Love it. I am. #bcedchat

Looking forward to tonight's chat.
Karen Fadum Communicating Student Learning Helping Teacher (K-7) Sd36 Interested in all things documenting student learning especially digital portfolios @Surrey_Schools#bcedchat hello everyone
Q1:What are some of the ways you and your students document growth, progress and student learning? How efficient, interactive, or meaningful do you think these methods are? #bcedchat
A1: love the work being done in our classes with fresh grade. This student is documenting her art to reflect and share with her family and teacher. #bcedchat
Love Love Love using @fresh grade to archive artifacts of student Learning with combo of descriptive feedback and performance standard exemplars (all focused on āwhat nextā) #bcedchat
A1. This is a great question. Context: 4th Education Course. Love reflective journals and group discussion. Lots of co-construction and unexpected aha's. End course with IGNITE presentation to summarize and reflect on learning. Love sharing and ongoing feedback. #bcedchat
Q1:What are some of the ways you and your students document growth, progress and student learning? How efficient, interactive, or meaningful do you think these methods are? #bcedchat
Our students and staff are documenting student learning through: written reflections, interviews. videos, photos then sharing on FreshGrade. All of our classes are using FreshGrade. #bcedchat
Q1A1: @RobynThiessen got me into @FreshGrade which my class loves and my whole school now uses. Kids also love it when I make powerpoints to show the progress of the class over time. #bcedchat
A1 - Frequent formative assessment...the only way to know if you have learned something is to produce the knowledge.
Here's where I've worked with my students to assess learning:
https://t.co/XYLENXBlK0#bcedchat
Q1:What are some of the ways you and your students document growth, progress and student learning? How efficient, interactive, or meaningful do you think these methods are? #bcedchat
A1: Starting off nice & easy, I see :P
I'm really trying to involve / give ownership to Ss throughout the process- beginning, middle & end. Ex: pre"test" for math, involve them in the goal setting, clear learning intentions/targets, self assessment of those targets #bcedchat
A1. worked with a Math teacher this semester: test marks are almost all the documentation. S's get marked test back for @10 mins to complete "self assessment sheet. Very traditional dept. :-( Looking for ways to inspire changes. #bcedchat
A1: Reading and Writing we are keeping records to reflect back on. Portfolio and journal. The writing portfolio will be examined at multiple points and they will reflect end of year on their own growth. #bcedchat Brent from Alberta jumping in :)
Q1:What are some of the ways you and your students document growth, progress and student learning? How efficient, interactive, or meaningful do you think these methods are? #bcedchat
I would say yes. IGNITE in a secondary mathematics class??? Hello #corecompetencies. It would be so fun. I would do it in a heart beat. Can focus on the BIG IDEAS. Love it. #bcedchat
A1 We also as a school document student learning through newsletters, website, Facebook and Twitter. These have been great for promoting our studentsā work, activities and events to a larger audience. #bcedchat
Many are using it as an enhancement to the report card - I am pushing myself to only use it (gradebook even put aside w focus on ābig pictureā themes) #bcedchat
20 PPT slides, 5 minutes... auto-advance. Must summarize key ideas in a short time. Awesome process to create an IGNITE. Here's a link. https://t.co/ncBfpHxdK8
Check it out. #bcedchat#ignite
We have a writing process board that charts our progress through our in-class work in progress!
They love to move up on the board and try to move their "clip!" #bcedchat
A1: had great success in having writing conferences (from Writing Power- @AdrienneGear)- includes their own reflection. The kids do all the work. Again, they reflect, set goals and make changes moving forward. Easy to show growth! #bcedchat
A2: When a student has the control to create and choose what representation of their learning is documented to be shared, there is a greater opportunity for deeper learning and ownership which leads to further learning. #bcedchat
A2. Documenting student learning focuses on the process... and uses product to help students to self-actualize their progress, achievements, and establish strategies on where to go next or how to get to where they want to be. It's so in line with formative assessment. #bcedchat
Do you have a lot of parents come in to the school? Have you ever discussed a way to share the documentation panels to all parents/students? Perhaps digitally, newsletter? #bcedchat
Q2A2: I have younger students who are full of ideas and love to share. Tomorrow we are having a pattern party to show our growth in Math. Their idea. #bcedchat
A2: I use @FreshGrade and try to document the PROCESSES of learning (good/bad/ugly). This shows parents a snapshot of how they are learning, instead of an end product of learning. When we honour the process, we can also honour the process. #bcedchat
Q2A2: I have younger students who are full of ideas and love to share. Tomorrow we are having a pattern party to show our growth in Math. Their idea. #bcedchat
Absolutely. I provide prompt questions based on learning intentions or topic of class. That said, students are welcome to reflect and document on what they believe is important. My job is to provoke them into thinking and reflection. Their job is to think and reflect. #bcedchat
A2 Growth in learning can be very abstract for young learners. SometimesI have them focus on how it feels (easier, happier, less stressed) and talk about that. Other kids will chime in too. I.e. āI like school nowā #bcedchat
Q3: Do you use technology to document learning? What are some of the apps and ways that you use them in your classroom for documenting student learning? #bcedchat
I think its essential that, when trying new things, Ss know that you are learning with them. Don't be afraid to talk about learning best practices together. #bcedchat
@CraigMah this one is how I felt on Friday...I had a GREAT week back...I loved being back with my littles...term 2 is my favourite...but was dead tired #bcedchat
A3 anything that takes pictures and video. Digital portefolio. I wish we can have an interactive board for ss, parents and myself to comment on, not in scolantis #bcedchat
A3: I remember when I used marks programmes for calculating percentages to show learning. Now we use technology to share our learning visually with the world! Learning is a social act and needs to be shared. #bcedchat
@CraigMah this one is how I felt on Friday...I had a GREAT week back...I loved being back with my littles...term 2 is my favourite...but was dead tired #bcedchat
BCTF surveyed #bced teachers about what digital reporting tools they are using, the quality of tools and the impact on their work. The findings are in a research report here: https://t.co/hAUcHjkLHw
Documentation in a non traditional classroom can be challenging at times. Sharing photos and videos in assemblies and creating boards for all to see inside has been well received. Also use nature journals on dry days #bcedchat
A3. I use PPT & Word... for reflective journals & IGNITE. I would love to use Google docs to make the reflection process a collective effort. I would love to try a collective reflection journal... more dialogical and online. Go beyond a Wordle. That would be fun. #bcedchat
Q3: Do you use technology to document learning? What are some of the apps and ways that you use them in your classroom for documenting student learning? #bcedchat
A3: We use @FreshGrade to store the documentations but we create with many apps. My fave right now is āShadow Puppetā because its SUPER easy, and gives kids the opportunity to narrate their ā learning storyā in their own words, AND using their actual voice! #bcedchat
A3- SD42 has an in district on-line Portfolio program. My students and I post videos, pictures, pdfs etc. to document successes and failures of our learning. #bcedchat
Q3: Do you use technology to document learning? What are some of the apps and ways that you use them in your classroom for documenting student learning? #bcedchat
A3: Most work is done on G-Drive so that is easy to store artifacts of completed work. I have tried to get the Ss to use things like Flipgrid or Snapchat but they think it is lame that I am trying to ruin snapchat lol #bcedchat
Q3: Do you use technology to document learning? What are some of the apps and ways that you use them in your classroom for documenting student learning? #bcedchat
We have tried using FreshGrade at the Highschool level- it is difficult over time- we struggling we lack of parents logging in- and the amount of work to upload #bcedchat
A3. We simply use photos of the making process, as students have a tangible textiles or foods product to show in the end. Iām toying with them doing instructional videos to share with others what they did #bcedchat
A3. right now my Ss are using Google Sites to create digital portfolios of projects and activities in each unit we cover. I am looking for other things, though #bcedchat
A2: Documentation is just as much for the educators involved as for the students. Helps educators to reflect on their teaching and where students are and set instructional intentions based on what they are noticing. Have noticed it is impacting practice. #bcedchat

How do they like Flipgrid? It seems like something that should work for documenting learning, but I haven't seen it 'in action in school', yet. #bcedchat
the biggest issue I found is the student at the secondary do not have the vocabulary to fully describe what they are working on and the next step. we need to provide ideas and models #bcedchat
A3 I have found that for teachers, using apps on top of FreshGrade can be overwhelming and time consuming. If just starting simply use your iPadās camera and video. The move to the fancy stuff once comfortable. #bcedchat
A3- historically we have used googlesites, or weebly websites to document digital portfolio style...I am using myblueprint with my Careers 8 and 9 classes- not too bad #bcedchat
#bcedchat Google Docs, Forms & Classroom - Students can add comments and you will be able to see who wrote what. In Forms, feedback setting can be anonymous to the student but not the teacher. Exit slips in Forms.

Depends what they are for. I find that there are many great 'inclusive apps that we use on the ipads, but am still struggling finding good ones for those seeking deeper learning (gifted). #bcedchat
A3 So many apps out there. My students see technology as something grown-ups use which means they don't get any attention! I have spent up until now bringing in technology slowly. Oops keep forgetting to put #bcedchat
A3: Many teachers in Richmond used FreshGrade but our district is now using Scholantis for eportfolios. The PicCollage app is popular for in the moment documentation. I particularly like using screencasting apps in mathematics. I use PowerPoint to create doc panels. #bcedchat
I did #IGNITE with my kiddos and was massively impressed by their engagement and āProfressionalismā - The most effective ones came from my 8 year olds who seemed fearless in the face of a challenge. #bcedchat
I wonder if it is about the video aspect....could they just video their 'products' and have a written reflection (for those that do not want to be on camera)? #bcedchat
A3: @FreshGrade- comparing 2 of the same types of skills, processes or products. But making sure to focus on the process and growth, not product.
padlet,
hoping to try flipgrid soon #bcedchat
A4. Oooo. You gave the answer away. THE STUDENT. Teachers are the facilitators. I would love to have students be able to choose exemplars of their learning. That would be awesome. #bcedchat
A4: #bcedchat- it is a lot easier as the kids get older to switch the onus onto them. Many of my Grade 8's who have been using Freshgrade were pretty comfortable since they have used it over the last couple of years!

You can make them however you like... The student controls that. We will not make them public until right before they email link to their parents. Afterwards, they can keep public or change. #bcedchat
A4: Yes!!!! Move the documenting and curating of that learning to the students. Part of their digital portfolio. Reminds me of the K's and their 'this is me' each month. It's amazing to see their growth and ability to write their name. #bcedchat
A3: Students (even Kinders) use iPods to access @Freshgrade. I believe tech needs to be available as ONE tool when it is needed not waiting for it to arrive after the fact. All about capturing learning in the moment.#bcedchat
In secondary we are standing on the shoulders of our elementary and middle colleagues as they do so much of the heavy lifting teaching S's the language and skills of self reflection and assessment. THANK YOU!! #bcedchat
A4- Ss frequently photograph and video each other so that they have digital records of what we are doing. This does require reminders on occasion they are improving. #bcedchat

A2: iPad/photo booth is always used in our class to take pictures and document the Ss stories during story workshop. With limited time, the iPad helps the Ss that need scribing at a later stage. #bcedchat
Have you tried the app @explaineverything, it allows students to integrate videos, picts, whiteboard drawings, text, etc to help them document and show their learning, its one of my favourites and students love it. Helps with the vocab barriers as it integrates visuals #bcedchat
I use it with my 3/4/5s but honestly it could be used from K-12. It gives Ss an opportunity to choose 5+ photos, and then they can narrate the photos, soon in/out, highlight, and āsparkleā whatever is important in each image. Iāll see if I can find a good example to share!

Hey everyone in #bcedchat- Karen has a lot of perspectives as she has been our district helping teacher for #CSL in #sd36learn the last 4 years. #Amazingness

A4 definitely my students. They share pics of their work all the time (usu as snapchats or texts). If theyāre sending a snap to their mom bc theyāre proud of what theyāve done, that ācountsā, right? #bcedchat
A4: My students are definitely 21st century kids who are great advocates for themselves so sometimes it is me, sometimes it is them, but mostly it is a team effort. They are very creative at how they can show me their learning. #bcedchat
A3: PicCollage, iMovie Trailer, iPevo Whiteboard, Explain Everything all go to's for documenting growth over time or students recording their thinking #bcedchat
A4 Itās the dream for students to take the lead in the sharing eventually I think. Love how this data from FreshGrade use in Surrey in 2916-2017 year shows that students posted the most. #bcedchat
A4: Many of our K students are pretty "in charge" of their eportfolios. It is amazing to see and reminds us that children are capable. Also important that students have choice as to what they want to post int heir eportfolios -that is part of the self-reflection process #bcedchat

What are children learning in B.C. with new #SOGI indoctrination?
Is there one teacher in #bcedchat speaking up for children who are being lead towards harmful/sterilizing cross-hormone transitions promoted through #SOGI123 education?
It's best to homeschool. #bced
Oh I also use a step to step chart to allow them to assess what they are doing and where they are at. It's helps with Ss independence and keeps them on task #bcedchat
A5. If students are given the choice, autonomy, and agency to document their learning, then they are in control of their own learning. Our job as educators is to help them own their learning and LOVE IT. Be proud of it. Know their strengths. Be connected with self. #bcedchat
A4: Sometimes SLOW is the fastest way to get there! Modelling and slowly releasing responsibility allowed my grade ones to be uploading evidence of learning and commenting on their @FreshGrade portfolios #bcedchat
A5: I think kids having a voice in the classroom where their ideas are respected and built on by others (core competencies) leads to students taking charge of their learning. This may or may not be connected to documenting. #bcedchat
A5 when students document their own learning and are supported in doing so, they are able to lead their learning, recognize what they need to learn, develop skills of self awareness. #bcedchat
@bcedchat@CraigMah@sd36msjames - I wish I could stay but its bedtimes for the ā3 little Kellersā and I need both hands to cuddle and hold the copy of #HarryPotter (YES! Im finally reading it!!) #bcedchat
A5: There can be no learning/growth without reflection. If documentation only involves capturing moments with photos or videos, that is not really mindful of its intent. We need to build in structures so that students notice, wonder, reflect on their own learning. #bcedchat
A5: They can actually see the process and can/will make decisions, submissions and reflections about their own learning. If you make this your focus, the ownership is inherent and inevitable! #bcedchat
Q6: How do you communicate/share the learning you have documented? (comments, student reflection, assessments, learning stories, conferencing etc.) #bcedchat
PicCollage ExplainEverything @bookcreator@30hands Doceri ShowMe Skitch are the main apps I use with students to represent and share their thinking and learning #bcedchat

A6. Ss email parents a link to their Google Site (digital portfolio) they have created. I try to document and post Ss work and activities to our school Facebook as much as possible. #bcedchat
A6 This year my class really like conferences. They also like to bring in their parents at the beginning or end of the day to show what they have done. #bcedchat
Q5: teaches them independence and self-reflection!! Building their CC skills!!! I use pegs, pictures and step to step to allow them to mark where they are at. #bcedchat
A6. It would depend on context. We communicate student learning amongst ourselves in my 4th year classes. I would love to use @FreshGrade to share student learning with parents in K-12. I'd love to have community or public involved too. Maybe an open house of learning. #bcedchat
Q6: How do you communicate/share the learning you have documented? (comments, student reflection, assessments, learning stories, conferencing etc.) #bcedchat
#bcedchat sadly mommy duty calls Thank you for moderating @sd36msjames and @CraigMah will be catching up on this later! sending gratitude to everyone in this chat tonight

Students gain understanding that learning is a never ending process. They are continually reflecting and discovering or being guided to new questions. Documenting removes the perception that demonstrating learning is the final presentation/test/project #bcedchat
Totally, in my class we do open doors once a month, students invite loved ones to come in and share learning with, it helps us cover and discuss what the digital portfolios can't #bcedchat
I used to just leave my teacher app open on the ipad and the Ss would use IT to document (I just taught them how to find their own name/photo from the list). This way Ss didnāt need to log in. Sometimes there were āoopsā posts to the wrong portfolio, but only a few. #bcedchat

Q6: portfolio and around the class after a big project. I have Parent Read on Fridays and the Ss get to share their readings and work with their pts. #bcedchat
I'm loving the 'mobile lab' that we use. Teachers roll the laptops into the room and the students use them for the learning and then documenting their learning. #bcedchat

Absolutely, a T can easily go in and change the ārecipientā with a few clicks - SUPER easy! In the beginning the kids would have to bring it to me to ādouble checkā before they could click āpostā #bcedchat.

A6: I am trying to have students do more of the documentation and reflection. I will provide the feedback, (rubric, comments, marking) and their job is interpret the feedback, reflect, apply for next time. Ex prompt: "When I read the feedback, I see that..." #bcedchat
A7. Invite them in. I would love to learn more about my kid's learning. It's fun to learn more about my kid in a different context... school... and understand how she thinks, feels, and learns... and how I can help or support her in her learning if needed. #bcedchat
Q7: How do you engage parents with documenting student learning and continue the learning conversations? Has this helped you, your parent, or student see something that might otherwise be missed? #bcedchat
A7 been some great conversations - especially for students who have not thrived with green check marks and red Xs - descriptive feedback letting them know how things are going (and using Learner Profiles as Rosetta stones for parents who think they like ABCs) #bcedchat
A7 through FreshGrade one simple thing is parents are more engaged in what students are doing in class. Simple recognition of the learning through a comment or a question on the ride home goes a long way for students for motivation and positive self awareness. #bcedchat
Q8: What are some great professional development resources you recommend on Documenting Student Learning? (books, blogs, websites, people to follow on twitter)#bcedchat
It's true. The system signals this. I get grades, huge line ups or appointment times I cannot make as a parent. Not easy or inviting. Must find viable solutions to discuss student learning in a meaningful way for Ts, Ss, and Ps.. #bcedchat
Q8: What are some great professional development resources you recommend on Documenting Student Learning? (books, blogs, websites, people to follow on twitter)#bcedchat
Definitely buddies helps, but we use the iPads for the primaries (including K's). Even K's can learn how to take a picture of their work. Takes some time to move towards filing the documentation but that's okay. #bcedchat

Q7 I start my day with "choice time" which are play - based activities designed by the students and set up by them. This gives me an opportunity to share with parents what learning is going on in the classroom. #bcedchat
A7 we had PT conferences and we used to have all our teachersā schedules filled. We barely had any appointments. Parents are feeling so connected through Fresh Grade they donāt feel the need to make an appointment! #bcedchat
A8: Here are four books that have nudged my thinking around pedagogical documentation - which is a little different I think, than what we have been chatting about this evening, but they may have some ideas you might find interesting. #bcedchat
