TNedchat is a way for educators in Tennessee to share thoughts, resources, and information. The weekly chat is moderated by Jessica Warner (@jessawarner) and Samantha Bates (@sjsbates).
Let's get ready for #TNedchat tonight as we talk about DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS- pregame question: What are your thoughts on the following quote: “We live in a world where we unfollow, unfriend and unlike instead of understand. - Tim Allen (Let's talk more in 35 minutes!)
A1: Active means you are intentionally using the internet to share personal information and passive means the collection of your cookies, others posts, etc that you are not trying to do but it happens #tnedchat
A1: I think of passive being the information that follows you without you realizing it (medical records, phone records, etc) and active being the digital information that you deliberately put out. #TNedChat
A1: For me an active digital footprint is someone who is routinely monitoring &updating their online presence. As educators, this is so important. It keeps us up-to-date w/ current events & allows us to share best practices. #TNedChat

A2 take control of what is posted by posting more stuff. Make whatever else that is out there lower on the search by drowning it with new awesome stuff #TnEdChat

Q2: I was featured in a story about education by the #NYTimes last April. Before the story came I reviewed my online presence w/ a colleague. I set some accounts to private & made sure the rest were on message. You are your own PR. #TNedChat
#TnEdCHat The Streisand effect is a phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet.
a2 It really depends on how internet famous you are as to how you can "clean up your presence"- the average Joe can delete things and not worry about it...politicians, murderers and actors...it will follow you forever #tnedchat
A3: Our school considers it best practice not to follow students back and to be mindful that the things we share support the beliefs and image we want to portray #tnedchat
A3) We do have one but it is mostly common sense, which isn't so common. It's all about if you want it posted on the front page of the paper...or just THINK. #TnEdCHat
It's a murky area. I'm free speech all the way, but I want it to be an open discussion between admin and staff. Unfortunately a lot of our admin do not understand technology enough to facilitate this discussion. #tnedchat
I kind of push back against that, I never follow/friend students first but if they ask I accept because I see it as a way to model good digital citizenship on social media to them. I also see it as accountability #tnedchat
I have been a friended and unfriended as an admin. I didn't care... I go by the rule that the kids in the youth group could be reading this what do I want them to see. #TnEdChat
A#4 - YES, a thousand times YES! If we are having them use technology in the classroom we should be teaching them about appropriate use in all areas of their lives- not just being reactive when they do something wrong #tnedchat#offsoapboxnow
I use my Facebook for family & friends, very little work ppl. I follow my admin on Twitter, and allow them to follow me so that they can see all of the good work I am doing in our school. As an art teacher I often feel it's hard for me to be seen by those in charge. #tnedchat
A4: YES, and YES but not sure anyone else at my school does. It surprises me how many people don't realize you can pull up their youTube playlist easily. #TNEdChat
and someone is telling your story- you are actually modeling ISTE standards for teachers by using these platforms to share your school room story in a positive way. Kudos to you! #tnedchat

A4) YES digital footprints and digital citizenship go hand in hand. The students must know this. I think back to 15 years ago when I told my students to get respectable email address for college applications not hotpants212@hotmail... #TnEdChat
A4: I teach 800 students art but we do have discussions about the web & I model my use of it by showing them how artists have responded to our class work online #TNedChat
A5: Got my hand slapped so to speak about an e-mail reply I used once - that was before I understand the implications of all caps but I guess it was a bit strong. #TNEdChat
A2: Digital footprints never wash away. Ever. But maybe they can be meandered so far beyond the shoreline that it would take a trained scuba diver to find it. #tnedchat
A5: Many times. Nothing is better than a face to face conversation- technology can be interpreted differently by different people but I believe it is important we use the platform for the greater good often #tnedchat - even if you make a donut for a president and it causes probs
A5 I think we all can say we have been misunderstood or maybe regret posting something at some point but I believe we have a duty to use these platforms and SHARE, grow and fail forward #tnedchat
A6: A year and a half ago we lost our sweet dog for a full week. I flooded social media with her photo and a plea to help us and it brought our sweet Secret Pup back to us! Social media reposted, retweeted and jumped on board. It was a beautiful thing! #tnedchat
A6: I like to think like an evangelist here - "If I change the path / life of just one . . ." I have done what I set out to do. My goal every 9 weeks when I get a new group of kids. #TNEdChat
A6) My wife needed to go to Finland for a research project, I was in #FinEdCHat she was able to connect with them and met them face to face. @apuustin#TnEdChat
A6: You took my answer. What's even more exhilarating is when you get to meet them F2F for the first time, especially after following on twitter for a long time. #TnEdChat
A8: I do. I believe in the power of social media to become a better educator and to help others on their path as well...being easy to find and sharing is important. I consider myself an OER! #tnedchat
A8: Yes, been in the process of that for the past couple of years and it has improved my teaching through like connections and tons of resources. #TNEdChat#loveMyTribe
