home Best thing I ever did!
I started https://t.co/wfDBOBT6MY to get kids off playstation etc & providing them with learning from home Best thing I ever did!
exactly! that is the easiest thing to flip
A2: My main use has been demo, skill-based basics that Ss can access if absent, go back to, check if unsure/teacher is busy etc.
Homework concept is a issue when students aren't enjoying it orcan't do it!This is not the case! Make a piece of recycled paper
Gr8 variation that works, that's what we're here for
Completely personalised the curriculum for my Computing classes using flipped learning.
A2. What to put in? Clear Learning goal, teach super fast, keep it short, put your face in there, and leave your mistakes in.
Why do you think so? Where do you see the problems?
good point Gail. I stick to bullet points.
There is never a time when you provide your class with any instruction?
How is flipped learning different to blended learning? perhaps we've gone too far with buzz words?
Sometimes as teachers we find it hard to let go of the responsibility and hand it to our Ss.Take risks it builds engaged learners
A2 I've only so far experimented with flipping key concepts & skills for students & teachers to revisit when needed
A2: Most of mine contain food or food related video. Music is good. Particularly when using time-lapse.
Is your in flip self directed? Or do you watch with and coach along to give meaning?
A2 I've been getting the Ss to make videos of their Maths strategies then sharing these with other Ss
Flipped a semester o fYear 12 online using videos on LMS + Skype - really enjoyed it
A2: A basic intro to the concept. Enough to get most Ss started. Less spoon feeding and They have more time in class to ask Qs
I worry when I hear 'my classroom is all flipped'
Bonus: 4 yrs of filmed lessons, I'm often surprised by what sts value most: this vid has 120k views!? https://t.co/VCo5I7S3Ej
A2 I use FL for teaching Chinese, works great with Yr 7 and 8, Yr 11s prefer the textbook! Older generation, geez!
It depends on what you teach. I have 5 books on different subjects & have dif A’s
A3- Pair them up to watch B4 workshop and discuss it together
I agree, needs to be "fit-for-purpose" IMO.
I think eventually it will all just be called "learning". For now you kind of need a word to rally around I think.
Having S for only 50 mins a week = possible S miss multiple lessons during Term. Flipp'n for me so far means they never miss out!
. I'm interested in data that suggests this improves learning do you have any?
A3: make sure their are questions that need answering and a discussion at start of the previous lesson.
A2 specific learning intention at beginning and end, direct teaching inbetween, I've only inflipped maths, hope to learn & grow
I agree, a lesson needs variation
I worry about going all in on flipped learning who is doing the work the T or the Ss?
Is it just me? My Twitter is playing up big time tonight!
Good point Steve, expands the "classroom."
Thanks for being so up front... can I ask for you to elaborate?
A3 by in-flipping - reduces equity / connectivity issues.
I teach primary and am in 1:1 collaborative space so would love ideas on how else to flip, what to flip etc
Q3 start in flipping then progress onwards.. senior Ss for me seem to get on with it and watch as they are more independent
Yes, eventually the strategy becomes so normal it is invisible. e.g. literacy wasn't always a given
A2: I'm also making videos for teachers, inspired by Tech Tip Tuesdays. Great way to access learning in own time
I rotate them. So I start with the group needing most help and the others view their clip then I switch
A3: Begin by making it worth watching. Make them simple enough that lack of connectivity means they can be watched in class if req
if the students are learning, then you are doing your job.
A3. If you didn't take notes, you didn't watch the video. Keep it super short so it's achievable. And give them time to watch it.
A1 agree is a useful method but like any ed strategy has its limitations
tks 4 sharing will watch l8r
Q3 I provide a weekly tech session for Ss in a lunchtime that have no tech at home & school has a Thursday after school h/class
good point Lisa, reduces the pressure on students in class too,
good point Lisa, reduces the pressure on students in class too,
A3. How will you ensure your kids listen to you in class!
with you can see statistics of viewing and answers from each S which is really handy.
I think it's because b4 I arrived this yr, they never even knew what FL was
depends... groups are differentiated & scaffolded differently, I like to encourage Qing & f2f discussion
that's how I started too! Great inspiration!
Ensure that what you have to say has immediate relevance.
Ensure that what you have to say has immediate relevance.
A3. There needs to be a simple deliverable for them. Like a particular set of notes, diagram or response that proves they watched
A2: Google forms for creating a WSQ style sheet for Ss to complete
offers a free way of Flipping the classroom and can see which Ss have answered questions etc...
A3. I think the homework concern is mostly brought up by those who haven't tried it yet. Your students will surprise you.
A2 Key concepts, learning provocations and challenges that stir up both intellectual curiosity and natural competitiveness
Or transferred from left brain to right brain through physical activity!
Q3 Ss in primary still require guidance, but once the routine is established they become in charge of viewing the videos.
I have your 1st one! Pls sign in Adelaide!
I would in flip to ensure that students are completing the requried learning
Great idea - Tech Tip Tuesdays!
A3: Google forms for creating a WSQ style sheet for Ss to complete
Exactly! Often mistake compliance for engagement!
Bonus A overhead 1 Ss tell help another & when thanked said 'yeah, I watched video twice, that's how I know' felt like a sml win
A3 Have some fun with it! If you don't make it a bit of fun and interesting to engage in - you won't build your audience
A3: Get Ss on board before you start flipping. Get parents on board too. Unless they really need to be doing HW, in-flip instead
better late than never! Michael from China A2 core concepts you wish to discuss face to face next lesson
Lots of great resources out there - no need to reinvent the wheel!
So I guess there are good ways to flip and bad ways to flip. Maybe make it STICKY - interesting/ engaging. Then it'll stick.
forgot 2 add - was asking how yr 1:1 Collaborative space works? :)
BQ get to some PL and join PLNs like this one
I'd emphasise this. It's a bigger worry in principle than in practice. Many sts really own their learning https://t.co/Ecm4oHhQax
A3. I think the homework concern is mostly brought up by those who haven't tried it yet. Your students will surprise you.
Agreed. Its a platform using which traditional/linear teaching needs to be amplified. Not replaced.
A3. Ss have an activity to complete while interacting with video/reading
Mine used to dob each other if they hadn't watched : )))
A3. By asking specific questions! That soon separates the watchers from the non-watchers! Send them away to watch if they didn't
I have seen disasters. You MUST get good training b4 you start
Bonus A: Curate first. Start slow, see if its something that works for you. Then create the content! & its not about the vids!
A3 the beauty of you can set a quiz to see they have paid attention
There are good & bad ways to do everything. Good & bad worksheets, good & bad textbooks, good & bad lectures
A3. Offer 'office hours' during school time for Ss who don't have access to connection outside of school
With any pedagogy - time and a place. Think about best practice. I personally love talking misconceptions https://t.co/eRVgMU9ZlD
I worry when I hear 'my classroom is all flipped'
Daniel Pink stylez, If they have an opportunity for mastery and you give them autonomy, that's motivation enough.
I'm loving how super easy Quicktime is for screen capture
A3: Make sure it is relevant & watching matters. Asking students to leave a comment as 'evidence' can help https://t.co/QXQW8a5MMG
Bonus A: Embrace mistakes. Ask your Ss for feedback and suggestions with how you run the class. Help them take ownership
Start small & make it purposeful. Don't do it for the sake of it; have a clear learning goal for your sts https://t.co/B6KB4DAG5b
I find most ”fully" Ts are pushing the boundaries-It becomes their identity as a T
Bonus Question Answer! Make learning real, connected relationship focused and emotionally stirring & engagement will be a issue!
I'd call what flipped is, as instruction, my interactions with students are mediating not instructing.
A3: My young gr. 1 students still require significant scaffolding when using tech...takes time.
And I don’t see this as a negative.
Snag-it and Jing are great free screen-casting for creating on videos.
Weekly quizzes that assess Ss understanding of flipped content
I'm yet to do the testimonials but I think they're a great idea - carry such weight
Does it effect the relationship with the teacher if it's too flipped?
when I was at school we watched videos/listened to CDs too, not sure why we need to rebrand this?
Yes! Where would you draw a line to separate these concepts? Can you distinguish exactly? https://t.co/8gnTF3rTb8
How is flipped learning different to blended learning? perhaps we've gone too far with buzz words?
Keen to here what East Tennessee superstar does with ... - you need to get her to Oz
You will be sending emails home to parents saying 20min per subject per night only! https://t.co/0CLKR8pf0L
Bonus Question Answer! Make learning real, connected relationship focused and emotionally stirring & engagement will be a issue!
interactive videos or just checking Their notes or entry pass.
that's a good one, try Google Forms and auto marking, works well too
Video lessons don't need to be a polished production. Keep it simple and authentic
Best piece of advice I've gotten was from Find your people
imbed in organisations VLE but this only shows Ss has accessed content not ‘really' engaged - but when in class Q&A
The TED videos for kids are great to use too!
For the HSC course we are shifting towards flipping the lower order verbs, while still having videos accessible for all dot points
you must have seen mine then
A3 I've seen ppl do short quizzes on it at the start of a lesson, I think there's a way to attach a quiz to a video
going to be 'entry' requirements... there will be a one page activity that will match with reading or or video
Back in primary I remember when we had "A/V learning" (that meant going to a room with a VHS player)
Basically, I think loading kids up with content is the antithesis of meaningful learning and development.
I often get Ss to produce their own videos to flip!
BQ: Realise that nobody knows how to do this Flipped learning thing. It's too new. There's a great freedom in that. embrace it.
Sure is... I know you can embed vids into
A3: give a pic like on a blackboard in school. Ss have to copy it in folder and write down some questions they have about it.
using is great for that too.
A2: You know those things that are the same year in year out and you get bored saying them? FLIP IT
Hi . Aimee from Melbourne, joining a bit late tonight!
There are as many approaches as teachers! I use an iPad hooked up to a mic in my room
Flipping's about bldg knowledge/ understanding. You're referring 2 higher order PS that comes after?
Simply not finding enough time to finish whole HSC content effectively - flipping is offering us a solution
. is your journey school wide or only your classes?
if done all the time, yes but you need to have context to truly be able to be creative with knowledge
It's good. Flipped lends its self nicely to PE.
We call them snappers. Sometimes stuff needs to be explained in kid speak!
A3: Also, if they don't watch the video but still figure out how to do the work does it really matter?
It's been around for quite a few years in various ways - like all good methods it evolves to meet needs.
it can be negative when this is the only approach a tchr uses all the time, esp in primary
this is something I need to come to terms with - as long as they can meet the basic syllabus requirement it's all good
Take a risk, have a go at it and learn as you go. That’s where I’m at.
Agree in some part. But Ss need some content in order to contextualize learning.
Its about gaining the necessary skills to retrieve content from
It started off just me. Now there's one other teacher flipping, and others considering taking the leap
If they can do it why re-teach it. We need students to work in their ZPD and challenge them at the right level
Flip lng builds a base. Then Ts & Ss can PS, analyse, explore togther
Seriously quizzes to see if Ss have watched the flipped video. We don't need more assessment we need engaged active learners
I'm not sure if it would be worth the time of setting it up though
some Ss will learn no matter what, the FL vid is like the replayable Tr, they may even have fun!
I personally LOVE the style of videos and I'm practicing cartooning to make my videos
Quite a few years is still not many. Not many teachers, if any, were educated in a flipped learning classroom.
If they figure it out by reading their textbook or talking to a friend, I'm all good with that!
Agreed - but quick video content snaps kids can access in own time, rewind, pause, can support learning
BA use your own voice personalise the videos
Whenever the teacher rolled that out in front of the room you knew you were in for a good time ;)
I flip nearly all of my content so class time is spent practicing and deepening-Class time too important for too much chalk&talk
A3: If it's working effectively & if students are engaged, won't they be self-motivated to watch the video?
Ten years ago provided supporting content online for HSC.. Was this flipping? Never gave it a name..
and Interactive, Gamification, Competitive, Engaging...
What do you mean by context? Isn't context cultural and historical, not content?
Just start with what you have! My first videos were all shot on my phone (& that was 4 years ago!)
& not overused as it losses impact if it's all the time
A4. you can't! Just like any kind of homework, not everyone is going to do it - Ts just need methods on how to deal
A4 videos available in mp4 format for those without internet at home can be played at school
A3 - Incorporate virtual excursions, interviews and demonstrations in FL so Ss can connect concepts to real world issues
Exactly. Some Ss might need the vid, others can move on to something at their level. Flip means you can differentiate
Would the whole school doing it be a problem? If every teacher assigned a 4 min vid for HWK, not bad.
it can where all communicating/collab is done online w no f2f discussion
Sorry for the late arrival getting the kids to bed & catching little rodents!
A3: Students will suprise you - when they can see the value in the video, they tend to watch them!
The content/skill we/they think they will need for their next learning?
yep, teaching and learning need variety
A3: provide a time in class pre-lesson for those who haven't watched/want to re-watch. For others use this as a masterclass time
A4 - in HSC year, Ss need to take responsibility for their learning... we are bringing in consequences such as catch up at lunch
There are quite a few flipped schools in the world. They are successful.
A4. Loan devices, school & local libraries are all options for supporting equity of access
A4 Technology and Internet access is so readily available nowadays. Provide opps for those without before or after school.
. This is why I would't film everything - Relevance should change from year to year.
peeps are there any whole schools that have flipped? Or are we just talking early adopters?
Have you observed many flipped classes?
Do it during school time. Create a classroom channel
A4: making sure that Ss have opportunity to access in class and not just at home.
Critical consideration to ensure access for all
My Ss have been using their videos from Prelim to study for their exams - hoping that this might be our 'in' for the HSC course
are Ss loaded if only mins of viewing & then class time that allows for inquiry, collaboration, problem solving etc.
Being a 'fan' is your choice but glad u all have access 2 abundant research support'g direct instruct'n https://t.co/rUebaOFowA
A1 Not sure this chat is for me. I'm not a fan of flipped learning. Instruction whether flipped or not, isn't a good way to learn.
amazing to see viewing rates increase a day before finals!
A4 can you ever? In-flip. watch them apply content
Depends on the age level, but even with my grade 12s I panic if I ever go over 6min. 3-4 is my ideal.
A4 Quick snappy entry tix, Google forms or post its
Add authentic and personalised to the mix and then try to sort & classify?! 🙆🏻 https://t.co/C1BmIvvECn
Yes! Where would you draw a line to separate these concepts? Can you distinguish exactly? https://t.co/8gnTF3rTb8
How is flipped learning different to blended learning? perhaps we've gone too far with buzz words?
that is what seems to have done here. Like a 'spark' idea prior to activities.
Most of my classes are in-flipped. Only seniors do HW, and they'd be doing HW regardless of flipping
Hi . Chris from Young, joining a bit late tonight! Bandwith in regional a real problem progressing this.
A4: Make videos available on as many devices/platforms as possible, I offer USBs of video files for those with no internet.
A4: As a one-to-one laptop school, not an issue for us. But using something like apple TV to stream videos? Show them in class.
I like Ss searching up vids when they have a Q or a problem. That is authentic. We adults do that.
exactly evidence is what should drive our practise not what we feel should
I tweeted on good faith, others engaged with me. Vygotsky proved 80 years ago direct instruction is deeply flawed.
Clearly not everything is best taught using vid. Inquiry, PBL, Mastery, Collab, etc
I'm working towards an easy to use technical set up like the pro's, namely yours!!
Blown away by the quality of my flipped Aung San Suu Kyi lesson using a suite of vids like this https://t.co/wUAsOsYdMD
Would be very interested to know the youngest age groups FL is being done with - I have kindergarten
Paging of Brighton Secondary.
Not to hand but I've seen before and after results data that shows a marked improvement
yeah agree find 4 min about right
When i go back into the classroom I would start with spelling and blend instruction
I also find them very watchable but they usually fit a lot into a small space.
A3. Keep account by making students try a task/ question/ strategy based on the video. Pause/ rewind if they don't show mastery
This was a quick video I made for my current Masters subject on my findings about the flipped classroom - https://t.co/gJHMr95LgQ
This was a quick video I made for my current Masters subject on my findings about the flipped classroom - https://t.co/g3ixxvOBcI
Awesome. I actually have 3 different setups. Document camera, wacom tablet, lightboard. Depends on the material.
A4: How does someone with no access to technology access the information?! That’s a tough question…limited access makes it harder.
? Is it hard 2 encourage rest of Ts 2 FL when yr class is flipped? Do u need 2 give backgd 2 parents on Flipped learning?
A4 provide access to wifi outside of classroom hours & use YouTube
Will see you guys in Adelaide
I like that concept. Just like when you watch a YouTube tutorial that is designed like that. Gives you a hook
A4: by providing opportunity in class as well. Rethink structure of your class day. Have flip, teach, mentor and reflect time
IMO it is not cool to play the experience card, but yes, I've been around, rather discuss facts though.
I love that they can save face and go back as many times as required to their point of need to master the concept
I have done morning classes in the past for exam prep... will be offering Thursday lunches this year
Classroom youtube channel- this sounds exciting! https://t.co/mu2ryfRcc6
Do it during school time. Create a classroom channel
A4. curate, curate & curate & share with the Ss where these are. This allow access at school & at home on any device.
I like the idea of a that could include watching/listening but also option to join the convo.
I agree. The teacher's voice still has a place.
There are no certain truths in lng- neuroscience shows all brains learn differently
Another reason not to be too polished - need to be prepared to re do!
After school in the library, the local library? It's a hard one
. That's a long time - recommend <5mins. Think about when U watch - is the 1st thing u check playtime?
Yes: best practice is to get buy-in from all stakeholders: Ss, Admin, Parents, Staff
Accountability is very helpful
unless youtube is blocked!
I think Jon shares some excellent examples & great practice, just want to clarify approaches
Careful with the "proof" there Richard. Science doesn't work that way.
A4 Ensure to provide opps to access content at school as well. I also post videos to class blog or to cover all bases
Yes, advisable if you are taking a very different path from the established norm. Many are grateful for innovation
A4 set out a clear task timeline and checklist so students are not overwhelmed by flipped method of teaching
As I said, I'm not a fan, this chat ain't for me.
A4 understand your Ss circs. Think about accessibility issues b4 setting the work outside of classroom
I try to keep my videos to less than 10 minutes now... important info is 'bold' so if Ss just get that down they have enough
. I personally like the interactivity that and offer - saves your time Kelly
interesting some metavideo with audio feedforward and feedback
Provide a range of things students can do not just watching videos
Also spelling tests, learning letters, simple math, All being done around globe
I guess it makes it more complicated when access is limited. Does it create a social divide? Haves/have nots
Q5- What do you think is the most important thing you can do in the group space for a successful flip? https://t.co/lg8ntNz9C7
Let's teach from the heart and not from the book.It leads to lifelong learning
Our goal is not to embarrass but to empower learning. Mastery often takes time.
Wondering why such -ve view if so. I use a constructivist tchng approach & flipped lng fit in really well
A2 is researching whether we should create or curate vids. any thoughts? I am a fan of creating as I know my classes
it's a catch-22... need extra time to set them up with interactive qs!
especially a chocolately smooth voices as yourselves
and isn't that limiting in itself? I think it shld be a strategy in the toolbox
Create is better than curate hands down.
can imagine some resistence from some Ts & Ps.
It's helpful to send a video email to parents telling them what it's all about. Get them on side.
I think allow student input to the flip. Show them and then allow them to use their knowledge to flip the learning.
A4: A combo of strategies that includes video (with subtitles) can cover lots of different learning needs
Sorry I can't stay around. So many distractions tonight. Loved stalking, will def reread to catch all the great tips & insights
So true! I found this when I started flipping my maths classes too! https://t.co/di6F5qqXIY
is not about the videos. It is about the active things you do in the class. It is about making class time active
. 10 mins would be my absoluate MAX and only with Stage 6
A5: utilise time wisely use it for collaboration, etc...
A5 make it relevant to the flipped content. Expect Ss to engage with the content, and apply it.
A5 group time = creating together
yep: Biggest hurdle to is change mindset of T
A5 practice and deepen knowledge and skills and then do cognitively complex tasks.
A5. Ensure that something meaningful replaces instruction time: collaboration, problem solving, peer review etc.
A5 esp in science get to discuss in more depth students views and ideas
I agree, flipped learning is about supporting the pedagogy
I'm for creating - students seem to enjoy seeing their own teacher too!
A5 I think I need to keep reading & learning more about not to mention more practising!
It works will for Teacher CPD as well as Ss.
A5. Encourage all creative ideas through redirective questioning!
Hopefully we use our cumulative experience for progress. Always good to critically debate
I just created a vid directed to parents to get buy-in The Flipped Class Primer for Parents https://t.co/PMe8E2vBIv
I found flipping allows us to explore more hands on stuff in Bio - things we wouldn't have had time for before
. I have been experimenting with my Surface Pro and the pen. It's working well so far
I'm thinking perhaps a wld suit secondary learning more than primary? Thoughts?
Maybe some feedforward for the T as well! An indication of where Ss are at b4 class time.
A5 Feedback feedback feedback. So much time to give so much feedback Let them do, then give feedback. Did i mention feedback.
A5: Make sure it's a space for inquiry-based learning so Ss can apply the content they 'watched'...T watches, listens, coaches.
A5: Collaborate! Have conversations with Ss, get them working with each other
a6 student expectations of what teaching is. A teacher in front lecturing rather than facilitating learning
A5: can provide personalised, just in time Teacher CPD
Also vids of you reading a book and then they take book home and you read to them.
A4 Adding videos and questions to Stile works well for me
A5: Students working on problem solving and maths in class, not just listening and watching teacher do it.
A5. Spend time getting to know Ss needs in deeper ways, their thoughts & feelings about their learning. Helps tailor it to them
Vygotsky 'fan' myself but base my pedagogy on more recent research-esp fine Aussie work on cognitive load https://t.co/oCVsigjPHD
I tweeted on good faith, others engaged with me. Vygotsky proved 80 years ago direct instruction is deeply flawed.
My feedback to you is that you need to leave more space in your tweet to say feedback.
Feedback is where it is at. Relationships and feedback. When we make mistakes we need feedback
We have one mobile glass board, and one purpose built. They both do a great job. We just tinker until it works.
and IT policy never got in the way of teaching or learning, ever!
Q6 my & more & more Ss biggest struggle is time restraints, deeper learning makes time fly
A5: Deeper relationships with students too - you get to talk to them and collaborate more.
Interesting..I think relationships, connections are an imp part of intercultural learning. Not easy to flip?
It will be getting the routine in place for the students. Once this takes place it will have huge benefits
give me a year to implement it properly and I'll let you know...
Top Reason why works, IMHO-Relationships. T knows S better
got any examples to share?
A5 clear expectations. Context and purpose. Feedback and clarification of ongoing learning.
so content is in a vacuum? just is and will always be?
A5 making the time & space for Ss formative internalization of content with a social back & forth component (peer instruction)
Agree I think we need a level of trust that they've watched it
That's the best part of flipped learning for me - more time with students
A5: do learning. It must be a student-led- process! https://t.co/lSxFU83fkg
A5: Collaborate! Have conversations with Ss, get them working with each other
A5 encourage feedback and reflection, self, peer and expert! Vital for S accountability in learning, conformation and success!
A6. Pretty simple: old habits die hard. Yrs of having the same movements, acts & rituals in your lesson sequence need to give way.
A6. Group dynamic can be problematic! Also differentiating skill level can be difficult as well! Le
I would think FL helps create time to deepen the connections and interc'l learning
A6 same as any teaching & learning - keeping up with those who really engage, and pushing those who don't.
A5: Extend, refine and enrich
I feel there are no limits in a flipped class. Not a canned fad, evolves everyday
I'm for making your own, but if something already exists that is really good, I'll use this too
Flipping also allowed me to help those Ss with other learning styles - we draw diagrams, we talk, we explore not just write
A6 - teachers understanding they are but only one circle of influence and that there are many circles of influence in a room
Luv watching them myself!
I think it looks different in sec/pri. I certainly use it but not for everything, depends on your learners needs
A5 I'm thinking group space also redefined to include parents, ripple effect of videos that allow access to education in the home
If you're a Google trainer you can get for free!
That goes to the heart of Hattie and building Student -Teacher relationships. Around .78 effect size
A5 agree I did this & my findings were published in 'Horizons’ mag Spring 16
A6: Getting used to what can feel like chaos. Ss aren't all doing the same thing at the same time
accessibility is vital! devices have a huge range of accessible options check out work!
There is plenty of recent research based on Vygotsky's Cultural Historical theory.
like anything innovative, there's people doing it well and people thinking they're doing if well
Yes, that differentiated learning thing again! FL is so good for DL
I've done some videos in the past that have taken far too long to edit, sounds like a great approach
haha a few parents only know me by voice until they see at school
Zeina, have you tried with 6yr olds? I'm missing it!
A6: There is going to be higher expectation on students to be engaged. It will be really obv. if they aren't in it. More at stake
A6. It's a bit of hit to the ego to lose your "stage". You'll recover though when you see all the learning happening.
good luck, sometimes IT policy is made out of fear and lack of understanding.. they are powerful forces in schools.
A6: Challenges...teacher mindset, teacher approach to learning facilitation, student commitment at home.
A5 Thx for this point as flipping really allows Ts to make agile choices accord'g to pedagogical purpose https://t.co/OK0BTJtmy7
A5: Make sure it's a space for inquiry-based learning so Ss can apply the content they 'watched'...T watches, listens, coaches.
A5: routine is essential -must be normal for Ss to fill the lesson with their questions, work & learning. https://t.co/jwbUwtOJhp
It will be getting the routine in place for the students. Once this takes place it will have huge benefits
I hope it is okay if I join the convo. Great rich discussion going on. Flipped Mastery Teacher Ohio
I think introducing parts of flipped learning wld be more encouraging than a
A6: Getting tech up and running and getting into a flow creating vids took time for me getting started. Now more organised!
a that's a shot! Damn this Hattie twitter drinking game I have devised!
So true. Our instruction needs to change and adapt with the times as well as the needs of our students https://t.co/KM7Ozns825
A6. Pretty simple: old habits die hard. Yrs of having the same movements, acts & rituals in your lesson sequence need to give way.
A6. Ensuring that it is not "just something else", it's aligned w/ & states the learning intent so Ss know where they are heading
I like the idea of a range of activities that Ss can choose during group time.
share with other Ts as well - no point continually reinventing the wheel!
Entry point for is to flip one lesson You don’t have to fully flip
So true, makes learning so much easier!
So true, makes learning so much easier!
yes - always need to look at trying new ways to do things!
But at the end: the flipped learning will be successful.
I create the videos for our Bio classes & the other Ts do other things
A6. It's hard to give up control. Without flipping, you have a grip on speed/content. Flipping puts sts in the driver's seat
I'd love any Ts to take my survey on the choice between creating & curating. Let me know if keen. https://t.co/uPb1i7Kt01
A2 is researching whether we should create or curate vids. any thoughts? I am a fan of creating as I know my classes
Agree ensure platform/s selected for uploading content are accessible for all Ss
we need to apply a growth mindset about change. We expect our kids to!
Content is only a tiny part & indistinguishable from the environment that actually produces development
I try to create this all the time! Gets easier over the years as you collect & collate resources in Edmodo.
it is an add on for powerpoint makes videos from powerpoint
wish I could come up with a great name for YouTube channel, love yours
yep! Used it in Kindy as part of my rotations in the lesson not as THE lesson, important to scaffold thinking skills
Feedback from my students is that this is what they love most - moving at their own pace
Cool I will have to check it out. Is it easy to use
I like the 2nd detailed comment on that video. Planning a response to it?
biggest challenge with any new implementation! :-)
Sure - coming to some of your workshops too! https://t.co/BrbFGuNJhv
Should be awesome! Fancy coffee on site in the am! BOOM
Teachers do love to talk!
so much more powerful for sts - I found sts focus and retention much better when they choose when to watch videos.
Jon could you please show us a great example of a flipped lesson
Flip a class, the another, then a unit. My students drove the
Yep, parents become big fans. They get to learn themselves, making them feel more capable of helping.
Have to hop off. Thank you and for this excellent hour of learning. Great
Awesome, have low expectations and that way I'll overachieve!
But content is what builds schema, &context helps to connect it
how do we convince those who say “I don’t have time” to take the chance and embrace something like this?
Q for what is your production & post prod time related to your final video length ?
Even though we flipped Yr 11, my goal is to make a 'refresher' video for parents before we begin the HSC course
all teachers need to look at how they can best use their F2F time.
I had a parent tell me they feel like they've met me before because they hear me in their home
It's not science I'm worried about, ideology is the real elephant in the room!
I like the record-pause-record style. Post production really turned me off my first attempt at flipping
A6 the possibilities are endless and energising-but also a bit scary. It is different to planning a lesson as u walk to class.
It all relationships isn't it. Fostering quality relationships is more important in the digital world now a days
was thinking having S read a book on one of the reading rotations. SS could answer Q on next rotation
thankfully twitter only allows 140 characters or we'd never get anywhere. blah blah blah.
. Not embarrassing - accountable. Teach them whether they like it or not in as many ways that we can! :P
I think we need to be mindful of how we label learning in our classrooms
Best way to promote is to flip well in your class
Make it natural, too much time spent on editing, making mistakes is like being in the class
the true "stage" is the glory in watching kids grow w/your guidance not memorizing your knowledge
you cannot learn in a vacuum. take experiment with ice vs dry ice. dry ice no content less investigation
A6 Ss aren't always 'digital natives' - risk taking and exploration through FL and collab. should be modelled and encouraged
Q what video hosting sites - internal v external do people use?
Which is why I'm in the wrong chat. I'm not interested in schema, rather qualitative development.
3:1 for me as I now am doing post production.
How to convince school to invest? You should start seeing Japanese videos popping up on clickview next term!
So wait, it's ideologically wrong to ever give direct instruction? How did U learn to tie your shoelaces?
I have sts of mine who beg other teachers to flip as they enjoy it so much!
agree - but so much research contradicts each other! Remember T observation is important.
Exactly: Ss are your best advocates
Ok, have a great night : )
you using that folding the t-shirt example again? ;)
If it is worth doing it's worth taking your time
I agree - I found the editing at the end of filming draining. I will change my approach https://t.co/qtXsChcXxw
Make it natural, too much time spent on editing, making mistakes is like being in the class
thats not too bad. manageable for short vids. Do you do a whole bunch at a time?
