Hi Elizabeth a librarian from Guernsey joining in. A1 I would say that generally speaking reading for pleasure is lost in school. Not much room for choice, so pleasure is difficult to foster. #ukedchat
A1 fostering reading for pleasure comes from leading by example and teachers need to demonstrate their love of reading too. Do as I do not do as I say #ukedchat
A1 We engage KS3 students in an accelerated reading programme where students are required to read fiction books, in a hope to boost reading for pleasure. Result has been students becoming turned off reading for pleasure. #ukedchat
I've written a very personal blog about bereavement and the death of my Dad. I wrote it after a discussion on Facebook about supporting children who had recently lost a parent. https://t.co/VQFNspPAcm
A2 there are so many great ideas out there to promote reading for pleasure. Ask your librarian into your classroom to do a book talk on the subject you are about to start. Author visits and competitions work. Teachers talking about what they are reading is great too. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A1 - reading for pleasure should be fostered at school, but silent reading can feel like a chore and some schools 'reading schemes' have ancient books that disengage.
I believe that reading aloud exciting books will encourage children to pick up books
A1 - I worry that sometimes it's forced. But as long as you champion reading - any reading at all, hopefully the interest develops. There is such a massive magical universe to explore when you read! #ukedchat
A2. Through @slsguernsey authors are invited to Guernsey and do school visits. Often results in a spike in interest in their work. Librarians are involved in all schools, my wife's KS2 class are read books by a school librarian every Weds, which they are excited by. #ukedchat
A2 - possible measuring reading levels and labelling kids, making them read things they might not want to. The interest develops at different times for different kids. But it is SO important to be able to read - hard to find the balance #ukedchat
Yes, give them time to look in the library and stop rushing them to make a choice. Allow them to stop reading something they are not enjoying. Reading is an adventure not a chore! #ukedchat
A1. Reading for pleasure should definitely be fostered at school. I've done away with anything that puts a "barrier" up between a child and reading - lending schemes, only change a book on a Wednesday, only go to the library when its your slot etc - all nonsense. #UKEdChat
My previous school in England did DEAR - for 20 minutes a day the whole school day was supposed to stop and read - either independently or for lower abilities staff were encouraged to read to students. #ukedchat
A3 No the type of reading does not matter. Encouraging them to read other things is also ok. Finding the right book for that child is still something that can be worked on but not forced. #ukedchat
A3. I think as long as children are reading/are being read to then the type or topic (as long as age appropriate) shouldnโt matter! Find something they like and then branch off and open their eyes and minds to other texts/topics etc! #UKEDchat
It is something I read about recently and am about to start with a reading group I look after. They love me reading aloud to them I think they will get even more out of a good actors voice :) #ukedchat
A3. Developing an interest in reading is the most important aspect. Allow students to choose books about topics that interest them - wizards, sports, make up, warfare etc. Reading for fun can be about anything. This may develop into independent reading for learning #ukedchat
A3 I envisage two types of reading. Reading for pleasure (extra curricular) in which case personal interest should be a factor. And Reading for interpretation of https://t.co/BcojqPQkvx case studies, extracts, mathematical understanding #ukedchat
A3 - Not sure on the science of it (ironically) but i'm sure it engages the brain in special ways. How many times have you read a book, then saw the movie and, 1. scenes were as you imagined and 2. thought, 'not as good as the book'. An interest fires up that magic #ukedchat
I agree that is why it is so important for your school library to have a wide range of resources. Comics, easy reads, manga, anything that will hook them in. #ukedchat
Q3 if weโre fostering reading for pleasure then anything that is age and ability appropriate is suitable. An autistic child may not read anything except one topic but theyโre still reading. #ukedchat
A1 Reading for pleasure can be fostered at school through careful choice of text and story time at the end of each day. Chn who groan when you have to stop because it is home time have developed a love of books. #ukedchat
A2. I spent a lot of time looking into this, especially aimed at motivating reluctant boys to read more. I came across this set of posters (admittedly a few years ago) - nice idea... but my word, they chose the wrong type of "celeb" to inspire young boys to read... #UKEdChat
As long as they are enjoying it then great. It does give you the opportunity to push other books their way. Giving them a choice but not forcing is essential. #ukedchat
Retweeted Elizabeth Hutchinson (@Elizabethutch):
@TheScienceBreak Yes, give them time to look in the library and stop rushing them to make a choice. Allow them to stop reading something they are not enjoying. Reading is an adventure not a chore! #ukedchat
A3 - but sometimes you do have to read something difficult and uninteresting. There is no way a child will have a big interest in all there subjects at school. So developing reading skills might not make something interesting, but possibly less painful to read! #ukedchat
A4. Will forever love The Tiger Who Came For Tea. Letters from the Lighthouse by @emmac2603 Once by Morris Gleitzman, Revolting Rhymes by Dahl and Harry Potter. Some from my own childhood and some Iโve come to recently with my own class #ukedchat
A4 my favourite book was The Folk of the Faraway tree. I always wanted to go down the slippery slip on a cushion from Moonfaced. When I was older it was Sue Barton student nurse... Nursing was it for me. Not sure how I became a librarian really! #ukedchat
yes too often I hear teachers saying 'you have 5 mins now hurry up' as they come into the library. My guess is they pick up the first book they see. #ukedchat
A4 - My favourite books were the Chronicles of Narnia, Just William books and Swallows and Amazons sets. Reading some of these gave me an in-road to learning about life in different times. #ukedchat
A4 - oh my gosh, if you haven't read 'Room on the Broom' drop everything and get a copy! Anyone else or just me?
"the witch tapped her broomstick and.... #ukedchat
A4 - my favourites change all the time! Light Jar and Tin are currently favourites. But Indian in the cupboard, Cosmic, Edward Tulane and Varjak Paw are up there too! #ukedchat
A2 to motivate: group reading activities with time to explore a book. A mix of fiction and non fiction. A teacher who shares enthusiasm for reading. Demotivate: lots of tests, any labelling that means they feel they are not a good reader. #ukedchat
I am always amazed when staff do marking or other prep during reading time. The idea that it's not important or pleasurable gets embedded by seeing adults refuse to prioritise it because they have other, more important things to do #ukedchat

A5 Teachers should been seen reading and talking about books. Set up a teachers reading group in the school library at lunch time. Classroom doors should show what the teacher is reading. Displays with teachers and their favourite book goes down well too. #ukedchat
A5. We launched a Parents Champion Scheme at @DhoonSchool last year which sought to involve adults more in reading - especially helping and supporting with guided reading. Its been very successful. #UKEdChat
A3 for me reading anything is good. We have a school library and some chn pick similar books each time. Sometimes you would like those chn to widen the range of material but it is their choice. I respect that. #ukedchat
I have to say, our school librarian has a fire in her heart for reading. Made the dingy old, unloved library into a vibrant, buzzing place. Through pure, unadulterated, unapologetic passion. I wonder how many kids futures she has changed... #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A5. Positivity about reading spreads. reading for pleasure and sharing what Iโve read with my class. Mini book reviews and book recommendations. If only one child decides to pick one up, weโre winning.
I have run a radio station reading competition hosted by pupils. This encouraged reading for all pupils in each year group. Certificates and badges were handed out and some won free a free book. The show was broadcasted live during Friday lunchtimes.
In school through genuinely being a reader - lots of children borrow my books - and a number of parents who now pop in to borrow them too! We talk about them. tweet about them and pass them along! #UKEdchat
A5 we are having a big push in school on this. Creating a dialogue with children is essential...my class are always the most eager to read books I recommend or show excitement about. Modelling passion about and respect books is essential #ukedchat
A4 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because my fav teacher read it to our class when I was 8 or 9. Tilly's Time Machine by Ade Edmondson. Malala's Magic Pencil. The Journey. Lots of beautiful picture books suitable for all ages inc adults. #ukedchat
We do not have aschool librarian. I scan the books for my class so I am aware who likes to read what. Through story time I introduce new authors to the chn. It seems to work most of the time. #ukedchat
A6 basically if you can't read then technology is useless! Once you can read it can then be used to encourage more. We use @fictionexpress it is a great tool to encourage reading for pleasure. #ukedchat
A5: by showing enjoyment when reading, planning reading time into your day & talk8ng about how much youโre looking forward to it, model choice - if youโre really not enjoying a book, stop and find another one #ukedchat
#UKEdchat q5 - by showing we are committed to reading - members of our PTFA are working with me in school this weekend to set up our new library and the 100 books to read before you leave primary-valuing reading.
A6. Digital readers allow students to access '000s of books on devices, with some now giving audio too. Also those who struggle with reading can use sites like https://t.co/8cyHALQnhd . This will rewrite pasted text by replacing difficult words with easier text #ukedchat
A5 I ask the chn to read for 10 mins each day. Felt a bit of a hypocrite as I didn't do that myself. Started reading for at least 10 mins each evening a couple if yrs ago. Now my class ask me about what I've been reading! #ukedchat
A6: apps can provide exciting, interactive reading experiences to capture reluctant readers attention, book apps with audio can allow kids to listen over and over again whilst reading the text, helps them learn unfamiliar vocabulary #UKEdChat
Absolutely, encouraging all those parents standing outside into the school library to help their children choose a book. One of our school provides a school library drop in session once a term. Our librarian reads a story to whoever wants to listen #ukedchat
A6 - I wonder if tech makes kids get distracted more easily, or it encourages less stick-with-it-ness when it comes to reading because they (we all) want the information and we want it now! Might be a generation before we find out... #ukedchat
yes it is very unusual for a primary school to have a librarian. A shame but budgets usually don't stretch. We support all school libraries via @slsguernsey which works. #ukedchat
A7 - I know it's old but had a lasting impact - The Seven Habits. The one about focussing on what you can influence and not what you're worried about made a big difference. #ukedchat
A7 Usually the last one I read. The book whisperer is worth a read. I run an online book club for school library staff #nonfbc but if any teachers want to join in you are welcomehttps://ehutchinson44.wixsite.com/schoollibraries/online-book-club #ukedchat

A7. Teaching Backwards and Engaging Learners from @OTeaching have heavily influenced our whole-school philosophy at @DhoonSchool Great books ๐ #UKEdChat
Belated A4: answer would change depending on age but There May Be A Castle, Land of Neverendings & Nevermoor recent faves along with Knights of Borrowed Dark series #UKEdChat
A7 Elephant in the Classroom Jo Boaler, What's the Point of School? Guy Claxton, Bounce Matthew Syed, High Challenge, Low Threat Mary Myatt... #ukedchat
Well, to finish off, just wanted to share, I recently started reading a book about antigravity - I couldn't put it down.
Sorry (not really). Thanks for such a nice chat. ๐ #ukedchat
A8. Time, reflection, dialogue... and making sure that others have read it too so that there are people to have time, reflection and dialogue with! #UKEdChat
Due to some of the things I have been talking about on twitter with my colleagues, they have now asked me along to their book group to give alternative views @SarahPirouet#ukedchat
