Hey everyone, Ryan from IL, business & tech teacher, fresh from summer reading and #FBLA summer camp. Ready for some new #gamification plans in the classroom come fall. #xplap
Hey hey #XPLAP! Dwight from the gorgeous Adirondack mountains where I teach 7th grade social studies in paradise on earth. Hope you’re all having a great end of your school year or start to your summer break! As soon as my latest vlog finishes uploading, I’ll share it out!
Hello #xplap - looking forward to seeing many of you at @USMSpark next week and then #ISTE18, until then hope everyone is doing well. Michele, 8th grade ELA teacher in NY, author, blogger, and more.
A1: my newest connection was with people who took risks, dreamed big and really brought it...like I believe. I was terrified. It was more than worth it!! #XPLAP
It has been just over a year since I began to participate, not just lurk in the #XPLAP community. I have been so impressed by how sincerely helpful everyone is, plus how much more I get out of it by participating. It has been a game changer in sooooo many ways. #XPLAP
A1) We got a new teacher this year who does lots of fun things. It was a nice addition to our school. I don't think she's on twitter or I'd put her name #XPLAP
@tishrich@mrmatera I am always happy to join #xplap - it energizes me midweek. Plus, now that summer is closer I am able to stay up a bit later these days -- got to get ready for late nights at these upcoming conferences!!
Thanks! Actually I'm not a teacher anymore. I work at the innovative tech unit for the Israeli Ministry of Education (and please, ENOUGH with the Harry Potter GIFS 🤣) #xplap
A1: Connected with @sherrillknezel and re-connected with @HeckAwesome who helped me grasp the concept and importance of #sketchnotes Some of my students were inspired by them & took better notes! #xplap
A1: The #xplap and #gttribe communities have been my biggest connection, outside of the personal ones made with the students and within my department. #xplap
A1: This year I got introduced to some very special people… One game changer and friend who took me by storm is @MrsCford_tweets Thanks for all you add to my world! #XPLAP
So many amazing chats tonight, but so much tired!!! 53k steps in less than 3 days AND catching up from lack of sleep on Monday night - this girl must get some rest. School’s not out yet for us! #TeacherMyth#xplap
#xplap A1: I always have seen my self as a connector and I have met so many amazing people over the past few years through Twitter. I have really tried to sustain those connections via social media and in person & helps push my thinking, teaching, and learning
A1 Joining the #xplap chat each week was huge connection for me. I'm not sure I could have maintained momentum in my first year of gamification if not for the weekly chat. Too many helpful and inspirational people to name them all.
A1: I have made several connections this year. These connections have inspired me, pushed me, etc. I met @tishrich at CUE during her session. Although I was new to the gamification term, I was already using this in my classroom. Tish opened my eyes to this wonderful world! #XPLAP
A1: On a more local level, the community of educators I work with on a daily basis at SLMS are the most energetic & innovative educators around. Ideas go from nascent emails to full fledged programing in no time. It's incredible! @DCarlisto@artyladymsd@TrishaWickwire#xplap
A1) I've started teaming up with the 9th grade English teacher. Her lessons on the Odyssey and mythology and my Greek unit were a perfect fit. Came up with some cool interdisciplinary projects. wanna do more!#XPLAP
A1: Being at a new school, I made some powerful connections, but my best comes from my division leader @murfcat72 as she really cultivated me into becoming a better teacher this year. #xplap
A1: I was encouraged to make my Twitter account public back in oct/nov. since then I have connected to sooo many educators through ed chats. I have learned many new ideas! #xplap
That is AMAZING -- hoping to return to Israel for a family vacation soon. I did 2 study a-broads there in HS is College, I would love to see the schools now and see what innovative education looks like there #xplap
A1: I'm at the infant stage of gamification, so all the folks I have connected with in this chat have helped me grow in my understanding. Thank you! #xplap
A1 I’ve met some awesome new teachers at my school who have inspired me to start writing again! It has been a nice challenge keeping a daily journal! #XPLAP
So many amazing chats tonight, but so much tired!!! 53k steps in less than 3 days AND catching up from lack of sleep on Monday night - this girl must get some rest. School’s not out yet for us! #TeacherMyth#xplap
A1: the #xplap connections have been amazing. I’m inspired all the time by @mrmatera and @HeckAwesome who have become great friends and @MrPowley and @Slapshot99 have been great sources of inspiration as well
A1: ✨☠️THE ENTIRE CREW☠️✨
I just really joined the Twittersphere this year and began connecting! Wow, what a game-changer! It's impossible to choose just one treasure, I need them all in my PIRATE CREW! #XPLAP
I completely know what you are talking about because this year for me has had some really highs & lows -- I always felt that I could turn to my #PLN for inspiration and when I needed uplifting #xplap
Aw I feel like I've really started to grasp what I'm doing and why... I've been reflecting and writing a lot the last couple weeks #xplaphttps://t.co/KDBMixjyeV
#XPLAP A2 We have created with primary sources speakers to engage our students in the study of social studies. Over the past 5 years, we have had many share their stories with our students. Been blessed to have many return each year. Here are some of our speakers.
A2: Connecting game to learning on a daily basis. Multiple opp to earn XP for demoing learning in a variety of ways! Ss can level up and ultimately earn MasterChef!!! #xplap
A2 I am hoping this will be wide open for me next year because I got a new job as a library media specialist! I can’t wait to gamify my library and help make students lifelong learners! #xplap
A1: like everyone else, twitter has literally changed my life! It led me to a new job that I love and connections that I never dreamed were possible! #XPLAP
Great Segway with Q2 #xplap - if there is no connection, it is not meaningful. We want everything we are doing in our classroom to connect with our goals, objectives & more importantly, our students
A2: This is something I am still struggling with. I tie my powers to science stuff (Oxygen tank, test tube rack, invasive species.. ) and I try to make it a part of my narative, but I could do soo much better. #XPLAP
A2: I just threw together a game for the last couple weeks of class this year. It's a giant scavenger hunt quest, digital tools, clues, codes. Some are class questions, others are purposefully nebulous to get them looking through old class materials & problem solving #xplap
A2: I connect XP constantly to daily games and activities during the year. I am doing a small change on student PD with a chapter from @ShakeUpLearning in the fall. #xplap
A2: I always have a long term goal...for my students to be independent learners regardless of their cognitive/academic level. Then everything i create and infuse in my game is driven by that #XPLAP
When it all falls into place, it works better and is a natural fit. Sometimes the connections are easily to make and others can be a stretch, but there is still a connecting thread #xplap
A2: Outside of my gamified class with narrative, I want to form groups/teams that stick together all term and do challenges Big Brother/Survivor-style for perks. Need to find/make a sweet Head of Classroom trophy... #xplap
I slightly changed the story this year, and included some bad guys. I liked it, but I got really busy the second semster and kinda lost the storyline part. #XPLAP
A2: This video on Playful Assessment shares how I use the game Operation in my class and it makes perfect sense… Check it out! ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH9CXvNccA8&t=8s
#XPLAP
A2: connections exist between side quests and challenges and the items rewarded for the completion of those. For instance, a side quest about Communist laws resulted in a love potion since everyone is supposed to be for the good of the community in Communism #XPLAP
A2 I'm not doing full on gamification, more mini games. But I've gamified my Class Dojo. We now have Point Ninja's and a leader board. Prizes for the top Ninja's #XPLAP
#XPLAP A2 Also added what we call “cultural conversations” this year. Connected with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷& discussed gender inequality and with a class in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 to discuss current issues. Great opportunity for our students to share and learn from peers.
A2 its fun to use former student's content to connect to new quests. Im using last years explorer journals ( some looked pretty legit) in next year's scavenger hunts. #xplap
A2: ☠️✨HOW CAN I USE THAT? When I see something that looks like fun, I try to make a connection to a way that I could use it in my game to make it SPARKLE! I picked up a lot of random things like silly string, sling shots, sticky hands, etc. & used them for mini-games. #XPLAP
This is amazing that you are doing & meaningful for our students. Its like when my Ss get to tweet or Skype an author of a book we are reading. Powerful #xplap
#XPLAP A2 We have created with primary sources speakers to engage our students in the study of social studies. Over the past 5 years, we have had many share their stories with our students. Been blessed to have many return each year. Here are some of our speakers.
I like having bad guys, because it helped cut down on the kids always trying to destroy eachother. Instead they could pause their rivalry to face a common enemy. #xplap
A2: I put myself out there! I message, interact, and try to share ideas with my PLN. These connections are 100% connected to my classroom game. Met @WiseDad_Games through Twitter. A complete stranger offered me tons of advice and even play-tested my game! Awesome guy! #XPLAP
Thats how I started last year. I took the good and grew it over the summer then went all in. It is a work in progress, but the year end reflections fron the kids gave let me know it was worth it. #XPLAP
This is such a cool idea! I'm thinking about adding the @GlobalReadAloud to my course next year to get students connecting with other areas of the nation & world. #xplap
I see five groups myself, but I hope to come up with some different ways to incorporate the "dreadsheet" premise with a bunch of different activities. It's ambitious, but it'll be worth it I think... #xplap
that was my plan last year, then I had a kid. Kinda hurt the time for working on class stuff (but that's ok). Probably starting next week to work on next years class #XPLAP
A3: Reminds me of the Time's Arrow game. You start a set game, that is picked up by generation and people in different places at the same time. Each generation connections a level that will unlock to a championship years later. The journey is the best part. #xplap
A2: I love using Snake Oil for Ss to create products for a character. Using the Game Snake Oil in the Classroom - Mrs. Cford Vlogs - Episode 2 - I'll Show You https://t.co/ioDVjoFnEo#xplap
A3: Made me so happy that other Ts at my school jumped into gamifying this year with great success! Would be so cool to partner up and have challenges cross curricullarly and be judged for one another too! #xplap
A2: Since I'm not a T now, I take in everything I learn here to make my Alternate Reality Platform. You can still get the idea, even though it's in Hebrew. https://t.co/iX3KGuH6Qq#xplap
Started in 2013. Teaching a class over the 1980s and wanted to connect with a MTV VJ to talk about its impact. Mark Goodman answered and became our 1st. Since then, we use Twitter, Email and phone calls to reach out. #XPLAP
A2: Checking in super late. We tied scientific assessments to how heroes would permanently fix the problem and how villains would make it worse. An idea @tank2023 and I will expand on next year. #XPLAP
They pretend to be too cool but deep down they really want to have fun with it too. If you are authentic with it and are passionate they will buy in... #xplap
A3: A difficult one to answer, as I don't know many other business teachers attempting to gamify. Definetely like the idea of bringing older students back as alumni, but with other teachers and their games? Hmm.... #xplap
The game flipped a switch in my students. They went from "over it," done with school, to emailing me, & other teachers on the weekend about the game. It's worth it! #xplap
a3) I'd love to have some sort of challenge against another science teacher who was covering similar material. It would also be cool to do a side quest with someone from another school, but not sure how to get that to work. #XPLAP
Been applying game mechanics before but didn't know anyone else who did. Having bought XPLAP book and discovering #xplap community has opened doors for me! I felt quite sad that I hadn't known about this in the past but it's never too late to connect and learn. I'm very excited!
A3: I have always wanted to do a breakout with @mrmatera via google hangouts or connect our websites together and do side quests from each others websites #xplap
A3: A summer meet-up would be awesome! I’d love love love to see what everyone here is doing. More importantly, I’d love to actually play some games and relax with people who share similar interests! Just an idea! #XPLAP
A3: I have been brainstorming this with a number of different teachers. If nothing else you teach the same content the kids could make games for others to play. There could be side quests with races to see which class earns more XP per capita...so many ideas! #XPLAP
A3: Would love to do some global collaboration on a game or scavenger hunt of something. Maybe I can rope @mpilakow to build something together to bring our Ss together regarding a breakout, break-in or a literary quest #xplap
A3: Thinking about the brief scavenger hunt quest I created these last few weeks of school and the digital, physical mix of clues. Working with another teacher & their elements could make for some interesting cross class digital breakout scenarios... #xplap
A3: Oh, wow, like a shared universe? That would be so dope. Like if a whole district is doing something and the heroes and villains were interacting some how. Or if you set something up where one group did impacted what another group found. #XPLAP woah...
I've always wanted to do the @globalreadaloud, but was always too scared to dive in. Tackled @NaNoWriMo last year and loved it, so I think that might be the next goal. #xplap
This is such a cool idea! I'm thinking about adding the @GlobalReadAloud to my course next year to get students connecting with other areas of the nation & world. #xplap
Love the idea of doing a “Raid” so who can do more quests from another class site. The most done does damage to their realm. Man that would be cool! #XPLAP
@tishrich if you ever need taste testers or judges, I am happy to do that via GHO as Ss are preparing and prepping the amazing dishes they make in your class!! #xplap
#xplap We have been fortunate to have speakers live in the building as well. Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 and Rivers and Rust. Can’t learn this in a textbook.
Especially if it were things like acts of kindness, or reveiw tasks or something like that where the task is the same, only the content changes. #XPLAP
I hope everyone at #XPLAP will make it to the #HiveSummit and also help lead others to the hive…

A2: It took me forever to think about this, but it is because I am thinking about what I want to do next year. I want to create a game that strengthens my Ss to really come together as groups (they sit in tables). #xplap
Me and my partner are designing this platform to support Ts who wanna do #gbl#gamifciation. It has a leader-board, shop, map etc. The interface is still at the beginning, AppSmashing @Wix website and @GoogleForEdu apps. #xplap
A3: could you do digital escape rooms that lead to a page that contains challenges issued by another class? This could have videos as clues, etc. #xplap
A3 Crossover quests! It would be really cool to have students collaborate on a side quest or battle. So many great comic book crossovers. Would take some planning, but you could definitely collaborate with other Ts on a story line and connect w tech. #xplap
digital breakout that the teams try to beat the other school sounds fun, then it could be about lots of different stuff, or almost a semester review thing. #XPLAP

A3 YO! I want some more Non-Playable Characters for my "comic" delivery system!!!! I need pictures of people doing normal stuff in front of a blank wall (diff color from your clothes) so I can make you all characters! #xplap. This is how!!
https://t.co/ss6QBhww1q
I know, that is AWESOME that you are going to be a tech coach. So excited for you, your school has big shoes to fill when it comes to finding your replacement #xplap

I was one of 3 teachers mentioned in a Valedictorian Speech this afternoon. Saif life was like the puzzles in my breakout games. I was surprised and smiled at the connection! #XPLAP
That could be sweet! I love the scavanger hunt idea. We could share the results in a google folder or something so all the kids could see what others have done. #XPLAP
Just doing stuff. No costume needed but, well, have fun with it! I can make the person a "sticker" and use the pic tobdeliver narrative, content, etc... #xplap

So...like if we have 5 classes and they all had to work together to achieve something...or if we could get them all to take the assignment at the same time and even in different rooms, see how the events occurring one place would impact the others. #XPLAP

That's awesome! And yeah, I can tell the students are going to remember the Golden Skull for a while to come. It's wild seeing the difference approaching things a bit differently can make for students. #xplap
#XPLAP Here is our story with Mike Eruzione. Incredible individual! Great story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. @davebangert wrote the story.
https://t.co/9jMOLVu7SN
A3 pt2 Not the same type of gamification, but @PaulDarvasi talked about his collaboration with another teacher where students only discovered part way through that another class was playing. That would be mind blowing! #xplap
Linked spreadsheets. Its the same concept as my Dreadsheets. Use the importrange function and the classes can be on different sides of the country and still see real, time updates. #xplap
Or even just design a game that the other schoool has to play. It could have a "raid" aspect so that if the kids can't answer it some of their XP goes to the other school. We could even have curses and powers bouncing back and forth between schools. #XPLAP
The scavenger hunt/breakout quest I created for my students has a few of the folks on my team asking if they can get in on it next year. Making it a true collaborative & cross-curricular activity. #xplap
#xplap A3 We were fortunate to visit 10 countries this year via Skype and Hangouts: Russia, France, Canada, Brazil, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Israel, Argentina and Mexico. Ss learn geography but love the cultural talks we have with their counterparts.
I did this with my team this year, and it was great. We all came up with material to contribute to the digital escape room, and I put it together. Our grade all participated at the same time. #xplap
Lets figure this out... I have a "multi-verse" concept next year. Each class is a different superhero universe... It would be fun to,have an "Earth 2" set in a different school... #xplap
Thanks @mrmatera for an eye-opening chat. If anyone wants to collaborate with an Israeli class in a game, let me know and we'll organize something. #xplap
#xplap Thanks for letting me share our North White (Indiana) story. Thanks the everyone who shared their ideas. Constantly looking for new ideas to share with our teachers. We are all in this together!
We could make the side quest a citicen science project from @SciStarter. It would be fun to see the data coming from people we knew but in different locations. #XPLAP
