Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Welcome to #21stedchat chat! Tonight's Topic is "Shifting Thinking from Compliance to Engagement for both students and educators" We will do Q & A – Please introduce yourself!
I am Jill from NC, Director of Personalized Digital Learning and #21stedchat co-founder with @dprindle (and we still haven't meet after all these years)
Hello #21stedchat! Lauren from NY - 6th grade English teacher and author of EMPOWER Your Students & Curriculum at Your Core. So excited about this topic!
Hello everyone! My name is Jessica Burton, and I am currently a junior at Stockton University. I look forward to participating this this chat! #21stedchat#GEN2108
Looks like it is going to be a fun and fast #21stedchat tonight as we have a lot of educators here! As a reminder, we will do Q & A style, I will Tweet our Q1 and you will reply with your Answer by doing A1....and so on.
Beyond excited to see so many pre-service teachers thinking about moving students beyond compliance. This is just what the future of teaching needs. ❤️#21stedchat
I am excited to be joining this chat tonight! It is awesome that our classes give us information about different twitter chats that are happening for education. #21stedchat
A1 Compliance does not equate to learning. There is no growth in it. Learning happens when authentic engagement is in effect with open minds. #21stedchat
Compliance creates a rule-based robotic citizenry. Engagement creates innovators and status quo challengers who help us reshape the future! #21stedchat
A1: In order to maximize our students potential, shifting the classroom environment from compliance to engagement will allow them to take their learning to understanding. #21stedchat
A1: Compliance is an outdated need from another era. To crush that paradigm, Ts and Ss need to engage with their world to develop an #InnovatorsMindset#21stedchat

A1 So much of school is about compliance—doing what it takes to get a good grade, avoid trouble, or just get through the day. What does any of that have to do with meaningful learning?
#21stedchat
A1 So much of school is about compliance—doing what it takes to get a good grade, avoid trouble, or just get through the day. What does any of that have to do with meaningful learning?
#21stedchat
A1 Students will not find joy in learning if it just involves compliance instead of engagement. The more the students are engaged, the more they will truly learn. #21stedchat
We need to shift our approach to engagement for students and teachers because I think that the only way that a person can truly learn is if they are mentally intimate with the source of their learning #21stedchat
My Student Engagement and Motivation page https://t.co/tLFvs48u0g Yes, students learn much more by being engaged and motivated to learn more on their own. #21stedchat
A1: Compliance doesn’t give us (Ts & Ss) anything other than a false sense of success, and if we are so tired of feeling Ss apathy, then we should prb try to engage them instead #21stedchat
A1. In 2018, we need to teach like it's 2018. Compliance education was "more acceptable" when technology did not exponentially increase what Ts and Ss can do in the classroom. #21stedchat
A1: Compliance doesn't allow any creative freedom. Engagement allows for students to branch out and find their interests and learn in a way that they enjoy which increases the probability they will retain the information #21stedchat
A1: If we continue with compliance thinking, then our students won't be able to learn as well. Engagement is the key to learning. You have to make sure your students are actively listening and engaging in lessons. #21stedchat

#21stedchat
But teachers who are only worried about being compliant to admin, will not create true engagement in their classrooms. Teachers must be fully engaged and move beyond compliance also. #21stedchat
A1: We need to shift to more engagement because compliance is an extremely outdated process, and the only way that a student can truly learn is if they become mentally intimate with the source of their learning. #21stedchat
A1 ~ Compliance just means that Ss are following the classroom / school rules! It doesn’t mean that Ss are engaged in the learning activities or will be able to apply what they have “learned” to new situations! #21stedchat
A1 Engagement leads to tons of opportunities to be involved in learning whereas compliance just sitting and doing what you're told. If students are engaged they won't get bored. I always found that if I was bored in school I was less likely to participate in class #21stedchat
Great point. What would happen if we whittled away at the compliance construct? Would that be the death of schools and education as we know it? #21stEdChat
A1 So much of school is about compliance—doing what it takes to get a good grade, avoid trouble, or just get through the day. What does any of that have to do with meaningful learning?
#21stedchat
A1: Compliance does not build successful relationships, or create the intrinsic motivation needed to continue education. Engagement fosters better attitudes towards learning. #21stedchat
A1: While compliance is an important component, engagement means the students are excited about what they are meaning which means they are forming ideas and opinions and wanting to make their own decisions. #21stedchat
I agree! It is important for students to be creative and branch out. Students find learning more enjoyable when they can make connections to their life as well! #21stedchat
It’s even worse than that: they learn how to be compliant with whatever those in power demand. They learn to chase happiness and comfort instead of living meaningful and purposeful lives. #21stedchat
A1 So much of school is about compliance—doing what it takes to get a good grade, avoid trouble, or just get through the day. What does any of that have to do with meaningful learning?
#21stedchat
No, I don't think so at all. Students who are engaged take ownership through active and authentic learning strategies based on their needs and goals along with having voice and choice in their tasks. #21stEdChat
I don't know... I'd venture to say that I "learned" in compliance based education model. That being said, usually only when I was interested in the subject or even the teacher. Things would have been way different if I had learned in non-compliance... #21stedchat
A1. compliance generally means Ss are doing and learning what someone else thinks they need or should do... not what they are interested in or good at #21stedchat
A1: When we engage students, we are encouraging their learning. Learning should be authentic and meaningful. When Ts and Ss comply too much, we stop taking risks can be great! #21stedchat

A1: While compliance is an important component, engagement means the students are excited about what they are meaning which means they are forming ideas and opinions and wanting to make their own decisions. #21stedchat
True! Teachers need to find ways to make the learning enjoyable to students, and usually that is through creativity and connecting to their interests as well! #21stedchat
A2. We need to be asking questions like @jcasap "When I talk to students, I don’t ask them what they want to be when they grow up, I ask them what problem do they want to solve?” #21stedchat
A2: Should feel free! Having the ability to try new things, have choice, be willing to fail and learn from failure. Engagement = authenticity #21stEdChat
Amen! I left my last job, partly to all the compliance activities we had to do to fill a binder in the office for district admin and AdvancEd. #21stedchat
A2: Engagement looks like students willingly wanting to explore a topic further rather than being told to, and it feels natural rather than forced. For educators it looks and feels like you are opening new roads for students to explore rather than just one #21stedchat
I think that for me engaging would be students having more of a conversation with the teacher and asking questions, rather than just listening to lecture. #21stedchat
A2. We need to be asking questions like @jcasap "When I talk to students, I don’t ask them what they want to be when they grow up, I ask them what problem do they want to solve?” #21stedchat
A2: For educators, observing S understanding by listening to their peer communitions, asking questions, giving feedback; Ss are curious and on task. It's dreamy! #21stedchat
A2: Engagement for educators looks like providing feedback for student work. Engagement for students looks like active participation and involvement in the lesson. #21stedchat
A1: education has and was about compliance. Learn to be a good worker. That was the model of education. There needs to be a mind shift that supports and appreciates free thinking that challenges traditional way of doing school.
#21stedchat
When a student is engaged in a topic, they have a want to understand and know more about the topic. Then they continue building off the info they are getting. The teacher is able to respond to questions and help.
#21stedchat#w200
I think you're equating compliance and good behavior. I think we are referring to compliance as in... Here is the info, now comply and give me the same exact thing... Okay. Grade: A+. #21stedchat
A2: There is a lot of discussion and collaboration going on, students and teachers are interested in the topic, and students are actively understanding the concept. #21stedchat
A2 For teachers and students, engagement means seeing how their learning, their work, and their relationships can be expressions of their values.
#21stedchat
A2: I think that for me engaging would be students having more of a conversation with the teacher and asking questions, rather than just listening to lecture. #21stedchat
the action or fact of complying with a wish or command. Just saying if I create right environment for engagement, ss will be compliant according to the definition above. #21stEdChat
A1: Compliance based learning creates learners that know how to follow a rule book, focusing on getting to the next goal. Engagement based learning encourages students to become creative, problem-solvers. #21stedchat
A2 Engagement looks like the students getting excited about what they're learning and it feels like an opportunity to really try things out for themselves in a fun way/ For educators, it's a chance to join in on the fun and be a part of the excitement they're feeling #21stedchat
A2: With engagement, students do not want to be forced into doing something, but rather have the need or feeling to. As for educators, they want more options for their students. #21stedchat#GEN2108
A2: There’s this palpable buzz in the classroom, not just busy work. Ss are doing different activities to arrive at a solution to the problem they want to solve. #21stedchat
A2: engagement looks like lets learn together. Find a passion and let a student run with it. Challenge their thinking through meaningful questioning and have them challenge you.
#21stedchat
A2: Engagement means the students are the ones doing the talking, the creating, the choosing, the working. As the teachers our role is to coach them on their learning journey not a lecture. #21stedchat
A2: Engagement looks and feels like students facilitating their own learning and diving deeper into topics they’re genuinely interested in. For Ts, it’s all about providing an environment that promotes/encourages Ss to do that! #21stedchat
A1: There is a need for a shift from compliance to engagement in order for students to have more involvement in learning, and a boost in their motivation. #21stedchat
A2: Engagement looks and feels like students facilitating their own learning and diving deeper into topics they’re genuinely interested in. For Ts, it’s all about providing an environment that promotes/encourages Ss to do that! #21stedchat
A2: Ts, Ss collaboratively working, laughing, smiling as Ss pose and answer relevant questions. Then, all WANT to return tomorrow for more! #21stedchat
A2: Engagement means the students are the ones doing the talking, the creating, the choosing, the working. As the teachers our role is to coach them on their learning journey not a lecture. #21stedchat
A2: Engagement looks different in every classroom. But I think in general engagement includes student lead learning, where conversation, questions, and opinions are flowing in between the educator and their students. #21stedchat
I am stirring the pot a bit. But Trs could have an engaging lessons, but ss may not be compliant. We should be careful how we use terms is all I am saying. #21stEdChat
A1. "compliant" is a term that reminds me of the factory system... If you are looking for "well-behaved", then use the term "meets expectations" #21stedchat
@katrina_cade Yes! I agree so much with that! So many people forget the purpose of education and that it is to LEARN to become more educated; not learning for a job or to finish a project #21stedchat
So if a certain student is not engaged, isn't it the responsibility of the teacher to make adjustments to increase the level of engagement for them? #21stedchat
Agreed. The kid standing in the back highlighting his novel is more engaged than the student who writes random notes when the principal comes in for a Snapshot. ALL educators need to be trained on how to recognize engagement, from subs to supers. #21stedchat
A3 For me, the workshop model works best. I am with the students as they learn and have my finger on the pulse of learning. If the engagement dies, it is mine to make magic! #21stedchat
A3: I would say that one way to make sure the students are engaged would be to make them discuss topics in small groups and then have them present. That way everyone will have to participate. #21stedchat
This is exactly what I do when I teach preschool Spanish. I give them a game to play with simple rules and then let them decide how to go about their task involving Spanish words #21stedchat
The ss I teach may be different than most, if my lessons are not engaging then they just won't do it. So my responsibility to make lessons engaging falls on me. #21stEdChat
A3 Engagement means you have an entry point for every student. And if they are truly engaged they have some choice in ways they are showing their learning and even better choice in content as well #21stedchat
The tone in the classroom. How are students responding to what they are learning? Are they asking questions, taking notes, etc. Its on the teacher and how they conduct a classroom, and to what standard they hold their students to.
#21stedchat#w200
What I am finding most interesting is looking at how people are replying to questions and how different the mindsets from different levels (ES vs HS) are in this chat. #21stEdChat
The ss I teach may be different than most, if my lessons are not engaging then they just won't do it. So my responsibility to make lessons engaging falls on me. #21stEdChat
A1 Compliance is not a form of educating. It does not teach our students to think independently in the classroom. Engagement encourages our students to get involved in their education and learning #21stedchat
A3: Students need to have ownership of their learning and have the chance to make choices. Teachers need to have ownership of what they are doing in their classroom and have the freedom to make decisions of how and what they teach. #21stEdChat
A3: Could be subjective- but overall the environment of an engaged classroom will be much more productive & noticeably more successful than one that has fallen into compliancy #21stedchat
A3: by letting them choose, being transparent about why what they are doing is important, being excited and supportive of the process they choose in learning/teaching and CELEBRATING successes and growth #21stedchat
A2: Engagement looks like information being shared and applied that transcends the task assigned. Conversations, aha moments, intense focus, brainstorming, etc. Students demonstrate this when instruction captivates. #21stedchat
Ofcourse it is, which in my classroom if they are engaged they are being compliant. Because that is my goal to engage all ss in the learning process. #21stEdChat
In reply to
@katrina_cade, @ChristieNold, @JoriKrulder
A3: By providing a safe (classroom) space for our Ss to take risks, learn from failures, make choices, ask qs, & challenge status quo w/ their solutions. #21stEdChat
A3. Environment and Relationships - the environment you create and the relationships you build are the greatest tools you have to connecting with kids and promoting growth -- not you content and not the standards #21stEdChat
A3: I would say that having students learn in groups or being allowed to choose how they will learn the material will allow them to be engaged and having open lesson plans with a clear objective but freedom to choose how to reach it #21stedchat
A2: Risk taking. Students are comfortable taking risks, being wrong at times, challening others, and classmates are dialoguing to reach new awarenesses #21stedchat
Yes. I know it's not always simple (or almost never,) but if not us, who? This is the power we have in the classroom -
to create this engagement #21stedchat
A2 Engagement is focused around discussions and interaction with your peers and teachers. Teachers observe and guide the interactions among students #21stedchat
A3 (grabbing megaphone) stop grading on behaviors!! Stop deducting for or giving zeros for late work, no names, purple pen, coming late, etc. #21stedchat
A3. Environment and Relationships - the environment you create and the relationships you build are the greatest tools you have to connecting with kids and promoting growth -- not your content and not the standards #21stEdChat
A3: By giving students options and different activities to choose from when learning. You could also ask students if this activity was engaging for them or not. For teachers, maybe making sure they are excited, encouraging, and energetic when teaching the lesson. #21stedchat
A3 For students (and teachers) to fully engage, we can help them turn school into a place where they explore and enact their values. School doesn’t have to be only preparation for a meaningful life; it can also be part of a meaningful life.
#21stedchat
Yes, but shouldn't it be some at all levels. We want ss at all levels to be engaged and curious about learning. I find I have to break a lot of stereotypes about learning once ss get to HS. #21stEdChat
A3: I try to make sure that I am having students work on authentic projects not just a slideshow or a collage where they can just spit back knowledge. I want them to be able to apply that knowledge! #21stedchat
I agree! It is very important for the students to know that what they are learning is important and how it can be applied to their life. I also like how you mentioned celebrating success and growth! That is also super important. #21stedchat
A3: The best way to ensure someone isnt just complying is to allow them to take control of their education through PBLs, mastery based learning and multiple intelligence. Allowing someone to show mastery through their strengths and passion.
#21stedchat
A3: Giving students a voice or choice in what and how they learn is a surefire way to engage students. This is easier with some content areas than others, but can apply to all with some creative thinking. #21stedchat
A3: Using technology is a good way to engage students as well as teachers. Questions and open conversation between students and the teacher about what works and what doesn't is important as well. #21stedchat
I try to put myself in their seats. Whenever I come up with activities I always ask myself if I would want to participate or if I would be excited about it. If I answer no to either one I know I can't guarantee anybody being engaged #21stedchat
A3: I believe the best way to keep the students engaged, would be to have them be put into groups. Group projects allow them to learn a lot from one another. #21stedchat#GEN2108
A3: I honestly think you just have conversations with your Ss and other Ts - you can usually tell how engaged people are by how much they can contribute to conversations/discussions. Also - don’t let them get compliant...challenge and encourage! #21stedchat
A3 Creating their own thoughts from the lesson is a way to ensure student engagement. Observing student interactions with the lesson is essential as well #21stedchat
A3: It starts with the teacher feeling empowered by the administration.Once that happens , the potential for engagement in the classroom is limitless . The teacher will in return empower students to take risk, use their voice ,create and have a growth mindset #21stEdChat
A3: For students to move from compliant to engaged it’s important to stress growth and the process of learning, instead of good grades. I also believe the classroom environment plays a huge role in engagement styled learning, creating brave spaces for our students #21stedchat
I love using legos, but even then we have to give choice. Some kids don't feel like they are "good" at legos because they didn't play with them at earlier ages. True story. #21stedchat
Even Ss created norms require challenge & revisiting - especially when so many use "majority rules" - can still be silencing & perpetuate systems that do not work for all #21stedchat
In reply to
@SchleiderJustin, @BodePE, @katrina_cade, @JoriKrulder
Important to who? Us (so they can pass the test...which admin is always worried about) or them (for their lives if it may apply somewhere in their future)? My two core courses are required so they may pass the state standards & tests. #21stedchat
A3: For students to move from compliant to engaged it’s important to stress growth and the process of learning, instead of good grades. I also believe the classroom environment plays a huge role in engagement styled learning, creating brave spaces for our students #21stedchat
a3 It's exhausting to create engaging activities that align & connect every day. I'm thrilled to finally have found a good inquiry-based HS math series. #21stedchat
I also think we can flip compliance. We need to act a certain way not because its the rule, but because it helps foster learning in our classroom. It's not about compliance. It's about caring about ourselves and others as learners. #21stedchat
This assumes a position of equal investment & support - we are all stakeholders, but not all Ss or voices are honored in learning. Compliance has been regularly used to silence #21stedchat
In reply to
@BodePE, @SchleiderJustin, @katrina_cade, @JoriKrulder
A4: I think that questioning allows for the students to have to think on their feet, making them almost forced to engage themselves in the activity. #21stedchat
This may sound bad, but when I say important, I never mean tests. I mean Ss... in life, to get jobs, be good people, happy people. I don’t care about the tests. I do make sure Ss know that I recognize that THEY care about it. But I’m not adding that pressure to them #21stedchat
A3: For students to move from compliant to engaged it’s important to stress growth and the process of learning, instead of good grades. I also believe the classroom environment plays a huge role in engagement styled learning, creating brave spaces for our students #21stedchat
A4. Students are thinking when asking questions, but to improve the questions that they ask begins with a classroom that values questions and not just answers. #21stedchat
A4: I think that questioning allows for the students to have to think on their feet, making them almost forced to engage themselves in the activity. #21stedchat
I think that it is important to both us and them. Students need to know and understand why they are learning what they are, and how what us teachers are teaching them will prepare them for the real world. This also makes it relatable for the students. #21stedchat
A4: Questions are powerful for so many reasons. When students create the questions, they are more likely to think about the curriculum in terms of their own experience #21stedchat
A4: Good questions lead to curiosity and exploration on the part of students. Must also teach students to formulate their own meaningful questions. #21stEdChat
a4 It makes them think about what they are learning To put into better context from them to understand later They can build on these ideas for themselves. Having students think for themselves rather than spitting ideas, figures at them is where the learning is
#w200#21stedchat
A4 questioning leads students to understanding their creation process. We use the 3 question model. What did you do? What did you learn? What questions do you have? #21stedchat
A4: Questions needs to be strategic. We need to make sure we ask students why and how questions. Questions that take them being a one word answer. Questions that make them think & process. #21stedchat
In every class I take as a college student I always try to concentrate more on what I learn instead of the grade I see on a test, whether it's good or bad. In my future classroom I really want to emphasize the idea of what you said. #21stedchat
Q4: Questioning helps student engagement by having them defend their views or by showing them that there is still more to be learned and giving them a motive to continue #21stedchat
A4: Good questions lead to curiosity and exploration on the part of students. Must also teach students to formulate their own meaningful questions. #21stEdChat
A4: Teaching students how to ask good questions that will lead to more learning is key. We need to constantly question and teach them to not be satisfied with a simple answer. They can always dig deeper. #21stedchat
A4 The teacher should not be the one doing all the questioning. If students are interested and engaged, they should be the ones asking the questions. #21stedchat
A4: Questioning helps ascertain what students are and aren’t grasping. It gives a glimpse into their understanding, which can then be used to guide further instruction. #21stedchat
A4: Any questioning helps cognition, and then metacognition. Ss want to be smarter and learn more no matter what they may appear to feel in the classroom. Questioning helps Ts help Ss to approach content, both by asking and answering #21stedchat
A4: Questions needs to be strategic. We need to make sure we ask students why and how questions. Questions that take them being a one word answer. Questions that make them think & process. #21stedchat
As I am still a student and still have a while until I am officially a teacher, it's nice to hear ideas like this early so I'm prepared to choose the right school and administration when my time comes around. #21stedchat
Which is why I am trying to get us to think differently about the word compliance. It should not mean silence, IMO it should mean actively involved in the learning process. #21stEdChat
In reply to
@ChristieNold, @SchleiderJustin, @katrina_cade, @JoriKrulder
Hmmm their growth on standardized test make up 40% of my evaluation in MI. I don't disagree that we need to get them ready for life. Which I do. But if I get 60%'s on my evals I won't be around long. #21stedchat
A4: Questioning allows for creativity and thoughtfulness among the students. When the students are asked to come up with their own responses it shows their understanding as well. #21stedchat
A4: Every students have a different way of thinking and different idea. Questioning will encourage them to discuss, share and collaborate each other #21stedchat
A4: Questioning should also be on a personal level. Build relationships. Get to know their why. Their strengths. Their weaknesses. Asking questions about them as a person and not a data point. #21stedchat
A4: Questioning helps student engagement, because it gets them thinking more about the topic. I feel you should always asks questions! #21stedchat#GEN2108
A4: I believe its the correct questioning not just questioning. Its easy to through soft balls but is it expanded someone's thinking. We need to challenge our students. Its through the challenging questions that we see struggle but the biggest growth.
#21stedchat
A4 Questions mean the student is trying to understand the topic better or gain a deeper understanding of it. Either is great for their learning #21stedchat
A4: Questioning Ss more than likely will lead to a discussion and discussions are great! Allows Ss to think a different way, listen to their peers, and talk about what they know/have learned. #21stedchat
A4: I use qs to challenge my Ss. They know that I always pushback or ask more qs. They say it’s quite a challenge to satisfy my curiosity (w/ their answers). Makes them more reflective when sharing ideas. #21stedchat
I think classrooms need norms in order to provide kids with a space where all can learn. Some may call that compliance but I think of it more as classroom culture. We work together to create a learning environment that works for all. #21stedchat
Yes students should be actively involved in the learning process, but to me compliance means that they are only doing because the teacher wants them to. Whereas engagement means that they are involved because they truly want to. Intrinsically motivation. #21stedchat
In reply to
@BodePE, @ChristieNold, @SchleiderJustin, @JoriKrulder
A4: It allows students to deepen their thinking by having students ask and answer questions. You are also interacting with students by asking questions and having students answer them. Questions are a great discussion tool for the classroom. #21stedchat
I agree with you. It is so important to encourage questioning and remind students that there is no such thing as a stupid question. If they are asking questions, then they are curious and engaged. #21stedchat
A2: I think engagement is having tools like a smart board, kahoot, or google classroom etc. where it allows everyone to interact and understand the goals that need achieved to reach maximum potential #21stedchat
A4 ~ Questions that challenge Ss to think about the material at a higher level, questions that can not be answered by regurgitating the info presented, promote S engagement & learning! This must be fostered & scaffolded... #21stedchat
A4: I believe its the correct questioning not just questioning. Its easy to throw soft balls but is it expanded someone's thinking. We need to challenge our students. Its through the challenging questions that we see struggle but the biggest growth.
#21stedchat
A4: The questions we ask can either inspire students to think critically or they can just ask Ss to spit back knowledge. Choose wisely depending on the level of engagement you are aiming for. #21stedchat
A4: It teaches students that their voice has power. It only takes one question to spark others curiosity . It also keeps the teacher engaged and ready to take the lesson in another direction if needed #21stEdChat
A4: Teaching Ss how to ask deeper questions and not just accept what’s on the surface helps prepare them for their future. Checkout https://t.co/X4YrDN2FnB Love their resources. #21stedchat
Correct me, please, if I am wrong...but there are two types of questioning methods being talked about... Ts to Ss and Ss to Ts. To be clear, I am talking Ss to Ts. #21stedchat
Our growth counts, but I’m not sure of the percent (I sure hope it isn’t 40%). I feel like my role for Ss is to teach them content from our standards and to get them ready to be good, productive citizens. Their tenure in education alone has them worrying... #21stEdChat
I will say that I think there is a time and place for those kinds of questions, but if they are the only questions you are asking then your students are missing out on a real learning moment! #21stedchat
A4: By questioning students, you are testing that they understand the content. For some shyer students, if you can get them to answer a question, they will become more comfortable with being involved and increase their own engagement. #21stedchat
A4 Our questions can help students become curious, creative, and critical thinkers. Teaching them to ask questions can help them do all of that AND connect their learning to their own values.
#21stedchat
It happens in a lot of schools, which is the importance of this chat. Fortunately in #physed we don't "sit and get". Learning is almost always active, literally. #21stEdChat

A4: Questioning our students in thought provoking ways and allowing them to question/challenge us/the material presented encourages engagement with the material beyond “copying & pasting” it for an assignment or test. #21stedchat
Tremendously. I just hate contributing to that worry. This is probably also due to my background in special education. I’ve always felt like my kids had “bigger fish to fry” like improving their literacy or basic math skills #21stedchat

I think it depends on what you and what your co-worker is teaching. A history teacher isn't going to tell a math teacher how to teach content to students. However pointing them at articles or chats like this one might help them.
#21stedchat#W200
A5. you have to live a growth mindset with your Ss and in your classroom - it leads to questions about what you are doing and why Ss WANT to be in your room so much #21stedchat
Classroom culture is co-created, compliance suggests power-over. We will continue to miss each other if compliance is being touted as positive or worth reclaiming #21stedchat

A5: I can help other coworkers and teachers by showing them the benefits and pleasures of self-directed learning and how it helps students by allowing them to take charge of their own learning #21stedchat
A4 Different types of questioning can help gauge student engagement as well as understanding. Open ended questions are best served for this #21stedchat
A5: It is possible to shift some people's thinking, but not everyone. I think the shift begins with a simple conversation. No one wants to feel like their methods are being attacked. #21stedchat
A4 - Qs should ask students to think about and with the knowledge they have...recall information, how it relates to their life, how it applies to the current situation/question. #21stedchat
A5. Modeling and having authentic conversations. In a school it is important to have a school definition of what engagement looks like so everyone is striving for the same goal and doesn't have a different definition in mind. #21stEdChat
The most important thing we can do to help other educators (and ourselves) is connect with them. I am the teacher I am today because of colleagues like the ones on this chat sharing ideas #21stedchat
A5 model, have them observe a lesson. I had another teacher and his student teacher observe a game students loved and they started using it. Later, I went in and observed his class and a technique. #21stedchat
A5 ~ Continue to engage in conversations about the differences Btwn compliance & engagement by focusing on strategies and tools that foster engagement! #21stedchat
A5: As an instructional coach, I model it with my teachers. When a teacher asks if they can do something, I respond with "Can you?" or "What does your data say?" or "Is it best for your kids?" I want them to make their own decisions and own their own classroom. #21stedchat
A5: The temptation is to say it's out of my control, but then I'd be like a dis-engaged S. I share tidbits here and there, remain positive, and communicate with an intensity fitting for each colleague, specifically. #21stedchat
Most of my students are headed to skilled trades work. The standardized test don't prepare for them for that but our district and many others identity is pinned to the results. #sadly#21stedchat

A5. you have to live a growth mindset with your Ss and in your classroom - it leads to questions about what you are doing and why Ss WANT to be in your room so much #21stedchat
A5: Engagement vs Compliance starts on day 1. Whose classroom is it - yours, theirs, or ours? Do Ss get a say in some of the structure? Do you build relationships or establish roles? #21stedchat
A5 I think showing others what I'm doing whether if it's showing the student's work or having them come in and see what is going on in my classroom can show its effectiveness #21stedchat
A5: We need teachers to see that it is okay not to just do what admin tells you if it isn't right for your kids. We need to do what is best for the kids....always. #advocate#21stedchat
I've heard from my aunt that she gets the best answers out her students when she asks them how they got their answers, even if they aren't correct. This helps her build her relationship with each student and find solutions to problems other students may be having. #21stedchat
Exactly. I have found that the best questioning is through "what" and "why" questions. I find the hardest time distinguishing when it is good to step in and help #21stedchat
We need to share ideas and strategies and connect, connect, connect. Teaching is hard, but it's more engaging for us when we try out new things and other teachers is where we can find them #21stedchat
A5: That’s what I’m doing now actually. I’m trying to help Ts model expectations more in the classroom as far as procedures, communication, etc. They fear the loss of control & what it could do to their room. I’m trying to show that it won’t #21stedchat
A5: Side note: How many of your are engaged in staff meetings or PD? Is engagement modeled to you by your admins. You are you there to comply? #21stedchat
A5: I also encourage my teachers to try new things and I will "borrow" their classrooms/students to try new things. My hope is that teachers will follow my lead and promote ownership with their own students. #21stEdChat
A5: I can suggest lessons that worked in your classroom that made Ss really engaged. I can also make sure to talk about all of the positive outcomes that comes from engaging Ss. You want students to enjoy learning, and if they aren't engaged that could be hard to do #21stedchat
A5 Moving students, teachers, administrators, and parents away from a culture of compliance is hard, since that’s so much of what school has meant. We can start by helping them see that in addition to complying, they can ALSO make school about serving their values.
#21stedchat
A5: Late to the party here, but since this q is my whole job, I’ll weigh in: 1st, enable T engagement & shift away from staff cultures of compl. 2nd: Take ppl to sites where this is a thing and let them ask all the q’s. 3rd: Support rich instr design thru PL. #21stedchat
A5: We need admin that is open to hearing ideas and suggestions from their teachers. Most teachers know what their students need and it might be different in each grade and classroom. Every student needs something unique to them. #21stedchat
A5 I also enjoyed our small group PD where we shared ideas with each other. It was also nice because it was one of the few PD formats we did that was not compliant based. #21stedchat
this issue is at the forefront of what needs to change if we are going to move our education system in the right direction. https://t.co/CFtcESylyL.Absurd. #21stedchat

A4 Questions are very important for student engagement. Also, having effective communication between the students and the teacher ensures that feedback is given and received so that student engagement can be achieved. #21stedchat
A5:Of course modeling it your classroom . It also helps sharing all the great resources available from podcast , articles and great books to read. #21stEdChat#lifelonglearner
This is tough! I work on PD for my school and district now and it is super hard to balance the engagement piece with what you are required to present during sessions. #21stedchat
10 of us are piloting CPM. 10/10 are 100% sold. Next year, all of our district's Algebra 1 classes will be inquiry based bc retention is noticeably improved. #21stedchat
A5: Share. Share your ideas, your lessons, your strategies, your classroom, your vision. When people see examples of engagement in action, they won't be able to ignore it because it works! #21stedchat
We would be hard pressed to find much real world value in standardized tests. There simply is none... especially in a society where 65% of the jobs our Ss will one day have do not yet exist #21stedchat

A5: In order to help others shift their thinking from compliance to engagement, would be to try to have them understand HOW to engage. There has been too much compliance in schools, so it will be hard. There's always room for a challenge though! #21stedchat#GEN2108
A5 The best way to learn is through engagement and collaboration. Teachers can do this same thing amongst each other to change and educate our thinking #21stedchat
I agree. Many teachers are hesitant to change & wants evidence of how this will look like in the classroom. Walking the talk is very powerful. #21stEdChat
A:3 To keep students and educators engaged, change up the way you do things. It keeps everyone on their toes and keeps you excited about what is coming next. #21stedchat
We do some of this, but need to do more. Ts need to be able to ask Qs about what’s working & what’s not, but more importantly they need to be given time to create solutions together - not be given an answer. #21stedchat
A5: Have conversations, invite them to your classroom, and model how you engage your students. Be open to helping other Ts by and hopefully those Ts are open to accepting help/willing to take your ideas into consideration #21stedchat
How we look and and questions. How as a teacher and a student to ask hard and good questions. TO be willing to grow, change, and learn. And to think about how best to learn and teach.
#w200#21stedchat
A6: That teachers need to continue to focus more on how to engage their students, along with making sure that they are engaged as the teacher. This can be done through questioning, making lessons meaningful, doing hands on activities, etc. #21stedchat
Thanks for another great #21stedchat We won't be meeting next week due to the BIG GAME...didn't want to say Super Bowl..dang it. But on Feb 11 we will be discussing Differentiation & Accommodations. Join @Edu_Thompson & me Feb 11 at 8 PM ET US
Having conversations are so important. The best way to learn is through conversation and I think as teachers it is something we need to remember not only for our students, but ourselves as well #21stedchat
Traditionally, it is given by admin, and has no classroom value...
EdCamps are changing that, however. Best PD, along with @Twitter, you can find #21stedchat
There are lots of dedicated teachers here who are currently making a positive difference and lots of pre-service teachers who will make an excellent positive difference! #21stedchat
A4: questioning helps student engagement because it requires them to be focused and hone in on the skills that they have and help them understand material more clearly #21stedchat
A6 There as so many great ideas on #21stedchat about having more engaging classrooms, not just sitting and listening. Definitely a chat I will be coming back to in the future.
A6: I need to be constantly evaluating my questions this week to make sure I’m asking thoughtful, engaging, reflective questions! Great learning from you all! #21stedchat
A6: A take away from tonight would be that even though there are multiple different ways teachers use to get student's to be engaged, the end message is that it is incredibly important for students to be active rather than passive learners #21stedchat
Yes! It always helps having experience and learning from that. Teachers should promote engagement by talking about what worked and didn't work in their classrooms! This might help more teachers get on board with engagement. #21stedchat
A6: I need to be more active in looking for ways to engage my Ss in the classroom. I need to listen to my Ss more on what works for them (& what doesn’t). #21stEdChat

I recently learned about great online forums for sharing lessons and activities! The flow of ideas from teacher to teacher is really important in these times. #21stedchat
A6 My takeaway is that there are a lot of pre-service teachers who already care about and are committed to genuine engagement. What a wonderful thought for a mid-career teacher like me.
#21stedchat
Yup. Let's say goodbye to that in classrooms, and hello to positive culture where we act in ways that show we care about one another as learners. #21stedchat

A6: There was so much I learned tonight, not just from my own thinking, but reading everyone's excellent responses about engaging in classrooms. #21stedchat#GEN2108
A6: I learned there are many teacher and future teachers out there with different perspectives. I learned different ways to engage my future students and create a positive and engaging environment in my future classroom! #21stedchat
Great chatting with you all tonight in #21stedchat! If you'd like to spend some time reflecting on your engagement near the end of the week, I hope you'll consider joining me for the first ever #waledchat Thursday at 9pm! Celebrating our Ws & learning from our Ls together!
