#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Hello #LearnLAP
Welcome everyone.
Tonight we are talking, "How to Foster a Growth Mindset Like a PIRATE!" Please introduce yourself, tell us your role and a success you recently had learning something new.
Hello #LearnLAP
I am honored to lead the ship tonight. Melissa, 7th Grade Science T from Central NY and #FormativeSummit presenter.
This year I am using @Schoology as my classroom online platform for the first time.
Hello. My name is Susan, and I am a 1st year teacher from IL. I feel like I am learning a lot this year which is good because that is the only way to grow. #LearnLAP
Hey #learnLAP crew (it’s been long overdue!) Mike here from MI teaching 6/7 Science. Learned some new strategies for implementing @NGSXproject from the wonderful @richbacolor
Hi Everyone! Deanna from DE! English T 10-12. I finally got a Chicken Bacon Ranch Casserole recipe that I can eat on Keto, and it’s delicious! #LearnLAP
Hi #LearnLAP! I’m Kristen from PA, and I teach 6th grade physical science. I’d like to say that I’ve had success learning how to walk again, but pirates DO have a peg leg. 😂 I’ve always been PT’s nightmare patient, which taught me how it feels to be a nightmare ss in school.
I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois. I set my kiddos up with IXL last week and I couldn't be more excited to be meeting the individual needs of my students in math and ELA! They're enjoying it as well (no homework!). #LearnLAP
Q1 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together towards a common goal.
What is one lesson, activity, or project that you do (or could do) that has students working together to meet a common goal?
Hello from the New York Catskills. Sherri @ThirstyBeesNY - teacher, admin, trainer, and my newest endeavor in which I am learning something new: what it's like to be a substitute teacher! (Hint: it's actually a BLAST!) #learnlap
A1 This year I will be incorporating several STEM challenges that require teams to work together to complete a task. The first one we did was to build a tower that could hold a golf ball for 5 seconds. It was a lot of fun for all. #LearnLAP

I have finally learned to accept that sometimes people are never going to change and you just have to stop letting it bother you. #LearnLAP
Hello #LearnLAP
Welcome everyone.
Tonight we are talking, "How to Foster a Growth Mindset Like a PIRATE!" Please introduce yourself, tell us your role and a success you recently had learning something new.
Hi all! Megan here! 5th grade teacher from IL! I recently learned how to make a great chicken rice soup! Just in time for me being super sick this past week! #LearnLAP
A1 This year I will be incorporating several STEM challenges that require teams to work together to complete a task. The first one we did was to build a tower that could hold a golf ball for 5 seconds. It was a lot of fun for all. #LearnLAP
A1) I’ve adapted a @breakoutEDU lesson that I use to lock Ss out on the first day of school. They work in teams to “break in” even before they enter the classroom on day 1. #learnlap
A1: I started to do mystery Skype. Thanks @hayes_melisa and @amycooper100! My students work together to figure out the state. It is a learning process, but that is my focus this year. #learnlap
A1 - I'm starting to plan my next science unit as a new 4th grade teacher & I'm excited to be able to teach ENERGY again because we do an Alternative Energy Debate that is collaborative rather than competitive (but we still have a winner). Everyone helps everyone! #LearnLAP
A1: I love @breakoutEDU and @GooseChase! But even simple projects like Stem challenges or group Rube Goldberg machines are awesome to watch. My fav is watching ss show off their ideas. Shows off personalities you don’t always see!! #LearnLAP
A1- My favorite collab project we do all year is when I take my juniors to work with the 4th graders as they prepare their career presentations. My juniors get to teach the kids how to present and help them develop their projects. #learnlap
A1) I’ve adapted a @breakoutEDU lesson that I use to lock Ss out on the first day of school. They work in teams to “break in” even before they enter the classroom on day 1. #learnlap
Hello, #LearnLAP! Jumping in a little late after making my wife a special birthday dinner. We are celebrating Ashtober all month. College GOVT prof from Conroe, TX.
A1. When I have all the Ss gathered together, each is given a string attached to a ring and they need to minipulate it to stack up as many cups as they can in the shape of a pyramid without knocking any over! #learnlap
A1: I believe in what I call "authentic" PBL. This involves having students work together to solve a real problem that matters to them either in the community or in the world. The final product is then in the form of a presentation to an authentic audience. #learnlap
A1: Had a discussion today about rebranding assessments. We got to get feedback from small groups of Ss about the effects standardized testing (amongst other school related maladies) has on them as young people. VERY insightful. #LearnLAP
Q1 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together towards a common goal.
What is one lesson, activity, or project that you do (or could do) that has students working together to meet a common goal?
A1 Having Ss become proficient in science discourse/talk and how it is different than everyday discourse/talk while making it equitable for all. #learnlap
Q1 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together towards a common goal.
What is one lesson, activity, or project that you do (or could do) that has students working together to meet a common goal?
Q2 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together in both calm and stormy seas.
What can we do as leaders to foster and support positive interactions when difficulties arise?
A1) I love having students doing group activities or stem activities during Morning Meeting. Tomorrow my 5th graders and a 3rd grade class are going to make pumpkin candy catapults #LearnLAP
Hi! Kanako joining in for the first time from Vietnam. LOVE PIRATES (and trying to foster Growth Mindset). Recently (currently) learning new and improved strategies for supporting ELLs through ELL Teachers Toolbox by @Larryferlazzo. On-going read :) #LearnLAP
A1: Not student collaboration, but I am working with a Develop Psych prof doing a series called Soul Sessions to get Ss and faculty to learn about world faiths that make up less than 3% of US pop each. #LearnLAP
A2 Clearly outline the task, have roles assigned before the task so everyone has a job to do, and be present during the process to help when needed. Team work days are the day to grade papers. #LearnLAP
by the time they get to us they have had a lot of people tell them how to feel, but not ask them. What a powerful convo to have in honoring their voice #LearnLAP
A1 Learning to work together and collaborate can be a challenge for my littles. I provide time each day for students to work together building and creating. #learnlap
A2: I think that open communication is key. I also think that it is important to truly seek to understand. We are a team, and we are truly in this together. We all need somebody to lean on! #LearnLAP
A1) I love providing opportunities for Ss to share their ideas with each other, through whole class or small group / partner discussions. I think the more they hear each other's thoughts and ideas, the more they'll get to know and hopefully learn from each other. #learnlap
A1b: in my GOVT course for future Ts, Ss are running all@of the lesson development and presenting in groups with active learning strategies, objectives, and assessments. They get content and pedagogy experience. #LearnLAP
A2) We can practice and teach positive responses to situations and mediate student issues in a calm way. Teaching kids how to work in a group or team is important #LearnLAP
A2 - I teach my students CONFLICT MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, Choose Kind, and Think Win-Win. My kiddos do a great job of handling disagreements kindly, or apologizing for overreacting when they don't! #LearnLAP
A2) I believe we need to be proactive and anticipate that there will be disagreements. Rock, Paper, Scissors from #learnlap and compromise are great tools to get those convos started with Ss.
A2 Always be positive but also don’t let negativity or difficulties just slide—Talk it out as a group. Kids need to learn how to work they bumps in the road more than anything else we teach. #LearnLAP
Q2 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together in both calm and stormy seas.
What can we do as leaders to foster and support positive interactions when difficulties arise?
A2: Positivity is a choice. With every challenge we have the opportunity to view it as a wall or an obstacle to be overcome. Our attitude and mindset will affect how others respond. Choose wisely. #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal
A2: When faced with conflict, we have to remain positive. Escalating the drama will never benefit anyone on a team. Look for solutions that will be a "win" for all. #LearnLap
A2 For littles...give them time to practice and learn how to get along, compromise...guide them but let them experience the struggle and learn. #learnlap
A2: we must have prepared before the storms with relationships, procedures, and expectations. The solid foundation prepared ahead of time creates a safe space in storms. Had a student in crisis today that came to me. #LearnLAP
A2: Positivity is a choice. With every challenge we have the opportunity to view it as a wall or an obstacle to be overcome. Our attitude and mindset will affect how others respond. Choose wisely. #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal
A2 Model the importance of the significance of a “Be Still” moment. It’s ok in stressful or negative moment to stop, wait, regain focus, and once composed move ahead. #learnlap
A2: Happened today. New batch of Ss arrived; some ready to learn, some with an agenda to create chaos. Had many 1:1 conversations highlighting their strengths and potential to be great. Hopeful for tomorrow. #learnlap
Q2 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together in both calm and stormy seas.
What can we do as leaders to foster and support positive interactions when difficulties arise?
A2 For littles...give them time to practice and learn how to get along, compromise...guide them but let them experience the struggle and learn. #learnlap
My collaborator and I had that discussion today about the value of these sessions. We created them to combat the vitriole and hyperbole that are so prevalent right now. #LearnLAP
A2 Clearly outline the task, have roles assigned before the task so everyone has a job to do, and be present during the process to help when needed. Team work days are the day to grade papers. #LearnLAP
A2: Make sure everyone has an equally important role. When disagreements arise, I like to give them the opportunity to work it amongst themselves before intervening as a mediator in leading them toward a solution. #learnlap
A2- Providing our Ss with the means to be successful when difficult situations arise. Open discussion about how to handle those situations. We are always surprised when Ss respond in a negative manner...but have we provided them the support to be successful in those situations?
A2. Open communication with your Ss is important. Clear and concise directions. Every S in classroom has a job or responsibility, S need to be accountable for themselves and their learning. #learnlap
A2 Its important that students learn to struggle at times and how to deal with “rough seas”. Guiding and modeling situations and providing some mechanisms on how to calm the storms will help. After, let Ss try to ride it out before intervening / providing add. scaffolds #learnLAP
A2) When difficulties rise, give them the chance to express themselves and understand their words and actions affect one another (in positive and negative ways) and then work out a solution together. What can we do to fix it? #learnlap
Q3 #LearnLAP
Growth Mindset is based on the belief that anyone can get better at anything with sustained effort, hard work and practice.
What is something you do in your classroom that encourages students to keep working at learning until they “get it?”
A3 I don't grade practice ever, just provide feedback where needed. I allow retakes and redos. I don't refuse reasonable requests from Ss, if they can explain how it will help them to be successful. We are about learning, not "grading" #LearnLAP
YES! I was honest. I told them that WE in education have conditioned them to "Sit still. Be quiet. Don't share your feelings," in spite of the fact that their voice matters and has great value. The retraining process is tough. #LearnLAP
A2) When difficulties rise, give them the chance to express themselves and understand their words and actions affect one another (in positive and negative ways) and then work out a solution together. What can we do to fix it? #learnlap
Q2 #LearnLAP
Pirates must be able to work together in both calm and stormy seas.
What can we do as leaders to foster and support positive interactions when difficulties arise?
A3: I allow the students to make corrections. Some parents were happy that I was doing this because it helps the students learn from their mistakes. I value a growth mindset especially as a 1st year teacher. #LearnLAP
A2) With any leadership, not just between Ts and Ss, leaders should be open to hearing constituents' thoughts and opinion. Have an open discussion. Be a facilitator between two parties when conflicts arise, not THE problem solver. #learnlap
A3 It’s kindergarten...so pretty much everything. All students are working at different levels. Ss share their work and we celebrate the journey together. #learnlap
A2 Model the importance of the significance of a “Be Still” moment. It’s ok in stressful or negative moment to stop, wait, regain focus, and once composed move ahead. #learnlap
A3: Independent station work- for literacy and math. Opportunities each day for Ss to explore hands-on activities to master skills. As Ss practice daily for short bursts, they get better at it... then station is phased out and newly challenging stations are phased in. #learnlap
A3 As a principal I encourage Ts to try new things, be bold, and know that I have their back and expect some things to flop. I want them to be comfortable getting uncomfortable. #learnlap
It's common to be blunt when difficulties arise, but that doesn't always inspire others to move towards growth mindset. However, establishing a common language (to describe issues/emotional reactions) normalizes these types of convos making them less of a threat. #learnlap
A3 Any assessment. It’s about progress and seeing Ss build toward mastery. Never settle for anything less. 99% is great but we can’t give up on that 1%. #learnLAP
A2: we often expect Ss to work together but don’t help them with the challenges that arise in the process of collaboration. I encourage Ss to develop norms and expect that challenges will arise and encourage respectful language when probs arise #learnlap
#LearnLAP A3: I don’t leave them stranded without a life preserver. I check in frequently and give them activities that they can at least try and makes thinking very visible.
A3. My co-teacher and I give the students ample time to practice skills. We encourage a great deal of partner and group work. It's also important to allow students the opportunity to revise tests. They need time to take risks and grow. #LearnLap
A3 Embracing redoing things until they have mastered the standard... and being flexible on how they demonstrate that mastery. Not talking about grades but focusing on the learning. #LearnLAP
Q3 #LearnLAP
Growth Mindset is based on the belief that anyone can get better at anything with sustained effort, hard work and practice.
What is something you do in your classroom that encourages students to keep working at learning until they “get it?”
A3) Our school pushes growth mindset. We have had assemblies, watched videos, and in the classroom push teachable moments. I love nominating Ss for leader of the week and giving brag tags for perseverance! #LearnLAP
A3 - I teach my kiddos MARBLE THEORY each year (explained in #LearnLAP & summarized in my #FormativeSummit session). I believe that we all have the same innate ability to learn & grow, but it's how we allocate our marbles, put forth effort & improve that determines our successes!
A3: Independent station work- for literacy and math. Opportunities each day for Ss to explore hands-on activities to master skills. As Ss practice daily for short bursts, they get better at it... then station is phased out and newly challenging stations are phased in. #learnlap
A3) Encourage students to help each other. Sometimes, having constant concentrated support from the teacher can be discouraging for the Ss because they think they are receiving support because they CAN'T DO IT. Help from another Ss is more well received in some cases. #learnlap
Y’all... this is a RARE Monday night! I hate to miss out on the awesome in #LearnLAP and #tlap but I’ve been up since a little after 4 am & have been going at it since then. I’m going to bed! GN friends!
A2 - I teach my students CONFLICT MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, Choose Kind, and Think Win-Win. My kiddos do a great job of handling disagreements kindly, or apologizing for overreacting when they don't! #LearnLAP
Q4 #LearnLAP
"Process-focused feedback" is essential for Growth Mindset and improvement-based learning.
In what ways do you give feedback to students that is based on the process and mastery of learning, not just “grades?”
A1: Working together to meet a common goal...food drives for those in need, preparing a selection of songs and performing them at a retirement home, a school production! #LearnLAP
A4 I do a lot of practice digitally now, so the feedback is automatic. I also give personalized feedback specific details about the whats and whys. I find a quick chat to be helpful and immediate for improvement. Numbers do not equal feedback #LearnLAP
A3. Sometimes when we are building structures such as catapults! Ss, sometimes have difficulty, but we find our way through the problems and learn to work them! #learnlap
A3: Allow them to make mistakes, encourage them to keep trying, occasionally provide a "hint" to reignite their curiosity - but also giving them time to step away for a brief time to rest, reflect, re-evaluate, and refocus. #learnlap
Love this - transparent and vulnerable. Same message from @TaraMartinEDU that is so wonderful. I have learned the power of readily admitting when I am wrong. #LearnLAP
A4: When my students present projects to the class, I use a rubric, but I don’t fill in the numbers. I focus on comments and questions. Ss get the rubrics back with just feedback and then they use a reflection protocol. After their reflection is when I enter the grades. #learnlap
I told my parents at Open House that they will not see as many grades in SchoolTool as assignments in Schoology. The focus is on feedback, not grades. They were very supportive of it #learnlap
A4 Always focus on learning/application and even when they meet standard having them reflect on the process and ways they might improve their work next time #LearnLAP
Q4 #LearnLAP
"Process-focused feedback" is essential for Growth Mindset and improvement-based learning.
In what ways do you give feedback to students that is based on the process and mastery of learning, not just “grades?”
A4 So much of science through @NGSXproject in my class is through teacher but mostly student feedback on modeling. LOTS of discourse through whole class, small group and partner talk. #learnLAP
A4 - We are completely grades-free in our classroom, but we still complete assignments, assessments & activities. I give feedback to students to help them improve &/or use it to determine next steps in their learning. We focus on improvement, rather than mastery. #LearnLAP
A4 Ss must learn how to track their own growth and monitor their progress towards self made goals. Feedback should be a shared discussion on that progress with evidence they have and you have towards that goal. When the can relate the work they do toward the goal! #learnlap
A4) I like to check in with groups during projects and on longer projects check in multiple times. I don’t like to give too many ideas but have them work through and brainstorm as a group to work through issues but I give ideas to help when they are stuck #LearnLAP
I give feedback on projects we're working on during the day. I like to guide them to resolve problems they may be having with their work. They need to learn to think things through and come up with possible solutions. #LearnLap
I like to provide feedback in real time is with the "show call" technique. As Ss are writing, I will showcase some of the Ss work under my doc cam & discuss it w/ the class. Afterwards, they make adjustments to their own work. #learnlap
A4: I teach in station learning, and I do not grade every question of every station. I take notes on a spreadsheet when I talk to each ss and see what they are thinking, but never put a final grade on the paper. #LearnLAP
I have decided to let Ss come back to me and explain short answer questions on exams to show me they know the content and to get a #DoOver on assignments if they can prove they now know it. I find this is so rare in college, even though we should be all about mastery. #LearnLAP
A1 Grade doesn't mean much. Specific feedback does. I make sure I talk with / listen to Ss to gain their insight on their assignment. Compliment with what's & why's and what, why, how to improve toward their goal #LearnLAP
We have a mastery learning system, so students are getting feedback relative to mastery of a targeted skill or set of skills on an assignment. Before students can get a grade in PowerSchool, they must complete a substantive reflection form on the assignment. #LearnLAP
Q5 #LearnLAP
Brain research shows that all brains are capable of learning new things, at any age.
What do you do in your classroom to create Active Learning experiences to help students make those neural connections?
A4) I like to check in with groups during projects and on longer projects check in multiple times. I don’t like to give too many ideas but have them work through and brainstorm as a group to work through issues but I give ideas to help when they are stuck #LearnLAP
A3: I have decided to let Ss come back to me and explain short answer exam questions to show me they know the content and to get a #DoOver on assignments if they can prove they now know it. I find this is so rare in college, even though we should be all about mastery. #LearnLAP
A5 I try to use a variety of digital, hands-on & verbal tasks.
For States of Matter there is EdPuzzle Video, Phet Sim/Formative Smash, Google Drawing, live action act out and Flipgrid Video. Multiple modalities to solidify connections #LearnLAP
Q5 #LearnLAP
Brain research shows that all brains are capable of learning new things, at any age.
What do you do in your classroom to create Active Learning experiences to help students make those neural connections?
A4) I remind myself to always view the ELLs I teach with a growth mindset, not the deficit model. They CAN do a lot. Love this infograph by @ValentinaESL#ELLsCAN#learnlap
I'm doing a session with other amazing educators at #NCTE18 this year on the power of face-to-face/in-person grading with students + what their discourse can tell us about their beliefs, values + writing processes. Getting students dialoguing about their work is vital! #LearnLAP
A4: Conversations! I always focus on the positive and then I use questioning to help them determine what areas to improve. Playing "devil's advocate" works sometimes, too - but you have to know your students won't be offended or discouraged. #learnlap
A3 We model content. So, modeling mindset is important too. I tell my Ss when I failed and when it's hard, and they see me talk and work through all that #LearnLAP
A5: In the Social Studies classroom, activity must be the norm. Simulation, debate, mock trial and discussion seminar are critical. This semester I am instituting a teaching event where the learners create an full period lesson for their peers on a passion subject. #learnlap
And sometimes they just need to think for themselves. They have to try something even if it isn’t always going to work. We have to get out of Ss wanting to do it right and instead move to where they are ok with making mistakes and learning from them #LearnLap
Have to leave early #learnLAP with the youngest up and a shaky WIFI connection upstairs. It’s been fun and great chatting again with many familiar (and new) faces.
A5 I always like to get them doing something thought provokingly creative that ties into the content—directly or indirectly—and creates a mental memory to attach info to. Today I covered the invention of writing so we started by playing the telephone game. #LearnLAP
Q5 #LearnLAP
Brain research shows that all brains are capable of learning new things, at any age.
What do you do in your classroom to create Active Learning experiences to help students make those neural connections?
Ok all, especially @_on11 and @Rdene915... someone needs to create an 830 chat on Monday night. Going to try to stay awake for #tlap because that is my chat, but yawwwwwwnnnnnnnn.... whoa going to entertain me until 9?!!!! #LearnLAP
I think that a “do-over” can really build a S’s confidence as well as build that relationship which will in turn build their capacity to learn and grow. #LearnLAP
A3: I have decided to let Ss come back to me and explain short answer exam questions to show me they know the content and to get a #DoOver on assignments if they can prove they now know it. I find this is so rare in college, even though we should be all about mastery. #LearnLAP
This is great! Most of the feedback we give should be in the formative/process-oriented part of an assignment when students can use it to revise + grow immediately. Every student has a right to timely, meaningful feedback they can use! #LearnLAP
A5. Active learning experiences are hands on activities and experiments that Ss have to complete themselves! Form a hypotheseis, Make observations, data, results, discussion, etc, where they are making judgement calls with their eyes, working with hands, moving around! #learnlap
A5: The greatest successes and victories we have observed have taken place at engagements where there is a "hands-on" component. We are attempting to add in more of these activities to supplement the software/web-based projects. #LearnLAP
Q5 #LearnLAP
Brain research shows that all brains are capable of learning new things, at any age.
What do you do in your classroom to create Active Learning experiences to help students make those neural connections?
A3 We model content. So, modeling mindset is important too. I tell my Ss when I failed and when it's hard, and they see me talk and work through all that #LearnLAP
Q6 #LearnLAP
Growth mindset is rooted in the 21st Century Skills of Critical thinking, Problem Solving, Risk-taking, and Perseverance.
What are some ways you help students develop and establish these skills in themselves?
A5: Movement around the classroom as we reinforce concepts, even take it outside the room. Also incorporate diff learning styles. We move, we sort, we draw, we create, we explore, etc. #LearnLAP
So true. When I taught middle school, it was a guarantee that they would turn on you when you were trying to pretend to be something you weren't. #LearnLAP
It's part of a larger process to flatten power dynamics in the classroom + to teach students how to engage in vulnerable reflection, which isn't an innate skill. Using feedback as a method for building trust + relationships is really underrated + undervalued. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@MrsAsztalos, @MrMBlanks, @NGSXproject
A5 Engage Ss in lessons that connect them to anything they enjoy outside is the classroom and that can be hands on! If they love doing it on Saturday with friends they will probably love doing it Thursday with 25 friends and remember it. #learnlap
A6 Give them multiple chance and opportunities for success. Give them complex and multifaceted tasks, and don't do all the work for them. Make their brains work to figure things out, but always provide a safety net for those who need it. (copy of notes, retakes) #LearnLAP
Thank you for this! On behalf of teachers everywhere, creating a space that is empowering for innovation and risk is more valuable than anything else you give them. #LearnLAP
It's cool when students take over as the discussion leaders in a classroom + are responsible for the creation + maintenance of a discourse community. Leaving that space for student voices to rise to the top is vital + it requires shifting notions of authority. #LearnLAP
A6) And always asking Qs that encourage critical thinking instead of mere instruction following like "What do you want to do?" "What can you do to change/fix/improve that?" #learnlap
A6; provide opportunities for them to practice these skills. STEM challenges and allowing them time to explore rather than fill out a worksheet. Amazing the questions they ask and conversations they have when you do this!!! #LearnLAP
I am a future education teacher and found this chat to see what current teachers are doing in their classrooms. I liked your response to A1. There is so much pressure on students of trying to achieve the best possible grade, Ss need to feel more than just a grade. #LearnLAP
at a basic/crude level, we pursue a nearly impossible task, say, inductive logic to identify the meaning of a new literary term. we record our struggles. we study more examples and notice progress. when everyone achieves mastery, we celebrate #learnLAP
Q6 #LearnLAP
Growth mindset is rooted in the 21st Century Skills of Critical thinking, Problem Solving, Risk-taking, and Perseverance.
What are some ways you help students develop and establish these skills in themselves?
A5: I believe making authentic real world connections helps to make neural connections. If students see in-class work outside of class they can take their learning further. Personal connections are also important - whether to past or present events, or to future goals. #learnlap
A6 - I try to embed 34 different 21st Century skills into as many lessons as possible, teach those skills when possible & ask the kids to try hard at improving in these areas. Reflecting & Self-Assessing using this tool is HUGE: https://t.co/Q3o8VxFhey (Explained in #LearnLAP)
Perseverance- do it even if it’s hard. We have to have high expectations for Ss and stop letting them quit everything because it’s hard or they messed up. Find the balance between empathy and high expectation. It’s not one or the other. #learnlap
A6 Perseverance- do it even if it’s hard. We have to have high expectations for Ss and stop letting them quit everything because it’s hard or they messed up. Find the balance between empathy and high expectation. It’s not one or the other. #learnlap
A6: The key to developing student efficacy in problem solving is to give students the tools and time to do it. They also must pick the problems. #learnlap
A6: We make space for it daily. Borderline exhausted from today trying to emphasize to Ss that their voice matters. We can't accept a "defeated posture" w/out sharing our views. Too often, Ss just passively accept the status quo. Trying to teach that it's OK to speak. #LearnLAP
Q6 #LearnLAP
Growth mindset is rooted in the 21st Century Skills of Critical thinking, Problem Solving, Risk-taking, and Perseverance.
What are some ways you help students develop and establish these skills in themselves?
A6. Give Ss the chance to learn the skills, then use those skills in order to solve problems. They need multiple opportunities to learn to utilize these skills! Mistakes will be made, they problem solve, and continue on learning! #learnlap
A6: The key to developing student efficacy in problem solving is to give students the tools and time to do it. They also must pick the problems. #learnlap
I use Harkness Discussions + Philosophical Chairs assignments to get students thinking about key ideas + essential questions. Here, they get to sound themselves out, practice active listening, and grow their speaking + listening skills. #LearnLAP
Absolutely!! Grades alone can lead to inequities as well. I'm actually going to training next week called equitable grading. I'm looking forward to it. #LearnLAP
Q7 #LearnLAP
In a Growth Mindset classroom, students need to be Empowered to take risks and make mistakes.
What do you do (or can you do) in your classroom to encourage students to take risks on a daily basis?
A6(2): One of the best ways I have found to encourage critical thinking is to give “creative constraints.” Creativity actually comes when loose parameters are set. Watch your students innovate inside that constraint. Watch them break the constraint if they need to. #learnlap
A6: Let students choose a problem to solve - something that matters to them. Let them research what's been tried before and whether or not there was any success. Let them use this knowledge to come up with an alternate solution. And then guide them on the journey. #learnlap
A2: stop. Take a breath and let every one relax. Be @OldsJen mindful! There is no reason to push through unproductive learning. Stop. Breathe.Listen. Love. Learn. Repeat #LearnLAP
Agreed- Making that connection is so important. We need to make learning meaningful & make sure we go past the surface level connection so they understand the “why” as well. YES!, Making that connection to their life outside of school is crucial. #LearnLAP
A5 Engage Ss in lessons that connect them to anything they enjoy outside is the classroom and that can be hands on! If they love doing it on Saturday with friends they will probably love doing it Thursday with 25 friends and remember it. #learnlap
A7 Provide opportunities for students to stretch themselves and expect all Ss to grow in some way. Ss are also more willing to take risks if there is not a "grade" attached. Targeted feedback is helpful, numbers are not. #LearnLAP
A6: Let students choose a problem to solve - something that matters to them. Let them research what's been tried before and whether or not there was any success. Let them use this knowledge to come up with an alternate solution. And then guide them on the journey. #learnlap
A4: I give them space to get feedback from me & other Ss. We reflect on their lessons, poetry slam where they can develop their own voice and sure it out (including in a workshop), and we respond to discussion posts in @Seesaw. Also work on processes of HOW to answer Qs #LearnLAP
A7 - The best way to encourage student risk taking is to empower them to make decisions freely, without asking permission from the teacher & then being supportive when things don't work out. Show appreciation for their attempt & give feedback for the future. #LearnLAP
A6: Educators need to move away from the old model of teaching. We may not be able to cover the entire curriculum, but it essential to allow them time to problem solve and reason. #LearnLap
A7: I give 2 main rules in some activities. Rule #1- you must have a purpose for what you are doing. If you can explain it, anything goes. 2, it must be safe. This allows ss to relax and practice trying and failing without worrying about breaking, failing, etc. #LearnLAP

A1: concerts and performances always win this category! 😉🎶💕
Community Service Based projects bring students together like wild fire! Because students are amazing civilians when we get out of their way & let them get to work! #LearnLAP
A6: Let students choose a problem to solve - something that matters to them. Let them research what's been tried before and whether or not there was any success. Let them use this knowledge to come up with an alternate solution. And then guide them on the journey. #learnlap
A7: Provide opportunities for students via open-ended responses. Life isn't binary, and learning shouldn't simply be about the right answer vs. the wrong one. #LearnLAP
A7: Biggest takeaway from today, if we just added some aspects of gamification into our learning spaces, kids would love coming to school. When you get multiple chances to be successful, and there is no penalty for failure, positive risk-taking will increase. #LearnLAP
Q7 #LearnLAP
In a Growth Mindset classroom, students need to be Empowered to take risks and make mistakes.
What do you do (or can you do) in your classroom to encourage students to take risks on a daily basis?
Right on! Grades are often really noisy + don't mean that much because their loaded down with all sorts of compliance-based measures rather than skill-based assessment. It's also hard to understand what a "90" or an "A-" really tells you about yourself as a learner. #LearnLAP
A7 Oh, I make mistakes all the time. On purpose. Scout's honor. Seriously, though, I show them drafts of my writing and ask for feedback. I admit that I need their help to succeed. I want them to see me struggle, screw up, and seek help #learnLAP
A7. Model taking risks. If Ss see the teacher trying new things that don't always work out, then they will be more willing to try! Encourage them to take risks and try new things! Be that kid! #learnlap
A3: questioning & getting up to dance. The brain needs a break sometimes! Sometimes the answer is at the tip of their tongue... I think 💭 we know the feeling! #LearnLAP
A7) Provide scaffolds. Example: sentence starters for Ss reluctant to participate in discussion. Work with them to write down what they are going to contribute down so they just need to read it at first. Then slowly release them to independence. #learnlap
The idea that students should talk to other students is huge. The Stanford Longitudinal Study shows that dialogic interaction with another person is extremely significant to a students' growth. This is one of the reasons I started @Skyline_WC. #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/f7iWir6pse
A7: Model what that looks like. For example, a few times when I realized a lesson just wasn't working, I stopped what we were doing, admitted to the class that the lesson was a bomb, and then included them in helping to make a new lesson. They always loved that! #learnlap
A4b: Also have implemented @peergrade for them to get feedback from other Ss before turning in papers and @Flipgrid with other educators in our book study to track our own innovative implementations. #LearnLAP
A7: To encourage risk taking in learners, give lots of low stakes practice and in the moment feedback. Develop protocols to guide students as they give feedback to each other so that it is effective and positive. Make sharing and reciprocal teaching the norm. #learnlap
Q8 #LearnLAP Last Question!
Growth Mindset is ultimately based in the Power of YET! Everyone can get there, it just takes more time for some.
What will you do tomorrow in class to encourage your students to have a growth mindset?

A8 Praise 2 Ss who have been working really hard in class. They haven't reached their full potential YET, but they will get there. Start with one conversation at a time and build on that. #LearnLAP
A8 I will remind my 700 Ss the power behind resilience during announcements and this months principal read aloud I plan to read one about the power of yet. #learnlap

What will you do tomorrow in class to encourage your students to have a growth mindset?
A5: Ss teaching all lessons for one of my courses and getting feedback from each other to improve their next lessons. Have a Poetry Slam, Souls Sessions series to learn about other faiths, & special guests, etc. Also use retrieval practice. See @cultofpedagogy for info. #LearnLAP
You definitely won't last very long in teaching (at least not happily) if you take yourself too seriously to laugh at your own mistakes + share vulnerability. #LearnLAP
A8: Tomorrow students in my Geography classes are reviewing gradeless feedback from their recent presentations and applying a thinking routine to develop passion questions to explore in the area of culture. #learnlap
