Q1: How do you avoid “edutainment” where the play (game-based learning) becomes the reward for doing the problem?
-
-
-
A1: Why is edutainment seen as bad? There are lots of motivating factors. Play is one of them but not the only one
-
A1-Content specific is the key. Sometime we use cause it's fun, but won't help graduate or get job. Keep it relevant
-
-
A1 - I think age appropriate play can be a good thing.
-
A1:I'm not a huge game user but I love competitions.Wevare having an essay "showdown" right now and Ss are enjoying it.
-
Q2: Should game-based learning be hard/difficult as well as fun? or will it ruin it?
-
A1 There is something to say about instant gratification whether it's rewarding or not, one can always adapt the game
-
Parcheesi was one of my favorites. My husband just played it with me for the first time. :) https://t.co/qrM51WRhsI
-
A1: Competition drives Ss, so if it makes them learn or demonstrate what they learned better, then so be it!
-
A2-Yes...I think the more challenging, the better it can be. Students need to understand that it takes work to win.
-
A2: Challenging IS fun. Gotsta build those critical thinking skillz!
-
A2: "dumbing down" material just to make it fun defeats the purpose, it should still challenge, the game aspect will encourage
-
A2:hard enough to challenge/provoke thought;easy enough to be fun.
-
A2 - I think many of the games our students play are hard/difficult & they enjoy them. I think they'd appreciate the challenge.
-
Ha, I love it. We did a Super Bowl Data Party last Fri, acting like a coach I said, " drop down & give me two graphs."
-
Games can be a great way to encourage critical thinking
-
Q3: Why aren’t more educators using Game-Based Learning?
-
A2 I think games should be scaffolded leading into a deeper question for the crescendo of excitement from the Ss
-
-
A3-Fear of creating something new and it not working...but that's truly what learning & education should be.
-
A3: Creating a solid game based lesson can be very time consuming, coming up with ?s, rules, etc.
-
I actually think that is the fun part...I mean who really wants to teach history. It's in the past anyway.
-
A3 Sadly, I think it's the prep work. Plus, some of the templates I want on TPayT cost $
-
A3:I think some have a hard time fitting into curriculum.Testing,standards,etc.Not saying it can't help but just hard to add.
-
A3: Learning how to be innovative in the classroom takes a lot of effort. Ts are overburdened as is. Ts need to see relevance
-
A3: I think that would take a lot of front loading, admin support, and perhaps - consistent internet...
-
A3: the real ? is how to we make teaching an art again and empower Ts to create? How to we refuel their fire for teaching?
-
EXACTLY! I love figuring out new ways to reach people. It drives me.
-
Kahoot is a good one! I like that it is good formative & fun.
-
Q4: When using Game-Based Learning, do you feel students learn more or less than? and Why?
-
A4-I think there understanding is deeper since typically speed is key in
-
A4: Mainly use for review, but occasionally it's to introduce a concept in a fun way, such as my Red Scare game
-
A4: If Ss are more engaged itcan lead to increased retention and application of knowledge. The has to be good though
-
extra credit incentives, no matter how small, always motivate
-
Sorry , apparently my kids need cereal 😡😜 See you next Monday? Presidents Day?
-
A4: I've used gamification for review & the students LOVED it. I'd be interested to see my content gamified. Could be amazing.
-
Q5: Now, share a Game-Based Learning activity you did or someone else did. (links, websites, etc...are ok)
-
A5: Red Scare of the 1950s game where Ss need to figure out who are the evil "reds" and form teams. It gets a little cutthroat!
-
A5: I'm going to have to go with using Kahoot! I want to try using for collaborative learning
-
-
A5-Used concept of as an end of the year project where they had to incorporate a semester worth in a biz idea
-
A5: Old school folder games made up my centers way back when and they were always a hit!
-
A5: Kahoot it is! It's been convenient and the students like it. (when we have consistent internet) :)
-
A5: Used to do "trashketball" where if a review ? was answered correctly, got to shoot for points
-
