A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Hi Everyone! I am Rachel Herron! I specialize in AEM, AT Apple Accessibility and Emotional Disabilities! I am pleased to be moderating for the PATINS Project chat tonight! #PatinsIcam
Good Evening All, Julie's here (Orthopedic Access to Curriculum and AAC, AT Team Development). Lover of accessible technology, lake living -we have Bufflehead and Redhead Ducks on the lake! #PatinsIcam
Greetings all...I am Kelli PATINS Specialist of ASD, SLD, Chrome Accessibility, AEM & AT and currently obsessed with Netflix series Schitt's Creek #PatinsIcam
A1: 1st and foremost, it can't be about US at all &/or a personal sell...it's ALL about access FOR the STUDENT #PatinsIcam I don't have to like it but I most certainly have to be OPEN to it.
A1: I am sold on tools that have features I can use to meet needs of Ss. I get sold on strategiesthat are inclusive and provide flexible support for all learners #PatinsIcam
A2: Yes, I love @mstranslator Presentation Translator when it comes to adding automatic subtitles/captions to PowerPoint presentations & its robust options, but I'm finding that Google's captions are much more accurate #PatinsIcam
A2 I tend to be an early adopter and instead of getting frustrated I try to find ways to incorporate new tools into collaborative work so others can see the benefits #PatinsIcam
A2: It was frustrating at a middle school level when they switch teachers every bell for some teachers to encourage consistent use and others not to. However, the proof was always in the pudding when grade time came around! #PatinsIcam

A2: as an early adopter who loves infusing new tech tools I will sometimes have issues with reluctant team members. Need to take small steps and give them some easy ways to try something new #PatinsIcam
A2: yes--trained on a tool that excited staff, then when implemented they claimed it "slowed everything down". I arranged tech support, but they weren't open to a 2nd try--frustrating! #PatinsIcam
If I had a dime for every time I heard those excuses...even from a relative who is a paraprofessional! Needless to say they've come around to our side after a good talking to ;) #PatinsIcam
People bring up the teacher agenda a lot, and there is something huge to be said for that. We can't know what is going to happen and still be flexible! You can have a general idea, but not be POSITIVE! #PatinsIcam
This is also a good time for Ss to advocate for themselves, especially with district-wide, anyone can use it software and resources currently available. #PatinsIcam
Couldn't agree more, Kelli. Especially when some only predict the abuse of a tool before they've even given it a try. Too often they overlook the doors that many tools can unlock for Ss ranging from below to above grade level #PatinsIcam
Well said, Beth. If at ANYTIME the reroute around any frustrations/negatives can be right out of the gate ALWAYS, the better, more productive & the most meaningful. #PatinsIcam Modeling is powerful.
Q3: If you are using a tool widely in your building is there a way for you to share it district-wide? What forces drive this in your environment? #PatinsIcam
A3: SLPs/OTs/PTs are some of the most mobile people in the district. Get them on board & provide them the extra time to spread the tool to all the schools they serve. #PatinsIcam

Q3: I worked in a cooperative where one building had great success with a particular writing tool, we shared to in team meetings and trained reach other #PatinsIcam
With my AEM team last week, one AT specialist showed on student and then they shared how cool it was and their peers got excited and then the Teacher was excited... really fun to hear how that all worked!! #patinsicam
A3: TRAINING. I've seen one too many times of some great apps/extensions/tools installed on PCs/Chromebooks & staff has no idea what it is. It's like a treasure trove of accessible goodness at their fingertips but never discovered or trained on #PatinsIcam

A2: Yes and Yes!! Do you ever get the feeling you are just waiting for people to catch up with you? Some are early adopters and others have a closed mindset. When it’s relevant to people or directly affect them or a loved one- that’s when they get it! #PatinsIcam
A4 I find out about tools and strategies on social media (Twitter and Instagram) at f2f PD like @atiaorlando and from seeing colleagues use it successfully in their classrooms. #PatinsIcam
Truthfully, through the grapevine from colleagues at different levels. Implement accommodations at every level during every stage! Don't leave out the middle schoolers. #PatinsIcam
We hear a lot on many different platforms...I would love to hear more of the fails of implementation, although not wishing it upon anyone but that's real and we learn so much from those type of shares. #PatinsIcam
#PatinsIcam I feel like sometimes this responsibility falls directly on the special educators shoulders (in my limited experience). Making sure every teacher uses it but I don’t know if there’s a way to make every teacher like using certain tools 😂

Hi all. Super late to the party... Jamie from Greenwood... I don't know about AEM to really participate but wanted to lurk for a few minutes to hopefully learn something! #PatinsIcam

Yeah, that's when it comes down to that we have to right to NOT like a tool but that ALL students have the right to EQUITABLE education #PatinsIcam We have ZERO right to compromise that for ANY student & should have appropriate accommodations.
