Hello I'm Emily a pre-service teacher from Revere Mass, studying Math in Lesley University! I'm excited to be here and learn about the different ways to be inclusive #ellchat
A1 Good evening #ELLCHAT I’m Karen Nemeth, co-host of this chat and an author/consultant focusing on ELLs/DLLs in #earlyed I’m from PA, fondly remembering speaking at previous #IowaCLC18 events!
A1. Hi #ellchat! I’m Leighann. I teach elementary ESL in New Jersey. Just leaving parent teacher conferences, so I’m going to try and follow the posts as best I can!
If you want a great professional learning idea, watch tonight while people join together at the Iowa Culture and Language Conference #IOWACLC2018 in person to chat and participate in tonight’s #ELLCHAT
A1 hey everyone! Welcome to all the preservice teachers joining tonight!! I’m Valentina, consultant and PD Specialist for teachers who serve ELLs. I’m tweeting from Tx #ellchat
What makes #ELLCHAT a success is that we post a question (Q1) then everyone posts answers identified by (A1) so later people can understand who is answering what - and don’t forget to type #ELLCHAT
A2: Definitely allow students to feel welcomed, this is with any student. Once they become familiar and comfortable it'll be much easier to adapt. Also learn from them, there's no better way than to showing interest to their personal lives and how they were raised. #ellchat
A2 This is a big question for #preK ! Not only do they start in a program that doesn’t speak their language, but it may be their 1st time away from home! Tchrs MUST prepare to welcome each w/ home language! #ELLchat
A2) Treat students how they want to be treated, not how we want to treat them, recognizing their cultural and linguistic diversity as an asset to our classrooms. Celebrate them and their unique journeys! #IowaCLC18#ELLChat#wdmcsESOL
A2 a warm smile goes a long way, learning their name, learning a few words in their language, providing them with a same language buddy (if possible )can help a new ELL feel comfortable #ellchat
A2) Seat your ELL at a table with students that speak their home language. Assign a buddy to them. Create a schedule with visuals. Have a set of rituals and routines you follow every day. Provide books in L1. #ELLchat
#ELLCHAT#IowaCLC18 A2: Get a large world map & push pins w lil pics of Ss heads.Put string on where they are from and their journey to their new state in the US. All Ss do it not just #ELL ! Ss will Cthe incredible journeys off their new friends & it will #sparkempathy & wonder!
A2 Preview some of the places and faces they'll see in and around the school and community--use real photos and video that you take to pre-teach and talk about different settings they experience #ELLCHAT#IowaCLC18
A2) One thing we do with new admits is go on a walk of the Building and identify important places and people. We take photos and make a little book. #ELLchat
A2) I beleve creating community and a safe space for ELL Ss is important since this gives them a sense of belonging woth is important to many of these students comming in to a new environment and become overwhelmed with the new adjusments. #ellchat
What makes #ELLCHAT a success is that we post a question (Q1) then everyone posts answers identified by (A1) so later people can understand who is answering what - and don’t forget to type the hashtag!
A2: Help #ELLs adjust by showing genuine interest in their cultures/languages and personal likes. Allow them to use their L1 and be open to learning some words/phrases here and there! #ELLCHAT

A2 I’ve heard so many #earlyed tchrs talk about what they did in December to support their ELLs/DLLs - breaks my heart they didn’t realize they needed to do that BEFORE the first day!! #ELLCHAT First impressions = lasting impressions!
A2 Take photos of the school (vocabulary, places, people) for newcomers to use in student-created books about the school--great for sharing with the next new arrivals! #IowaCLC18#ELLChat
I believe: my mantra for all : B.E.L.I.E.V.E.! be the educators who lead to inspire and empower via English! Or Empathy or Excellence! Or #ELL It’s all if you B.E.L.I.E.V.E.! :-) #ELLChat
💫What do you believe?✨
I'm excited about my keynote tomorrow at #IowaCLC18! We are all going to walk away remembering why we got into this profession! SO MUCH IS POSSIBLE!
Subscribe to https://t.co/P1KsNzrXT9 so you will get all the resources I'm using. #ellchat#Ellchat_BkClub
A2) One year I took my newcomers on a series of "field trips." We learned "office vocab," then went to the office & chatted with the secretaries, who showed them behind-the-scenes. Same thing with "cafeteria," "library," etc. Fun way to get to know the school & staff! #ELLchat
A2 when you have new ELLs, be sure to let librarians, nurses, Art, Music, and PE teachers know about them. Give them as much info as possibleto Support the new student #ellchat
Share an video that is created of our school introducing many of the faces that will become familiar to them, these are translated into our most popular languages #ellchat
A2)Social experiences that make students feel comfortable can help them feel apart of the school. In the beginning of the year, I like to do a silly photo booth and kids love it! #ELLChat
I teach adult #ELLs in Canada so my context is a little different, but creating a safe space and building community in the classroom is an essential prerequisite to successful learning for the students in my classes. #ELLCHAT
A2 Universal Design for Learning is a proactive approach helping tchrs prepare for children from different languages and backgrounds - so I wrote this book w/ @pambrillantehttps://t.co/0eXSJxhBG5#ELLCHAT

A2 Safe space - a critical concept that is often seen as insignificant. What could be more important from the very first day? Safe is critical to inclusive for ANY age, don’t you think? #ELLCHAT

Whether it is a classroom or a work environment, creating a safe space where an individual feels like their voices are heard and valued is the first step to building an inclusive community and a lasting relationship! #ELLchat

A2) One of my mentees went into the regular classroom and had students create an All About US Book to introduce themselves to the newcomer in their classroom. The book is all pictures, and they will add to it all year as new students come. #ELLchat
A2 Respecting and honoring their L1 and culture is a big first step. Warmth, mentorship, and a good buddy program is positive as well. And don’t forget to bring in the parents! #ellchat
Absolutely! Many of the students in my classes are refugees and, if they have been to school in their home country, they may have not felt safe there. #ELLchat
A3) I would always strive to surround my students with culturally relevant text. Baskets full of books on every table. I wanted my ELLs to see and hear themselves in books. I created book bags to send home that had our most popular read alouds in English and Spanish. #ELLchat
A3 I love when tchrs get to know their student’s interests then using that to create bulletin boards. Not impersonal ‘flags around the world’ or posters from catalogs. Try fave sport teams, pictures of children doing fun things w/ family, covers of fave music CDs #ELLCHAT
A3: You can establish an inclusive environment by supporting #ELLs bilingualism through literature and discussion. This in turn will promote a bicultural identity. #ELLCHAT
A4 Don’t you think this is where we have to go beyond token home language supports like “hello in 20 languages” posters? How are we ALL learning each other’s languages? #ELLCHAT
A4) I don't think that we should tell Ss that they can't speak their home language in school. That is not a good message to put out there and doesn't show respect for linguistic diversity. #ellchat
A4 It’s so meaningful build in time for students to discuss and write in their native tongue. Also cvaluable to explore linguistic connections within content vocabulary - a great opportunity for ELLs to see their L1 in the content! #ellchat
A4) value students answering questions in their L1. Even if it means a partner has to interpret. Encourage code switching if it means students readily express ideas. Build upon all of the connections they make to content...even when they are connecting to SpongeBob. #ELLCHAT
A4) I don't think that we should tell Ss that they can't speak their home language in school. That is not a good message to put out there and doesn't show respect for linguistic diversity. #ellchat
A4) Have ELLs bring in a family treasure from home. This can be an artifact, photo, or story about their culture. Have them show to classmates and share in either home language or English. #ellchat
A4 Books in English and home languages: Some of our favorites are Esperanza Rising & Esperanza Renace...and House on Mango Street & La Casa en Mango Street #ELLChat#IowaCLC18
A4 Love this video of children teaching a teacher how to say words in their home language! Power! by Teaching at the Beginning https://t.co/yMLf5Hw1IX#ELLCHAT
Q5 Heterogeneousity! Helpful especially in cultivating social language. Also: Roles! What unique contributions can ELLs make to enhance the learning of their peers? #ellchat
A5: You can create groupings that support language development where students are paired with students who support them but act as a language model. #ELLchat
A5 To support purposeful groups that work independently, tchr first has to take some control to set up group members AND instruct all on how to collaborate across language barriers w/ respect #ELLCHAT
A3) Giving mixed background classes a chance to teach words or phrases from their home language can be a nice activity. I recently learned some Mam in class and it was great! #ELLChat

A3 Thinking about inclusivity in classroom dynamics, I often think back to Penny Ur’s comments on arranging games/game-like activities (pic) from “100 Teaching Tips” #ELLChat
A5: Is it beneficial to switch up groupings depending on the activity? Sometimes have same L1 groups, sometimes have similar domain level groups (regardless of L1), sometimes varying domain level groupings, etc. #ELLCHAT
A4 Hey! Sorry I missed this! We - and the US Department of Education - want to use strength-based approach to teaching ELLs - we see their additional languages as assets, not a problem to be fixed. So, how to make that apparent in school? #ELLCHAT
A5: Is it beneficial to switch up groupings depending on the activity? Sometimes have same L1 groups, sometimes have similar domain level groups (regardless of L1), sometimes varying domain level groupings, etc. #ELLCHAT
A5 - Also - is important to watch how groups work and make changes as needed. As children progress at different rates, their needs change. And sometimes it’s like setting up a blind date - people you are sure will be great together don’t work out! #ELLCHAT
@MsSalvac Was it you who posted the padlet activities this morning? I think that's a great resource to get students talking to each other and collaborating. #ellchat
A5) My last class as a classroom teacher was entirely made up of ELLs. Depending on my goals, I would group by overall language proficiency, content proficiency, interests, gender, or domain proficiency. #ellchat

A6 Oh yes. I have some great answers to this question! Download the Google Translate Mobile App to your phone or tablet - not the website but the actual app. You can use the camera of your device over English print and see it in the translated form. Try it NOW! #ELLCHAT

A6: Flipgrid, Padlet, Kahoot, Quizlit Live, Google Docs, Twitter for High School, See Saw, Skype using @empatico and being an empatico classroom. Letting Ss have access to tech. I’m HUGE in giving HS Ss freedom touse their phones: seratonin maker!! #ELLChat#IowaCLC
With English learners who come to us reading in their native language, we aren’t teaching them HOW to read again. They already know the mechanics of learning to decode and read. We are transferring that knowledge to the target language. #ellchat#langchat#teachertips

A6 Nearpod is interactive tool that lets students participate at their own speed and allows them to represent their understanding in different ways #ELLchat
A6 AND some apps that allow students to create stories together and type/draw/ import photos AND record their voices in any language Draw and Tell by Duck Duck Moose is one, My Story by Bright Bot is another #ELLCHAT
