The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Ok #miched folks. Happy Wednesday. Our chat tonight is on tech integration frameworks and models. I'm Craig, from Holland, moderating tonight. Please introduce your self, and see the question doc to prep your brain: https://t.co/LGZgchIrOl
Hey #miched! I am a 4th grade student teacher in the Grand Rapids area and I'm looking for some ideas on integrating technology. In our classroom, we are studying US Geography, multiplication, food webs, and persuasive writing. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Hi everyone! I’m Meagan from Grand Rapids and I’m a 9th grade US history teacher assistant from Grand Valley! I’m excited to learn and talk about ways to integrate technology into my classroom! #miched
Ok #miched Q1: There’s a variety of tech integration models designed to guide the use of tech in #edu, including TPACK, SAMR, Triple E, Tech Integration Matrix (TIM), ISTE Standards for Educators & others. Choose one & summarize it in a Tweet.
Q1: Triple E. Well rounded and easy to understand. 9 Questions to help educators determine if the tech they're using supports their learning goals. #MichEd
A1) I'm a big fan of Triple E. It's practical and research based. It gives 3 questions in 3 areas (engage, enhance, extend) that can help teachers plan or evaluate effective tech use in a lesson. #miched
A1: TPACK - incorporate technology with other facets of instruction when it makes sense to do so and build mastery in the overlap of all areas. #miched

A1) I just have been getting into #4shifts from @mcleod too. It provides practical questions for deeper learning, student agency, authentic audience and tech infusion (to support the first three shifts). It's like Triple E + #miched
Ok. Moving on #Miched. Q2: Which model or framework is being used in your school or district and how is it being used? If none, what seems to be the most promising option(s)?
I have done some work with teachers using the Tech Integration Matrix - placing current lessons on the matrix and then exploring options for enhancement. It was ok, but the end goal is always so fuzzy. #miched
A1) I'm the instr. tech coordinator & Triple E informs a lot of what I do. I can't say it's been adopted formally by anyone else yet, but I'm working on it! I led PD on it recently and give this Triple E + G Suite session at several conferences: https://t.co/lZmFs0uFkP#miched

My school isn’t using any one method, but a classmate explained TPACK to me as trying to make sure content, tech, & pedagogy all overlap. I think that would be useful for my school. We have PD every Friday, so we could easily work together to implement this. #michED#EDT370
I've worked with educators on SAMR, TIM and Triple E. I think SAMR can be a good start but if not interpreted correctly, it often leaves teachers with a feeling that they're not doing enough if they're lesson is not at Redefinition level. #miched
Q2: The most promising model/system for technology integration for me is TPACK. It focuses on balance, regardless of tool; something we always need to focus on. #Miched
My favorite part of Triple E is when you add up the values and she has a rubric to interpret it. And it is always clear that the tech doesn't get the focus, the learning target does. #miched
Q2: I have been using a MITECS survey for teachers to ID what they are currently doing. We are now in the process of prioritizing next steps. It is going well so far. Not a framework, but it serves as a guide. #miched
I really like the MITECS/ISTE Standards, but I'm having a difficult time getting admin and teacher buy-in. It's like a nice thought, but way down on the list of requirements. That's almost always been the case with the tech standards though. #miched
Hello! Nikki Anderson here from GVSU (currently teacher assisting at ICHS). I am really enjoying reading through these threads, and look forward to doing so in the future as well! #michED
I'm starting to think that's the main thing--reflection. I almost don't care what the tool is as long as teachers are intentional about why they used it and they reflect on if it worked. #miched
Q3: What are strategies that schools can use to implement a tech integration model into their systems (regardless of which one you use or prefer) #miched
I have the same thought. It is very empowering for the educator to be able to have that reflection piece and look to see what they can try to improve for the future. #Miched
Q3: Starting with the end goal in mind is helpful. I've talked with @danieltmares about how he helps teachers get to where they want to be one step at a time. #michED

While the school I am at doesn’t articulate it’s technology plan specially, technology follows the TPACK structure. Students are using technology to foster deeper learnings and examine multiple perspectives (with modern topics in social studies) #edt 370 #miched
A3: I like to suggest to Ts to keep a physical copy of the Triple E Framework in your lesson-design space. I reiterate that it's more about the lens at which you look at tech use in your lessons than it is about completing the rubric. #miched
I just created a survey with 5 questions for teachers to do after I support them in a new learning activity. I'll use the feedback, but I really designed it just to get them reflecting. I'm still testing and tweaking it, but it's been the best thing I started lately. #miched
A3: Looking for some good ideas here. Since Tchs are all over the place with integrating tech, how can we move everyone forward? Can’t all start on the same level, some are super far, some aren’t. #miched
A3) I have a few slides I use at staff meetings and classrooms that raises the question of what tools are for in general. Then we discuss what digital tools can be best used for in school. I make the point it's not just to save time and make things easier! #miched
I think of what we know of good instruction. If there is not a target, then where the heck are we going? Seems like identifying the goal and then providing resources around it is necessary. ISTE standards for educators? #miched
A3) For our student teachers, we have them fill out a TripleE rubric, their mentor fill one out, and the supervising instructor complete one, then compare...as a coaching tool and guide. #MichEd
Good points @mpetty39@techsavvyed . Your lesson planning should always start with what you want students to learn, not what technology you're excited to integrate. Sometimes it's so tempting to try the bright and shiny! #miched
A3) Also, start with the administrators. They have to understand the end goal and believe in it first or success will only be in small pockets at best. #miched
A3) When districts take a systematic approach and use the Rapid Cycle Evaluation Coach by Mathematica in addition to framework to ask critical questions and do fairly easy pilot studies with tools. It's not perfect, but it allows Ts to focus on learning goals. #miched
Good stuff #miched. Q5: Tech integration often results in very different things happening in different classrooms. Should it be more collaborative or is it ok to have teachers doing things separately? How might it be better?
Sorry. Q4. Got ahead of myself there. Tech integration often results in very different things happening in different classrooms. Should it be more collaborative or is it ok to have teachers doing things separately? How might it be better? #miched
Q5) I'm happy with different things happening as long as everyone is moving forward. We had this happening at our HS a few years ago and it gave us lots of ideas to share between classes. #miched

@michEDchat
Hello, my name is Erin and I'm currently teacher assisting in Byron Center for music education K-12. I'm hoping to find interesting ways to incorporate technology in a secondary music classroom. #miched
A4: I think we need to find a balance between honoring individual strengths and moving the bar forward. It's important that those who are doing great things share and support those around them in manageable ways. Can we have a high floor and a high ceiling? #miched
Yeah, I see that point of view. The hard part for me is the system perspective. If everyone is doing different things, how can dialogue about common practice and co-creation happen? How do we support teachers that change roles or start new? There is strength in numbers. #miched
A4: I think both are ok and of value. Everyone is at a different spot in their own growth and learning. Also, I have seen first hand that Ts collaborating and visiting one another’s classes brings rich discussion and new ideas! #miched
We can, but we can only push so much! So wish we had a tech coach that kept sending out reminders, new ideas, modeling cool pieces, setting up co-workers that are working on the same goal, etc. #miched
Yeah, the observing and sharing of new ideas is great, and we have to allow space for innovation. I too often see the "rock stars" progressing while the non-rock stars remain stagnant. There's a strong psychological element at play. #miched
Yes. Having someone in that role is really important for moving the bar forward. I used to send out weekly "Good Things" a few pictures and few sentences highlighting the different things I witnessed in classrooms as a coach. Like to think it moved the floor a little. #MichEd
Excellent discussion tonight everyone! There's so much here to think about, I'm going to go through it again tomorrow. Thanks for the discussion! #miched
Last question. Q5: Schools have many options for how they allocate time and money. What reasoning or evidence suggests it’s valuable to devote resources to tech integration models or coaching of them? #miched
