#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hello, Dene here from Orlando, serving as moderator tonight, talking about diversity and community from various angles! I teach Grades 4-5 ELA, Tech and Gifted. #FLEdChat
As you are joining us tonight, and in lieu of Teacher Appreciation Week, tell us of your diverse experiences. 1) How long in education? 2) levels of education taught 3) How many regions you've taught in. #FLEdChat
12 years in for me! I have taught only in the Orlando area officially, but influence tends to reach farther. In some form, I have taught all grade levels, K-12. #FLEdChat
A1: I would def have to say Toast and butter. The toast can be one of various types of bread and the butter spreads and adjoins to the toast particularly when things heat up! #FLEdChat
Diversity ... community like a food ... I am thinking sushi ... so many different flavors all wrapped together, but yet each flavor stands out #fledchat
Well Flagler is the potato county—and since these are inextricably linked, they both are different ways you could prepare potatoes! Chips and fries and mashed and potato salad and baked and home fries and hash browns and ....man I really like potatoes. #fledchat

A1: Hmm... diversity and community equal to the food combination of frosting on a cake. Diversity in a communit makes it not only beautiful but full of amazing flavors (point of views) . #FLEdChat
Recognizing that even though we are all at our base plain potatoes...the recipe of our identity is varied and has diff spices/ingredients. Knowing and appreciating the difference in the recipe is how we value diversity...in our potatoes. Man I’m pushing this analogy #fledchat a2
#fledchat a2: dough is hand made, needs just the right care 2 rise (like our children). This is also the 'base' from which we build the rest of the meal. Amt of ingredients usually follows a recipe - like culture & society rules. But you can add own spices to own slice of life

A3: I would have to say lemonade, because lemons alone may be bitter or sour, but when combined with water and sugar, oh the heaven that happens! #FLEdChat
A3: Tea...some like it super sweet, others like it plain. Some of us like it somewhere in the middle. But it blends perfectly with just about any meal. #FLedChat
A3. I liken diversity and community to all the beverages you can get at a coffee house. There's brewed, decaf (why even bother), and your more complex drinks like lattes with lots of different flavor combinations. There is even tea. Something for every taste. #FLEdChat
A2: I think the main ingredients in a diverse community include different perspectives and point of views that may differ from our own as well as acceptance and tolerance. #FLEdChat
Oh this is fun! Making me think..#fledchat A3 Sangria!!! A little wine (we get better with age and maturity #5HabitsofMind) with lots of fresh fruit (perspectives, up to date views). Diversity in fruits that you add can give a whole different 'taste'.

Oh pass me a glass why don't you! That is good stuff! I love the description too, and by the power of the fruit combined...(channeling my inner Captain Planet!) haha #FLEdChat

Q4: Soup and Salad: How would you begin a conversation about diversity and community with your students in the classroom? Or with your colleagues? #FLEdChat

A3: #FLEDChat I would have to say a nice cup of hot coffee/chocolate. It warms you up on those cold mornings and really gets you going when you don't have much other motivation.
A3: if diversity and community was a beverage combo, I would say it is sweet lemonade because it is always refreshing+ full of zest. It broadens our Horizons and lets us see others in a totally different light and we get to learn lessons that can be learned otherwise. #FLEdChat

#fledchat This reminds me of #TheGiver . Would we only like to each plain salad or rather have different toppings and choices to make live interesting.
Salads ... so many different varieties from which to choose ... I prefer to make my own at a salad bar ... a variety of lettuce ... cheeses ... vegetables ... all of which are not normally available to you at home.#fledchat
Q5: If you could find diversity on the shelves at a department store, what would it look like and how much would like? How much would it cost? What store? #FLEdChat
A4.1 Also I like the use of drama where under certain conditions of Actor's toolbox, students have to intentionally group or pair up and talk about a thing. #FLEdChat

A4: There are many ways to bring these conversations in your classrooms. I like to read books that showcase diversity. Many articles have been published in the Scholastic Magazine that we use in our classroom that showcase diversity of communities and ideas. #FLEdChat
A5. This question makes me think of the rugs at IKEA. Lots of colors, some more expensive than others. Something for almost every floor plan. #FLEdChat
A5: Hopefully it would be free as it doesn't cost us anything to recognize and honor diversity. I also think it should blend into the surroundings until you notice it and then it should be the shiniest of all the items there. It would be in EVERY store. #FLedChat
Love! A5 #fledchat This is a thought provoking question...because it isn't so much about who would like diversity grouped on shelves. Diversity is already on store shelves. It's getting people to walk down different isles and try something they don't understand or know.

Q6: You have been tasked with developing an initiative to Build “community” in your school or district. Describe your initiative or campaign. #FLEdChat

#FlEdChat A6: Host several open agenda meetings where you invite all stakeholders (students, teachers, parents, administrators, community members, district personnel...) to the table to discuss the needs of the neighborhood/school. But most importantly, be open for change.
A6: It would focus on including all stakeholders in solving school and community challenges. Working together and understanding diverse perspectives and talents will help being people together. #fledchat
Okay so this! I love how you have included so many constituents. More and more I find that the more variety you have helping to make a decision, the more impactful it is. OPEN, definitely. You nailed this! #FLEdChat

Clearly there was at least a little sense of community within the team. Otherwise, it never would have worked. (Yes, I know it was a script.) #FLedChat
A5: I would have to say a collection of Lays potato chips. They come in different shapes and sizes, colors and flavors and each one is appealing and you really want to try it. #FLEdChat
#fledchat A6: Sticking with food theme. like the idea of starting out w/potluck theme to celebrates diversity. Then have a cooking challenge to create recipes that reflect local community...creating our own cook book and maybe restaurants/cafes can carry these local meals/drinks
Finally thought of an A5: A record store. They've been around a ehile and you can find one almost anywhere, but unfortunately not everyone appreciates them. #fledchat
Oh I so like this! I wonder if I could pull off a cook off or a bake off with students, perhaps with the help of parents in order to drive this idea! #FLEdChat
