Hey #teachpos participants! My name is Leslie Hopp, and I'm a first year high school special education teacher from Illinois. Looking forward to discussing leadership and learning new things!
#teachpos - Ray from Rhode Island here.
Favorite vacation spot - anywhere in Colorado. Any time of year, it is beautiful!
Join me over at #edChatRI right after this chat at 8pm EST. We are talking about gatekeepers in education tonight.
A1: I plan on demonstrating leadership with my colleagues by leading lessons in my co-taught classes, as well as introducing new methods and ideas! #teachpos
PS- my fave vacation spot is anywhere there's a concert! I don't go on vacations often- instead, I do mini-roadtrips to new places for concerts :) #teachpos
A1: I demonstrate leadership by truly listening, believing in and building up others, and modeling all the things I endorse. Let us not forget spreading the positive as well!
#teachpos
A1: I like to read and research new topics in education. I then tend to jump in if I feel it is beneficial to my students. Soon others are following what I do. I guess I lead by doing and my students speak for me. #teachpos
A1: I'm helping to build capasity with our staff - sharing learning from PD others are unable to attend. Also working to tell our story so everyone learns of the wonerful happenings at our school. #teachpos
#teachpos - A1 - I demonstrate leadership by always striving to do what is the best for the students that I serve and working tirelessly to make sure that they get the best education possible.
A1: As a T I demonstrate ldrship to other Ts by remaining positive and by offering a menu of possible solutions to problems that arise from time to time. I also hang back to give others time to step up. That's key. #teachpos
I treat my Ts the same way I want them to treat our Ss... I set high expectations, greet them with a smile and get to know them more in depth. I connect with them and make them feel empowered. I enjoy working and coaching them to help them better their craft. #teachpos
Absolutely! They will not only see it but they will feel it. That's how I define an amazing culture... You feel it when you walk in the door. #teachpos
A1 #teachpos I think every teacher has potential for leadership in certain areas of strength. For example, we know who our go-to “techie” teachers are in the building, as well as the ones we trust with advice for dealing with challenging relationships.
Hi, #TeachPos! I'm Rebecca, and I live in Nevada. I've not done a lot of traveling during my life, but so far, my favorite vacation place is Glacier National Park in Montana.
So true!! We need to rely on the using the strengths of others when we have a weakness. That's a great sign of leadership- being able to ask for help! #teachpos
A1~ follow though is critical whether that be being on time for meetings, being prepared, being respectful of other’s time & expertise, committed to cause & action steps, being authentically engaged when conversing with them, & you need to be loyal & trustworthy
#teachpos
A1: As a classroom teacher, I demonstrated leadership by offering to help others (staff members & substitute teachers) as well as doing things that needed to be done such as picking up trash or cleaning up a mess in the lunchroom. #TeachPos
#teachpos - Q2 - I work for an exceptional leader right now. First and foremost, he is overwhelmingly supportive of teachers. Also, he finds ways to get things done and doesn't let kids slip through the cracks. Finally, he gives us autonomy to do our jobs.
A2: Patience and questioning. I need time to process and questions to think and process about with the ability to go back and talk some more. I had an IC who was the best at all of that for me. #teachpos
A2: Positivity, but also a "backbone" for the tough conversations. Someone who speaks the truth, not just what they think you want to hear. Someone who follows through on what they say-creates a team, not anarchy. #teachpos
A2: Openness, trustworthy, flexibility to trust me to do what I felt is best for Ss. Offered opportunities to grow. Provides feedback, positive and constructive. #teachpos
A2: The qualities of my fav. leaders include passion, willingness to do anything they would ask of someone else, able to mediate through tough situations, and did I say passion? It's hard to be led by someone who doesn't actually care about the cause they are apart of. #teachpos
A2: After a quick reflection my exceptional leaders from the past cared about their faculties without question, loved the Ss, provided a nurturing culture, and trusted me to do my job. #teachpos
A2 #teachpos Leaders who listen and take time to make decisions, after seeking additional resources to get the best resolution. Leaders who share responsibility and include others/team effort. Leaders that communicate clearly and in a timely manner. The list goes on!
A2: An amazing quality of a school leader I know is that they are in the classrooms/hallways with students and teacher and they also work to involve all school stakeholders in what happens at a school. #TeachPos
A2~
Kindness & compassion for others and esp the Ss & their Families
Fairness in working with others~
Humor & lightheartedness ❤️
Go to any lengths to foster relationships with Ss,Ts&Fs
Leaders who understood that Ss need to be have full bellies to learn best ❤️
#Teachpos
A2b: an exceptional leader also has the quality to know when they need help and will reach out for that help; knowing there are others who have skills that they are not as strong in. #teachpos
Exactly. When I changed schools a few years ago, I worked for someone who didn't give me much autonomy. It was shocking and completely stymied my creativeness in the classroom. #teachpos
#Teachpos I demonstrate leadership by filling the voids. See something, DO something. This year, for example, I'm inviting all new Ts to dinner at my house..one at a time. Too often, new Ts get keys to the room and then aren't really helped/invited in. Not this year.
A3: allow Ss to take control of their learning. Let them ask questions and find answers. Give littles tasks to complete - even if we the Ts can get it done easier and faster. Ss need to feel they make a difference also. #teachpos
A3: I plan on promoting and inspiring leadership by encouraging self-advocacy, ensuring students are taking responsibility for their work, and allowing them room to fail so they can grow and learn. #teachpos
A3: Allow the Ss to be in control of their learning, to an extent. Help the Ts develop student led classrooms, give jobs to Ss. Empower Ss through doing various things in the room, like lead meetings, etc. #teachpos
#teachpos - A3 - Show them what great leadership looks like. Give them examples of young people who are making a difference. Make sure that they know what good character looks like. It all comes back to the Social/Emotional EDU!
A3: Possibly the most important is to give Ss opportunities to lead! Give them learning and project opportunities to showcase their leadership.
#teachpos
A2: One way to inspire students to become involved in school leadership is to offer all students at a school the opportunity to participate in authentic and meaningful leadership activities. #TeachPos
A3: I am planning on starting this year by focusing on mindfulness, kindness, and community before I start on academics. I also have some ideas on how to change some of my lessons to give more choice to my students. #teachpos
A3~ give them great models to emulate, plentiful opportunities to lead in the teaching & Learning in and outside classroom walls ...teach/model for them , with them how to be resilient 👍
#teachpos
#teachpos Recognize that "leading" is simply demonstrating desired behavior. Ss who answer questions are leaders...so are Ss who ASK them. Recognize leadership in each S, praise them for it, and they will see themselves as generous givers vital to the learning community.
A3: One way to inspire students to become involved in school leadership is to offer all students at a school the opportunity to participate in authentic and meaningful leadership activities. #TeachPos
Learning how to be resilient is so powerful for them. Being able to brush off what felt bad and go at it again and make it more positive is the key. #teachpos
A3: In a nutshell, grab a copy of Paul Solarz's Learn Like a Pirate book #LearnLAP It's a wonderful roadmap to help you and your Ss get there #teachpos
Will do. One question I plan to ask new Ts early: What are you doing well that you think nobody is noticing? What strengths are you demonstrating that we should be learning from? And then find a way to give them a platform. #teachpos
#TeachPos Will, Elem Principal in VA A3: Put them in the position to show their leadership capabilities. Be it as a library aide, or safety patrol, whatever. Put them in spots that will call out their inner leader.

Beach and Mountains are great vacations spots! Up until I was in 4th grade, I lived in a town that was on the coast, and I still miss the beach very much! #TeachPos
