👋🏼Hello! Excited about #ohedchat chat & anything by @maverikcrq on #DOKs! His scholarship has served as my North Star in this area. 💫Serve as an Instructional Coach for Porterville Unified in the Central Valley, CA.
Hey, #ohedchat, got lost in @rainbowrowell's Fangirl, lost track of time. I teach amazing kiddos how to write better in SW OH. Excited to talk more about DOK tonight!
DOK doesn’t mean there can’t be differentiation. A great benefit is that Ts can increase the rigor for students according to their own pace. We can then gather what works best and help Ss achieve new levels based on THEIR needs, not ours. #ohedchat
A1 it’s about sustaining critical thinking, building a mental stamina. Not a one-n-done or get through standards at breakneck speed. It’s about making connections and engaging creative mindset. #ohedchat
A1 DOK is so much more complex than just regurgitating Blooms' verbs. DOK involves the complexity & the process Ss take discovering their understanding along the way. #ohedchat
A1: All of our Ss deserve an education that facilitates the type of learning that will challenge & allow them to demonstrate their depth of knowledge & transfer it to different contexts. Never underestimate our Ss potential. 🎆 #ohedchat#equity#dok
A1: using & increasing DOK levels of activities, teachers can teach students to adapt to challenges, work cooperatively and solve problems; develop #futureready skills #ohedchat

I'm not sure. If DOK 4 is making connections beyond a text, does it mean you've mastered the standard of using text evidence? Maybe not. Depends on what you're trying to master, maybe? #ohedchat
A1: I’m just going to say it...There is no disadvantage to acknowledging and using DOK...if we plan to use it appropriately and end up at a higher level! #ohedchat
A2: Definitely the length of time it can take to cover a particular skill. We may feel like we need to just “move on already!” But it will pay off in the end. #ohedchat
A2: It is TOUGH to understand and I constantly grapple with it! It also takes very strategic planning that includes deep knowledge of content and even deeper knowledge of kids. #ohedchat
A2) Making progress towards the deeper levels of learning. Worrying about things like “covering” content. Becoming a better at asking questions. #ohedchat
A2: Definitely the length of time it can take to cover a particular skill. We may feel like we need to just “move on already!” But it will pay off in the end. #ohedchat
A2: It can be a challenge to get Ss to leave their comfort zone & try new modes of learning, communicating, & demonstrating. Some Ss are so good at the game of school that we have to push them to go deeper. Once they get there, it’s so worth it! #ohedchat
A1: One of the challenges is the misconception that there is a progression. Ok to start @ a DOK 3 in which students are engaged in inquiry or DOK 2 predicting-these processes may ignite the 🔥 to learn #DOK 1s which are also Impt. #ohedchat
A2. DOK allows for Ss to get a deeper understanding in learning compared to just memorizing facts. It takes loner w/ steps and time, but Ss gain in depth understanding of topic. #ohedchat
I think the more we look at exemplars for DOK 3, the better we can understand how to plan more meaningful experiences for our kids and go beyond the “testing” DOK mindset. #ohedchat
@MrGartin@bethctech Just had a conversation with my 11-year-old today about how knowledge is good, but what we DO with it is even more important. Not enough just to know. #ohedchat
A2 the challenge is that at times understanding DOK makes some people feel like they need to be on DOK level 4 before they can implement => over thinking it #ohedchat

A3) Bloom's is about the behavior (cognition and content). #DOK is about the conditions - What exactly must the student demonstrate and communicate? It sets the expectations & stipulations #ohedchat
I agree. But yet, majority of dept. Ts want lists of vocab words on tests. Instead, I'd prefer to teach them to infer definitions. We'll get there someday! #ohedchat
A3 Bloom's focuses on the verb (i.e. describe, analyze) while DOK focuses on what comes after the verb. You can write DOK 1, 2, and 3 tasks all with the verb describe #ohedchat
Agree! Perhaps it was @maverikcrq but read somewhere about the difference between something that is hard and cognitively rigorous. Memorizing all of our US Presidents is hard but comparing their presidencies is demands more cognitive rigor. #ohedchat
Bloom’s Taxonomy is more about the action (verbs). DOK is more about the setting and situation in which they are applying learning. It goes beyond the verb. #ohedchat

A3: DOK allows for complex answers w/ a variety of thought processes/answers. HOT is more focused on right vs. wrong w/ a specific answer. Ss access higher level thinking/problem solving with DOK. It’s ok to use DOK & let Ss struggle! That’s where they find success! #ohedchat
Mary Davis, Director of Special Education, Illinois. I'm joining different state #edchats to get more responses to my dissertation survey on Sped Tchr Prep

Sped tchrs pls take my survey and/or share my link with other sped tchrs! #ohedchat
If HOT stands for Higher Order Thinking, then I disagree. Revised Bloom's has creating as the highest tier, which does not have a right/wrong ans. But I could be wrong. #ohedchat
A2: As an IC I have observed this challenge and the urgent need to shift the focus to evidence of student learning. As Teachers we could be asking a DOK 2/3 type of question but students are working at a DOK 1. #ohedchat
A3: DOK is building to more complex thinking, climbing the ladder. HOT is that high level thinking. Maybe HOT is the goal of DOK? Maybe not. Just thinking aloud. #ohedchat
Hey there #ohedchat ! Sorry I can’t join you, I’m just returning to Columbus after spending a few days in Dallas visiting @SouthwestAir and @Coppellisd
A3 DOK level 4 is similar in that it requires a creative mindset to reach that level. Creativity development is often ignored or misunderstood, but it is what separates “now”-ready learners from college/career ready. #ohedchat

A4: DOK is about the process of instruction and learning while assessment helps Ts better understand where the Ss are and if they are being successful. #ohedchat
A4: Instruction and assessment are a marriage. They depend on one another in order to become better. DOK allows for both. It also allows for Ss to learn, adjust, demonstrate, and redo if needed, all important steps for Ss when learning and growing! #ohedchat
A4. Both because your recalling facts, using the info. in mult. steps.,using reasoning w/ seq. of steps to dev a plan, using conn. and ext. w/ high cog. demand. #ohedchat
A3: Still learning but context seems to be critical with respect to DOKs. Thinking about "what comes AFTER the verb" & how w/DOKs context is everything especially the ability to extend & transfer learning.👇🏼#ohedchat
A3: Also think it's important to examine what can also come BEFORE a verb. Imagine the variances in DOKs when task moves from an "I" (Independent) to a "We will be able to... (Collaboratively) & vice versa #ohedchat
A4 instruction. We are so quick to assess everything we need to slow down and focus on instruction. If we let assessment always drive instruction, what happens when we talk about mindsets that challenge the assessment status quo such as creativity, and open-ended opps. #ohedchat
A5. ❤️❤️❤️ it’s great for our diverse learners because it gives them a chance to build on what they know - and show that their own way! No “topping out” #OhEdChat
A5: Different levels of thinking and complexity allow for different levels of knowing and doing. Ss can be engaged by showing what they know and do best and can gradually build to a higher level. Confidence. Boosted. BOOM 👊🏻 #ohedchat
A5: Oh wow! It’s ideal! So many ways to show what you know! So informative for a teacher. I can plan for instruction based on your DOK. I can also keep the stress level just right for you. Not too soft, not too tough. #ohedchat
A5. It helps our diverse learners in multiple displines by DOK-3 and DOK-4 as they learn why the know. can be used and how else the know. can be used and applied. #ohedchat
A5. 1 way it allows for ongoing non-evaluative measures to help the Teacher determine mastery and/or non mastery. What needs to be revisited! DOK allows 4 a progression w/in the instruction and the content #ohedchat
A5: DOK allows us to meet Ss where they are at, to work at their pace & ensure they are taking to steps toward learning and understanding. No conveyer belt learning here! #ohedchat
A5 DOK respects all levels of Ss learning & to be clear, I am not saying it just respects below grade level Ss. It allows Ss in the process of learning of any concept to be along the continuum of understanding, for mastery. #ohedchat
Facilitated a PD on DOKs at my school site. Love the "Cookie Model Video" and shared cookies w/everyone! 🍪 We were amazed with how deep we could extend our learning about cookies all the way to a DOK 4. 🤓 https://t.co/G2pqKHkafG#ohedchat
You can start the deeper learning experience for #DOK by asking the Ss what are the words, phrases, and terms they don't know or understand in the objective & phrase it as a question - DOK-1. #ohedchat
A6 Give Ts the DOK experience, in a faculty meeting setting. Let us extend our knowledge, rather than require us to be passive spectators. Maybe a pineapple chart, to collab? #ohedchat
A6: It's going to be important to develop a common understanding of DOK and how we have to think, plan, and organize. Otherwise, we're not on the same page. #ohedchat
A6: the greatest resource we can receive is support and guidance from one another. Continue to encourage each other and push Ss to try, make mistakes, and try again. How powerful would school be if that was the case? #ohedchat
A6: Facilitated a PD in which mixed PLCs reviewed different disciplinary/scrambled questions & tasks & sorted them by DOKs. Great debates & discussions! #ohedchat
A6: #observe me always helps me improve my practice. Nothing like a peer review to get you on your game and open you up to new thinking and suggestions. #ohedchat
