-
Hi Ruth!! Welcome to tonight!
-
Hi, gang. Jimmy here from Stamford. 5th Grade Humanities.
-
Hi Joel!! What book did you put down to join us tonight?
-
Q1: How do you feel classroom design affects student learning?
-
I finished Booked by today in school. Decided to postpone next book for
-
A1: Engaging classroom=engaged kids
-
A1: Setting always influences learning. Feeling comfortable allows us all to focus and get into a zone where we work best.
-
A1: if the environment doesn't support learning then students won't learn - books needs to accessible, resources avaliable
-
Totally agree and couldn't have said it better!
-
A1. Great article by Carnegie Mellon. Heavily Decorated classrooms negatively impact learning. https://t.co/8D9RkcxSFI
-
I totally agree! I also think that the choice piece is huge - choosing where/how to learn is important
-
A1: Kids should have choice to demonstrate understanding where they are comfortable. Counter, exercise ball, standing desk, etc.
-
Hello all CT area friends! Chris, elementary principal from Greenwich, joining
-
Oooo. I can't wait to read this! Thanks Rob!
-
absolutely. We have books for every student, we need learning materials for all as well!
-
A1: variety of areas for a variety of work
-
Ss need to feel comfortable in their classroom environment.
-
Hi Christopher! Thanks for stopping by tonight! What school in Greenwich are you at?
-
Good Evening Chris. Are we going to see you next Saturday?
-
A1: As long as they are engaged and producing quality work, its acceptable. We must remove confines of what a class should look like.
-
Erin from Stamford! A1: design is hugely important. Just redid my book shelves and Ss said "didn't know you had so many books!"
-
Hello everyone, Sean 4th grade teacher from Stamford.
-
No matter how that comfort 'looks'
-
Hi Erin! Thanks for stopping by tonight! That's awesome and they must've been so excited to read them!
-
Hi Erin! Thanks for stopping by tonight! That's awesome and they must've been so excited to read them!
-
Yay Sean! Thanks for stopping by!
-
I think the choice piece is HUGE!
-
A1: Don't forget to get student's feedback with classroom design. This is hugely valuable and goes a long way to build trust.
-
A1 Changes dynamic. Are all desks facing one direction, indicating one source of learning, or is there a more collaborative design
-
Went to chairs and tables with wheels 2 years ago. Room changes almost daily. Allows for collaborative mobility.
-
it was just interesting that changing the design of how they were displayed opened them up to reading more
-
That's awesome!! THey must love being able to change how it looks to accommodate learning
-
Sometimes its the simple things!
-
I'm getting ready for a classroom library redesign now. Pictures?
-
I also think classroom design needs to be for ALL students not just those few who 'look' like they need it
-
-
Q2: How do your students influence your classroom design?
-
Hi Abbe! Thanks for stopping by tonight!
-
I was fortunate to get a new shelve. Top row are student favorites. Bins are organized by genre. https://t.co/ax0NTUj30n
-
-
How your room is set up on a daily basis affects the mindset of the Ss as they enter the room.
-
-
Create environments where Ss can collaborate and create. Follow-up question: Who owns the classroom?
-
A2: We differentiate lessons, we differentiate homework, we have to differentiate seating as well.
-
A: Students are a huge part of design. They know what works and what they'd like! Just ask!
-
I think it's important to create an environment that reflects your goals for your classroom whether student led or teacher led
-
That is key!! They need a voice!!
-
Oooo...good question! I think both students and teachers own the classroom
-
A2: Everything in the library can be moved around... Ss can move as needed.
-
So important, but often SO overlooked!
-
Sweet set up. I like the concept of favorites & genre specific. I'm creating my "Ultimate Middle School Class Library" now.
-
Students are helping create our makerspace everyday at lunch. Their feedback is priceless!
-
Seating has to be flexible. Especially for those of us who share classrooms. Have to be able to adapt quickly and still make your own
-
-
thank you. It's our graffiti wall where students write the books they've read. We need to update it now.
-
agreed, design has to be fluid and ever changing. We need to move away from old school desks. Too stagnant.
-
My goal for next years classroom library is to let the students help me figure out how to organize it - nervous
-
We also write on everything in our room. Window markers are a must have.
-
I want those rolling chair ball desks - do those even exist?
-
would love to see pictures when it's finished. Good luck!!
-
I nearly bought a kitchen table for my classroom the other day (it was off a tag sale site)
-
Get over the nerves and just do it.
-
project in June?! Let me know how it goes!!
-
-
Do I do it in June for next year or August for that year? I feel like it has to be for the students in the moment
-
Thanks. Books coming in daily. Lots of fun coming up with titles & recs from kids and teachers.
-
We do. From the youngest to the oldest, the slowest to the fastest. The laziest to the hardest . https://t.co/5ek0toihpB
-
-
Create environments where Ss can collaborate and create. Follow-up question: Who owns the classroom?
-
I think has them. Saw them at
-
That would be everyone's favorite place to work!
-
Hahaha...okay! Fine...they are already pretty much in control of it, but I need to tell them they are
-
You should do it with next years Ss. It will be "their" room.
-
True...that makes sense...maybe even start it now for the rest of the school year - to practice
-
I agree! Maybe your current students could help and make final adjustments at the start of next year?
-
I think so! I often have 5 ppl tyring to put books away everyday
-
https://t.co/6CVjT7Wsns - UCONN put these in a new building my senior year. AMAZING for collaboration. Super comfy too.
-
Q3: If you could add anything to your classroom to ensure student success what would you add?
-
I want to add more 'home lighting' - so I don't have to use the fluorescent lights as often
-
A3: A teacher with a growth mindset willing to relinquish control of their class and make design a collaborative experience with Ss.
-
Hahaha -- that's awesome dedication!!
-
A3. I would add 8 TVs around the classroom. For collaborative groups to work with Chromebooks and chromecasts.
-
A3 The furniture MrOrsinosClass just shared. In our dreams!
-
A3: Maybe a few more chromebooks - a place for student supplies - stools for all!
-
I would make all of my desk surfaces and walls whiteboard material. Ss love drawing out, planning ideas. Enhances collaboration.
-
my lights are off a good part of the day. We have lots of windows and sunlight. Florescent lights kill my eyes.
-
That would be awesome! I have students writing on desks with dry erase markers - they LOVE it - they feel like rebels
-
I would love to do that as a project. The possibilities are endless.
-
A3: I want a theater "in the round" for presentations, discussions, and performances!
-
Ditto -- but I have one dark corner -- I envision a light hanging from the ceiling - Tom won't mind?!
-
That would be sweet, Rob. Would allow for some intense gallery walks & changes to old school presentations.
-
-
That would be really cool!! Would the 8 tvs allow for each group to see each other?
-
-
I have to take some pictures of my classroom this year - its quite cozy
-
rarelyhave my lights on unless students request. If I put them on for something they'll get mad & yell!
-
If you haven't signed up for https://t.co/UUzxaiSSmX -you still have time. Over 170 amazing educators already signed up.
-
Q4: Q4: What do you think students need in the classroom (in regards to design) to be successful?
-
something very zen about dim lighting, the Ss see it too.
-
A4: Choice of seating, the ability to move, to stand. Ability to access resources independently.
-
A4: Does SCHEDULE design count?
-
Another question...what's the biggest obstacle you face in trying to make a change to your classroom design?
-
That would be important too....
-
Next step for me is student choice of seating...biggest obstacle is where to keep their supplies
-
A4: Classroom design has to adapt to students, not the other way around. Classrooms should be flexible and provide choice
-
-
-
I think every teacher who participates in twitter chats should get an extra $10,000 for their classroom
-
That would be amazing to have a bit more....
-
Tell them that! They may have some great solutions:)
-

I think every teacher who participates in twitter chats should get an extra $10,000 for their classroom
-
Well... you get $10,000 worth of PD by participating in Twitter chats.
-
This is VERY true and I have learned SO much!!
-
me too. I could use the money to buy books!
-
A4 I wish I had tables and chairs instead of desks! 8th grade ELA
-
