Host of coming back next Tuesday!
-
Q1: How do you teach your defense to produce turnovers?
-
Josh Ragsdale, HFC South Garland HS, Garland, TX
-
A1: Position specific drills and we also employ a turnover circuit.
-
A1. Turnover circuits. Teach fundamentals, when/where/how to rip, punch, and recover.
-
I buy every kid involved in forcing or recovering a turnover an Ice Cream Sandwich. Has become a challenge for kids
-
A1) consistent teachin & preachin, it has to be a everyday focus, ripping, punching chopping. Go crazy when they get 1,
-
Ryan Higgins. WRs coach at Newman Smith HS in Carrollton.
-
Are the when/where/how coupled with proper tackling techniques?
-
Do Nice! How many sandwiches have you bought this year?
-
A1: circuits, Indy time, put trash can on sideline at 50 and after every forced turnover in practice, put the ball in can
-
Q2: What has led to your team success in creating turnovers?
-
What is the significance of the can?
-
A1. Preach it's a mindset. We don't call them turnovers. They're takeaways. On incomplete passes, we pick the ball up/secure it.
-
At Riverton, IL Coach Hambelton bought shirts, we had kids yelling "That's a SHIRT" and the ball was still in the pile!
-
A2) TO circuit, added strength & speed. Last year most of our turnover were from closing hard and fast.
-
A2: So far we haven't been very successful in producing them...in the past, teaching fundamentals and pursuit to the ball
-
This is a great idea to incentivize takeaways in practice! https://t.co/Ks7JcFMtti
-
-
offense loses that ball for the day, it's a trophy for the defense!
-
Yes. Always secure tackle first. One drill involves 3 people. Ball carrier/profile tackle/ rip https://t.co/EnYxhoX9nY
-
-
Are the when/where/how coupled with proper tackling techniques?
-
Q3: How do you teach ball security to your team?
-
As a Bears fan, Peanut Tillman was the best ever at securing a tackle while forcing the ball loose. like a super hero's talent
-
A2. We give locker magnets for creating or recovering. Takeaways. Guys get to see their lockers fill up.
-
The best kind! https://t.co/7SYqdoZFte
-
-
A2) TO circuit, added strength & speed. Last year most of our turnover were from closing hard and fast.
-
A3) high tight, chin the ball. ball under chin, let the facemask protect, elbow tight to ribs, pressure pts plus mind! Mind on $
-
our guys play both ways but love this for the scout team!
-
A3: We teach proper tuck and hold of the ball when running in the open field, and when running through traffic
-
A3. The bi product of being aggressive on defense. We re trying to take the ball away every play. Offense learns to protect it.
-
Q4: What would a ball security circuit consist of as part of your practice?
-
RBs get up with the ball or you are just the ahole who fumbled, they play guard
-
Lovies teams were big influences on how I view turnovers. Tillman was the best. https://t.co/pTVwbnTFE3

-
A4) a1 bags, lt & rt arm, agilities, switch on zig zag. Push ball across chest, reach on top, chin it.
-
Got my first coaching job this year and haven't lost a game yet!! Godley HS
-
A4: I would include securing the ball from being ripped, running through the blaster, and proper tucking
-
A4) cont, lateral over bags, other RBs stand in spaces behind bags, trying to get ball out, I point working back n fourth,
-
Great! Everything is better when you win!
-
Sneaky double dip, working ball security but my other backs are learning to get the ball out. They were ruthless.
-
Q5: How do you teach your team to respond after a turnover?
-
A5) High alert! We aren't running hitches or dive, so don't think they are.
-
A5: They can take the ball, We can take it back. Time to cash in
-
A5. Hopefully the defense didn't score. But Always trying to remind them that they stole the ball but now it's our turn.
-
A5: If we caused it, respond with aggression...if we lost it, the expectation is to get back to work
-
Q6: How do you use turnovers to create opportunities for your offense?
-
A6) we blew the game open last week, KO kid ran untouched, popped it out at 15, 14 points 30 secs.
-
A2: Swarming on defense creates hits from all angles. easier to jar balls loose when carriers attention is on other defenders
-
A6) I jokingly tell the kids, it's really hard for their offense to score on us, if we have the ball.
-
Q7: How do you create an offensive/defensive mindset to cause/prevent turnovers?
-
A6: We look to catch the defense hanging their heads and on their heels...we want to pressure the d and get them to break
-
A7: I think it goes to the emphasis and excitement you create around getting a turnover & the discipline when you lose the ball
-
A7: coming in on the last question, but it starts in drills, RB's do up downs for fumbles, QB's do push ups for interceptions.
-
A7) Swift cruel punishment for any fumble at anytime, don't care. Never ok, ever. Fumble it, put your hand in the dirt.
-
Great job tonight! Thank you for being here this week!
-
-
-
Have to relate fumbles, ints, holding, etc with something negative to let them know it's unacceptable https://t.co/AQvD7qCfGs
