The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
"Caught in the Moment" https://t.co/gVICgLj6S6 Kids are not going to remember the touchdown they could have scored or the block they happened to miss nearly as much as they will remember how the surrounding adults made them feel in the process. #iaedchat#educoach#leadership
Hi! Lauren, K-5 Instructional Coach, Indiana and co-moderator for tonight's chat. My #eduwin is looking at student evidence in coaching cycles! #educoach
Hi-Carrie from Indiana. My #eduwin is going to the buildings across the district and hearing about their progress and successes during our Systems to Systems meetings. #Educoach
A1: we use progress-monitoring data required by the state of Iowa. Weekly reading PM tasks for students below proficiency level. Also reading assessments that measure use of phonics and mastery of high frequency words.
#Educoach
We like the reports it offers. I like the Instructional Planning reports for kids ready for enrichment or needing intervention. Pros/Cons to anything... #educoach
Honestly, not a lot of it is actionable. We are actually looking to streamline for next year. Spending inordinate amounts of time meeting with salespeople. Do you have any suggestions for math and reading assessments? #educoach
Through a computer platform the state subscribes to with the FAST assessment (Formative Assessment System for Teachers). Kdgn uses letter sounds task, 1st and 2nd grade use CBM passages.

A2: I'm at the district level, so it really depends. Some principals look for trends. More often, PLCs look at their data and plan interventions. The scores are often tied to goals in the teacher eval system. #educoach
A2: We have "data huddles" that include IC's, Principal, School Improvement admin. Then we determine best way to share and analyze data with Ts. #educoach
A2: classroom Ts need to do this for their class of Ss as well as with grade level teams to look for patterns as a whole; coaches and admin look at school wide data to drill down into learning gaps #educoach

A2-When I was a principal, we had mid-year tier 1 data meetings where the entire staff analyzed trends, celebrated successes and determined next steps. #Educoach
A3: still a work in progress, but looking at priority standards, learning continuums in NWEA, & F & P to get a read on strengths & areas to grow. #EduCoach
A3: We use the Instructional Planning Reports from STAR to plan interventions or extensions for students. Other reports give us trends for growth or proficiency. No consistent protocols for data, yet. #educoach
A4- As long as improvement planning is anchored in student learning that student achievement will increase. We have to ensure decisions are based on data and not hunches or feelings. This process also supports system effectiveness! #Educoach

A5: Attending PLCs and asking questions like "what do you notice?" and "what do you wonder?" Sometimes they just need help finding the reports in the systems. #educoach
That was a thing we took a look at with a grade level team this week -- finding the reports, and noticing the information included that informs instruction! #educoach

A5-Looking data has to become a systematic process that Ts do regularly. Mid-year is a great time but it has to happen more often to inform instruction. #Educoach
A6: I worry about that a lot. If you aren't going to use it, why are you testing? Sometimes it's data for the system, but ideally teachers can use it, too. #educoach
A6: part 2
When you can, shortening assessments to the minimum number of questions needed to assess a standard can give teachers data, but use less time. #educoach
A6: We can easily give assessments and not use the data. That is why is it CRUCIAL to put practices in place that make sure Ts have opportunities to look at data for their class, their team, and the school #educoach
A6: State requires weekly PM data on those below proficient level. But we are striving to use this mandated data to inform instruction, not just jump through a hoop. #educoach
A6 Re-examining our assessment processes is so important. Some questions could be: What are we doing? How are we using the data to inform instruction? If we are not using the information, should we be using instructional time to give the assessment? #Educoach
A6: New ELA series has numerous assessments built in for variety of purposes. Ts have sifted through them to make wise choices -- which are worth the time? Which can be omitted to preserve time? #educoach
A5: I assist Ts by modeling this year round and not just mid-year. Coaching cycles are one way of reflecting on data. I also think having data and evidence as a piece of PLC's is also very important. #educoach
A7: Last year, I collected data on if teachers were using Number Talks (which I'd modeled in the fall). I found about 25% were not, so I knew more PD was needed. (Haven't surveyed yet this year) #educoach
A7: This year the IC and P set up the grade level teachers into intervention partners/triads. Ts are to meet and use data from intervention groups to plan for instruction. Ts record their main topics in Google docs. #educoach
A7: One way I collect data is by the by getting a percentage of the number of teachers who sign up for Coaching Cycles. I also do a pre/post assessment for the coaching cycles to see if it made an impact. #educoach
I did. I offered an optional article group after school and a session at our district conference. I'm still modeling them this year. And encountering more questions. I think I need to share a "step by step" sort of thing. #educoach
That does help a lot - focus on students instead of teachers. I found more would agree to that, but I'm not sure how to advertise and enroll more. #educoach

Q9: Student ownership is KEY to S success. As a Kindergarten teacher, my Ss had goals that they could communicate to anyone who came into the classroom. We celebrated their successes and we built a growth mindset using data! #educoach
A10: I will push harder to engage in data work with PLCs. I will also look at the mid-year district data for areas I can support.
Great ideas shared tonight! Thanks everyone!
