Good evening! I have been a librarian at Orchard Farm High School for 15 years. Dig Cit is a part of my curriculum, so I had a personal interest in this project. #moedchat
Chris joining again tonight from SeMO: HS ELA and PDC Chair at Woodland R-IV #Wr4Cards. Plus not knowing how to handle all of the extra characters. I can finally expound in my true word nerd fashion #moedchat
A1: This is the time where students are alone more, parents loosen up, kids are driving, & bad choices affect their future in much bigger ways. #moedchat
A1: This is the age when students are starting to experiment with different interests, & the decisions they make online can negatively impact them for years 2 come. So important 2 teach now to protect digital footprint & be digital leader. #moedchat
A1: HS Ss are more likely to be putting themselves into "difficult" situations that get posted about online and are very likely to be seen by potential schools and employers. #moedchat
A1: We are protecting our students' reputations before they go into adulthood. It's preventative maintenance to insure that our kids are secure with success. #moedchat
A1 Hello. Joanne from Lee's Summit, Missouri. Secondary level students may be most vulnerable because they see social media as "theirs". Blind trust. #moedchat
A1 Safety is the first thing that comes mind, but it goes deeper into responsible democracy, kindness and respect for others. We live in a global society where tolerance is critical #moedchat
A1: We can’t wait until hs to start these discussions. Training should begin early as we have ms students unaware of the negative impact poor choices will make later. #moedchat
I think this is our biggest charge - not to just preach about the bad things that can happen but to show them how the online world can help them and others. #moedchat
A1 Because as with all things, they will learn one way or the other. If we want them to learn how to be productive citizens (digital and "IRL") then we can include authentic opportunities to learn this. #moedchat
A2: I feel it's important to survey the students & the parents to find out what topics are of concern to them. We used that data to determine the topics of each presentation. #moedchat
A2: For true engagement, students must have a voice in the topics discussed. We sent out a survey to collect data which determined the sessions offered at our #teendigcit day. #moedchat
A1 My Digital Footprints - Digital Presence - Digital Civility page https://t.co/KH8WUTx6Qq#moedchat Students still do not understand what they put on SM stays there & could affect future jobs.
A2 As others have said, talk to the students. And parents. Let them influence topics for this day. Doesn't just have to be about the "evils" of the online world. So many great, great resources are available too -- such as this PLN! Kids can have that too #moedchat
A2: Define good appropriate humor. Provide role playing opportunities. "What if . . ." scenarios. Understand to take time to think before submitting. Have Ss trace their own digital footprints. #moedchat
A2b focus digital citizenship discussions on the character traits successful people have and make connections, have employers speak to how social media can factor into employment #moedchat
A2: in some places though, Ps and Ss may not know of any concerns. So, like anything else we do, it all depends on what the Ss need. It should be a mix of the "bewares" and the "lookie heres" #moedchat
Showing them how to develop a PLN and help them create their "brand" is so important! We found that many students didn't realize that they should be following professionals in areas that are their passions! #moedchat
Love that phrase "bewares and lookie heres" Sometimes we only talk to Ss about the terrible stuff associated with SM while benefitting as adults from the great things that can be available. #moedchat
That was one area we wanted to work on - to have a panel of employers talk about social media in the work place and so on. Hearing it from the horse's mouth is so much more impactful! #moedchat
Our survey of the students was anonymous, and I think that's important in order for them to feel more open and honest about what concerns they have. #moedchat
Good exercise having Ss Google their names. Discuss digital tattoo or footprint. Share WayBackMachine and MODEL appropriate posts. Provide opportunities to post to class/school accounts. #moedchat
A2: Define good appropriate humor. Provide role playing opportunities. "What if . . ." scenarios. Understand to take time to think before submitting. Have Ss trace their own digital footprints. #moedchat
A3: We sent out survey 2 parents & community members 4 topics. When searching 4 presenters, we spread word via email & social media, probing great minds 2 get contacts. We also did some Google searching 4 presenters. Having a PLN is crucial when searching 4 presenters. #moedchat
A3: It takes a village, that's for sure! Everyone knows someone. Connections between parents, alumni, colleagues, & friends is the best way to gather ideas & presenters. A PLN is important for the success of this day. #moedchat
A3 Contact the Chamber of Commerce or look at your LinkedIn contacts. I did a presentation for grandparents who were raising their grandkids. Well recieved! #moedchat
A3. Reach out to companies that support and promote this endeavor. For example, @Mastercard provides lessons (& the teachers) for #Love2Code week. #moedchat
Showing them how to develop a PLN and help them create their "brand" is so important! We found that many students didn't realize that they should be following professionals in areas that are their passions! #moedchat
A3 Important to build good relationships with community organizations & businesses. My School-Business Partnership page https://t.co/cqwavixQBK#moedchat
A3 we have several hr personnel at area businesses. Employers can provide real life stories. Our SRO can discuss consequences, and our tech director can provide support for students to begin developing their digital profiles. #moedchat
A3 - I'd probably go to my PLN. Could also try to reach out to some YouTubers, Maybe some involved students. I really need to give this question some more thought! #moedchat
A3: we'd have to go wide as we're a very small community, but I'd want pros who use it for good and others who can attest to the dark side of social media/the web in general or business leaders to come in & run their searches on our Ss & state if they'd hire them or not #moedchat
What a great idea!!!! I'm sure that really helped with the generation gap there and helping them understand the positives and negatives of the online world! #moedchat
A3: Go to the sports/activities booster clubs. That's where business leaders are found. Reach out to church youth group leaders. Some local cable companies have their own community channel ask for feedback there. #MOedchat
We are having students create a digital portfolio of their accomplishments and successes, and they will be using this information to create a Google Site about themselves. #moedchat
We are also going to have students create a list of topics that they are interested in and then search for professionals that they should be following in those areas of interest that will help expand their world & skills. #moedchat
We are having students create a digital portfolio of their accomplishments and successes, and they will be using this information to create a Google Site about themselves. #moedchat
Oooo, that would be so cool! Maybe randomly pick 10 students before the event, have business leaders run searches and bring the results to the event. #moedchat
During the presentations, we found that students were most engaged when the speakers talked about real examples, real things, good or bad, that had happened. #moedchat
A4: Prior to and during the event, our HS Ts led discussions with their homeroom class. We made sure to keep our Ts in the loop on the schedule of the day. A survey to collect input from the Ts would also be a great way to involve and engage them. #moedchat
A4: We should have surveyed the teachers for input on topics covered. Teachers led discussion in their homeroom after the presentations, so they answered questions & got students to really think about topics. For good discussion, teachers must have buy-in 4 the topics.#moedchat
Love this! I share 'why' I follow certain accounts on our school Instagram & Twitter. Would be helpful exercise for them to find and evaluate professionals & organizations that grow their interests, etc. #moedchat
We are also going to have students create a list of topics that they are interested in and then search for professionals that they should be following in those areas of interest that will help expand their world & skills. #moedchat
A4: have then tell their own stories; analyze their own digcit; evaluate their own online presence; describe what they should do more/less of #moedchat
I love that you mention this because we had our teachers reflect on their social media and online behavior in a PD event after our Dig Cit Summit. It was great, great, great conversation! #moedchat
A4: Express that ALL Ts are needed for this, like it or not. Teachers should share their own experiences. Encourage involvement with JEANS. Ts do a lot for a pair of jeans while Ps will come in for a bowl of chili. #MOedchat
A5: In a perfect world, we would have liked to structure our #teendigcit day into small groups. With the constraints of a half-day, large groups of students, and minimal presenters, we rotated sessions by grade level. Flexibility is key! #moedchat
A5: Chose 1/2day & scheduled presentations 2 fill time. Students spent entire day rotating thru sessions in grade level groups, learning & discussing Dig Cit topics. Wish groups had been smaller, & wish we had more sessions & students chose out of a list. #moedchat
A5: Panel of speakers to start and get everyone settled; specific examples with discussion; breakouts on more specifics wrap up with evaluation and reflection. #moedchat
A5: The availability of different sessions for Ss, Ts, and parents to choose would be my starting point. Have them attend multiple sessions according to their interests. #MOedchat
A5 Ideally, keep groups small allowing for deep discussions. There needs to be trust and a non-judgemental atmosphere absent of preaching. Lots of examples. #moedchat
A5. Begin with keynote, use a modified Edcamp format, if possible procure "giveaways" . Challenge for the students to take their new learning back their home schools. #moedchat
This is something that we want to change for future summits. We based the presentation on the overall survey results. Would have loved to have more sessions and they got to choose a schedule. #moedchat
Q5: INTERACTIVE with transitions galore. 30 minute breakout sessions: 20 of total S involvement, 10 of reflection/student feedback surveys. Upon the second hour of an EdDigiCamp have Ss create their own sessions of discussion time and interactive creativity. #MOedchat

For our summit, students were in small groups of 15 for discussion and reflection, but I wish the presentations had been in smaller groups, more like break-out sessions than an assembly. #moedchat

I have to duck out for the night. I look forward to reading through the rest of the chat and stealing the fantastic ideas of others! Good night #moedchat
A6: @julnilsmith & @joshchoward are the bomb! Cliff Smith of Parameters Security -amazing tips on protecting identity & avoiding spam, phishing & hackers. Local law enforcement 4 cyber crimes. Be sure that presenters talk in positive ways, not just how internet is bad. #moedchat
Use this kit with Ss from grades 3-8. Discussions are deeper as Ss get older, and objects help solidify and spur reflection. https://t.co/62JC5zFekU#moedchat
Bonus: Don't do it on a Friday. Share with parents how important the day is - many parents let students stay at home because there were no classes. There are not many people who present on these topics, so finding presenters was tough, especially on limited budget. #moedchat
Bonus: Finding presenters that present on #digcit topics, 1/2 day on a Friday affected attendance, large groups vs small groups, & informing parents of the importance of the event. #moedchat
To avoid there being no experts on the topics, they might need to be pre-determined. This is great question that will make me think more on this! #moedchat

Bonus: Kids will have poor attitudes along with staff. You need the right cheer squad to motivate and the right content to communicate. Hand out free water and invest in some fun breakout time: racing, jumpy houses, dance offs. Film the positive. #MOedchat
On the way out a student came up and shook my hand. Told me he "learned so much today" and he thanked me. Great Ss at #ofarmpride. It was a pleasure to work with you and your school community. #moedchat
