#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
Welcome to #5thchat Please introduce yourself (State and Grade Level) and give us a GIF that tells how your are doing at this point in the school year.
Tonight we are talking about Purposeful Planning and its role beyond a lesson plan. Q1 -What do you need more of to be able to prepare your best lessons? (besides time) #5thchat
Progressions of standards. We are using #mathinpractice this year and it has made teaching as planning for math so much easier! I know what my students need and where we are going. #5thchat
We always have the three questions to guide us... what do we want students to learn, how will they learn, what will we do with those who already know #5thchat
There will always be moments that catch us off guard and lead to spontaneity and procrastination. Q3 What kind of purposeful front loading do you do to be prepared for those moments? #5thchat
Q3 - For me my student relationships was my front loading. If I had students that struggled with certain things or in midst a circumstance I would be sensitive to that in my planning. I.e. snacks, additional materials, maybe even a different lesson #5thchat
Teaching is a team sport. You count on the grade level before you and the one ahead of you counts on you to prepare students. Q4 What role can we have in helping redirect teachers during planning and PLC mtngs that don't find planning a critical component? #5thchat
#5thchat - for sure! A LOT of discussion comes out when I ask "What questions do you have" instead of "Does anyone have a question?" I also encourage students to answer each other's questions. I don't want to be the only "teacher"voice in the room.
Whole-small-whole framework when planning and to ensure I get to the consolidation part. Carmel Crevola’s oral language prompts help me to ensure I help the students learn how to listen and respond to each other instead of just me. #5thchat
#5thchat - Honestly one of the BEST ways to see something differently is to get out of your own classroom & visit someone else's! Kind of like what Twitter does for us virtually. Inviting a teacher to see something you've carefully planned out might help!

There is a direct link between planning and classroom management. Q7 - What are some behind the scene, critical planning pieces that do to help relieve stress from disruptions and keep the flow of a lesson? #5thchat
A5. #5thchat - my colleague and I use end of year testing data to look for trends. We noticed year after year students struggle with Geometry and in our curriculum this typically comes last or is "left out", so this year we flipped our curriculum and started with this topic!
A6 #5thchat - I would LOVE to hear suggestions on this one! I struggle to remember the good & ditch the bad. I've started a Podcast to help me remember :) #learnreflectrepeat I plan out my year on a Google Doc (calendar style) & attach Daily Agendas so I can look back at those.
A7 #5thchat - STUDENT-LED Classroom all the way!! This has been a game changer. Shout-out to @PaulSolarz for his great ideas! #learnlap If you haven't, go read his book - now!
