A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Hi #PatinsIcam chatters. I am Kelli an ASD, SLD, Chrome Accessibility, AEM & AT Specialist with @PATINSPROJECT ready to communicate with limited behaviors of my own this evening.
Good Evening! Daniel’s here, just back from wrestling! Director of @PATINSPROJECT, former SpEd Teacher, Behavior Therapist, A.T. Coordinator, and Paraprofessional! So happy to be here to chat about Communication and Behavior!

Hi Everyone! I am Rachel Herron! I specialize in AEM, AT Apple Accessibility and Emotional Disabilities! I am pleased to be moderating for the PATINS Project chat tonight! #PatinsIcam
Good Evening All, Julie's here (Orthopedic Access to Curriculum and AAC, AT Team Development). Lover of lake living and of accessible technology. #PatinsIcam
A1: Do we ever see this in the DHH world!!! Earlier this week I had a S rip his CI headpiece off and chuck it at the wall - that's communication. #patinsicam
A1: If a child cannot verbally express their interest, needs, ideas, fears, hopes, frustrations, we will likely see those expressed in anyway they can. #PatinsIcam
A1: to me it means that what I see someone do (behavior) has meaning. It may not be intentional (flinching, reflexes, crying) but it's one body telling the outside world something. Keep your eyes and mind open for all communication #PatinsIcam
A1: I am a FIRM believer in this...just because some of it is unfavorable does not mean that it is not conveying a message...sometimes STRONG. #PatinsIcam
A1: It means that communication is NOT just verbal and everyone has different means of how they communicate #PatinsIcam Positively or what appears negatively.

A1- When a student has no way of communicating what they want to say, it comes out in behavior... "I.E. a thrown object could be...Im hungry"
#PatinsIcam

A2: I think I’d prob point a lot. I’d def exhibit some less than socially acceptable behaviors. I mean, I show some behav now when I don’t feel heard! I did use Proloquo on my phone once when going to the Dr w/out a voice. I’d rate that experience as, “I’m not dead.”
#PatinsIcam
A2... and I would WISH I could communicate with sign language, because that would be one robust way to connect! As a recent (my audio issue) meeting taught me, even without fluency, I could still understand the sign language user and it made me feel connected #PatinsIcam
A2 - by any means necessary and probably not very well most of the time... I'm tend to be an angry individual anyway and if I cant tell you that... wow it would be bad! 😡
#PatinsIcam
A3: A challenging behavior, to me, is anything that causes harm or destruction to self, others, or property. However, I think to many, is anything that interferes with the plans or control of the person “in charge” at the moment. #PatinsIcam
A2....so many signs we SHOULD all use in the included classroom...my Ss know a bunch! So much stronger a communication tool...love signing STOP...& beautiful girl when my Ss are heart broken w/teenage love! Also tree b/c I teach phylogeny ...bio ancestry 🤣 #PatinsIcam
A3: In the BLV world, a very common "challenging behavior" is rocking or poking the eye--it really makes sense though b/c without visuals to keep their minds occupied, their brains really crave input--it just looks wrong to the rest of us #PatinsIcam
A4: Antecedent Details, Behavior Details, Consequence Details! …and Consequence means RESULT, it does not imply a punishment! With enough details in the A, B, C, over time…the B can be altered by altering the A and or the C! #PatinsIcam
A3: Challenging behavior to me is anything that I don't immediately understand or need to work to understand. It is hard to see a student communicate in a way that doesn't clearly convey their message and struggle to help on my end. #PatinsIcam
A3: A challenging behavior is one that I am not able to "decode" and able to assist that student. That's why it is SO important for Ss to have access to different means of communicating #PatinsIcam
A3: challenging behaviors are not just negative, agressive, or inconvenient behaviors. might be a socially appropriate way only sometimes. A challenging behavior might hiding your head or a too-soft voice. In communication, it interferes with function of comm #PatinsIcam

A4: I'd want to isolate one behavior at a time to try and discern the reason for the behavior thru data tracking. Then I'd offer a more appropriate replacement behavior that would get the student the same result before moving on to the targeted result #PatinsIcam
A5: I think the best thing is to never give up as a T. It's like a puzzle. Keep trying the same thing multiple times, try multiple things. You never know when it'll click for the S or you as the T figures it out. #patinsicam
A5: Provide schedules (visual & text), Offer manipulatives, static communication symbols, choices for pointing or eye-gaze, and call Jessica and Julie! #PatinsIcam
Authentic relationships. No replacement for the work of building a true relationship, and students w/ challenging behaviors are the ones who need it most! #PatinsIcam
A5: Take a step back pause and do nothing...wait it out. Often our urgency is to fix what needs to be left out...let it roll. Maybe even on and use “planned ingnoring”... acknowledge we need a minute. Truly STOP, then go. #PatinsIcam
A5- Ss need options, choices, means to tell you the teacher...
Flashcards, Choiceboard, AAC, Buttons, Objects... basically whatever it takes to help a student have a voice and help them feel heard... then behaviors decrease.
#PatinsIcam
A4 the intensity of the behavior and frequency. Reflecting on today in my mind and failed to look at the behavior I saw and heard as communication, just wanted it to stop! Good to reflect and will try again tomorrow! #PatinsIcam
Let's not forget that often times it's the SILENT behavior of students who need support. We get engaged in the LOUD behaviors; but the silent ones should not be overlooked & also supported in a safe place to communicate. That is why relationship building is imperative #PatinsIcam
We all just want it to stop sometimes! Sometimes it takes being out of it a few minutes (hours, days) to truly see what is being conveyed! You are on it! #PatinsIcam
A7: let go of your agenda. Find what's meaningful and motivating to that student. Gather allies. Don't throw a ton of ideas at the wall hoping one will stick to the student without getting some guidance through something like an FBA #PatinsIcam
I have seriously talked about this all week...I worry more, sometimes, about students who do not overly express themselves. I don;t want to miss ANYTHING #PatinsIcam
A6: Don't forget to include the students loved ones in the conversation. Open lines of communication from school to home can make an extremely positive impact as well! #PatinsIcam
A8: Help ur Ss find the WHY of their behavior. Sometimes they don't even know. Take time for THAT. It's an important conversation #PatinsIcam Just ASK when not in the heat of crisis.
A8: remembering things they talk about and fitting them into conversations. Fulfilling requests- If a student has interest in something and wants me to check it out I will, and I will follow up. Follow up. always. being consistent- Love through structure #PatinsIcam
A8: I loved handwritten notes from teachers when I was a student, so I return that now to students in their media (print, symbol or braille). Also writing a note to someone that is screaming sometimes is a way just to deescalate #PatinsIcam

A8: honoring all communication. It can be hard for staff working w/ students with complex bodies. Tape interaction, review, watch for communicative behavior, catalog, share w/ staff, so they can all see the little ways they "say things" and work to build on it #PatinsIcam

A8: Remembering what they told you yesterday, the day before, last week, etc... and asking them about how it's going. This proves you truly do listen and care enough to ask #PatinsIcam
Yes! I think of how many times I've incorporated trains/dinosaurs/Paw Patrol/... into every single thing about a day because it's what motivates the S! #patinsicam

A9: Yes. Having HIGH EXPECTATIONS for all Ss can "unlock the mystery." Giving them ways to be INDEPENDENT in their communication AND their own learning. Game changer. #PatinsIcam
And then communicating with one another to ensure that everyone who works with the student understands that form of communication. Consistency is key! #PatinsIcam
A9: Each Ss is a new and “devine” case. Let the student lead, a lot, use tools that are comfortable and DO NOT force them to adopt our plan....set the course WITH them. #PatinsIcam
