Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Katherine tuning in tonight. Started Catholic Schools Week today at Christ the King in Wichita, Ks in third grade! I love teaching social studies more because I grew up learning a lot about history, so I enjoy it more. We did start fossils today in science though! #ksedchat
Hi all! Joining in tonight cause I can't pass up a social studies topic! I'm Jill Weber and I teach 7-8 SS & HS Teaching & Training CTE pathway. Been a busy month trying to get ready for maternity leave and baby # 4! One month to go! #ksedchat
Denise Gash 5th at Derby Hills in Derby. I love to teach Social Studies because I love to make a subject that most think is boring come alive to my student! #ksedchat
Courtney Keller - 7th Grade Math Teacher - Lawrence, KS - USD 497. I have taught one year 7th Grade Science and one year 7th Grade Math so I naturally lean towards science but I am intrigued by the rich/real world conversations going on in the social studies classroom #ksedchat
Kyla, 2nd grade @ NL. I love science! For me as a Ss, it was so hands-on and engaging. It also sparked imagination so that’s why I love it in teaching! #ksedchat
Kyla, 2nd grade @ Neodesha. I love science! For me as a Ss, it was so hands-on and engaging. It also sparked imagination so that’s why I love it in teaching! #ksedchat
Science is easily integrated into a force and motion lesson with Sheep in a Jeep. My cooperating teacher and I did this and it was great! The kids loved it!#ksedchat
A1: Integration is where it's at! Did it in my classroom now sharing through @go2Science. Every lessons shows you how to integrate though ELA, Math, Service Learning, and the Arts! #ksedchat Some of my old projects are here: https://t.co/rK6qbtbiIs
A1. With science, I see an integration of both fairly easily. Researching, documenting, reporting for reading. Results and reporting can involve math too. #ksedchat
A1: There are many fiction and non fiction books out there that you can tie in with life cycles! I do plants, incubate and hatch eggs, watch caterpillars build cocoons and hatch into butterflies, and frogs! I love it! #ksedchat
A1 I often wonder if it is easier to integrate in elem when one teacher covers all and can plan? We have 2 science, 2 math and 2 reading Ts per grade level with no common plan time. #ksedchat
A1: there are tons of awesome things you can read about science! @Newsela has great articles. Math is easy to integrate, lots of calculations you can do tied into experiments #KSEDchat
A1: no experience teaching science, but I LOVE to see the science experiments my 1st grade daughter comes home with. Great conversations about trying different ideas, growth mindset, and what it means to have success! #ksedchat
A1: @mysterydoug@go2Science@studiesweekly and the evolving PBL! These are all great ways to integrate! The kids are very engaged and like the delivery and voice and choice in the PBL process. #ksedchat
My daughter LOVES @mysterydoug and asks to watch the YouTube videos at home. Her little sister has her favorites already and she's not even in school yet! #ksedchat

A2: I love to "use" my ELA colleagues to help me here. I piggyback off of what they teach. Consistency for kids, and I get help I am area I'm not trained in teaching. #ksedchat
I really wonder about the rigidity of the content standards. They don’t prevent cross-curricular learning, but there are elements that surround them that can make it difficult. I think we give a fair amount up when we don’t connect content areas. #ksedchat
A2: When I was student teaching integrating social studies and reading was super easy. Now, in a Catholic school we have to have social studies and science time. The standards can be integrated, but doing a social studies lesson for reading isn't as easily done. #ksedchat
A2 Social Studies is much easier to integrate with ELA. Researching, writing, and projects is just a few ways. For math, chronological events with dates can be an integration! #ksedchat
A2: My K Ss integrated all three through their project focused on food security. Gardening, social good, reading, film making, and more! https://t.co/YL0oHVfKPY#ksedchat
Again ss can read &write with books about anything. You can teach any reading standard with science or social studie books. We just completed a Kansas animal research project, next black history with a 1st grade class #ksedchat
A2b: for example my 7th graders will be creating haiku poems based off of primary sources they find on Cowboys & Cattle Drives. I use ELA terms for my rubeic. She teaches poetry I get to come in with similar wording in my expectations. Makes for awesome results #ksedchat
Rob Glenn, Salina, KS; A2: When dealing with distance and distance formula, we review line of longitude/latitude, and I have a project on planning a vacation the SS teach and I collab on for a final.
#ksedchat A2 I am concerned we don’t teach our students how to integrate their life. My life outside of school is 45 minutes of math, then 45 minutes of tech and so on.
I really wonder about the rigidity of the content standards. They don’t prevent cross-curricular learning, but there are elements that surround them that can make it difficult. I think we give a fair amount up when we don’t connect content areas. #ksedchat
A1. Science and Social Studies readers leads to research and questioning and writing about our findings and excitement! I cannot wait to do Kansas Day presentations tomorrow! Come by room 105 at 2pm if you want to see my kids presenting research, see what they write! #ksedchat
A3 For 5th grade the best part is watching them taking ownership for their learning while doing projects and applying skills they have learned to them! #ksedchat
A3: Integrating across disciplines means learning is relevant, connected, and purposeful no matter what age the student. It's also efficient! More bang for your buck so to speak. We often forget, however, that even kinders can do this AND rock it! #ksedchat
A3: We need to show students that life interacts. That mountain range you’re studying in geography impacts weather you’re studying in science. #ksedchat
A2. IMO this requires more planning and intentionality but not impossible. There are great story books with math in them! I love the book The Doorbell Rang! #ksedchat

A3) Real life doesn’t present itself with issues separated by content area. It’s a messy business, life, and the interwoven fluency of all topics is key to navigating it more than almost anything else. #ksedchat
A2:Reading about famous Americans (like Martin Luther King, Jr. last week). There's a book called "The Doorbell Rang" tat talks about how to divide up the cookies when friends keep showing up. (Math) It's tougher with the littles. #ksedchat
I was thinking efficient as well, I can fit it all in and still have time to play in kinder if we integrate it all, plays it's more fun and ❤️ when they are amazed with things #ksedchat

A3- connecting them is something I strive to do more as a redesign school. I have a block at the end of the day for integrated activities! The possibilities are endless! #ksedchat
I work on this everyday. Math happens, but trying to align with the current lessons is difficult for me! Reading seems to fit in everything. Novels based on science subjects etc.... Project based and hands on activities. #ksedchat
A3) Real life doesn’t present itself with issues separated by content area. It’s a messy business, life, and the interwoven fluency of all topics is key to navigating it more than almost anything else. #ksedchat
A3. It's fun! It is all related! Did I mention that it's fun! I see little light bulbs going on above little heads all day long! I get really pumped and so do kids!! #ksedchat
A3: So much of reading comprehension is based on background knowledge. I love teaching historical fiction and build in a wealth of applicable background knowledge. #ksedchat
A4: In my district people were afraid to try integration or vary from pacing guides or canned curriculum for fear they would not "cover" everything. I co-created @go2Science to support Ts so they would NEVER have to be stopped by fear again. #ksedchat
Still struggle with timing. Have a co-teacher teaching math and SS and planning and getting the timing are still tough! To many ideas, to little time! Just keep working at it! #ksedchat
A1) I think it’s thr amount of training and planing that comes with crossing contents at the HS level, on top of the amount of work we all already do, thats off-putting. Very daunting. And the external outcomes measured don’t exactly incentivize this kind of change. #ksedchat
A4: I think we all have those areas we are less confident in. That is the great thing about collaborating and integrating other areas with colleagues! Share your passion- we have a lot of Ts creating PBL's together! I need you, you need me! #ksedchat
A4: I think highly qualified was a detriment to 2ndary thinking. This is what I am to teach. I think the science and Ss Ts are afraid I cannot teach that content to their expectations. I might not do it the same . . . #ksedchat

A4: I think a lot of people are intimidated by science. It’s such an important part of raising up educated citizens (flat earth?? Climate change deniers??) but some people “cheap out” and go too simple. Reach out to scientists in your area! #KSEDchat
A4. I feel crazy inadequate at this! Mostly I share materials and lesson plans with my partner! I feel like I'm winning him over a little at a time when it doesn't look too overwhelming. #ksedchat

I hear you. I had colleagues who only saw the work and not the benefit. I hope @go2Science helps Ts with that workload as we've done so much of it for you leaving you to innovate and teach! #ksedchat
We're in the home stretch. Q5 is the last one! Last reminder to include #ksedchat@WichitaStateCAS (feel free to tag the other KS colleges of education)
Yes, encouraged them to do small activities etc....start small and work up. Support them with activities/lessons! We are all learners....try, try again! Keep reiterating....failure is okay! I fail everyday and am better because of it! #ksedchat
A5: Someone else summed it up earlier. The real world does not present problems in boxes. Integrated learning is what we do in the adult world. #ksedchat
A5) Integrating curriculum areas such as science, social studies, music, etc., allow our Ss to understand the value of each area. I love sharing with my students how important the study of ALL subjects has been in my career as a music educator. #ksedchat

Well, you’ve done it again. You’ve cost me another perfectly serviceable evening that should have been spent washing dishes and folding laundry. In other words...
THANKS! Fabulous chat, @_NGash95_! #ksedchat
A5: I feel like all jobs and careers are cross curricular. To me, the more we integrate the more we are preparing our Ss to be CCCR! This is why the PBL structure is so powerful! #ksedchat
A5: Someone else summed it up earlier. The real world does not present problems in boxes. Integrated learning is what we do in the adult world. #ksedchat
A5: Instead of the subjects being compartmentalized, they are integrated, and that give Ss a better idea of how it goes together in the real world. @u_nebraska@BakerUniversity
