Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion.
As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself.
Remember to always include the #edchatie hashtag in all tweets for the next hour so they cab be compiled in the transcript

CBAs are a Post Primary thing, so wondering if any Primary or Third Level people will turn out tonight?
#edchatie
#edchatie intro: Liam here👋, post-primary science ed background, recently started as a research officer in the University of Oxford but still very interested in what's happening for teachers&students at home - so I'm more listening and asking questions than contributing tonight.
I'm a fan of the CBA (in science anyway) and find students really shine completing them! One issue I have is that they are all planned for same time of yr. Lot of work for students at an already busy time! #edchatie
An absolutely fascinating show on BBC1 now all about 7,000+ schools in England that are now run by private trusts. They're not *supposed* to profit in this role, and yet... #edchatie
Ok - let's begin.
I guess you can see CBAs in the Framework = https://t.co/0Fx1LBo24Y
But most teachers will probably be more familiar/interested in their own subject-specific ones. Check out https://t.co/yKtJPn79IL#edchatie
A short thread for tonight's discussion.
CBAs (subjects do two classroom based assessments, one of which is a presentation) are an example of what happens when someone has a good idea but hasn't thought through how best to implement that idea.
#edchatie
#edchatie not stressed about the CBA's in my subject as not a huge change per say but I do think as more & more subjects/CBA's are rolled out we are going to move away from one of their original intentions - to alleviate stress of terminal exam as so many are packed in together
I was just about to make reference to your whole idea about the five year learning cycle and the CBAs being speedbumps along the way. #edchatie (I'm paraphrasing but relatively accurately I hope!)
I gave my students the opportunity to design their own expts from the beginning of 2nd yr. Gave them limited list of ewuipment and set boundaries. They planned within them. I supervised expts and they wrote it up after. Worked v well! #edchatie
#edchatie Some teachers I talked to while I was in the States were shocked that we had an all or nothing terminal exam esp. with no repeats. Lots of CBA and woe be you if you do not keep up todate with your marking.
My 1st experience with CBAs opened my eyes to the possibility of all students' sense of achievement when given choice and flexibility. I was also surprised at my own bias or perception of what students were capable of. A learning journey for both teacher and students #edchatie
Exactly my thoughts. Can't see why time frame isn't lifted and allow schools to plan them throughout the year when suits them. Keep the 2/3 wk timeframe they need to be carried out. #edchatie
Yes I definitely planned forward for it- with my department initially to ensure that students' experienced smaller blocks of similar learning, with the students by experiencing different ways of assessing and with parents- by informing them of nuts and bolts #edchatie
Seems that communication skills for presenting are needed across the board. Would there be scope to have a separate class just for that, and then they apply those skills within the other subjects? #edchatie
I looked at past CWB titles and formatted them in the 'new' approach. This way I had all the equipment required. Students could research them and come up with a plan. I attended an ISTA event in Louth on CBA which I found very helpful! #edchatie
CBAs are great opportunities for students to show their strengths in a focused and protected arena. Looking at our calendar as I filled it with CBA windows I can see the Year narrowing for opportunities for sport, debates and all of the OALs? #edchatie
Brilliant, thanks Aishling. Sharing that is very helpful - Are there any blogs from science teachers documenting/sharing their CBA process at the moment? Do you know? I feel like I remember someone sharing one on #edchatie but my memory is atrocious.
In tonight‘s #edchatie we’re discussion “CBAs - how are teachers (and more importantly students) coping as each new subject roles out?”
Just on the halfway mark now.
Wondering how schools/students are experiencing them?
And slow internet in many parts of the country! I’m not familiar enough with the 2nd Level system to suggest where it could fit in. I’d have thought a short (3-4 hrs) crash course would go a long way? #edchatie
They will get a statement on their JC record but I don't feel that justifies the work they do. The original plan was to move away from terminal exam by lessening the % of that exam. The opposite has happened with it moving to 100% exam. Missing a brill opportunity here. #edchatie
I am too generous with my likes😆...It would take me an age to search back through them. haha. I do need to be more organised with bookmarking...some day! #edchatie
A move away from 100% Exam is a good move IMO. Apologies if I’m de-railing in any way: carve across #edchatie by chance a little while ago, but it seems more aimed at school than 3rd level. That said, no harm for teachers and lecturers be in same page.
Interested in introducing online safety and well-being to the classroom this year? Keep track of key dates, events and resources to help plan your lessons for 2018/19 https://t.co/WOMoGmWYFX#EdChatie
That move would be most welcome! But not to be at the minute. We'll wait another 10/15 yrs and maybe something will change again... #edchatie#liveinhope
Currently planning an #eTwinning project for my 2nd years to carry out in preparation for their CBA! Great way for them to practice their spoken French and they will get feedback from native speakers . Just introduced idea to them . All very positive towards it #edchatie
Ciara MFL Teacher We all know here what CBA is short for officially. But has anybody heard what the unofficial version is (used by many pupils and some teachers!)? 😉. #edchatie
Outstanding public service broadcasting from @BBCPanorama and @BBC. Our own system is far from perfect, but we are teeming with ethics in school leadership in comparison. #profitsbeforepupils#edchatie
And I hate that I am thinking this way, because I never thought like this when teaching the old course, I know it's just fear of the unknown, and I think that brings me comfort. Its about getting use to being comfortable with being uncomfortable #edchatie
Looking to speak to teachers in ETB schools about opting out of religious instruction and what the new circular means for them and students #Edchatie#JournoRequest
Tonight on #edchatie we're discussing “CBAs - how are teachers (and more importantly students) coping as each new subject roles out?” (with just 15 official minutes remaining)
I hope you fed it back? Good to be honest about your experience. We got some good planning in on the day at #mfl and were much clearer about the spec #edchatie
1/2 Year of cultural heritage so we are doing something on French culture in French and they are doing something on Irish culture in English . Page long in total. Irish student paired with French student . Each give feedback on others project ( language etc ) #edchatie
I find it comforting the learning during CBAs derives from the specifications- as does the learning for AT and final exam. The learning is transferrable and part of the process-with or without percentages...I find it helps to draw out the connections for students #edchatie
The ones I mentioned are all due in Sept 2019, and that should be everything then I think - though I am referring to a 2016 circular, so things could have changed! #edchatie
2/2 then each party will do our their redo what they have written . Once done, they will practice what they have done with other students via Skype . I’m going to try it anyways and if it doesn’t work , I’ll try something else with school I’m twinned with #edchatie
At the time, they had 2 or 3 to do in the space of 3 wks, it was a lot for them. However they enjoyed the process in Science and it certainly showed in their approach to it. #edchatie
I feel like the english exam allowed for students to respond critically in relation to the broad learning allowed for in the curriculum but exam technique will still be a challenge for some students. As it always was #edchatie
#edchatie feedback from teachers not students was that it was enjoyable & manageable BUT huge concern around repeat absenteeism & how those students will cope longterm
We're into the famous five final minutes of tonight's #edchatie discussion on “CBAs - how are teachers (and more importantly students) coping as each new subject roles out?”
Any last ideas, thoughts, comments?
