A1: Definitely a solid check out for a bit. But then start easing in with some high level education passion reading to start the spark again. Then do a little detail planning on a few specific next year goals. But keep mixing total check out! #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1-Never stop learning! It may be at a different pace, but learning is at the center of what we do! Learn & reflect on that learning so that we can be our best for our students and staff always! #leadupchat
A1: Plan the heck out of ways to build class culture in the opening 2 weeks. Content can wait. Build those peer & teacher-student relationships. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1: Sleep. Go outside as much as possible. Be around adults as much as possible. Keep our brains active by doing something creative. Relax. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: I haven’t had much time to recharge. New job, finishing grad school and two little girls, ages 2 and 4. But I am fulfilled by my work and I know I need to be more intentional about slowing down! #LeadUpChat
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 Take cate of recharging themselves by relaxing and taking a break from school. In addition, grab current books on amazing educational changes to implement! #leadupchat
A1: Plan the heck out of ways to build class culture in the opening 2 weeks. Content can wait. Build those peer & teacher-student relationships. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1: I'll go with the three R's:
-Reconnect with family and friends
-Reflect on the triumphs and tragedies of your year
-Read for inspiration and enjoyment
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Rest! We will have time to get things in order before school starts. Our bodies, souls, and minds need time to decompress. Once we are properly rejuvenated, we will be in the best state of mind to lead our students through a great year! #BoldSchool#Leadupchat
A1 Take time to enjoy families, friends, favorite things to do and walk away from school for a while. It is important to just let it go for a while. #leadupchat
Morning Amy! Sorry to miss you in D.C.! Guess that today will have to do! Excited to connect in Nashville (at least that's my vote). #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q1. First priority should be self-care. Taking the time to rejevenate and do something for you. Next, invest in the Learning you need to lead others. #leadupchat
A1: relax, rest, recharge (I recharged by reading some great teacher books at the beach 🏖)! You can’t give your all for the next school year if you haven’t filled up your cup over the summer & your students deserve to have you at your best! #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Spend the last bits of summer setting up a website or blog on a Domain You Own. I believe modeling #LeadUpChat requires us to guide students toward an #IndieWeb future (https://t.co/CGgf4m1ZR1)
A1 Me time! Whatever that means for you, whether it be sleeping late, taking walks, shopping, swimming, reading, #edcamps, twitter chats. Everyone recharges in different ways. #leadupchat
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool

Our apologizes if we don't get to welcome each of you personally. This is what happens when you have the collective efficacy explode on Saturday mornings! @Wes_Kieschnick#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: For me, summer is a mixed bag of work and play. It’s about being balanced in a way that I can’t be during the school year. I also remember that there will come a time when Fall will ask what I have been doing all Summer. #LeadUpChat
A1 If we are purposeful about aligning all five elements of wellbeing when we have time to reflect and implement a plan then we begin a new year thriving. And we are better able to maintain and adjust in the midst of chaos and activity. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1: First- find time for family. Second- remind yourself that some kiddos aren’t enjoying their “break”- check up on your most vulnerable kiddos- bring them books- share your love. Home visits go SO far- try to get some staff to go with you! #LeadUpChat
In the summer, educators need to relax, have fun, and check out. The school year takes a lot out of you and if you don’t check out then you don’t give your mind a chance to refresh and get excited about the new year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Rest and rejuvate first! This is a time to (re)connect with family and friends. The summer reading and reflection can also happen - but rest and relaxation is essential first! #leadupchat
A1: This could be a long list. 😀 For me it is to read, be outside, and find something to explore. We want our students to be curious and then pursue answers to their curiosity. That should be for us as well. #leadupchat
Only 10 minutes into the chat today! Jump into #LeadUpChat and #BoldSchool as we have soooo much more ground to cover. Follow tweets by @Wes_Kieschnick and me!
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 I think that's highly personalized. For me, I need to step away to read, reflect, and plan for the upcoming school year. And I need to spend quality time with my family. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 Agree that R&R is important. I also think it's a great time to deeply review past efforts, goals, and then do some deep research related to those goals. #leadupchat
A1) Teaching is so incredibly draining that it's important to use the summer months to do exactly that: rest and refuel.
Sleep in.
Go on vacation.
Binge watch tv.
Spend time sitting at coffee shops.
etc.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 it’s important for teachers to take time for themselves - to invest in themselves... engage those personal passions (#tlap), and then begin building back up professionally thru books, chats, conferences, PD. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1: Reconnecting, rediscovering and recommitting to our why. Personally and professionally coming back to center through time with family, friends and colleagues. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: It’s important for educators to find a way NOT to make your summer schedule like a lesson plan. (This is hard for me.) Relax, let the little things go, and take time for YOU! #LeadUpChat#Boldschool
A1: We must take time to relax, reflect and recharge! We have to make time for ourselves, we need to take time to reflect on the past year, and we must take the opportunity to grow professionally and recharge our passion so we can begin the year ready to go! #LeadUpChat
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
#leadupchat#boldschool A1 Spending time in reflection--on the past school year and the coming one (deep contemplation of those tough questions), but also practicing mindfulness--being in the moment of the summer break and truly allowing rest of body, mind and spirit.
A1: Plan the heck out of ways to build class culture in the opening 2 weeks. Content can wait. Build those peer & teacher-student relationships. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
I think "Me Time" is so underrated...we need to take the time for ourselves since we so rarely do it during the school year!
It's not selfish...it's vital!
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
Tagging in late for this great chat. Chris (principal from KS).
A1 - I think most important is to reflect upon past practices and think how we can continue to innovate for students so they develop the essential skills. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Educators need breaks so they can decompress/rest, but also to focus on their desire to continue growth. Reflection on the previous year, tied with new learning over a break can take our influence to a new level. A blend of rest/fun/learning is ideal! #leadupchat#boldschool
A1: I think we need to move away from assuming Ts & Ss rest and relax over summer break and having that as the narrative. I know so many who teach in summer programs, present their work across the country, invest in reflection @ amazing conferences and PD. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1: I believe it is important for us to 1st do something fun for ourselves/family, but then recharging with new info & learning must occur. Learn something and apply it in the next school year! #leadupchat#boldschool
A1: I believe there needs to be components of passion projects, "checking out" for a time, some PD for the next steps, which can be picked up in a variety of ways, and of course lots of self-care and family time. #leadupchat#boldschools
A1: Reflect and refocus! I like to end the school year with a staff survey that helps me to understand what they have appreciated of me during the year, and also how I can grow and be even better the next year. #leadupchat
A1. Rest, Reflection, & Growth are the most important things for educators in the summer months. For me Rest = Travel. Reflection = reviewing good & bad, Having Conversations, & Developing Ideas. Growth = Reading, Attending Conferences... #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1. To completely turn off “school mode” for a certain length of time and focus on self, family, as well as personal interests, hobbies, and passions. I think sometimes educators lose a little of themselves as we so selflessly put others before our own needs. #leadupchat
A1: Reflect, rest, spend time with your family but also spend time on your professional growth. I enjoy reading, going to conferences and networking. Gathering ideas to ensure we doing right by our students and staff to make the school year AMAZING! #leadupchat
A1. Balance is key! Gotta fill up our own tanks before you return to the classroom & expect to have the energy to sustain a full year of providing for others. Traveled. Saw great shows & concerts. Sent my first manuscript to a publisher. And conferences! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Rest, reflect, relax and rejuvenate . Those four things take on a different faces for different people but we need all of them to be the best we can be when we return to school! #leadupchat
For me it’s about disconnecting as much as possible, reconnecting with summer activities such as running, beach, and relaxing, and finally reengaging with the school community with a renewed hope and positivity #LeadUpChat
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Spend as much time as possible in the summer feeding the source…YOU! When you feed the source, you build the resource. Realize what a valuable resource you are for children. Fill your buckets. You can’t fill others from an empty vessel! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Good morning #LeadUpChat!
A1: Find AT LEAST a solid week to turn it all off and spend time with family/friends! Then slowly get back into it by doing some professional reading and networking!
Q1: We hope you’ve had a summer filled with rest, relaxation, and opportunities to recharge. What would you say is most important for educators to do in the summer months in order to be at our best? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1) Got to do those things that are life giving...
Refresh
Regroup
Reflect
Reenergize
Reengage
To many educators do this during the Summer but don't take care of themselves during the school year. To be great for kids you have to take care of you.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 it’s important for teachers to take time for themselves - to invest in themselves... engage those personal passions (#tlap), and then begin building back up professionally thru books, chats, conferences, PD. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Hey y’all! I’m late to the party but glad to be back! Hope everyone’s Saturday has started offf well! I’m Latoya, a state level ed leader in SC! #LeadUpChat
A1: It’s important for educators to find a way NOT to make your summer schedule like a lesson plan. (This is hard for me.) Relax, let the little things go, and take time for YOU! #LeadUpChat#Boldschool
A1b. Additionally, educators should reflect upon their practices to ensure they are loving themselves as much during the school year as they care and support others. What does this look like? How can I foster my own self-care? #leadupchat
A1 Reestablish the family work balance that is often “out of whack” during the school year. Take time for closure, to dump the baggage of last year, and rejuvenate for the fall #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
True! We do tend to spend a lot of time taking care of other people’s families and we need the summer to reconnect with our own families! #Leadupchat#boldschool
A1: Rest and rejuvate first! This is a time to (re)connect with family and friends. The summer reading and reflection can also happen - but rest and relaxation is essential first! #leadupchat
A1: 1. We should stop doing stuff that gets in the way of partnering with kids to CREATE great lives.
2. We should start thinking about everything we are doing through this lens.
3. We should make magic, each and every day. Because our kids need us.
#BoldSchool#leadupchat
A1 Check in with your Purpose, Physical, Financial, Social, and Community wellbeing. The goal is to be thriving in all areas so we live out our strengths in a healthy way when school begins. #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A1: CONNECT w your tribe (family, friends, #PLN), REFLECT on what worked & what you need to UNlearn, get inspired to BELIEVE & be a FEARLESS learner. Rejuvenate & have fun! #leadupchat#boldschool
A1 We have to remember renewal is not just for summer. It's important to build in daily routines that allow our buckets to be filled throughout the school year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Reflection is key for being able to come back to school already to make a difference. It is also key to recharge and allow yourself be present in the moments outside of school. #leadupchat
A1: I use the summer months to disconnect periodically, to catch up on some pleasure reading, and to build excitement for some new initiiatives and ideas without the pressure of having to start right away! #leadupchat
Find time for yourself. I’m so guilty of overworking and taking care of others. But we are better if we recharge ourselves as well. I need to be in nature. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1-Summer is a different pace for me. Still busy, but in different ways, which is a good thing! We need time to recharge, reflect, etc. all year so that we don’t burn out at the critical times. #leadupchat
I think it is important for educators to relax and reflect. There should be down time but still excitement about going into the new year. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1 - It's important to rest and relax immediately I think. But after a week or two, I start reflecting on the year and also seeking new PD opportunities for the summer, whether it might be books or webinars or podcasts. #LeadUpChat
A1 We have to remember renewal is not just for summer. It's important to build in daily routines that allow our buckets to be filled throughout the school year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1. For me, reflection is key as is relaxation and unplugging. Being plugged in 24-7 isn’t healthy and from what I read as productively having a balanced work life. I’m committed to this because I have failed at at for many years. #LeadUpChat
A1: Rediscover who you are! Take the time and reflect on your progress as an educator. Take time to study the current trends in education and reflect on how it could propel your mindset for the new school year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Perhaps the extended break is important for other reasons than the obvious and essential relax, recharge, reset. It also gives us time to be mindful of our continuous improvement... #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Tagging in late for this great chat. Chris (principal from KS).

Couldn’t agree with this more! Too often we “save” reflection & recharging for the summer, when we need to make it a part of our day/week all year! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1 We have to remember renewal is not just for summer. It's important to build in daily routines that allow our buckets to be filled throughout the school year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: @aadrean reminds me that it's Job #1 on the first day of school to build relationships - don't pass out the rules, books, or homework assignment! #leadupchat
A1. For me, reflection is key as is relaxation and unplugging. Being plugged in 24-7 isn’t healthy and from what I read as productively having a balanced work life. I’m committed to this because I have failed at at for many years. #LeadUpChat

You nailed it for me! My husband teases me about how my work is also my hobby. Even my down time is often spent in thinking and reading about education. Can't help it! :) #leadupchat#boldschool
A2 Make a connection to the kiddos before school starts via letter/postcard, meet them outside before the bell to chat, greet kids with lots of enthusiasm and genuine desire to know them. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
1. Build relationships
2. Learn student names
3. Teach your best lesson on the first day. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
A1: Recharge and reflect. I’ve spent my summer traveling and reading, both have given me insight on what I want to change this upcoming year. #leadupchat
A2: building my class community & all my relationships. I want to take days 1-whenever at the start of the year & really build those connections! Doing that will set learning up for success! #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Building relationships is what that first day of school is all about. Getting out there greeting parents and kids. Taking that time can make a real impact later. #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A1. Rest, Reflection, & Growth are the most important things for educators in the summer months. For me Rest = Travel. Reflection = reviewing good & bad, Having Conversations, & Developing Ideas. Growth = Reading, Attending Conferences... #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
My heart was FILLED at our @SolutionTree PLC Coaching conference this week! New Principal @MartinCISD and her team are COMMITED to knowing one thing academically and one thing socially/emotionally about each child in the first ten days. #leadupchat#allmeansall
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I am starting a new position that puts me at the district instead of building level. My goal for day one is to support the other leaders on my team. Be the smile, the support, the answer, anything they need me to be so they can accomplish their day 1! #leadupchat#boldschool
Great metaphor for teacher blogs from #LeadUpChat…and an exemplar text to share with your teachers. Is your digital life a model for teachers? (https://t.co/wQTNxtm8Os)
I def agree, Ashley. As an instructional coach, I try to encourage teachers to do that all year long rather than save it for “winter break” “spring break” and summer. Students are the same, especially those involved in summer school, sports, church, etc. #leadupchat#boldschool
A2. Last year we had an early release Day1 because of the solar eclipse. We are doing early release again this year. The shortened time frame fits better for positive, engaging activities. We hope all classes are building a positive culture Day1. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: For me the first day is like a job interview. The pressure is on to impress. However, I have always had Ss engage in discussion to set class norms. #LeadUpChat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Not sure yet, but I'm keenly aware that the first thing out of my mouth that morning will be what sticks; stress the pieces that are most important, build the culture of the building, and leave the menusha for later in the week. #leadupchat#boldschool
A2 Make a connection to the kiddos before school starts via letter/postcard, meet them outside before the bell to chat, greet kids with lots of enthusiasm and genuine desire to know them. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Love the focus on reflection! Unplugging in itself may not always be enough for us without the reflection piece. Would be interesting to hear how each person goes about engaging in meaningful reflection during the summer. #LeadUpChat
A1. For me, reflection is key as is relaxation and unplugging. Being plugged in 24-7 isn’t healthy and from what I read as productively having a balanced work life. I’m committed to this because I have failed at at for many years. #LeadUpChat
A2: We always rotate through grade level assemblies with admin and teaching team. Reflect on year before, get excited about the year ahead, set the stage for something we may be tackling as a school. A relationship reminder that we are amazing together. #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
A2: My strategy for day 1 is the same as day 180...connect with students and staff. Tell them you believe in them, they are amazing, and smile often. I love walking into school singing a good tune with a nice beat in my steps. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: We start at meet the teacher night the week before school begins: make a connection w/ the child and family (b/c we have already been data digging to learn some background), continue that on the 1st day. Learning names, each other, building community. #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A2: Stay calm and collected. Teachers, students, and parents (especially incoming kinder parents) need to see that we are prepared to take care of their kids and that they are in good hands in our building. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: We get to know each other and read picture books. I teach Grade 7 & 8 and I don't mention rules or anything beyond respecting each others right to learn on day 1. #leadupchat
YES! Learn student names - and how to pronounce them correctly. Don't allow the student to not think it matters! You need to be the one to get them all right! #leadupchat
A2) Day 1 is about hospitality and relationships. People (teachers and students) need to feel welcomed back into their school and relationships need to be front-and-center. It's not about establishing rules on Day 1, it's about establishing the culture.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: as a teacher I always wanted to introduce the routines and have fun/get to know the students. In my new role this year I want to do the same thing... get to know teachers, students, and how the school days flow. #leadupchat
A2 Last year we planned a school wide treasure hunt and all had an icy treat together on the school yard. So much fun! Can't wait to see what we come up with for this year. #leadupchat#boldschool
A2: For me the first day is like a job interview. The pressure is on to impress. However, I have always had Ss engage in discussion to set class norms. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: My strategy for Day 1 is customer service & do nothing from my admin to do list.
I focus on kids 1st, moms, dads, grandparents, guardians, etc. I reflect w/Ts after for feedback.
The 1st day is the 1st moment to show them our school is awesome! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A1 We have to remember renewal is not just for summer. It's important to build in daily routines that allow our buckets to be filled throughout the school year. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: We get to know each other and read picture books. I teach Grade 7 & 8 and I don't mention rules or anything beyond respecting each others right to learn on day 1. #leadupchat
Day 1
1. Greet @ student with a smile, offer a handshake.
2. Create a class atmosphere of excitement & acceptance.
3. Relationship building activities.
4. Bedtime 6:30pm
#leadupchat
A1: summer should be a time for self reflection, self care, self preparation and self driven learning. Journal, exercise, relax, prep for the year at a normal pace, research and Read, Read, Read, Read, Read! Take time to take care of yourself! #LeadUpChat
I’m going to plan and schedule those bucket filllers on the calendar this year. Otherwise, they get replaced with other pressing issues. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
#leadupchat A2: Be visible and talk to as many students in the district as possible. Talk to each staff member in the district and welcome them 2 the first day of school
A2: We’re trying something different this year. The day will be totally focused on relationships & understanding our school’s vision. We’ll be showing students the Warrior Way! Community members will be joining us in celebrating students return to school. #leadupchat#boldshool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2. Day1 I will be visible 100% of the time. Being out and about in the building is always the goal, but there is no reason to be in the office at the beginning. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I typically read my great Twitter follows--amazing educators I've hand picked who share wonderful links, ideas, questions, then reflect by blogging, reading more w/coffee. How about you? #leadupchat
A2: Day 1 starts from Orientation week beforehand. It's important to set goals and describe what the new year can bring to start off with lots of enthusiasm. It's good to be prepared for that first week and give Ts time for that too. #boldschool#leadupchat
A2 Greeting our parents, welcoming our students, and supporting our teachers. Our team's goal is to express the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm that we are ready to start a year of learning and growing our students #leadupchat#boldschool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q2 The small moment conversations on day one will tell those is your leadership care what you care about most. Those first “back to school” moments are an opportunity to show you care. What will be your first ask/question? #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A1. When I’ve trusted myself enough to allow myself to relax and recharge I’ve found that I’m a better balanced person and leader mentally, physically, and spiritually. I used to think I had to be on 24-7 but I learned the hard way that working that way was unhealthy #leadupchat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Very excited about this! Ts & Ss are designing our first two days back so everything we do focuses on relationships & fostering deep meaningful connections side-by-side. We can’t begin to learn without the foundation.
Relationship building/Reconnecting!
Can I get an Amen 🙏🏻 ?
Through this we build our community and set the foundation for an amazing year. It starts on day 1 AND must continue each and every day #LeadUpChat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: I want day one to be about the importance of #studentvoice. Set the culture right away that says what is important to them, is important to me. #LeadUpChat#boldschool
A2-It’s all about connecting with people. When we connect with people, we build our collective vision & mission. It’s with people that the great work is done! #leadupchat
I'm going back to having family meetings again to explain what's happening in math ed. Huge shifts toward inquiry even happening in colleges. #leadupchat
A2: Stay calm and collected. Teachers, students, and parents (especially incoming kinder parents) need to see that we are prepared to take care of their kids and that they are in good hands in our building. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2 Day 1 is so important for many things, culture, routines, and tone. I make sure day 1 is joyful, intentional, and purposeful in introduction and fulfillment of those three things. #Leadupchat
A2. This year’s strategy for day 1: Go to every classroom and document first day through a picture in each room. Build a video of the day to share out via social media. Goal is to focus on visibility and relationships with Ts, Ss, and Ps. #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A2-It’s all about connecting with people. When we connect with people, we build our collective vision & mission. It’s with people that the great work is done! #leadupchat
A2. (1 of 3). Completed my level one #gamification certification this summer under @monicacornetti at @SeriousPlayConf. Designed fully gamified back to school activities for all incoming freshmen, all teachers, and my own students.
For the freshmen... #boldschool#leadupchat
A2) As tempting as it is to make Day 1 all about procedures you make it about people. The procedures will have meaning when kids establish a relationship first. People need to belong before they believe. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Day 1 has to be very purposeful. It’s an opportunity to first and foremost build relationships with students and make them feel comfortable in their new environment. But also to set the expectation that students will be challenged and have fun!
A2b: I also try not to cry during the pledge on the first day! (And last). I get so emotional when I think about the importance of our work, the precious kids, and the positive impact we can have on their lives. ❤️ #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I can’t wait to spend time at every campus in our district in the first few days! I’m going to serve my principals and their educators by asking what I can do to help! And I can’t wait to see our kids! #LeadUpChat
1) Rest
2) Be a learner. Like your kids. Empathy
3) Connect to your city resources
4) Set goals for next year (self, instruction, fam) & next 5 yrs. That future-fwd trajectory will guide your heart, mind & steps in the background taking you to those goals! #leadupchat#boldschool
So excited for Day 1! For staff,we model what we want in classrooms- so engaging activities that focus on reconnecting and going deeper on our “why”. For day 1 w/ kids - it’s all about relationships and doing “out of the box” ideas to get kids excited. #boldschool#leadupchat
A2 As an art teacher, I want my students making and creating on day one. I want them exploring and sharing and finding joy in this space, their space. Creating is the heart of the art room and I want it pumping and excited as quickly as possible. #LeadUpChat
A2: We are bringing the Disney Magic to @verobeachelem this year. Day 1 is about greeting our kiddos with love, hugs, and pixie dust! Music will be played, dances will be done, and hearts will be filled! #relationshipsfirst#icantwait#leadupchat
A2: Be present! Live in the moment. Show all stakeholders that you're there for the community. Visit classrooms, set the standard; show that you are the teachers #1 cheerleader...and that you're the #1 FAN of the students! #BoldSchool#leadupchat
My day one strategy begins with starting a few weeks ahead of time….oh..no…that is pretty much now…new strategy…last beach day #LeadUpChat (https://t.co/RlGFjH9GsQ)
This was a list of so many of the reasons (including yours), and everyone's reasons seemed to start with R that I immediately went to Sesame Street!
#leadupchat
A2: Day 1: BE there! Fully focused on meeting and greeting students, parents, staff, and anyone that is in the building. Reconnect and start those new relationships with genuine care and trust building steps. #leadupchat#boldschools
A2: One study showed that students initial perceptions of a professor in the first 10 seconds were essentially the same as their end of semester review. First impressions are POWERFUL! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: Hi All! I agree completely! We are different people so it looks different.....I like a blend of all the things below including a few more. We have to personalize the Recharge but recharge we must. #leadupchat
I start w/names--I read each child's name and have the children correct me. Since I work in a predominantly white school sometimes I'll show this: https://t.co/cwS9TzMnWR and discuss the importance of names, but how names are sometimes tricky for people. #leadupchat
Commit to family time and the parts of life that fill our cups. Could be travel, fitness, or quiet time to read. When we take care of our needs we can better meet the needs of others. #leadupchat
A2: Day one for students is critical to be at the door, welcome the students, smile, be happy, show them you care, and at the secondary level for me its important to communicate! Share norms, expectations, schedules, log in information, changes, transitions, etc... #LeadUpChat
A2: I can’t wait to spend time at every campus in our district in the first few days! I’m going to serve my principals and their educators by asking what I can do to help! And I can’t wait to see our kids! #LeadUpChat
A1: Good morning #leadupchat ! Diane Elem Principal from CT. Headed to the Cape with extended family as I chat. Now THAT’s what’s important is that I can be at my best when I return to school. #boldschool
A2: Day 1 is about building a culture of Safety, Support, and Belonging. If you spend more time going over rules and procedures than you do building relationships with kids, prepare to spend the rest of your year making up for lost time and opportunity. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I love that you go in with the mindset that you are interviewing to be their teacher! At the end of the day it is their choice whether or not they will buy-in. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2. This year’s strategy for day 1: Go to every classroom and document first day through a picture in each room. Build a video of the day to share out via social media. Goal is to focus on visibility and relationships with Ts, Ss, and Ps. #BoldSchool#leadupchat
Yes, @gcouros always does a great job of driving that home. Todd..."we can't have fun this is work." Feel like you shared a recent story with me on this. :)
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: First goal = get our team connected & inspired. We huddle & I remind them how much I believe in them & the journey we are about to embark upon. Second goal = as much music, dancing, hugs & high fives as I can fit in before the first class kicks off! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A2: Smile, but command integrity and respect. Be organized, but not rigid. Set expectations high, yet attainable. Enforce rules, but embrace relationships. Be productive, but focus on 1-2 things and not 8-10 things. #leadupchat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Day 1 will be spent with making introductions, engaging conversations, opportunities to connect, building relationships. It won’t be about the academics, it will be about getting to know the people. #LeadUpChat
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Just make sure that everyone feels welcome and folks have what they need! A lot of support folks in the hallways to help families & S's with whatever they need. A lot of community support to help teachers ! Oh and a coffee bar, snacks and water for teachers! #leadupchat
I have gone to using a paper journal for jumpstarting my reflection. My digital content is in various places that the paper journal has helped me focus on reflection questions and activities. #LeadUpChat
Proud of the work being done by our HTSD staff to get ready for 2018-19. Here's one example of many coming as we show how our district theme of Today is Your Day to Make a Difference is happening all around our district!

A2 The first back to school moments are an opportunity to create a thriving wellbeing culture by providing opportunities to develop healthy interactions and subcultures #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A2 - I'm going to set the tone for my classroom, behavior and expectation wise, while also engaging students in a new love for writing and reading. I want to share my personal interest and love for writing and reading, and hope it piques student interest. #LeadUpChat
I am starting a new position that puts me at the district instead of building level. My goal for day one is to support the other leaders on my team. Be the smile, the support, the answer, anything they need me to be so they can accomplish their day 1! #leadupchat#boldschool
A1: Detox - letting go & shifting focus. Travel, rest, play, attend conferences, read...gathering inspiration for the next school year.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: tell as many Ts and Ss how much I missed them this summer and how excited I am to begin a new year with them. Making Ts and Ss feel valued and safe. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
W/ freshmen filtering from 2 middle schools with a grad class of over 900, I get them writing about their interests and passions immediately. Sharing their writing to new faces. Creating an environment where writing and talking will be the every day norm. #LeadUpChat#Boldschool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: To help make school the most exciting place for the kids to be on Day 1, Day 2...Day 180 starts with building relationships, smiling, high fiving, encouraging, celebrating, laughing, and recognizing each other's differences. #leadupchat
A2: Grateful that I have a "Day 1" with many educators across the state! My Day 1 strategy is to prepare a special message that reminds them of the powerful WHY of the work we are doing and to cheer them on as they kick of their school year. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: I had been teaching at the same school for the past 13 years so the first day was always about welcoming my kids back. Now that I’m moving, it’s about introducing myself & creating that same sense of community #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
In preparing for Day 1, be intentional in the midst of lesson planning and everything else to pick up the phone and call parents BEFORE you ever meet their kids. Send an email, do something! Your biggest return on investment right there.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A2. (2 of 3) Gamified week of teacher PD training to intro handbook updates and new pedagogies. We’ll be using an original #QRBreakIN inspired by The Avengers, then the Mr. Potato Head PDSA. https://t.co/3a82Qdhx8v#BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
Good perspective, Sometimes I say, Can you believe they pay me to serve you--I am here for you, and please let me know what I can do for you? Sets the stage for "servant/partner leadership" #leadupchat
Day 1 right after the first bell- Principal welcomes and leads raising of flag/pledge to set the tone for the day and weeks ahead. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A2. I love that I am seeing lots of messages about culture and building relationships. As leaders we must be sure that we are modeling this at our pre-planning training! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Day 1 is all about calming the nerves of Ss, Ps, and Ts. Making the 1st day safe, happy, and fun. Intro our new “we’re all on the same team” theme and make ‘me beg to come back on Day 2! #leadupchat
This is so true! People sometimes undermine the power of relationships but students and teachers alike will buy into the program with leaders they believe in and trust #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: That the first few weeks are important. I have had students miss the first few weeks because of a cheap holiday opportunity. They start off behind and it is work to catch up. #leadupchat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2 I still remember my first day of kindergarten and the smiling faces of so many educators and the principal standing on the top of the big, shiny, wide mahogany steps--very welcoming more than 5 decades ago. #leadupchat
A2. It all about setting up positive relationships for what your class is going to look like. What do you want your first impression to look like???#LeadUpChat
A2: Just started #EDUProtocols Love some of the Smart Start challenges. Want to build connections in class, while introducing skills they'll need throughout the year like Frayer model, Google Slides, Adobe Spark, etc. Low entry, High Ceiling challenges #leadupchat#boldschool
A3: We love your kids. Support school by being positive partners. Check in with us. Celebrate small successes with your child. Visit and offer help. School is not work, it's a vital part of your child's development and your engagement is key! #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
A2: strategy for first week- build connections & intentionally design learning to embed what I value for all Ss- collaboration, inquiry, critical thinking. set the tone from day 1 #leadupchat
A1: Day 1 w/ my staff is all about team building and culture cultivation. After our district convocation, we will go on a #TeamUpForKindness scav hunt in the community then come back to hear a vision cast from me (their new prin). #leadupchat
A2: As a one year 6th grade @PollyRyonMS campus....we host a two day camp full of relationship building, site seeing, procedures, greeting at the doors, and LOTS OF POSITIVE ENERGY! #LeadUpChat
A2 Reconnect with previous Ss & Ts. Celebrate their return. Establish connections with new staff and Ss. Rejoice in the new beginning and new opportunities for learning
#BoldSchool#leadupchat
A2: Build a caring community through modeling. Talk individually with each student, be silly together, Team build. Hug. Tell them they are now my children today and forever. #LeadUpChat
Send parents a list of sentence starters to get kids to talk about school beyond, “How was your day?” Stuff like, “What is something that made you laugh…one thing you learned..Share a worry that you” Maybe a @RemindHQ, FB, Twitter, etc. #LeadUpChat (https://t.co/52rkjKPvGI)
A3: Some kids come to school with social graces, ready to learn, bellies full. Some do not. We must show patience with kids who do not. ALL of us must be patient and show empathy, tolerance, and acceptance. No child is better than the other. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I want parent to know their children are loved, cared for, and we all want what’s best for them. Parents are a critical pipeline for us and we have so much respect and admiration for them. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I wish they knew that we CAN make the whole school year just as supportive and invigorating as day 1. We just have to work together and do the little things every day. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: We love your kids. Support school by being positive partners. Check in with us. Celebrate small successes with your child. Visit and offer help. School is not work, it's a vital part of your child's development and your engagement is key! #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: That I want my classroom to be about learning first and achievement second. A student may end up with a good grade because they do school well but not be learning. I want my classroom to be a true laboratory of learning. #leadupchat
When I sent out an email to 150 families, only 10% responded. Left voice messages and I'm now up to 75%....but that was about 6 hrs of phoning. #leadupchat
A3:I hope to communicate effectively with my parents and students the positive changes and opportunities that will be available to our them this new year. They need to trust that we love their child & have prepare many avenues for them to graduate and succeed in life! #LeadUpChat
A3: I think what I really want them to know is that we respect and value them as parents and guardians, that we love and respect their child, and that we will work as a team to help kiddos reach their true potential #leadupchat
A3 Parents want to know that you care about their child and if they are thriving. In doing so you send the message you care if their family is thriving as well #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A2: Day 1 strategy for me is to continue to be positive, visible, and helpful. I want to meet others needs and give all and opportunity to feel the warmth and see the work. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q2: Day 1 of any school year is prime time real estate. It’s an opportunity to set the tone and lay a foundation of understanding for everyone in your class, school, or district. What is your strategy for day 1? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool

A2: Day 1 is about building a culture of Safety, Support, and Belonging. If you spend more time going over rules and procedures than you do building relationships with kids, prepare to spend the rest of your year making up for lost time and opportunity. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3. Parents must know that there will be plenty of time to discuss their Ss unique needs. It does not have to happen when first meeting the Ts. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Be encouraging, supportive, and connect with the school.
Investing in and with the school is important preK through graduation. It must be a partnership between home, school, and community #LeadupChat#Boldschool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2: Don't be afraid to SMILE! 😀Begin building relationships on day one - even if Ss are moved from your class your impression WILL impact the year.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I wish parents knew how awesome our teachers are and how much energy they spend preparing 4 children’s success. I also wish they knew how much teachers love their students. Academically, I wish they knew how important it is to read 2 their children #BoldSchool#Leadupchat
A3: that the school year is not a race but a marathon. Let us build the rapport, knowledge, and trust of their child to prepare for a positive, engaging, exciting year! #LeadUpChat#PrincipalsInAction
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
#leadupchat#boldteach A3: I hope the first few weeks will show parents that their children will be LOVED unconditionally! That we are an authentic extension of their family.
A3 First weeks of school are a transitional time for kids- make sure that they get rest, eat right, play (exercise) and have someone to talk to. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: I want parents to know that their children are fully capable of handling things on their own and should encourage them to problem solve and seek help if they need it from their Ts and administrators. #boldschool#leadupchat
A3 Some students are excited to return and some are quite anxious. I would want to reassure them so they know that we know how important their child is to them and we will do whatever is possible to make them feel welcome and support them. #leadupchat#boldchat
A3: We must take the time to get to know one another and build a sense of community. We are all in this together and when we work as a team, we can achieve great things. Be visible, be present, be active! #LeadUpChat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3) A lot of parents already get this, but it would be awesome if all of them knew that we really love their kid(s) and that we're always going to try to make decisions that are in their best interests.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2. I don’t have a first day of school technically but here are some of my goals:
1. Focus on helping and developing others more
2. Improve the frequency & effectiveness of my communication
3. Give positive feedback more than negative feedback
4. Be brave!
#Boldschool#leadupchat
A3: That the teachers and principals are just as nervous, anxious, and as excited! (reference to the book First Day Jitters - showing my elementary mindset here!) Advice: Be present. Live in the moment - they go too fast. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: It is essential to spend time with those that matter most: family. Rest, enjoy the sounds of nature, and all things positive. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: The start of school is when we are building our school team for the year and they are key players. We need parents to buy in as much as students to make sure we all have a successful year. We are all #TeamKid#leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: get to know the teacher and support/work with the teacher. Build that up from the start. Also find ways to support the school/district by donating if you’re able to. Donate time, effort, supplies, etc... #leadupchat
A3, While we do discuss Ss history, and we take into account what has happened in the past, we truly provide a fresh start every year (and every day!) #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2 First day sets tone for every day. Every day begins with a morning gathering of the community to have time together, sharing purpose and values. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3. I wish they knew that we love their kids as much as they do and that we want the best for them. That we are partners in their success not for school, but for life-long learning and success. #leadupchat
A2: Day 1 with students is all about embracing them with joy and letting them know it's going to be the best year ever. Of course, a successful 1st day is also welcoming them, feeding them, and getting them home safely! 😁 #leadupchat
A3: Help them get sleep, eat well, encourage them to be open to new people and experiences, and to build compassion, determination, grit! Ask them deep questions about school to help them reflect! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3-Each day, we support & care for kids, and parents are an absolutely essential part of this. School is a marathon, not a spring, and together we can help support our students for their growth, learning, and future. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
It's very important for parents to understand that no question is too small to ask, to ask questions up front typically prevents bigger issues, misunderstandings, or problems later on. #leadupchat
A3: Be a positive force. The first weeks of school should be the same as the last weeks of school. Be present, be supportive, don't take everything at face value. Let "struggle" happen and celebrate every success. Students are learning, it takes time to master it. #leadupchat
A3: Kids are going to be TIRED after the first few days back. It doesn't mean they don't like it, give them down time and lots of rest to get back into the grove. #leadupchat#boldschool
A2: We will be communicating high expectations, CAREtaking, CONNECTing and CREATING partnerships b/n Ps, Ts, Ss. Lots of smiles, lots of "welcome back" and most important lots of "I missed you."
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: Be patient, but persistent. Teachers are building relationships and an environment for your children. But, parents should expect to be part of the environment. The school should reflect the same. #LeadUpChat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I love this question. Rather than guess what they might want to know, what if we posted a Q/A session on our school social media accounts and went live? Or had a (multilingual) table for just Q/A at our Meet the Teachers. Let’s answer their questions! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3- I would encourage parents to be involved/supportive of our school. I would hope they would tell kids to try new challenges, it’s ok to fail as it provides learning opportunities and get the most out of their school experiences! Every kid is a leader. #leadupchat#boldschool
WOW! One #TMGenius book study we are doing is The Power of Moments. This study supports what this book is all about. Focus on those critical moments in an intentional way & there will be huge payoffs. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
In preparing for Day 1, be intentional in the midst of lesson planning and everything else to pick up the phone and call parents BEFORE you ever meet their kids. Send an email, do something! Your biggest return on investment right there.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A3: I would love it if parents understood how much time and effort went into class placements...and assumed positive intent as well as the understanding that I know my teachers better than they do (especially if they got their info from the "parking lot")
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: The beginning of the school year is exciting for kids, but it also adds stress to their child’s life. They’ve most likely been thrown out of their comfort zone by being in a new environment. Give them extra attention at home the first few weeks! #LeadUpChat#boldschool
A3: I wish Ps knew how exhausting the first few weeks are for all. I wish they knew we always work out the kinks & all Ss settle in with time. I wish they knew we want all Ss to be successful and that we are on the same page. We need parent partnerships! #leadupchat#boldschool
Parents should spend that time to get to know the teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. These people will care about your child (or not) for the next 180 days and you should have some kind of relationship with them. #LeadupChat#Boldschool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3 Yes, I agree with this. I want everyone on the learning team to know they are integral members of that team--the team includes students, families, colleagues, administrators, and community members. #leadupchat
A3 Every child has value. They don't need to love school, get perfect grades, or be perfect. Love on them because they are who they are. #leadupchat#boldschool
1000s of “good mornings”, “welcome backs”, and fist bumps/high fives. Greet students at the door and by their names. Leaders set the tone for what the energy in the building will be like. #leadupchat
A3: Parents, in the 1st week of school I encourage you to ask teachers how you can best support them this year. Remember, we are all on the same team. We want your children to succeed. Let’s offer one another helpful insights into how to make that happen! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3b. I would love to challenge every parent for the first few weeks of school to not ask how their child’s day was, but show me how your day was. Ask for evidence of learning and then dive into conversation of learning. #leadupchat
A3 We are all part of the same team. Regardless of the challenges that come up this year, we all want the best for your child. Work together to support and encourage the work we will do to help your child grow this year!
#BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
A3: I would ask parents to enjoy the ride and the diversity. Teachers approach teaching through different methods but we all have the same underlying goal... the development of their children at their own respective levels. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I find parents have heard enough fluff. They want specifics. In HS, after literacy, algebra is the gateway. I explain what parents can do without understanding any math. #leadupchat
A3: I hope our parents' experiences reveal that we are building relationships with them also during these first weeks. Need to know how to best communicate with them and to know that we are a team! This relationship is critical too! #leadupchat#boldschools
A3: It takes time to build culture and relationships. It doesn’t happen overnight. We cannot fix a difficult student or situation overnight. #BoldSchools#LeadUpChat
Especially our littles in Kindergarten who are just learningwhat school is all about, give them a chance to live and love school. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: Kids are going to be TIRED after the first few days back. It doesn't mean they don't like it, give them down time and lots of rest to get back into the grove. #leadupchat#boldschool
A3 We also send out a newsletter right away to welcome families, share the website, invite questioning, and invite them to attend Curriculum Night which typically occurs close to first day of school. #leadupchat
A2. I don’t have a first day of school technically but here are some of my goals:
1. Focus on helping and developing others more
2. Improve the frequency & effectiveness of my communication
3. Give positive feedback more than negative feedback
4. Be brave!
#Boldschool#leadupchat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I would like parents to know about grading false positives and negatives. Early grade books are not effective indicators of proficiency. Assignments are few and categories are missing. Relax and let time tell the tale. Let your kid figure it out. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A2 Start with our theme for the year ("Driven by Mission"): skit/song by leadership team, creative review of key terms of mission & vision. Full week of PD & fellowship. First day of school for kids: smiles, caring, enjoyment of school.
#leadupchat
A3: I think I could list so many things in this area, but none of it will matter if we don't build their trust 1st. This begins with going all out for their child on day 1! Show the LOVE! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3 Every child has value. They don't need to love school, get perfect grades, or be perfect. Love on them because they are who they are. #leadupchat#boldschool
A3: There is always another side to every story, and many times the story will be humbling and heart breaking, and change your whole perspective. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3, While we do discuss Ss history, and we take into account what has happened in the past, we truly provide a fresh start every year (and every day!) #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: To Parents: We are 💯 here for your kids...support, safety, and relationships....by working as a team...your kids will be soaring into secondary! #LeadUpChat
A3: I would want them to know that the adults in the building are as eager as they are for their children to reach their full potential. Effective collaboration is the key so let's build that culture together from day 1. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: grades aren’t everything. Success is measured in small steps. It’s ok to make mistakes. I will love your child like I do my kids. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I Truly miss my students when they are not there during the long days of summer alone in my office. So I make sure to tell each and every one of the returning students how much I missed them! They need to hear that too! #LeadUpChat
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool A3: As parents, the first weeks of the school year are about re-establishing routines and preparing our children for perseverance and growth mindsets
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I think I could list so many things in this area, but none of it will matter if we don't build their trust 1st. This begins with going all out for their child on day 1! Show the LOVE! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Dream of day where families apply for a subdomain on school network and we give our communities a place to gather from their own domain instead of relying on facebook/instagram which we knows makes youth unhappy #LeadUpChat (https://t.co/VJp0kqOR8i)
A3) As a admin I appreciate it when parents simply show grace as we will make mistakes the first weeks but we love your kids! I want parents to know a simple thank you does mean a lot to teachers.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I love "be brave." Anyone who works with the public these days can feel like there is a target painted on their back. We can be brave when we always try to do the right thing. #leadupchat
A3: Parent involvement is just as important in HS as in elem. The kids are going through the most difficult time of their life. Despite the push to make Ss advocate for themselves. They are still kids, 14-17 year olds still need supervision and guidance. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I would love it if parents understood how much time and effort went into class placements...and assumed positive intent as well as the understanding that I know my teachers better than they do (especially if they got their info from the "parking lot")
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: Wow, I love this question. This is the first time I'm seeing this from a parent's perspective. Now? I think parents want to know that their child is:
1) Safe
2) Has Ts who care about child
3) Has Ts who know their stuff
4) Child has fun learning
#leadupchat#boldschool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
In preparing for Day 1, be intentional in the midst of lesson planning and everything else to pick up the phone and call parents BEFORE you ever meet their kids. Send an email, do something! Your biggest return on investment right there.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A3. I love extending my “getting to know you” survey to BOTH students & their families. First day back and everyone gets the questionnaire via blast email. Builds positive relationships & really helps me understand who I’m serving! https://t.co/J12seS2XMJ#boldschool#leadupchat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3 Parents want to know you recognize the Strengths in their student and lead from a strengthsbased lens. What does my student do best and do they have opportunities everyday to use their strengths? (Same goes for adults by the way) #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A3: The advice I've always used no matter if I'm talking to a parent of a K student or a senior... WE've got this. I love, believe in & will take care of your child. I will do whatever it takes to help them be successful. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
Yes it is, there is always time to be nice and put in a smile no matter how frustrated one may be. In fact it saves you a lot of headaches if you lead with a smile. #LeadUpChat
Love this--I think of good professional work as that spiral towards betterment, a spiral fed by lifelong learning, experiences, learning from error, collaboration, responsible risk. . . .#leadupchat
We serve many families that come in alarmed because they don't have supplies or whatever. Our staff is excellent at catching that and meeting whatever needs they have. Backpacks, school supplies, shoes, a helping hand......
A3: grades aren’t everything. Success is measured in small steps. It’s ok to make mistakes. I will love your child like I do my kids. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Effective collaboration is a must! This is a great response! The parents should also be prepared to receive most positive & “need to improve” phone calls. Know that we are on the same page.
A2: Be present in the moment: smiles, listening, encouraging students, and laying the groundwork for relationships. Curriculum can wait on Day 1. #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
A4: If I could get every student at my school to understand these two things this year, I will consider myself a success:
1. YOU MATTER!
2. READING ROCKS!
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool A4: This school year, we're prioritizing thinking, applying, and behavioral skills as much as (or more than) content acquisition.
When students, parents, teachers, and admin are all working as a team then everyone wins. We are able to accomplish so much for the kids. #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3: it’s about learning & growing. Let’s work together to set goals, encourage along the way, emphasize strengths, celebrate wins. Let’s focus on the process of learning more than the grades or scores. #LeadUpChat
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Well-said @Wes_Kieschnick! Our very environments should scream "Fun! Joy! Learning!" all within a framework of guidelines and "ways of doing things"
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A2: Day 1 is about building a culture of Safety, Support, and Belonging. If you spend more time going over rules and procedures than you do building relationships with kids, prepare to spend the rest of your year making up for lost time and opportunity. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: Ps & Ss - get away from perfection, learning is messy. Stop searching for the "correct" answer. Seek the joy in challenges as opportunities for innovation & creativity.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: To presume positive intent when they hear a story from their child. If it doesn't sound good, they should feel free to contact the teacher for his/her side. #leadupchat
A3. That I will communicate a lot with you so please make a folder in ur inbox and a folder on ur computer or drive for things. Read what you want. Check out the blogs. Ask questions. Know your child's Google log in. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Good thoughts shared here. I notice that many comments for Q4 are less about academic objectives and more about building life-long skill sets. #LeadUpChat
A4: I want students to accomplish the goals most appropriate for them at their current level. I want students to develop a sense of confidence and self-efficacy regardless of the goal - academic, social-emotional well being, or otherwise. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Let's not use safety and security of our students as a barrier to keep our parents out of our schools. Anytime we can build a bridge, and not a wall, with open doors, communication, & opportunities for them to meaningfully plug in we should. #Noexcuses#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A3: I wish they knew how much we care and work hard for their child and we are TEAM Johnny/Susie! It is our job as leaders to communicate that message as clearly as possible by words and actions. And that school is hard those first few days cut everyone some slack! #leadupchat
A3: I hope parents know how much we love and want for their children and how much we value them as parents. It really does take a village. Parents could establish a strong bond with the teacher in the first weeks to ensure the parent & teacher are working together. #leadupchat
Great checklist @DavidGeurin. I would add "4. Share who you are as a person" Kids want to know who their teacher is, not just that the person is a teacher.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
1. Build relationships
2. Learn student names
3. Teach your best lesson on the first day. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
A4: I want students at a middle school level to figure out what they are passionate about. I want them to explore, to research, to make mistakes, to modify, to learn to never give up. We have a responsibility to show them who they are and what they are capable of. #leadupchat
A3: The key is that we are all in this together. Mission must be clear, concise, & reasonably defined to be meaningful & ultimately effective. Ss & Ts must be a team. All other members of the team must include parents/guardians, admins. & staff, & community. #leadupchat#Synergy
A3: Be a positive force. The first weeks of school should be the same as the last weeks of school. Be present, be supportive, don't take everything at face value. Let "struggle" happen and celebrate every success. Students are learning, it takes time to master it. #leadupchat
A4: Emotionally; a sense of growth mindset so our students realize mistakes are a part of the learning process. If we never make mistakes, are we really ever learning? Academically; pave the way to allow them to meet their goals for the year #BoldSchool#Leadupchat

A3: I wish they accepted that it takes a few weeks to get things rolling.
Balancing classes, bus routes, schedule changes will get done but not in the first few days.
We’re still enrolling students the first week so it takes time to fix those hiccups. #leadupchat
A4. Ss need to learn to advocate, be self directed learners, follow their curiosities, and that no one has all the answers. Use tools and figure things out. They need to listen better, collaborate, share ideas, and be kind. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool

A4: I have two major goals every year for students 1. Reading opens your imagination and takes you to new worlds. 2. Take risks and ask questions because you will never know if you don’t try. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A4: I want kids to know without a doubt that they have a future story, that education will help them get there, learn how to access content, use mistakes to grow, & learn how to self regulate their emotions while having empathy for the emotions of others. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
I would love for the Ss to be empowered by learning how to access help in a timely manner, gain essential life skills to make them successful in their college work and to feel motivated to learn #boldschool#leadupchat
Q4 I hope one goal is for students to be able to articulate what they do well and how they uniquely think, feel, and behave. Doing so leads to creating their thriving Purpose Wellbeing which is learning and achieving in school. #BoldSchool#leadupchat

A4: Because BC has core competencies and I have no experience with them (yet) I’m going to negotiate with the students the priorities. Ultimately I want to convey that this is their program and they contribute to the development of it & their learning. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A4: This is only our third year as a school and we have juniors for the first time. The first two years were about setting the foundation. These next two years are about developing student choice, voice and passion. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Absolutely! Policies must reinforce the philosophy (vision) of the school; structures (protocols, schoolwide procedures, etc.) must reinforce the policies; and the structures must allow for creative practices.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
I actually created a mini-poster and outline to keep my priorities upfront. It's so easy to lose focus in busy schools: https://t.co/4U9RKi3eS0#leadupchat

Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A4: The acquisition of meaningful relationships needs to be as important as the acquisition of meaningful skills. Every child needs to leave school with the knowledge that a new set of adults cares a great deal about them. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Which means it can't be "us" versus "them" - when teachers see a behavior or academic issue that needs addressed, parents need to support rather than defend. #leadupchat
A4 For my elementary Ss, develop an understanding that we are constantly learning. Everyone will grow at their own pace the school year. The important factor is to always strive towards growth. Develop the attitude that learning is fun and useful! #BoldSchool#leadupchat
I learned a great tip this week at #cfisddlc from @TopDogTeaching - shift from making/reviewing RULES this year and make NORMS instead, where everyone has input on what they need their environment to look/sound like to be successful #BoldSchool#leadupchat
Agreed - we all need to find the thing or things that ground us. We are continually asked to give of ourselves, summer is time to spiritually, mentally, & emotionally recharge. #LeadUpChat#boldschool
#leadupchat#boldteach. A4: I'm extending this to teachers and staff as well: I hope that we ALL work on our fear of vulnerability. We will accomplish so much more if we can work through fears of failure, being embarrassed, worthiness, etc.
Love this, @rlfreedm ! My son's K teacher let us know at the beginning of last year to create a folder because we would want to save pics, videos, etc. She was absolutely right. This old dog learned new tricks from her about excellent communication with parents! #LeadUpChat

@heffrey I'd love to be a part of a chat on how to build bridges between parents and school. Always seeking for new and innovative ways to do this.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
Let's not use safety and security of our students as a barrier to keep our parents out of our schools. Anytime we can build a bridge, and not a wall, with open doors, communication, & opportunities for them to meaningfully plug in we should. #Noexcuses#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool

Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
I have a classroom FB page that I invite the Ps to follow where I post pics of S collab. finished assignments & vids of my lessons. They love it and the Ss love that they love it. I call at least 5 Ps a week for positive or neg. reasons, usually positive. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
During the first week of school we always talk about the history of people, race, geography, difference/similarities--we set the stage for inclusion. https://t.co/BOugOYlORE#leadupchat
A4: We could all say the clinical answer. "close the gap, make AYP, ...." but what we all want is for our S's is to learn to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and down right good human beings! #leadupchat
A3: Parents should be patient at the start of the school year. It is a time of adjustment. Don't be quick 2 judge a class. 1 parent once told me that their daughter said the 1st day, "I'm not sure about this new English teacher." It was her favorite class that year. #leadupchat
A3 BE INVOLVED-no matter the age of your child. Instead of asking how their day was(which you’ll get the answer “fine”)-ask them to teach you something they learned today in each subject. Phones don’t replace parent involvement—attend meetings, talk to teachers, etc #leadupchat

A4: I want students to know they are safe and loved. We will help them achieve their goals. We are there for them because they are the reason we exist. Kids First. Always. #leadupchat
Many students get the idea that "work hard" means "play hard" and turn in work that "looks done." We have to build a joy in the 6 Cs of deeper learning. #leadupchat
A4 We also give some early learning-to-learn lessons such as how the brain works, how Ss can lead their learning, ways to collaborate successfully--the start of year is all about readiness for learning, setting that learning stage. #leadupchat
A5. We are lucky to have two dedicated professionals to support Ts in their classrooms with implementation. Find a creative way to have go to experts. If Ts are comfortable with #edtech they will use it purposefully and productively. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A4. Every year, I start the first day off by telling my students:
“They say that your favorite class is the one that you like the most. But your best class is the one where you learn the most. If we both do our jobs right, this class will be both.”
#BoldSchool#LeadupChat
A4. My wishes for every student:
1. Equal access to high quality instruction, effective educators, & resources
3. Equal opportunities to follow your dreams
4. Exposure to meaningful experiences
5. Powerful relationships that matter
6. Love-lots of it
#leadupchat#boldschool
A4) We need to bottom line it for kids...
make kids' time worth it...it should be a sin to waste a kid's time.
Kids want to know "will I be able to use any of this stuff in the future?"
Kids want to create and learn and solve. Are you doing this?
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: I think one of the most vital ways is to be purposeful with your PD. Make it hands-on, ongoing, and supportive. Have teachers experiment in a staff meeting and then offer to come into their classrooms to support implementation.
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Skills are more important than information in today’s world. Every child who graduates from high school should have a thorough background in communication and soft skills.
#leadupchat
A5: We are an #AppleDistinguishedSchool and strive to innovate, lead and inspire. That means giving teachers permission to take risks and support student expression and engagement through devices, without losing the personal connection. #Leadupchat#BoldSchool
When I sent out an email to 150 families, only 10% responded. Left voice messages and I'm now up to 75%....but that was about 6 hrs of phoning. #leadupchat
A5: This is both my specialty & the hardest for me to achieve. With an online based bLended curriculum we must focus on continuing the rigorous expectations. It provides flexibility but the key is tracking progress, setting goals, & ensuring that milestones are met. #LeadUpChat
A5: I attended the @iste#iste18 conference last month and would like to ensure that Ts are using the SAMR model to plan as well as making the learning accessble to all Ss by discovering new technologies that can be applied such as @Flipgrid@Buncee#boldschool#leadupchat
A4. Every year, I start the first day off by telling my students:
“They say that your favorite class is the one that you like the most. But your best class is the one where you learn the most. If we both do our jobs right, this class will be both.”
#BoldSchool#LeadupChat
A5 Our biggest #edtech move this year is hopefully moving all of our students to blog based digital portfolios. We hope it will be a way for students to share and celebrate their learning and show growth over time. #leadupchat
Q5: I’m in a position where I will be delivering #blendedlearning PD to an entire school district this year. I want the teachers to understand that #EdTech acts as the accelerator to the great things they are already doing. #LeadUpChat#boldschool
I’m sad to leave early but I have a 4 year old ready to play in the sunshine today! Can’t wait to read later the additional questions and comments! Thanks for the amazing questions this morning and dialogue! #BoldSchool#leadupchat
A5: #EdTech will not be a "special event". It will be a support system to build a solid learning environment. #Blendedlearning should reflect trust and clear expectations. Should promote innovation and a growth mindset! Embrace failure and celebration successes! #leadupchat
A5: I see #edtech as a way to provide kids with choice, to meet the needs of various learners, to informally assess, and to help kids collaborate while modeling digital literacy and citizenship. #leadupchat#boldschool
A5: This year, our district will have virtual learning days where Ss are at home during staff days. I’m looking forward to the possibilities of tech learning through these days. Also, last year in January we became a 1:1 school so we will have new opportunities. #LeadUpChat
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Do you ask your class for feedback on this? It would be powerful data collection. “What would make this both your favorite and the one your learn the most from?” #leadupchat
I really enjoyed reading @tomfriedman book that discusses tech as "intelligent assistants" so I use tech in every way that intelligently assists Ss--it is integrated in almost everything we do, but not always the focus of what we are doing. #leadupchat
A5) Technology is an accelerator. Having taught and led in a 1:1 environment since my first day in teaching, I know that it's not all about a laptop or a program. It's using those responsibly to enhance and differentiate learning for our students.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
It’s what I find that they need the most. Once they believe that they can do it and get a taste of success in something they are passionate about, their drive kicks in and the sky is the limit! They HAVE to believe in themselves first! #LeadUpChat
A5: I always try to remember that if #edtech is not being used efficiently it’s because the teachers & admin may not know HOW to use it efficiently. Purposeful PD and support when needed are great places to start. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: With #edtech it is always important to start with the instructional problem first and then pick the best tool whether it’s tech or not. NO MORE TECH TRAININGS! Let’s have pedagogy sessions with some tech in them. Also, keep it simple. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A4 Parents need to know the amount of work, care, and mental time that goes into a single lesson. Parents need to know that teachers are professionals and as such they are moving deliberately toward a goal for all kids.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A5: Just spent a week at #kti2018 KeystoneTech Innovators Summit. So many new tech tools in my belt to apply to voice & choice options. Looking to Hattie for effect size strategies and planning for engagement #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: It is one of our 4 CIP Strategies: Collective Efficacy, Evidence Based Decision Making, Instructional Model, and Effective Integration of Technology #LeadUpChat
A5: After hearing @Wes_Kieschnick speak at a few events this summer & reading #BoldSchool I am vowing to focus on the content objectives & picking the best tool to achieve that goal. #leadupchat
Do you ask your class for feedback on this? It would be powerful data collection. “What would make this both your favorite and the one you learn the most from?” #leadupchat
A5. Teaching students to #unplug is just as important as teaching with #edtech. Be sure technology isn't overpowering the classroom & the learning. Use it with purpose, not just because it is there. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Thanks :) Equally important is for staff members to feel like they belong to the school community, their contributions impact kids, and we're working together for a higher purpose #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A5: Utilize tech when it can be used as tools for authentic creation, collaboration, and deeper learning!
LEGO robotics
Podcasts
Flipgrid
Virtual Reality
Maker spaces
#leadupchat
A5 Example - I'm reading a fascinating book about Chinese history that references all kinds of music--every time a new music piece was referenced, I played it on my iPhone which brought greater meaning to the text. So many ways to integrate. #leadupchat
A5. Learning is the first objective. Our goal is to ensure students learn. Technology is one of many resources that may be used if it makes learning more effective or efficient. It should enhance quality instruction-supplement not supplant! #LeadUpChat#boldschool
A5: When are design their lessons encourage them to have a tech components fuel the learning and as a way to support learning but not replace the opportunity to problem solve and engage. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: We have to recognize that technology is not the teacher. Don't use tech for the sake of using it. Plan your outcomes and then research the tech/strategy that helps your students meet those outcomes. A wise person once said... #leadupchat@Wes_Kieschnick
Very true...but I have also found that comfort should not be an impediment to implementation...
So often, our students need the opportunity to experiment just as much as our teachers...
Learn a new tool together!
#leadupchat#BoldSchool
A3 Parents need to know the amount of work, care, and mental time that goes into a single lesson. Parents need to know that teachers are professionals and as such they are moving deliberately toward a goal for all kids.#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A5: I teach visual arts so there is very little technology when creating. However, tech is an essential component at the start (research) or to support the process (technical). The Ss access it at their own pace when it benefits them. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5- #edtech is not something we do. #blendedlearning is not something we do. Good teaching is good teaching, with tech or without it. We need to remember not to chase the fads & focus on what helps kids learn & grow #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A4: As a 6th grade only campus that blends 6 feeder Elementarys...embrace our differences and our uniqueness and come BACK together as one AMAZING future Longhorn graduating family! Our House system helps tremedously with this! #leadupchat#4housesonelonghornfamily
A5 - I hope to use #edtech to engage students and empower student voice, especially using @Flipgrid. I see technology as a means for learning, not an end. I need to keep clear goals for learning so that tech use doesn't become an end in itself. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5) Q5 makes me think of Mike Schmoker and his book Focus. Three things we must do consistentently—analyze what we teach, how we teach it, and to use effective literacy strategies. #leadupchat
Using Google Draw for math classroom is a great way to help Ss turn complex concepts into memorable visuals. Learning in multiple ways via online/offline vital in today's world, and more fulfilling too. #leadupchat
A4 I want our students to learn respect, responsibility, community, collaboration, initiative, and integrity. These are the foundation of a successful, happy, and socially beneficial life in school and out.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSChool
A5: learning strategies and resources from colleagues. There are a lot of resources within our own district/school. I think allowing students freedom to use technology for learning outcomes is important too! #leadupchat
A5: #EdTech for my new role will consists of coaching my teachers to use @Seesaw as the primary use of the electronic portfolios. We'll work on using Seesaw to allow parents to see "IN" daily. #leadupchat
Q4: Prioritizing outcomes for the coming school year is critical. What do you most want students to accomplish/learn/develop in 2018/19? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: I commit to ensuring #edtech is used as a tool and not as pedagogy or substitution. This will require reflective conversations w/Ts about their use of tech, talking to students, and a growth opportunity for me as well! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: A Q for the Age of Information, indeed. I think step one is realizing the possibility that sometimes no tech is the best tech. Just that awareness alone will open up opps to most appropriate integration of resources to maximize effective instruction. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
We're also leveraging tech to enhance students' agency - give them tools to take ownership over their learning and be more empowered. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5 - I hope to use #edtech to engage students and empower student voice, especially using @Flipgrid. I see technology as a means for learning, not an end. I need to keep clear goals for learning so that tech use doesn't become an end in itself. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Love that - no more tech trainings! Yes! Focus on instructional strategies, not tools! Tech is great, but it MUST be purposeful! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A5: With #edtech it is always important to start with the instructional problem first and then pick the best tool whether it’s tech or not. NO MORE TECH TRAININGS! Let’s have pedagogy sessions with some tech in them. Also, keep it simple. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5 So true, plus tech can be the great equalizer providing all kinds of Ss with the intelligent assistance they need to read, write, draw, understand, share, curate, analyze. . . .#leadupchat
A3) As a admin I appreciate it when parents simply show grace as we will make mistakes the first weeks but we love your kids! I want parents to know a simple thank you does mean a lot to teachers.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: #edtech is part of the blend. Staff will be intentional to meet personalized learning needs: pick it up where it motivates, include it when it can innovate, open the world to our students, and keep in mind that face-to-face skills are critical. #leadupchat#boldschool
A5- we are a blended learning district so focus is understanding “when” kids should use tech. and “how” to deepen learning exp. Tech should help get to Quadrant D (rigor relevance framework). But most important- relationships and personalizing the exp. #boldschool#leadupchat
Q5 Wellbeing can be used as a guide to our professional/personal tech use. If we begin to suffer in our social/community/purpose wellbeing as our use and dependence on tech we begin to struggle. Wellbeing is our guide to a life well lived and in balance. #leadupchat
A3: As a school if we can set the stage for hope & curiosity by embedding them into our instruction, our conversations, & our supports, the S’s will have more buy-in & begin making early gains. #ShortWinsBuildMomentum#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool@Wes_Kieschnick
Q3: What do you wish parents knew about the first weeks of school? What advice would you offer them to support their children, teachers, and the school/district at large in those opening weeks? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5- #edtech is not something we do. #blendedlearning is not something we do. Good teaching is good teaching, with tech or without it. We need to remember not to chase the fads & focus on what helps kids learn & grow #leadupchat#BoldSchool
As a 1:1 & @GoogleForEdu reference district our Ss tell us that nothing will replace quality teaching & learning opportunities UNRELATED to the technology they are using. Technology is not a silver bullet. It is a great servant, but terrible master.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5 - On Implementing New Tech in the Classroom
Before I use a new tool/gadget, I want to make sure it helps and doesn't hinder cognition...
https://t.co/AtZKmnAFtL#boldschool#leadupchat
Q6 Find and post a gif and/or picture that best captures the culture you’d like to cultivate this year. Give us a quick explanation to accompany the imagery. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
For sure! Using #EdTech to provide choice is why I think it’s so great! One student can make a digital poster, one can blog, and one can record a podcast. Multiple students, don’t have to turn in the same product! #ChoiceandVoice#LeadUpchat#BoldSchool
A5: Even though I am an #edtech nerd🤓(as my #KYGoDigital peeps know), tech itself is never the goal. However, if we're preparing our Ss to CREATE a better future, then tech is a component we can't ignore. Know your goal, be a risk-taker & empower Ss. #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A5 Using Google Suite throughout school, but also "blend" it so that tech does not become idolized as the panacea to fix all the ills of education. Use the vast array of tools to spice up lessons and units.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5(2): Also with #edtech, always ask the question of why you are using something, is it impress and distract or to do authentic work? If it does not increase student learning or make teachers lives easier, GET RID OF IT!!! #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
That they matter, their identity is valid, they deserve success, and they have an idea for how to achieve it. The biggest outcome should be a firm belief that adults care about them and their achievement. After that, all things are possible. #leadupchat
A5: Short answer...a HUGE role. :) #BlendedLearning requires effective implementation. The #edtech tool is only part of the equation. HOW a teacher uses the tool leads to impact. Requires tools, training & time. Time for planning, coaching & reflecting. #leadupchat#boldschool
Q5: What role will #edtech play in your 2018/19 school year? How do we make sure we approach #blendedlearning strategically so that rigorous & relevant outcomes, paired with high yield strategies, guide our tech use? #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Yes! I'd appreciate an example or suggestion if you're able to share. I'm always looking for more ways to emulate in the classroom and school. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5. All about the pedagogy before the tech. As a designer I can create experiences and offer Ss choices that involve tech tools to collaborate and communicate with the world. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: Tech is awesome...but it’s ONE resource...and shouldn’t replace solid teaching! We look for app/tools that getting our kids speaking & writing! In a world where their phone is connected to the hand...public speaking/writing is a lost art! Love @Flipgrid for this! #LeadUpChat
A5. Professional development should be focused on relevant uses for the individual teacher. Make sure those new to the technology aren't drinking from a fire hose during training. Support, Support, and more Support. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool A6: In science lessons and all learning experiences, we want to students to be doing the thinking, thee doing, the meaning making...
We need to keep focus on the instruction and look at tech as the tool or means of delivering the knowledge, cultivating understanding, assess mastery or curating evidence of mastery. We cannot lean on the tech to teach, it’s a tool to be utilized appropriately. #LeadUPchat
A6: We are a #TEAM#ONETEAM...we are in this together, for the students, for the school, for the community. In a school where the culture is positive, and clear expectations, learning with flourish! #leadupchat
A4. At a minimum, our struggling students need to meet grade level expectations. But even more importantly, students should learn to place the needs of others before their own while learning to responding appropriately to failure and not getting their way! #leadupchat#boldschool
A5 Tech, if used correctly is an amazing tool. Follow up on digital citizenship frequently and celebrate/share the successes of how Ss have utilized it effectively in understanding of subject matter! #leadupchat
A6: This wonderful work can’t be done alone. It must be done together- we are a team. We must create an unbreakable bond and with that strength, we will be unstoppable! #LeadUpChat
A5: would love to get Ts using two new tech tools consistently and effectively: FlipGrid and Padlet. Let them explore and share ways to have these tools extend the learning. #leadupchat#boldschool
A6: #boldschool#leadupchat Empower"mint" for Ts and Ss to have a bit of whimsy and playfulness while learning together and motivating each other to make a difference in the world.
Yes! I'd appreciate an example or suggestion if you're able to share. I'm always looking for more ways to emulate in the classroom and school. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
Effective coaching is essential! Training partnered with ongoing coaching is how the water gets to the end of the row. An empowered teacher will use the right tool at the right time to meet students' needs. #leadupchat#boldschool
Khan Academy is a fav. If a student doesn't demo understanding on a test or homework, I assign Khan. Khan sends them email w/link. The video & text hints provide learning options & I have some assurance the student filled that gap. #leadupchat
Thanks! Our SD is going toward Mind Up from @scholasticCDA I agree that we all need to use the same terminology. We have been implementing morning meetings but need to get buy in from all. I appreciate you sharing. #leadupchat#boldschool
A6. So hard to choose! Probably *that look* on my students faces, when they learned that we’d be taking a class trip to an abandoned 19th century insane asylum. #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
A4: The acquisition of meaningful relationships needs to be as important as the acquisition of meaningful skills. Every child needs to leave school with the knowledge that a new set of adults cares a great deal about them. #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5b: I highly recommend doing a #boldschool book study with your colleagues. It is a great way share blended learning strategies and use tech powerfully! #leadupchat
Yes! One of the most powerful and effective forms of PD is reflection. And it's got to be one of the least expensive. Admin has to create the time and space for it.
#LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A5: Our district does an excellent job of supporting Ts & Ss in this area. Continued PD in new #edtech areas is a must to ensure we stay relevant. Follow up to ensure T success & confidence is necessary! #leadupchat#BoldSchool
A6. We are a team. Everyone is unique. Each of us bring different talents to the table. If we work together we can achieve greatness for our school and our students! #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool
A1: I would say that educators need to spend the summer re-connecting. Re-Connect with spouse, children, your own parents and friends. That's also your support system during the year. #leadupchat
That can be a challenge when the topic is algebra, but I'm seeing it now with inquiry learning. My students get so excited in a math war that I had to put tennis balls on the chair legs because of all the bouncing around. #leadupchat
The word "ongoing" is the pivotal word. If we want #edtech to achieve the desired impact, we must provide ongoing support. #ChaseImpact by ensuring teachers know how and when to effectively use the tools to meet student needs. #leadupchat#boldschool
A6: For learning to occur, identifying purpose, providing feedback and challenge and offering space for reflection are essentials. Focus on the learning #LeadUpChat
A6 - these bulletin boards in our school say it all - we stress a positive attitude, growth mindset and kindness! If we use those 3 aspects - our kids are unstoppable! #BoldSchool#leadupchat
At every intake I ask the Ss to tell me about a time they were proud of themselves... sometimes that’s not an easy question. But we always find one, then I tell them ok, we are going to chase, use that passion & recreate that rock star moment for you here at school! #LeadUpChat
At every intake I ask the Ss to tell me about a time they were proud of themselves... sometimes that’s not an easy question. But we always find one, then I tell them ok, we are going to chase, use that passion & recreate that rock star moment for you here at school! #LeadUpChat
You learn so much about a teacher and a student when you ask them about that moment in their life where they felt most proud! That’s what drives them to improve! #LeadUPChat
Thank you to everyone at #LeadUpChat and #BoldSchool who joined in today for a most excellent conversation! A special thanks to @Wes_Kieschnick for being our guest. If you do not have a copy of Weston's book #BoldSchool, get one today! Lead Up and Lead On!
#LeadUpChat We all have to bring our best every day and all day! When we falter, our team has to rally and help out. #kidsDeserveIt They need to see our smiles, and know we care.
A6: Together We Create what we want in our educational environment, our culture, our professional learning, & our personal lives. Our schools’ successes are not dependent on “I” but we.” #LeadupChat#BoldSchool@Wes_Kieschnick
Orrrr maybe this one, when the @EquityMaps resulted in a PERFECT 50/50 breakdown of amount of time spoken in a Socratic Seminar divided along gender lines. #BoldSchool#LeadUpChat
Ed leaders-Are we doing what’s right for staff & students or what’s easy to do?
Consistently doing what’s right for kids takes more courage than I ever imagined. We don’t learn that in a #Leadership program.
Stay strong.
#SchoolCuture#WeLeadEd#satchat#edleadership#Leadupchat
A6: #LeadUpChat#BoldSchool I want students embrace mistakes & epic fails as these are integral to learning. Find the humour in everything (including what went wrong)!
August isn't going to cool down! It's only going to get hotter at #LeadUpChat! Join us as we roll further into our Summer Series next Saturday morning with @Dwight_Carter as our guest host.
WOW! Thank you for such a wonderful chat everyone. It was such a privilege to have the #BoldSchool chat crew join #LeadUpChat this morning. We are so grateful for the hospitality!
