We tend to assess them differently and provide a modified program if the school was aware of the extended holiday. Less sympathetic if we are not informed
Early in my career I learned not to give work before a student goes on vacation. Sometimes it was prepared, other times it wasn't, & then there was me doing work on top of the current week's work to have it prepared. Now it is consistent #bfc530

I absolutely agree, Laura. When families take holidays outside of scheduled times, this should not add to the already heavy workload of teachers. When they make this choice, we cannot own the potential ‘aftermath’. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530! When Ss tell us in advance Ts give some work to complete before they leave & the rest they make up when they come back. For most Ss it works out. But a few really fall behind in understanding.
Our Ministry of Ed requires that we provide an academic program for Ss who travel for extended periods of time during the school year. We should receive written notice from the parent & then we arrange work w/ each T. Google classroom makes this much easier for Ss & Ts! #BFC530
I remember leaving school for a week in 3rd grade & my Mom asked for work. I got a such a thick packet, my Mom apologized every night in FL I had to work on HW for an hour, but she didnt want to be rude asking for work & not completing it #bfc530
#bfc530 Ss with extended holidays need to work with administration as well as Ts to get clearance and a make-up protocol. It becomes the responsibility of parents, guardians, and Ss to synchronize learning or step out of the term.
Google classroom definitely helps! The biggest problem we face is that since we don't use textbooks, when Ss miss mini-lessons, they often fall behind. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 ! Good QOTD for my first day of vacay! If Ss give me notice I will do mix of some extra prep work + check GClassroom. If it’s world history class they miss, and they are traveling outside US, I give them “research” assignment and they have to report when back
Morning everyone ! Been up enjoying these loud thunder storms for a while. I head to my new district for PD this morning and I'm super excited!! #bfc530
For that reason, Carla, I have always questioned the value of sending work with students (on vacation), as it is not able to be supported with all-important instruction. #bfc530
Summer vacay is when I say “yes” to my kids after 10 months of “I’m too busy”—yesterday after last day of school I played badminton, got a Sharpie tattoo, and drove a visiting child 40 mins back to their home #bfc530
Since I use Google Classroom I just tell my students to check what they're missing if they can, but they can always make it up on every they get back. #bfc530
I had a Google site and it had daily lesson plans and activities that they could access I told them what I thought we would be doing and they were able to keep up or make up after returning #bfc530

Good for your Mom! That is my worst pet peeve! I tailor the assignment to the Ss situation, often they just want work for the car ride or plane—so it’s more about communicating what they will miss and have to make up rather than giving all of the work. #bfc530
This is not uncommon in my school b/c we have several families who travel back to their home countries during the year for long periods. We have a policy to provide work & we do so; we also emphasize the risk of missing so much time. Can’t always be helped, though (1/2) #BFC530
I fully believe that family time is priority. Vacations are so expensive and time so crunched that it’s tough to stick within actual vacations. As long as people are nice about it, there’s no reason to not support them. #bfc530
To me, it’s impt that we help families feel supported & understood, while also emphasizing the value of being in school. We treat each case individually & do our best to serve them as best we can. We encourage Ts to be creative & flexible w/out increasing workload. (2/2)#BFC530
Personal policy: check google classroom. I live in southern IL where we take snow days. There will be a day when snow days no longer exist bc of technology. #bfc530
Good morning! Still in school here in Ottawa. Last day for students, second last day for educators. Busier by the minute🤪 Whoever says things slow down at the end of the year has likely not worked in education😁 Happy Thursday! #bfc530
It depends on the holiday..Usually I ask Ss (elementary) to do a few things: Read & talk to their parents about it. Keep a “journal” of experiences w/ a focus on “noticing & wondering”. Work on a few Math Qs to keep brains stretched like those on Youcubed & Eyes on Math #bfc530
Good morning! My policy, which might disagree with district policy, is to let them make up missed work. I teach 7 yr olds so they didn’t schedule a cruise, their parent/guardian did. Ps need breaks too & have jobs so I’m not punishing the S. I send them w/a book to read #bfc530
