  • megan_hacholski Jan 31 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2: Ss don't feel like they are "learning" or being assessed when they're involved in these activities, yet there is so much room for both. The engagement level is through the roof! #scitlap
  • sciteachkali Jan 31 @ 9:11 PM EST
#scitlap Very curious about this one...I would love to implement some of them!

A1 I have never even heard of breakout or escape rooms for the classroom, but this sounds like a cool idea #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:14 PM EST
Q2: What do you think the benefits of these types of activities are or could be? #scitlap
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:14 PM EST

    In reply to @SavinyaLelynn
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2 The benefit is teaching teamwork and problem solving. #breakout lessons really convince Ss of the importance of both. #scitlap

A2 There's a lot of value in the struggles that happen to solve a breakout. All those things that didn't work to find the answers #sciTLAP
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2 Benefits: collaboration, self control, creative thinking, making connections… the list goes on! #scitlap

Has anyone used one box only with locks with multiple groups in the room? #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Jan 31 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: Backwards design. Start with the end in mind, then work back from there to create your clues. And make sure to do some test runs to find any kinks or loopholes! #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 31 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Collaboration skills, critical thinking, engaging and hands on, making connections and even applying XCC! #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: I like that they had to put multiple pieces of information together to get an answer #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:18 PM EST
    @Chucktaft Any insight??? #scitlap
    • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:17 PM EST
Has anyone used one box only with locks with multiple groups in the room? #scitlap
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:18 PM EST
I know, me too! I think setting the locks intimidates me. I love the digital ones though! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:19 PM EST
Yes, biggest thing was doing it without instructions. Hard to hold back with your kids. Takes awhile, but they will get it. #scitlap
    In reply to @Partain_Science, @SavinyaLelynn
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:19 PM EST
Hey @SciTeach7Davis Great to see you after a long break! #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: I love how they cause the Ss to mix content knowledge with grit and problem-solving skills. I have had Ss go home to finish it if they didn't get out at school even though it wasn't assigned. #scitlap
    In reply to @Partain_Science
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:19 PM EST
There is a noticeable change in how my Ss tackle science labs after they work on a Breakout Box. They work much better together. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 31 @ 9:19 PM EST
That's what my colleague does most of the time. One box, multiple locks and ways open the box. Have seen it done. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:20 PM EST
Q3: For those newer to facilitating (not building) this type of activity, what hints do you have to help us be successful? #scitlap
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:20 PM EST
I think I need to participate in one first. #scitlap
    In reply to @MarianaGSerrato
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 Run through it yourself first. Set ground rules for keeping locks/codes a secret! #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 Do an escape room in the mall or similar experience. Also look through a bunch of ones others have made for ideas. For me planning takes months. #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: I give my Ss 3 "chips" that they can use to ask for a clue. It makes them think about it before asking for help. When their chips are gone they can't ask anymore. #scitlap
    In reply to @Partain_Science
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:22 PM EST
I can get my hands on six boxes....but I'm worried about keeping it all straight and resetting between classes. #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience, @daleyscience
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:22 PM EST
Yes, ground rules are so important. Let them know what is on or off limits. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:22 PM EST
Do you use diff codes for each class? #scitlap
    In reply to @crawfordscience, @PerkyScience, @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 Tips for facilitating: don't give hints too easily, redirect students that seem frustrated (encourage), keep an eye on the time #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:23 PM EST
Honestly the locks were probably the hardest part for me! #scitlap
    In reply to @crawfordscience, @daleyscience
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:23 PM EST
IN digital the hints are part of the google form maze. and some kind of cryptic. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
I do 30 minute breakouts and don't give hints till 15 minutes in. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
No, I reset as kids unlock. Color coding locks and boxes, helped me keep track of everything. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea, @crawfordscience, @PerkyScience
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
I also had themed prizes for winning team! Rock Cycle breakout = Pop rocks #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
I like this! I had thought about doing formal “hints” but decided I didn’t want to make it too complicated for me! #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
Where mine is digital I don't. I think to do it I would have to create 2 similar google sites so that there were different clues. Some are easy to change, but most are built into the activity. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea, @crawfordscience, @daleyscience
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:24 PM EST
I've only done digital ones. And no. Same codes. Only had one kid once announce the answers to the class coming in. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea, @PerkyScience, @daleyscience
  • megan_hacholski Jan 31 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4: The best @breakoutEDU have a clear real-world connection that Ss are genuinely interested in. Include nods to their favorite movies, books, even memes to keep their attention. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:25 PM EST
    Love it!! #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:25 PM EST
Keeping it simple lets me be involved in the activity with the kids rather than sweating the details. #scitlap
    In reply to @Partain_Science
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:26 PM EST
Ss would love to see their favorite memes. Good idea! #scitlap
    In reply to @megan_hacholski, @breakoutEDU
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:26 PM EST
Happened once to me. They take an eternity to build and it stinks! I wish google forms let you make a copy of a site. #scitlap
    In reply to @crawfordscience, @PerkyScience, @daleyscience
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:26 PM EST
    that is cute! #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q4: For teachers interested in building their own breakout activity, what advice (or questions) do you have? #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:27 PM EST
Agreed! I also wanted them and me to feel successful our 1st time. I also want the other T in my dept to try it. #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:28 PM EST
A3 I take celebration pictures of the winning teams, and post them in the room. #scitlap
  • SavinyaLelynn Jan 31 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4 I would love to do this. But I feel like it would take forever to build. Any suggestions? #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:28 PM EST
I have a "competition" between all classes. That way people are less likely to enable others to win. #scitlap
    In reply to @SueAtSea, @crawfordscience, @daleyscience
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4 Give yourself plenty of time. The engagement is huge! #scitlap
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:29 PM EST
    BOOM! Yaaassss! #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience, @crawfordscience, @daleyscience
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4) Perhaps start with a "break in" of only one question. Or "break out" like an exit ticket. Related to the day's content. OR today it would've been cool to have the eclipse streaming on the board and that would take Ss to a "breakout" problem.... #scitlap
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4 I think these are easier to do and create with a partner to talk it through. Find someone else, even if not your content (our librarian, for instance) to work through it with #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:29 PM EST
Not forever but it is involved and well worth it. Brainstorm ideas and look at other breakouts. Gather materials and see what you can come up with. #scitlap
    In reply to @SavinyaLelynn
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:30 PM EST
It gets easier as you get experienced. IMHO it is worth the effort! #scitlap
    In reply to @SavinyaLelynn
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4: For digital ones here is a list of activities you can embed into the activity. It is a good place to start as you figure out what to use: https://t.co/JevpY8ZoUn #scitlap
    In reply to @Partain_Science
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4 Backwards design, MAKE NOTES, don't make your clues linear. You want different groups to solve different parts of the break out simultaneously. You don't want to have to do clue 1, then 2, etc. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:30 PM EST
I just talk to myself constantly. ;) #scitlap

  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 31 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: I wondere how you keep everything organized. Also, I see some of you mentioned 15 or 30 min. How many locks/breakout. I guess I am thinking too grandiose. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Jan 31 @ 9:32 PM EST
A5: I created a @breakoutEDU at the end of an Anatomy unit where my "med Ss" were give a Case File of a patient w/ a mystery disease. There were clues all around the room to help them diagnose, leading them to a syringe of antidote locked in the final box. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Jan 31 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5B: I even created a GMail account that the "med Ss" shared, where they found an important message from the lead doctor! Next time, I might even have another T email that account in real time to provide more clues. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 31 @ 9:33 PM EST
Thank you!. Having only participated I draw a blank on what to include (or not). #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience, @Partain_Science
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:33 PM EST
I have a binder with the box. Many of the clues are in the binder. Ss are encouraged to break into smaller groups for different puzzles. #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:33 PM EST
I was able to build my last one in just a few hours. I usually have 4 locks: a color, a number, a direction and a word. Keep in mind where you want to go and build to that. Also sooo helpful to pair up with someone and build together. #scitlap
    In reply to @SavinyaLelynn
  • crawfordscience Jan 31 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4 I like it when you have to use two or more clues together to get a lock (less straightforward) #sciTLAP
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:34 PM EST
Q5: Share with us a successful breakout you have used or an idea you have for creating one! #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:34 PM EST
It does take a lot of planning, but so worth it. Use lots of locks and different types. #scitlap
    In reply to @MarianaGSerrato
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:35 PM EST
I like to have clues that give you ideas of where to find more clues. Also including red herrings is fun. I had one say, "you earned a cookie". Ss spent so much time trying to figure out what they were supposed to do with the virtual cookie. #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 31 @ 9:36 PM EST
Do you have some sort of mind-map/visual you can share? I guess my mind draws a complete blank on how to do that. :( #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:36 PM EST
Each of my locks had usually had a question per digit on the combo. It seemed to work #scitlap
    In reply to @crawfordscience
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:37 PM EST
I don't include red herrings on purpose anymore. Ss find their own. I put a box in a box and Ss FLIPPED when they thought they were done and weren't. #scitlap
    In reply to @PerkyScience, @daleyscience
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:37 PM EST
A5 Okay, I started a few days before talking nonchalantly about a giant electromagnet affecting the classroom doors. A few days later, a fake news article, some loud sound effects, epic panicking acting skills, and boom Magnetism Breakout!! #scitlap
  • SueAtSea Jan 31 @ 9:37 PM EST
A5 Here is one that I made https://t.co/cE8BiMU2cr One answer is something specific to me, though! #scitlap

My kids all seemed to love the clues that utilized the UV flashlight #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:37 PM EST
A5) our school used a digital one at a fac mtg to announce a big event. The final clue was the date of the event, if i remember correctly #scitlap

A6: It's important to group students ahead of time to ensure full participation. @breakoutEDU activities, IMO, should never be completed alone. Have a conversation about being inclusive prior to the lesson. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 31 @ 9:39 PM EST
Ss LOVE that UV flashlight. Adds that something special to the event. Like frosting on a cake. #scitlap

I see your point, but I also just like saying. Okay, we're "locked in", Escape. No groups, no rules, just do it! #scitlap

A6 Emphasize how all voices need to be heard and considered to solve clues. Having clues that require different skills/knowledge helps inclusion too. #scitlap

A5 I have done several digital breakouts with my Gaming elective. Would like to do one incorporating Raspberry Pi, and for my NGSS units. #scitlap

A6 I vary the type of questions and clues. There is no one person that gets it “all” before others! #scitlap

Sometimes if no groups are getting out, I try seeing if they can combine efforts and break out as a class instead #scitlap

I agree with grouping Ss beforehand. Particularly there 1st couple of times. My least successful group was probably due to my Ss placement. #scitlap #lessonlearned

I know gr8 Tchr @cates_julie has an excellent breakout on invasive species. I plan to use at least once this year. #scitlap

A7: The @breakoutEDU website has some great pre-made lessons, but I prefer to create them myself based on the group of kids I have. Twitter is hands-down the best place for advice or creative theme ideas. #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 31 @ 9:46 PM EST
I haven't. I believe if you buy the boxes you get a subscription of awhile...or at least that is what I think my librarian said @Library_Krueger #scitlap

As I am reading some of this, and the list of activities shared by @PerkyScience, I was reminded of LearningApps. https://t.co/aBNFrNeBdW The Puzzle one allows you to create a crossword with a message revealed by solving it. #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:46 PM EST
A6: I think it is good to have a conversation that perhaps not everyone will break-out. I don't think I have had 100% since the first one that was too easy. Breakouts are a good way for Ss to learn that struggle is a good thing & success can be celebrated along the way. #scitlap

A6: I do use hint cards, Ss who have solved can give hints/help as they see need, I make small groups but they can collaborate. Not sure how what challenges will be with escape room scenarios. #scitlap

Oooo. thanks, I am adding it to my list of resources! There are so many. One of my favorites used a google slide with shapes that you moved to reveal the color code when they were in the right order based on what they were covering. So many possibilities. #scitlap

For simple warm-up type breakouts try @MetaverseApp if your kids have access to devices. They have many already made and they aren't that hard to make on your own. or copy and adapt a pre-made. #scitlap

A7 I recommend the tutorial on the digital breakoutedu page. My only problem is some sites blocked. I also have attended sessions at EdCamps. #scitlap
  • PerkyScience Jan 31 @ 9:53 PM EST
Plus keep in mind the digital ones usually don't have to be linear. The Ss can solve one part and then a different part in any order. They can leave and come back. Start with a scenario/theme and then build from there. #scitlap

ugh. That's pretty pricey in my world. Maybe if you were facilitating breakouts for multiple classes/grade levels. Otherwise, I don't think you would use it enough to justify. #scitlap

I have and am trying to wrap my brain around how to make it work using just the free version. It limits the number of teams. Klikaklu https://t.co/FK3iNxj006 is another one I want to try. it is cheeper if you decide to pay for more teams. #scitlap
