#122edchat#culturize

Hello #122edchat
Melissa, 7th Grade Science T in NY. I can't think of my superpower right now because with 2 more days of school to go, I am running on fumes.
Hello all! I’m Tracy, Middle School Principal of @Simmonsknights1 near Chicago. My leadership superpower is knowing how to foster great teachers and finding the chocolate in the building. #122EdChat

Hey folks! Eric, Sped/Math teacher, working at an international school in Brazil. I just bought Culturize yesterday. I’m halfway through #BetheOne by @sheehyrw. It’s really good! I’ll have Culturize read by Friday. #122edchat
A2 “Usually a good place to learn and grow.” (Kids)
I think the culture in our building is good, but I think that it could be great! I am continuing to reflect on my role and opportunities to make it better! #122edchat
Q1 @casas_jimmy makes us wonder what kids would say about the culture of their school.
If you asked kids to describe the culture of THEIR/your school in 10 words or less what would it sound like?
Bonus if you add a gif to match their feelings. #122edchat
Good evening y’all. Elyse from North Texas and I teach special education in a behavior unit. My superpower would be Flexibility, positivity, and being all in! #122edchat
Hey #122edchat friends! So excited for an awesome evening together discussing #Culturize
Take a min and share your name, where you are from, your role in ed, and your leadership super power.
A1: I think most Ss would say they are happy with the culture! We are constantly celebrating successes, forming positive relationships, holding Ss to high expectations, & incorporating SEL activities. We just recently completed the MS kindness challenge too! #122edchat#Culturize
Hello #122edchat 😊Christine, teacher/curriculum team leader from Massachusetts 😊 organization and focusing on the positive are my leadership superpowers
Q1 @casas_jimmy makes us wonder what kids would say about the culture of their school.
If you asked kids to describe the culture of THEIR/your school in 10 words or less what would it sound like?
Bonus if you add a gif to match their feelings. #122edchat
Hoping that many schools are starting to swing this towards students saying that their schools are places of friendship, trust, and discovery! #122edchat#Culturize

A1: "This room is safe. Should we all bring in food tomorrow? Can I stay here during lunch?" 😕 sounds lovely but the subliminal message isn't. #122edchat#culturize
A1: Based off recent serveys students aren't to comfortable in our school right now, main reason for reading #culturize and learning from this great #PLN.The one positive is they fell that their teachers like them. #122edchat
A1 I am the new leader of the building but what I’ve been able to gather so far when I visited the campus they used words like: leader, 7 habits, safe, happy, fun, and place to learn #122edchat
A1 In my class: fun, loud, exciting, borning, techy. Depending on the student. Still no clue on a campus wide answer and im a little ashamed. #122edchat
That's exciting! It is nice to hear that students feel cared for and loved first and foremost. Hoping your new admin will continue that culture in your building! #122edchat
A1: I think it would be: Confused and disjointed. We have a very segmented school, without a lot class interactions. For their individual classes it would be much more positive #122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
A2 I have had a handful of times when my passion for students has gotten the best of me and I have had some less than professional conversations with Ts. I have not been proud of those interactions and have def reflected on what I could have done better! #122edchat
A1: This is something we worked really hard on this year. I’ve been trying to help teachers connect with their students more. I’m hoping they can’t WAIT to get to their classroom. Will continue to work on this next year too 🤓 #122edchat
Hey #122edchat ! Krista from VB. I’m currently the AP at Indian Lakes, but I’m headed to Brookwood where I’m hoping to use my relationship building superpower.
Thank you for your honesty and I am so sorry for the trauma your building has faced! Hoping that this chat and future conversations will help to lift your spirits and give you all support as you go into the next school year! #122edchat
A1: I honestly don’t know! - that needs to change! I can tell you what I’d want them to say or what they say about my class... because I asked them. But I’ve never asked any school wide questions. #122edchat
A2: Plenty of times where I sat by the water cooler during negative talk instead of changing the conversation and pointing out all the positives. Still some times I'm not perfect at this. #122edchat
A2: Same here. I was telling a colleague about that. When ppl do wrong by my Ss, it’s like they have wronged me. I’ve let my passion get the best of me as well. #122edchat
A2 I have had a handful of times when my passion for students has gotten the best of me and I have had some less than professional conversations with Ts. I have not been proud of those interactions and have def reflected on what I could have done better! #122edchat
A1 In my class: fun, loud, exciting, borning, techy. Depending on the student. Still no clue on a campus wide answer and im a little ashamed. #122edchat
A2 - I think in certain meetings I tend to get frustrated when people complain about kids and colleagues. Sometimes it’s best to just walk away, instead of stressing out over it. #122edchat
A2: I can remember a time when I joined in the gossip about an admin. that wasn't doing a great job. In hindsight, I should have put a positive spin on things and helped that spread!
#122edchat#Culturize
A1 I think in the larger picture across the US, many Ss would say that schools are a place where they are told what to do, and they have little control. Our classrooms are different because we make it different! push for change for all schools #culturize#122edchat
A2: @casas_jimmy stated "to affect change, we must be honest..." I could've done a better job largely celebrating small successes. It goes a long way for Ss. Also, more reaching out to the good quiet Ss.. I was one of them as a kid & always felt invisible. #122edchat#Culturize
A2-I cannot think of just one. I feel like there's a lot of misunderstanding my intentions and that has led to less than average culture. I'm very direct and that can contribute to a less than average culture as well. #122edchat
A2: Many times walking into @megan_hacholski's room. It's sad. I was usually worked up about something foolish. I focused way too much on people + mindsets that I could not change, instead of rejoicing over the wins we were experiencing. Now she's gone :/ #122edchat#Culturize
A2: As a RS, part of my role is to collaborate with Ts. I want to inspire Ts to take risks & be willing to view a time they failed as an opportunity to reflect & learn. I've allowed someone else's negativity to cause me to react in a negative manner. #122edchat#culturize
Sadly I agree! I think there are pockets in buildings in which Ss may answer differently maybe a specific classroom or grade level, but if we look at the school overall... I agree that most could use a #culturize overhaul! #122edchat
A2: There will always be that moment when we say something, do something, overlook something that we come to regret. While these times are disappointing, the important thing to focus on is how you work to fix it and learn from it. #culturize#122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
A1 "I have someone I can go to for help." This is what Ss reported resoundingly in our quality and perceptions survey, and you can tell that they have those relationships because even the challenging Ss tell Ts that they appreciate them. #122edchat
Q1 @casas_jimmy makes us wonder what kids would say about the culture of their school.
If you asked kids to describe the culture of THEIR/your school in 10 words or less what would it sound like?
Bonus if you add a gif to match their feelings. #122edchat
A2 uggghhhhh https://t.co/1wkjr8CGkn.FOOL. It happens almost never...but almost is not good enough for my students. I need to better. They deserve a teacher who is better. #122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
A1: If kids had to describe our school’s culture in 10 words are less, this is what those words would be:
1️⃣Fun
2️⃣Caring
3️⃣Crazy (in a good way)
4️⃣Supportive
♥️
5️⃣Has
6️⃣Teachers
7️⃣Who
8️⃣Love
9️⃣All
🔟Kids
♥️
@KirkElementary#122edchat#Culturize
I'm right there with you! Hate when I think of times where I settled for negativity. I cannot think of an iconic, transformative teacher in my life who was negative. Positivity is a tough choice to make, but it is always worth it! #122edchat@ERobbPrincipal
My classroom culture would be hard work and fun! School culture is indeed harder to pin down...but I bet we are getting too existential about it as well. #122edchat
A2 In the new school year want to keep Ss and Ts focused on gutsy goals and HOPE! We can and will accomplish what we set out to do@ #122edchat#culturize
A2: Wish I could have been more verbal in my opposition of terrible things I've heard in the hallway (e.g. kids saying "Make them go back to their countries!") but the fear of consequences was too severe. #122edchat#culturize
A2: I definitely have had times where I have said things and I wish I could go back and take the conversation back. On the “bad” days it’s so easy to get swept up in a not so positive culture. #122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
A2b - As a follow up, it is a fine balance to know when to interject and when to ignore the noise. We all want positivity in our class and school. Modeling it is the best way! #122edchat
A2: trying so hard not to accept the eye rolling, negative comments about students but still giving colleagues the support they need without criticizing!!! #122edchat
A2 it is easy at times to start being negative when things start to get off track. Instead of making negative excuses and comments I could be the one to get things back on track and remain positive. As long as the kids are benefitting it’s a win. #122edchat
A1- I hope they would say loving, caring and supportive but also a place that challenges and gives them choice. Think I need to ask that of my students next year #122edchat
A2: I had a colleague who did not see me as a partner or value my position in the building. One day we had a blowup in front of Ss. I would like to go back and fix that situation for the Ss sake. #122edchat
A2: Towards the end of the year I was stressed and projecting my stress into others. I am definitely working on being more proactive and taking time to relax and destress!#122edchat
True. I worked with a toxic group one year. I got so frustrated that I started eating lunch with the kids. They enjoyed it, and I got to my Ss better. #122edchat
A2 I can think of a lot of times in my early years especially where I’d give into arrogance, negativity or a toxic culture and briefly forget my why or that I wasn’t acting as a servant as I know and believe I am. #122edchat
A2: When I last served as an instructional coach, I became so laser-focused on the Ss' needs that I sometimes wasn't my best self with Ts who needed more time and patience. Ouch! Looking back, I feel so bad. #122edchat
A2 I wish I could go back and not show Disney movies like Mulan or Hercules and pretend they were aligned to our social studies curriculum. I was going along to get along instead of using my head. #KnowBetterDoBetter#122edchat
A2: The day a students made me realized that she believed in herself more than I believe in her!
SHE taught me how to express more often how much I believe in each student
#122EdChat
Right?! Same here. In hindsight I wish I would have paused & been brave enough to NOT engage - or even MORE courageous & encouraged the others to stop, too. #122edchat
A2: In hindsight, I always regret complaining or contributing to negative conversations. It is hard to stay positive when others are negative, but I strive to see and celebrate the positive. #122edchat#culturize
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
I used to think I was good at classroom management, because if I hollered at a student in the hall the negative behavior would stop. I've learned better... Like you still not perfect, but MUCH MUCH better than I was. #122edchat
A2: When Ts or staff members are talking ill about a student, I want to be better at defending them and setting boundaries that I’m not going to take part in those conversations. I want to make sure I (and my colleagues) remember they’re KIDS first and Ss second. #122edchat
A2: At times when I get frustrated because I don’t feel that teachers respect my subject area. I strive so hard to be part of everything in our school and I don’t handle it well at times when I feel that the role of Physical Education is minimized. #122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
Q3 On pg. 9, @casas_jimmy asks us to reflect upon our influence.
Share a time that your words or actions have inspired others.
What did you do to meet their needs or encourage their talents? #122edchat
I'm sorry that happened and hopefully next year you guys can start off on a fresh foot and come to a common ground! How could she not value a #champforkids like you? #122edchat
This one hits home... I often caught myself doing the same. I took me awhile to realize what it meant to truly embrace the positive and hold on to it. It's often still hard. #122edchat
Shelly Andrews from the beautiful Winchester, VA! I am a 3-yr AP, newly appointed to a leadership position at @sgross_jwhs 's James Wood High School- home of the Colonels! Leadership superpower: finding the humor--keeping it in perspective! #122edchat
Hey #122edchat friends! So excited for an awesome evening together discussing #Culturize
Take a min and share your name, where you are from, your role in ed, and your leadership super power.
A2) We all have those "I need to vent" moments. I think this year I may have vented to much and forgot to look at the positive in some of my low moments. #122edchat#culturize
A2: Running on empty can somtimes impact the way you carry yourself & lead. This is a disservice to all members of the school community. Got to remember the importance of self-care so you can always be at your best! #122edchat
OH MY GOODNESS! That's a scary lesson to learn from. I hope that you two were able to come to a common ground and build a safe working relationship. #122edchat
A3: It's hard for me to feel as though my words & actions ever have an impact on others....but I hope that I've left some sort of legacy with the #rsd122cares and #simmonslearns community! #122edchat
A3 My amazing friend @EALewis2016 recently gave me the most amazing compliment regarding the support and encouragment that I gave her to take risks and feel okay to fail forward! Meant the world to me.😍 #122edchat
That can be a hard role/subject to PR. I'm trying to get better at PRing my role too. I think the more people know we contribute to the campus, the more everyone can see the actions we do and respect the title/content beter. #122edchat
Thanks, however our working relationship just went down hill to the point that he didn't even speek to me. He got a job in a different school for next year. I have learned from the situation & won't let that happen again. #122edchat
I'm def going to ask Ss next year and take a pulse check at diff times of the year. Wondering if the culture shifts during diff times of the school year... #122edchat
A3: I believe in the impossible. I believe that anything can happen, if you work at it. I believe in our middle school kids. I take these crazy mindsets and try to get kids to buy-in and dream BIGGER than their current surroundings. #122edchat#Culturize
A3- One of my former students told me I inspired him to become a https://t.co/yLbxOI6Jqe of the greatest complements of my life. When he was my student, I just treated him with respect and allowed him to show his talents in class. #122edchat
A3: Best feeling is when Ss tell me I changed their negative viewpoint on math. I had many Ss this year say they never did well before or thought they could do it until my class. I always encourage Ss to take on challenges, strive to be their best, & never ever give up!#122edchat
A3: I am privileged to collaborate with Ts that inspire me each day. This year, I worked very closely with @nmgarzia & I couldn't be prouder of the educator she has become. When you show someone that you believe in them, you give them the power to succeed. #122edchat#culturize
A2 I would go back and set a different standard for our collaborative meetings. More collaboration, and I would work to ensure that I dedicated more time to growing the CLTs. #122edchat
Q2 We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building.
Reflect on a time that you wish you could go back and set a different standard. #122edchat
A3: I've taken a step back recently to co-present & support amazing colleagues like @MrPStrunk,
@DeemAlysia, & @JWCareerExp. I've also shown tools more than products, and guidance or giving answers.
#122edchat#Culturize
A3: I always try to inspire my Ss. But I would say this year topped it all with a S being surprised with free concert tickets from a company who saw a video she created. #proudteacher#122edchat
A2: We have all had that moment when we may have contributed to a less than average culture in our building—and although I preach positivity now—I know there has been a time when I got sucked into the negativity naysayers. It’s easy to do. Just smile and walk away! ♥️#122edchat
A2. We have a new school & are building a culture, there were many times when Ts were not as positive bc we had to go thru some difficult growth. If I went back, I’d make sure to be positive ALWAYs #culturize#122edchat
A3: for influence with Ss I see it when I run into former Ss and they are excited to see me and tell me all about what they are doing now. For Ts when I get to present at Conferences and share what I love and have Ts get inspired or tell me that they are trying it too #122edchat
A2 My team had a tough year with some tough kiddos and issues. Looking back, I wish I would’ve known to speak up earlier and not be on the struggle bus for so long. #Culturize#122EdChat
A3: I inspired an entire movement to get foreign transcripts from SIFE and ELLs to promote them to the correct grade. Started with one kid and grew exponentially. Pissed off a lot of staff members at the time but really helped the kids. #122edchat#culturize
A3a: On the last day of school, a student was distraught because he didn’t get the grade he felt he deserved. Come to find out he had blown up at the teacher (I think that may have affected his grade)... #122edchat
A3~ I work with an awesome asst @_mlb25 we have a mutual trusted, inspiring working relationship & she soars with the daily tips I share with her & I learn 3x as much from her 😊 #122edchat
A3: A fellow T just messaged me tonight thanking me for remaining positive during a bad situation. Her words meant a lot because I try so hard to remain positive and to spread the cheerfulness. #122edchat
A3) I encouraged fellow teachers to try and use flipgrid this year in their classrooms and helped when they needed tech help. I really got such a great response and support from fellow teachers when I created a school wide reading program this year, I appreciated that! #122edchat
A3 I had a student this year who had a really rough year the year before. He was seen as a little different and not the smartest due to some of his actions. This year he was a rockstar all year and I was able to prop him up as a class leader it was amazing #122edchat
#RealTalk There is a fine line between being a sounding board and letting someone safely vent, and engaging in/contributing to the negative culture. We can keep trying to turn the conversation in a positive direction though! #122edchat#culturize
A2: As a beginner teacher I think I focused too much on trying to make students conform rather than building relationships. I’ve worked hard the last few years to change that. #122edchat
A3: When I set aside time to listen to a colleague who was going through some personal challenges and it resulted in a deeper more collaborative relationship that ultimately helped our students #122edchat#culturize#collaboration#peersupport
A3: This is something I work on CONSTANTLY. Sometimes I see my role as support and serving teachers but forget they watch and listen to everything i output. I have to make sure I’m wearing my #BeTheModel and #championforkids on my face and w/ my actions. #122edchat
A3 I recently resigned and moved to a new district. I heard from several T’s how I inspired them to break down the barriers, push themselves and love teaching again. Our authentic relationships and creating opportunities and coaching them I believe caused this #122edchat
A2: I think it’s so important to remember that our nonverbal cues say just as much as our spoken words! Kids are watching! Other adults are watching! I want to make sure that I’m putting out positive energy, even when things might be tough! #122edchat
A3 I’ve been told my actions and willingness make me a great person. To me, it’s my way of being. To others, it’s something to hope they can do too. #Culturize#122EdChat
It is really hard to stay up with others are down. I have the best thing for me when I can't be positive or get a positive word in is to just leave the situation. I can control what I hear and how it effects me. #122edchat
A3: Best is when Ss tell me that I've changed the way they view math & now they are good at it. I always tell them I didn't make them good at it - just helped them figure out how they are the most successful. #122edchat
A3 - I spoke to our seniors and many teachers at our Night of Reflections. One point I made was never allowing anyone to say your not awesome. I hope it inspired kids and teachers to believe in who they are. #122edchat
A2) There was a time when a colleague asked the kids why do you listen to Mr. Griffin and not me? My students told me about it and it altered my perception of that colleague. I wish I would have talked to them about it. #122edchat
A3: I believe in the impossible. I believe that anything can happen, if you work at it. I believe in our middle school kids. I take these crazy mindsets and try to get kids to buy-in and dream BIGGER than their current surroundings. #122edchat#Culturize
A2b I'd also like to go back and stand up for myself during certain situations instead of preserving the status quo to keep the peace. I am in perpetual fear of getting written up for standing up. #122edchat
A3) It’s tough to say that I’ve had that kind of impact. I’m always sharing articles/podcasts with staff. Some have said they love it. I’d say one great thing was introducing a teacher to power of Google tools in class. She’s soared since Isherwood then #122edchat
A3: I remember a specific incident when I encouraged a child with a stuttering problem to welcome parents/guests to Jump Rope for ❤️using a microphone. She cried afterward and thanked me for helping her be brave and believe in herself. #122edchat
Q3 On pg. 9, @casas_jimmy asks us to reflect upon our influence.
Share a time that your words or actions have inspired others.
What did you do to meet their needs or encourage their talents? #122edchat
It was his first day and I wasn't as understanding as I should have been. But yes, we did learn a lot about each other. Plus, I learned about asking parents about cutting fingernails. #122edchat
OH MY GOODNESS! That's a scary lesson to learn from. I hope that you two were able to come to a common ground and build a safe working relationship. #122edchat
@CristinaDajero and I totally feel you on figuring out the best way to make collaboration count! We all want to get the most bang for our buck during this precious time and it can be difficult! #122edchat
A3: I love sharing my Immigrant story with my students and families. It’s important for them to know that language learning and being bilingual is an asses not a deficit
#Inspire💫
#122edchat
A3 I love collaborating with teachers! Remember working with @KristinBoyd20 on setting up a class Twitter Account @TheBig3Cubs and then watching her empower her students to use it during lessons and then creating social media interns #122edchat
Thank you for pointing out the subliminal message. It is humbling though that kids would want to spend that time with you. @khoggardGRT and I host lunch bunches ALL the time and are amazed by what the students share #122edchat
A3 I recently resigned and moved to a new district. I heard from several T’s how I inspired them to break down the barriers, push themselves and love teaching again. Our authentic relationships and creating opportunities and coaching them I believe caused this #122edchat
Q4 "No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
What does this mean to you as a leader in your classroom, building, or district? #122edchat
A3 each day brings a new set of challenges from your Ss. If you show them each day that you always believe in them even when they make mistakes that alone inspires them. I always tell my Ss when I make a mistake and how I’m going to improve next time. It’s contagious #122edchat
A3 Folks do come to me after I present at conferences, and participate in #EdCamps & even Twitter chats to thank me &/or ask for help. I give them my attention, help, ideas, & resources. An added benefit is that I learn from them too so it’s a win-win. #SharingIsCaring#122edchat
A3: I try to encourage kids daily. Just as someone told me very recently that I “was meant to do great things.” I now always use this phrase to encourage, motivate, and inspire my kiddos! #122edchat
A3. When others are feeling discouraged, angry, or defeated, just reminding them of why they are doing what they chose to do and for who! " The Children" #122edchat
A3b: I took the time to help him reflect on the power of his words. I shared my own foibles. We concluded by making a pact to be better versions of ourselves next year. He told me, “You are really inspiring. No wonder Ss like you.” ☺️ #122edchat
A3: I share what I am reading & encourage others to read as well. Lots of books have been read by Ts In my school as a result. I love that they find books with a topic of interest, read them & share out with Ts! #122edchat 📚📚📚
A3: I had a couple of Ss this year say that I inspired them to be better. All I did was love on them and showed them that I cared and told them I believed in them. Words have huge impact! #122edchat#culturize
A3) Sometimes you will never know how much your influence was felt. Three years after I became a Principal I ran across one of my former colleagues and they said they knew I was going to be a Principal because I always found and shared the positive in ALL situations. #122edchat
That can be a hard role/subject to PR. I'm trying to get better at PRing my role too. I think the more people know we contribute to the campus, the more everyone can see the actions we do and respect the title/content beter. #122edchat
A4: While collaboration with others is vital to the success of an educational community, we are only able to control our own thoughts and actions - we set the tone for those around us! #122edchat
“No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you” @casas_jimmy#122edchat#champforkids
A3: I try to encourage kids daily. Just as someone told me very recently that I “was meant to do great things.” I now always use this phrase to encourage, motivate, and inspire my kiddos! #122edchat
A2-I taught for 13 years. Then war interrupted my life for a while. When I returned from overseas I went into admin. I had a few moments of being less than compassionate. Staff and students don’t forget even if they forgive #122edchat
A3: we had a really rough yr. During RAoK week I put notes, and little trinkets on every Ts car for them to see @ the end of the day. Through the week when looking in their cars I still saw the notes and some even posted to social media. I know it helped in some way. #122edchat
A3 one of my Ts was down because the team dynamic was off--they took it personally. I made sure to include them in a growth and leadership opportunity with our PBIS team, and they are now a mentee in an admin program. Building capacity is key! #122edchat
Q3 On pg. 9, @casas_jimmy asks us to reflect upon our influence.
Share a time that your words or actions have inspired others.
What did you do to meet their needs or encourage their talents? #122edchat
A3: One of the end of the year letters that I received from a S this year made me realize that although at times I feel like the worst teacher in the world, I know I did something right. #122edchat#Culturize
A4: Do NOT allow someone to bring you down. You're responsible for how you react to situations, so make decisions that will impact you in a positive manner. You can't spread happiness & positivity if you're NOT those things yourself. #122edchat#culturize
A4- I am in charge of myself. I have to be responsible for my successes as well as my failures. I have the power to make or break my day. Do not give other people the power to dictate your feelings. You have to create your own buy in even if others around you do not!! #122edchat
A4: MY attitude and contributions are directly responsible for the condition of the classroom, school, and community culture. This is a VERY sobering thought. Easy to blame someone else when things go wrong, but now I cannot. I AM 100% responsible. #122edchat#Culturize
A4: It means you get to choose how you approach each day, each Ss, each situation. Will you let it get you down? Will you fight through it? You can fixate on the negative or positive, its up to you. #122edchat
A3b I’m all in for students. From arrival to lunch duty to dismissal, I try to be positive and upbeat for them. It matters. Every interaction, every day! #Culturize#122edchat
A3: I love sharing about my #globalcollaboration journey! I tell about the various ways my class has connected with others around the 🌎! It makes me happy to see other Ts join in & find excitement in getting connected! #122edchat
A3) During our first doctoral cohort team building field trip, I rode next to Maria, and as an #ELL, non native English speaker, she did not believe she could handle the program. Man those two hours flew by as I was able to learn about her many accomplishments. #122edchat
A2: I have a hard time meeting adults where they are. I just want them to be the best they can be. This is why I am not an admin. I can with the ss... and when negativity starts, I try to change it but quickly retreat to my happy place. #122edchat
A4b: Closely tied to this is belief. You must believe to the point that others trust it implicit. This with positivity makes a truly amazing school culture!
#122edchat#culturize
A3: I've had the opportunity to encourage several teachers to share their strengths and skills by presenting at our district tech conference #EmpowerED this year. It is nice to be a cheerleader for teachers who are doing great things! #122edchat#culturize
A3b Simple things > former students come back to visit or email even though it's been years and they're hundreds of miles away...they are upset and want advice, they've "come out" and want to share the good news, just want to say hi... I love them unconditionally. #122edchat
A4: This is a tough thing to teach to littles but it is so important. Character speaks volumes!! We spend the whole year talking about being accountable for our character and actions. This is a never ending learning process. #122edchat#culturize
A4 it definitely makes me think long and hard about the mindset I need to start each day with. If I can model this mindset of positivity and openness I hope my students can follow my lead or even expand upon it #122edchat
Q4 "No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
What does this mean to you as a leader in your classroom, building, or district? #122edchat
As a new member of #122edchat I challenge you to talk to them when the school year starts! :) That is, if you're still working with them. That's my area of growth at my current assignment - just do it. Also inspired by @ToddWhitaker who shares w/ us we have to teach others.
#122edchat Sticking up for myself and for others is something I need to work on. Mediocrity in terms of culture often becomes the norm because of what we allow.
#122edchat A3 I felt like I broke through a wall when a first grade teacher told me that she was skeptical of a simple management strategy that fostered student choice, but it actually worked. 1st grade is a tough group so it was a huge win!
A3 On my end of year feedback sheet, many Ss write that they love science now or they didn't know science could be so cool. I consider that a win for the future scientific community. I could be inspiring the person who cures cancer! #122edchat#culturize
A4: “No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
As I say in my blog, I have the POWER to CHOOSE how I want to lead others. I choose to lead in a positive, uplifting way. #122edchat#Culturize
A4: I have learned to be more mindful of my failures but more importantly my triumphs. We constantly are taking time to check in with our Ss I have tried to do the same with myself and others in the building! #122edchat
A3c: I commonly look for ways to build Ss up. It could be offering sincere praise or encouraging Ss to give back to their community. Our words have power, so I want to use them to edify not tear down. #122edchat
Learning to meet Ts where they are was one of my biggest take aways from my 1st yr in a coaching role! I realized that everyone is coming from a diff place &that it was my job to take the two steps forward to meet them and earn their trust in order to bring them along #122edchat
A3) When my former students tell me that the lessons I taught them stuck with them throughout high school and beyond means the world 🌍 to me. We are teachers of kids not just content. #Life lessons matter. #122edchat
A3 I had a difficult student and I kept trying different ways to build a relationship with him. He also had no interest in learning, I had another idea I ran by our principal, their response was go for it, I'm glad you're still trying with this student. #122edchat
A4: Each of us has a choice to make each day! I choose to start mine with a smile, hello, & “have a good day!” to every single person I pass in the hallway. Smiling is contagious! Spreading sunshine one grin at a time - that’s morale! #loveworks#122edchat
Q4 "No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
What does this mean to you as a leader in your classroom, building, or district? #122edchat
A4) It means that no one has the right to dull my sparkle and I shouldnt let anyone get in the way of taking risks in my room. If it works for me and my ss that is all that matters. If I fail then I learned something, if I succeed I lean something too! #122edchat
A3. One of my newcomers grew 50 points on a very challenging state assessment, her growth mindset was incredible & I invested a lot of time working with her & developing both Spanish (her 1st language) & English #culturize#122edchat
A4 you are in charge of your attitude and enthusiasm each day. Your Ss will feed off of your attitude and energy. Be the role model and set the tone and example of how you want your students to be #122edchat
A4: It means I am responsible for my own mistakes, but I am also able to take pride in my successes unapologetically. I prefer to give credit where credit is due - but people tend to agree only when crediting others for one's successes. #122edchat#culturize
A3: last year I started a classroom Makerspace. This year @khoggardGRT and I presented to our school on how to incorporate standards of learning into a Makerspace. I had several teachers tell me that it inspired them to take a risk and try it. #122edchat
A4: I get to choose my weather everyday. Even when there is a thunderstorm in the building, I can choose sunshine. I can choose to be proactive or reactive. #122edchat
A4) It means that no one has the right to dull my sparkle and I shouldnt let anyone get in the way of taking risks in my room. If it works for me and my ss that is all that matters. If I fail then I learned something, if I succeed I lean something too! #122edchat
A3: I get the good fortune of getting to help teachers and students on their “rough” days. Many times those people come back and tell me that my advice worked or that our talk helped. It’s great to know the power we have to help others. #122edchat#culturize
Q5 Call to Action!
Before we dig into the four core principles of positive school culture over the next few weeks...
Take a moment to identify an area of average that you would like to change and not just manage.
What will be your first steps? #122edchat
A4 If I don’t do any of these things I’d be quite the hypocrite expecting or desiring those I serve/lead to do the same. All of this is part of why I believe I am a Lead Learner and not just the “principal”. My success and my teams is on me. #122EdChat#culturize
A4. You are the only one responsible for your attitude, positivity, and what goes on in your life with successes and failures. Your attitude has a lot to do with how you deal with situations in life, both good and bad. Stay positive! #122edchat
Hi All! I’m a former instructional tech coach and eled teacher turned Director of Innovation @myclassform current super power is bringing teachers together to collaborate @TeacherCircle! I ❤️ staying connected with my like minded teacher rockstars #122edchat
A4: When you care a lot about Ss and you lose some battles, it’s easy to give up. That’s when we have to remind ourselves of our why. We don’t do this job because it is easy. We do it because we care. #122edchat
A4: It’s a reminder that I am the one in control of me and how I respond to situations! I determine my outlook & the tone I set for others!! I have to take ownership of ME & make sure I’m setting a positive example! I get back what I put our! #122edchat
Your global story has been so inspiring for me! I have already started looking at how I can tie global/cultural connections into Junior Great Books bc the stories are so rich with culture! Thanks for the inspiration I may reach out to pick your brain! #122edchat
A4 We, as educators, have the power to choose our actions, our responses, intentions, and how we want ourselves perceived. Choose joy and uplift daily! #122edchat
A5: I'm hoping to work on demonstrating more confidence around colleagues. I know that I have a lot to offer but need to work on always believing it! #122edchat
Very true! We must own that WE have an impact, regardless of our position, title, or how many students we see a day. We make a difference to the culture every day. #122edchat
A4: I always tell my Ss that they are responsible for their actions no matter how they feel. I try to guide my behavior w/ that philosophy too. It's so easy to play the blame game, but you're only hurting yourself. #122edchat#Culturize
A4 At the end of the day we all have to live with the choices we make. No one can MAKE you do something you don't want to do. Sometimes we just need to take the easy way out. Trailblazing can be hard! #culturize#122edchat
#A3 this year I let Ts choose their PD. I really emphasized out of the box ideas. We did a genius hour and launched a weather balloon on to Canada. Ts and Ss loved it. I told them nothing was too big #122edchat
A4: I believe this means that nothing will change unless I choose to do something. In my class if I don’t want to change anything, it won’t happen. I can’t be part of changing the culture in my school unless I take action. #122edchat#culturize
Collaborating with teachers is one of my favorite things to do! You both learn so much through the process and it often brings you closer together. #122edchat
In reply to
@KateAshmore, @KristinBoyd20, @TheBig3Cubs
A4: I feel like this is an important concept for adults to understand, but also vital for students! You are in control of how you perceive and define your story each and every day! #122edchat
A5: Constant positivity! I would like to get out in the hallways and around the schools more throughout the day talking, interacting, and truly listening to all members of my learning community.
#122edchat#Culturize
A5: Attitude. I was cut to the heart when I read page 6. Too often I find myself contributing to the negativity rather than finding the positives in structures, in kids, in decisions. I need to be stronger, rise above and strive for excellence in all I do. #122edchat#Culturize
A5-I can work on being more positive in general. I'm going to try to not automatically jump to conclusions and try to see the best in situations. #122edchat
A5: The dreaded difficult conversations. Ss & Ts deserve to hear the truth & to know that someone wants the best for them, it has nothing to do with personal judgement. I can no longer avoid or save these conversations for another day, the time is right now. #122edchat#culturize
Exactly! I may not be flying first class down to Disney on Sunday, but I am hopeful that I can give each of my students a first class education! #122edchat
A3:I presented at a workshop about how I run stations in my classroom! I was terrified, but I did it! I don’t necessarily think I was convincing enough though… I don’t feel like I am a very influential leader…Perhaps it’s because I run around in a tutu. #122edchat#culturize
A4: last year I decided that I wasn’t going to worry about what others thought about me. I was going to do what I believed was best for me and my students and support anyone that wanted to join me for the ride! #122edchat
A4 - It is all about bringing your best each day. There will always be those who don’t share your passion, enthusiasm and live of teaching. We determine how our kids will learn and prosper in class. #122edchat
"Thank you so much to ___ for playing a tremendous role in this achievement!" is fine but "I'd like to give a special shout out to ___ for contributing to the failure of this project" isn't. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ #122edchat#culturize
A4: I have control of my own emotions and thinking. I have really been working on keeping the negative away from me and working to keep myself and my Ss really positive. #122edchat
A5: My CALL OF ACTION: ☎️
If you are complaining, you better be explaining...explaining a solution to whatever you’re complaining about! 💥 #122edchat#Culturize
A4 It's about mindset. We have to respect our own agency and work to keep our thoughts positive. If you find yourself in a bad situation, do something to help remedy it rather than wallowing. #122edchat
Me too! My mother is from Spain and my father is from Mexico and so when I tell my students about this, many are shocked. I show them to be proud of who they are and where they're from #122edchat
A4 Mulling it over: there are things I can't get passed (pretty sure it’s not all my doing). However, I am indeed in control of me > I shouldn't get in my own way (as my admin once wisely advised me). Same w/ kids: Control what you can, make the best of it, Go for it! #122edchat
Q4 "No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
What does this mean to you as a leader in your classroom, building, or district? #122edchat
A5 #122edchat We will no longer be average in Stating, enforcing and reinforcing High Expectations! First steps in making this happen...continue to review work by @EricJensenBrain and continue reading #Culturize
A4: I choose to be happy. I choose to make it work in my classroom, regardless of what is going on around me. I do have control over the important things and accept the things I cannot. #Culturize#122edchat
A4: Every day my actions and words have the power to help or hurt. I need to go into every interaction with students, staff and parents remembering that. #122EdChat#Culturize
Oh man I’ll you have something to offer! I would LOVE to be in a position where we can collaborate! You’ve never displayed yourself to me as anything other than capable and a certifiable edu rockstar. #122edchat
A5: Everything that's not amazing is average or less, and it all needs to change. But these needs evolve over time - something that's average for one group of kids is amazing for another, and vice versa. First step: ASK THE KIDS. #122edchat#culturize
A5: I am trying to communicate more with staff I typically don’t interact with. Teaching mulitiple grade levels makes it difficult to connect with everyone. Expanding my PLN and getting myself out there more is my first step. #122edchat
Thank you all for joining us tonight! Continue to share your reflections, #booksnaps, questions, and ideas over the next week and be sure to check out @Holtclass next week as she moderates #culturize Chap. 2! #122edchat
We hope you enjoyed tonight's chat. Thank you for joining us. Don't forget to expand your PLN & follow the amazing educators here tonight.
Tune in next Wednesday at 7 Central (8 EST) as @Holtclass takes the lead for Chapter 2 of #culturize with #122edchat!
A4) I agree that we own our own morale as we have to choose how to be happy and respond.
I am thinking/reflecting 🤔🤔🤔more about the success aspect. I am not sure it is always that clear cut. I guess I would have to understand how are we defining success🤔🤔🤔 #122edchat
A5 I’m gonna say genuine confidence. I am not a very self confident guy and I tend to push the spotlight away from me. As someone new to the school/district/City I need to be visible and comfortable and comfident in my skin and in my leadership #122EdChat#culturize
A5) For me it is being confident when other teachers are choosing to be negative and focusing more on the positive in my room! Reflect on the positive at the end of every day before I leave! #122edchat
A4 I am the barometer. I need to set the tone in my class. Which means I have to let go of my stress and outside concerns when I’m in the classroom. #122edchat
A5: As an instructional specialist, I am vowing to raise my average level of supporting teachers to awesome in order to make a greater impact on every student every day. By doing, not just saying, I am going to help Ts make sure they reach their Ss each day. #122edchat
I don't have #Culturize yet but it is the next @dbc_inc book I want to buy/read and join in on the #122edchat Although I wouldn't be opposed to winning it as a free book in the #DBCChallenge weekly contest ;) I will submit a few entries before the week ends #TLAP
A5: The place I desire to change average is helping students learn to manage appropriate social and emotional skills. I am using this summer to read and learn so that I can better help my students.#122edchat
Q5 Call to Action!
Before we dig into the four core principles of positive school culture over the next few weeks...
Take a moment to identify an area of average that you would like to change and not just manage.
What will be your first steps? #122edchat
A5: A common thread of frustration I experienced and hear from my pals all the time was the struggle of colleague critic. I feel we often judge before we inquire to put ourselves in each others shoes. Teacher to teacher, teacher to parent, teacher to student, etc! #122edchat
A5 An area of average I’d change is the tradition of giving packets of worksheets to kids as classwork/ homework. Mind you it’s what’s on the paper that counts (or on hyperdocs for that matter), but we need to be more intentional re: what we create & assign to students #122edchat
Q4 "No one person is responsible for determining your success or failure but you, and no one is responsible for your morale but you."
What does this mean to you as a leader in your classroom, building, or district? #122edchat
A4-the sun is always shining in my world and I look like Elvis...I try to always be upbeat and positive at school. I believe it is my duty to make others shine so if it takes a quick bible verse or quote to inspire me so what. I use this to inspireI fake it sometimes. #122edchat
This is a great goal! As a previous classroom T in a huge school I had to set a goal to get to know the Ts on the other side of the building and reach out to them to collaborate or have our Ss collaborate. It can seem daunting but joining the #122edchat PLN is a start!
A5: I am very much an introvert and although I am always willing to share my thoughts and ideas, I know that I need to live less on my island. #122edchat#culturize
#A5 No longer settling for average communication with parents families- we can always challenge ourselves to further involve families in our classroom community! #122edchat#culturize
Yes girl! This is me all the way! I always want to squeeze so much more into the day than is even possible. At one point this year my principal said to me you must stop and eat bc I know you haven't taken your lunch in weeks! Hahaha time management,I need some work #122edchat
A4: I fully believe we are responsible for our own morale and happiness. If I'm not happy then I must determine the reason and be willing to make a change. I have to evaluate what small or large change I can make that will improve things.
#122edchat#culturize
A5: I feel like this year I was pretty average with how I taught math. We are getting a new Math Coach this year and I can’t wait to collaborate and make math amazing for my Ss this year! #122edchat#culturize
A4 We talk about growth in our class. Some of my Ss really struggled this year, but I loved showing them how much they had grown. We recorded ourselves reading all year and they listened to their Oct. recordings They could actually see/hear their own growth. #122edchat
#A5 No longer settling for average communication with parents families- we can always challenge ourselves to further involve families in our classroom community! #122edchat#culturize
A5: We make a lot of decisions for kids. We need to take time to stop and ask them what they think. Their voices need to be heard! Currently reading... #LetStudentsSpeak#122edchat
A2: I have a couple of those times that come to mind. One thing I’m very contentious of is that I make sure that I apologize no matter what happens and no matter how comfortable it is. 😞I want people to know I value our relationship. #122edchat
A3: I had a student that generally had a hard time getting through each day. I kept encouraging this student to always communicate his/her needs to me so I can help. Communication, trust, and relationship with students are so important! #122edchat
A4: I loved this quote! It means not to let the negativity of others affect you or your decisions. Be who you want to be and do your best regardless of how others feel about it. #122edchat
Yes more brains are always better. Just remember that each of you has very different Ss so be sure to allow for autonomy amongst classrooms! As a team ensure that each person feels comfortable making the changes that their Ss need! #122edchat
A5: An area of average I want to change is in regard to student expectations. I want to be a stronger advocate for having high expectations for students and pushing teachers to BELIEVE their students can reach those expectations because THEY CAN! #122edchat#culturize
Q5 Call to Action!
Before we dig into the four core principles of positive school culture over the next few weeks...
Take a moment to identify an area of average that you would like to change and not just manage.
What will be your first steps? #122edchat
Thank you for advocating for students, EVERY single student needs to know that they have at least one person who believes in and supports them. #122edchat
This is very brave. So few Ts are willing to really challenge themselves to incorporate more family and community involvement, but it is a powerful untapped resource! #122edchat
I am so excited for our coaching squad to grow with another innovator who is a #champforkids and teachers! Our room is going to be busting at the seams with Ts and ideas!! #122edchat
#122edchat a2 I'm terrible at translating songs. My ss did Pokemon song and 3000 views later I should have had more faith in their talent and grit. We do do better together @skymazef3
Yes it does, yet in the long run we are better off for not engaging. I have left the lounge on many occations based of what I was hearing. I need to keep my energy focused on the positive. We all need to tell our story, but work for positive. #122edchat
In reply to
@ChristineBemis2, @CristinaDajero, @sknighttech
That is a great goal, and I have some to realize that MOST parents want to be involved. They just don't always know how. I also think we need to differentiate and offer different ways for parents to be involved - not everyone can participate in the same way. #122edchat#culturize
Thank you for advocating for students, EVERY single student needs to know that they have at least one person who believes in and supports them. #122edchat
A-5 I really want my Ts to take more risks and push the envelope. I am going to give them the challenge to teach a lesson that is out of the box. I will support them no matter what but I want to be there when the teach it...Twitter opportunity #122edchat
I need to be strong enough to say "This isn't the time or place to talk about this. Let's talk after school." It is hard and I hope a situation like that doesn't come up again. #122edchat
A5: My call is action for my school is to be open to change! Just because “we’ve always done things that way” doesn’t mean another way won’t be better or more effective. #122edchat
Making time to collaborate with colleagues is extremely beneficial for all involved. It allows time to listen, clear up misconceptions, & deepen understanding. #122edchat
You have to check out a blog post I wrote called the Aaron Carter Effect... It will make you laugh! It is about "the way we always did it" #122edchathttps://t.co/cQweMJBUNS
#122EdChat a3 You know yr brain lights up when you tick yr work but not when teacher does. Getting ss to self compliment and confirming are my best words @skymazef3
Check out my amazing friend @EALewis2016 who had her 2nd grs teach the entire China unit! They covered it beautifully and the engagement and empowerment levels were out of this world! #champforkids#122edchat
A5: I need to imporve allowing, supporting, and encouraging my little to make goals for themselves. I work with their parents to create goals for their IEP, but they also need to be responsible for their learning. #122edchat
Oh the teachers lounge... in some buildings it is a place of sadness! However, what I will say is that you have the power to turn it around by being your positive and energetic self any time that you step into that room! #122edchat

#122EdChat a4 Patching up my morale this year. When things go beyond the beyond, you've gotta decide is the tide high or low for you and take action. @Skymazef3
I agree. We set up unrealistic expectations and the set our self up for failure. I’m going to focus on 3 goals a day and prioritize! #122edchat#Culturize
Thanks, I am working on finding my voice in person. I have a difficult time when F2F. While I find writing a task that I dont' really care for either talking this way with all you wonderful people it is so easy. It must be all the + vibe going on that gets me going. #122edchat
In reply to
@khoggardGRT, @ChristineBemis2, @CristinaDajero, @sknighttech
High expectations are one of my major pushes as a #champforkids it is a soapbox that I do not take lightly for sure! It will move your Ss and your teaching to new levels, and it will also asist in the building of meaningful relationships #122edchat
I hear you, it's hard not to take things personally. I try to remind myself that I may not know everything that the other person is going through at the moment. #122edchat
