#DITCHbook was created by Ditch That Textbook author Matt Miller. The chat focuses on innovative teaching ideas and disrupting standard textbook education.
Hello #DitchBook! I'm Craig an RTI Facilitator from Texas, and I'm happy to be moderating tonight's chat on a love of learning! My favorite treat would be dark chocolate. It's healthier, right?
Hey everyone! I’m Dalton - a high school ELA teacher from Plato, Missouri. My favorite Valentine treats take many forms... just need one thing..... #ditchbook
Hey #DitchBook! Matt here, author/speaker/blogger and 10+yr HS Spanish teacher.
I'm in the living room of @MandiTolenEDU and @jasontolen RIGHT NOW!
Fave Valentine's treat: cupcakes? Chocolate? You really can't go wrong.
Hey all my #ditchbook friends! Evan Mosier. Tech Integrationist Lead Teacher from Davenport, IA. Favorite treat would have to be milk chocolate or Reese's peanut Butter cups! Can never go wrong with either!
Hey all! I’m Derrick from TN. I teach middle school social studies and I am a tech coach and my favorite Valentines gift is Starbucks ☕️☕️☕️ #ditchbook
A1 I think I truly fell in love when I had my feet under me and was able to focus on the finer points of teaching (beyond class management, what I'm supposed to teach, etc) #ditchbook
A1: I fell in love with teaching because of my high school physics teacher. You could tell he loved teaching and made learning fun for students! #DitchBook
A1: I’m a first year... and I’ll admit I struggled at first. But around December, I started submitting applications for graduate school. And suddenly I realized that I didn’t want to get in. Because it would have meant leaving the classroom.... That’s when I knew. #Ditchbook
A1: I fell in love with teaching the first time I heard a student say, “Yunno, I never liked history, but you’re class ain’t that bad.” That’s the highest compliment a middle schooler can give you. #DitchBook
A1: My oldest brother was a high school teacher (he's now an AD), and my dad is a computer professor at a local college. Plus, my mom was the town librarian before she retired in April. Teaching and learning has been instilled in me from a young age. #DitchBook
A1: I was a newspaper reporter covering a story at an elementary school. Didn't know why, but I felt TOTALLY at home there.
Talked to my wife (also a teacher) and was convinced.
Left newspapers and went back to school. The rest is history! #DitchBook
A1: I fell in love with teaching at age 15 when I was a camp counselor at sports camp at Fresno State for 20 1st graders for 4 hours a day all summer. #exhausted#ditchbook
I'm sure it was delicious, but until you've visited Davenport and had some of the best ice cream around, from @WhiteysIceCream, you haven't lived! Am I right, @jmattmiller?!?!

A1 I fell in love with teaching that first day of student teaching middle school, when I asked a question and 12 hands went up... pick me, pick me - Love when kids love learning! #ditchbook
A1: October 2005 on a Friday morning at Timbercreek elementary. Volunteered for a second grade class for the adopt and athlete program. Read some books and talked about character traits of never giving up. #ditchbook
A1: I took an education course and was placed to work with a teacher. I walked into that classroom and fell in love with everything about teaching. #DitchBook
A1 #DitchBook
I love learning and discovering new things and as a teenager I used help out younger kids in church. I always had a blast, connecting with kids, being goofy and having fun. So becoming an educator was a natural fit. 👨🏫
A1: Omg... I’ve never wanted to do anything else. My preschool yearbook I “wrote” that I wanted to teach big kids. I truly fell in love when I was in high school and got to teach lessons to 2nd grade students once a week❤️ #DitchBook
A2: *D*... Because I see a strong importance in my school/community in tapping into the individual differences among my students... and teaching them to love and respect those differences. #Ditchbook
A1 Recently passed 5th grade teacher Mrs. Painter who told me after I turned her first assignment that she wouldn't accept mediocre work from me...she believed I could be better 💪🏾🔥👊🏽 #DitchBook
A2: I love tech-laden! We should always start with our "WHY". Knowing our objectives and strategies, but I really enjoy hearing how people adapt technology into their lessons #ditchbook
Example: Going through Walmart with a cart full of hot cocoa, marshmallows, milk, and styrofoam cups. "Must be cocoa shop creativity day. I loved those days." <-- the kid who graduated two years ago. #DitchBook
For sure! I was really lucky. Plus, my middle brother is the business type (he currently works for @LoveGhirardelli), so I admired his work ethic and commitment to his job, so all of those made for an easy decision to start teaching. #DitchBook
A2 tech-laden. It’s the tech that opens the way for me to do all the other parts. I struggle with direct instruction. It’s not *me* and if I can’t be the authentic me then how can I teach? #ditchbook
A2- Creative is probably my favorite. Love seeing the natural creativity of students! Tell them what they need to demonstrate and let their creativity run! #ditchbook
A2: Innovative/Creative. We have got to get them thinking outside the box if they are going to be 21st century capable when they leave the nest. #DitchBook
A2: I for innovative. It is one of my teaching passion to try new things to challenge students. I think innovation in education is what creates the passion to become a life long learner. #ditchbook
A1 I fell in love with teaching when I started doing tech deployment for TGI Friday's - teaching the staff to use the new technology in the kitchen and the front. A coworker told me, "you should be an elementary teacher" and that set me on my new path. #ditchbook
I love C = Creative! There are so many subjects where it can be integrated into, and all students can benefit from inserting creativity in various areas, so that's an easy one for me! #DitchBook
A2: I love the “I” for innovative. I really enjoy finding solid teaching strategies that work and using technology to enhance them in new ways. @Wes_Kieschnick has really helped a lot with this #BoldSchool approach. #Ditchbook

Teaching today HAS to be DIFFERENT than it was when was when we were students.
Also, while routines are great, doing the same thing every day or week is BORING!
Bring excitement into your classroom and be DIFFERENT.

A3 In @NorthJr2 I have seen love of learning enhanced by Ts that care and form relationships. Allow for fun in the class. Spark curiosity. Permit choice. #ditchbook
A3: Students love learning when it is meaningful, engaging, and fun. Hands on is way better than worksheets. I've used play doh, tools, even games like headbandz #DitchBook
A3b Today I watched a writing lesson in @AllisonMillz's class incorporating technology and emojis. Students worked on writing skills, but also used creativity in emojis (and created their own). #ditchbook
A2
DIFFERENT trumps all the others in the DITCH acronym.
If you’re gonna be innovative, creative, tech-laden, & hands-on this means you are doing something different and not doing textbook teaching in your class. #DitchBook
A3c @sarah_rottler uses gamification and badges to get her 1st grade students excited about learning. Students learned about multiple standards across content areas while working in groups and completing a Breakout. #ditchbook
A3: Engaging them with manipulatives, partner work, and technology... always gets them more excited! Also simple things like playing music in the background #DitchBook
A3: Hands on activities where they can solve a puzzle or create something. Also, we're doing #WorldChangers projects, and they love the opportunity to serve others! #DitchBook
Sorry I'm so late. I was trying out the Novel Effect app w/my daughter & she kept wanting to read more. I'm Lisa Marie from Texas. I'm an Instructional Technology Specialist & my favorite Valentine's candy is Cadbury Eggs.(They put them out with the Valentine's candy! #ditchbook
A3: My students love learning when I incorporate challenge, teamwork, and kinesthetics (like making a quiz into a scavenger hunt). They like a layer of #gamification too. Anything that makes them feel like we care enough to go beyond the textbook and worksheets. #ditchbook
A3: Integrating technology and lessons that are engaging. As the captain, @burgessdave says, "If students didn't HAVE to be there, would they still come?!" No way I achieve it every day, but I strive to make it somewhat engaging. #DitchBook
A3: I see so many things teachers do that students love but when you challenge student and give them choice and a voice to compete a task they will love it. #ditchbook
A4: Ummmm #DitchBook obviously!! #edtechafterdark and #elemmathchat are great, too! Love popping onto those to see ideas on technology integration and new ways to teach math! I also love keeping up with my Davenport family at #dcsdpln
A4a obvi anything #ditchbook! Some books I loved as a principal are #LeadLAP, Hacking Leadership, What Great Principals Do Differently, Essentialism, Simplifying Response to Intervention, Learning By Doing...the list goes on!
A4 pt. 1: @GTeacherTribe for sure! So many good tips for incorporating innovative technology into the classroom. Great for tech veterans and beginners. #DitchBook
A3 Building a relationship sets the foundation...then you have to try whatever works...be engaging, keep it simple, lose the routines...#teachebetter#DitchBook
A4: I absolutely love #ditchbook. It's almost as is if it's a part of my Thursday night. I gain so much each week, it's easily the best! I also enjoy #TeachSC when I can join. The @GTeacherTribe, 10 Minute Teacher w/ @coolcatteacher and the @DitchThatTxtbk Podcast are all faves!
When their homeroom teacher comes to pick them up from your specials class and cries of "I'm not finished!", "I don't want to go!" and "Can I do this for homework?" fill the air. #ditchbook
I think we owe it to our students to not be monotonous and boring. We have the best job in the world, and the slightest bit of engagement may be all they need to engage into the lesson. #DitchBook
This is my first #Ditchbook chat but I love it! Right now my favorite site is @wakelet Saving links and ideas to try in one not-so-overwhelming place but being able to get to everything in a couple clicks is the bomb!! #Ditchbook Add me - @AJsTechWorld
A4 Book: @Wes_Kieschnick’s #BoldSchool! I basically use it as a lesson template. It explains why and how to use old ax hook strategies that work with new school technology to truly enhance student learning. #DitchBook
A3 #DitchBook
Student L❤️VE to explore. When they have the freedom to be curious. Try things out and following their interests. That’s where the joy of learning comes from.
(This also one reason why I love #hyperdocs student exploration comes first before T explaintion)
