. that is incredible. T I have read so mall me more. I have read articles about the benefits of STEM with Special Ed.
-
-
Hi Emily welcome to our chat!
-
What is a SPED master's sequence?
-
We got University of Oregon and Franciscan U representin' in where are my GCC peeps?
-
Hello! I am a senior Early Childhood Education major at . I am hoping to learn new ways to engage students!
-
. fantastic I am looking forward to your insights.
-
Special Education program has Early Literacy, Intermediate Literacy, and Math as a year long course sequence.
-
. have them join us please. The more the merrier.
-
hi! I would love to hear more about utilizing tech with little ones. currently in technology educators course right now
-
A1 I like to embed STEM challenges into the curriculum every few weeks. We also challenge classes across the nation.
-
As a future social studies teacher, incroporating STEM into lessons is a good way to focus on real issues in the world today
-
TY yes there are also groups doing incredible Math curriculum research.
-
absolutely what are some ways you can do so?
-
-
-
Hello everyone! I'm a senior Early Childhood Education major , and I'm excited to learn about STEM!
-
There are some great math videos and how it correlates to art on YouTube. Just look up Vihart. She makes great videos.
-
A1 cont'd all via TWitter and social media!
-
-
You could integrate games such as play-off's of tag and Clue with an educational twist.
-
A1 cont'd for instance my class of college Ss built a marshmallow tower with spag noodles and challenges 2nd graders to build too.
-
oh that is interesting tell me more about that.
-
A senior pre-service special ed teacher tweeting in live from Franciscan University ready to network and learn!
-
I'm studying early childhood education at Kent State University
-
-
-
Hey, ! Edcamp this Saturday!
-
-
. yes I love celebrating the hour of code with my college Ss. So they can bring it to their classes.
-
-
Hope to show scientists, etc. who lived virtuous joyful lives & learn from their material and their applicable witness
-
. very neat. Good thinking outside the bun!
-
-
. that is fantastic! Bring in the the experts via skype, twitter, google hangout!
-
I think integrating STEAM into my future curriculum is a great way for all types of learners, especially those that are hands on!
-
Using STEM is very important especially since I am a future Middle School math teacher
-
LOVE the Marshmallow Spaghetti noodle idea...I've seen similar activities in elementary MENSA tournaments
-
. you are so right. How can you incorporate it into your classroom?
-
. it was really cool bc it opened up my classroom from 4 walls to the world! Ss were posting pics and it was neat.
-
you are right. What are some specific ways you can incorporate it?
-
Counting pumpkin seeds in a kindergarten classroom is an excellent way to incorporate fall themes into mathematic instruction!
-
Many schools back home will go on a trip to an apple orchard to learn more about local agriculture!
-
For my preschool friends, going on a nature walk: comparing, classifying and sorting leaves and discovering WHY they are different
-
. Look at all these Ohio area edu studies majors checking in for !
-
. great tie in for fall, math, and science - what about engineering and tech?
-
You could make collages of fall leaves while studying why they turn colors in science class.
-
-
. I like that idea of using real world scenarios in STEM! Good thinking.
-
A1: I hope to incorporate many different areas in my future high school math classes to engage the interests of all my students
-
For art one can make an acorn out of a Hershey's Kiss, Vanilla Wafer, peanut butter, and a chocolate chip.
-
I just saw a project that students collect all kinds of different fall leaves & treat them so that only the veins remain.Beautiful
-
Hi What are elementary MENSA tournaments?
-
nice what about math, tech, and engineering? What else can we do with those leaves?
-
I've never heard of this before, what is it used for?
-
I like the idea of teaching kids about agriculture and letting them make connections as to how it affects them
-
that is great - waht can you specifically?
-
I would incorporate fall by going out and having the students see how nature changes when the seasons change
-
A2 - for columbus day you could do a boat building activity out of tin foil.
-
A2 For math, you can use desmos online to make fun graphs and then use those to make a creative fall picture
-
fantastic - how can we incorporate math, science, and tech in there too?
-
I'll give my students rigorous content and work with other teachers to help further their understanding!
-
I knew of a teacher that made catapults for engineering class, you could see who threw pumpkins the furthest
-
Fall worksheets from wordsearches to vocab lists are always fun and a great way to break up material or ease into a lesson
-
-
-
. pumpkin chunkin! Love it!
-
have the leaves shape a number to include math. Kids could also upload their pictures & make an online presentation.
-
Study engineering behind making a pumpkin spice latte (I'l like to learn that), then have kids make a simpler version.
-
I remember doing this when I was in middle school
-
. let's try to think outside the bun here - what can we do hands on with fall items
-
-
-
-
Taking a nature walk during the fall season would expose young children to the changing of colors and how the leaves fall.
-
Writers can create scenarios for homework problems, artists create pictures, etc and I'd give extra credit
-
Wow is rockin' tonight with fall STEM activities! Check us out!
-
Specifically for math, using bendy straws for simple graphs could be fun, until you get to complex polynomials :)
-
. love the way you are using multiple modes of assessment for Ss to show what they know.
-
-
Using different nature objects to paint, learning about textures in nature and why they're so different
-
. that sounds fun it gets Ss thinking critically and creatively - things that sometimes don't show up on a worksheet.
-
Students could go on a nature walk and bring a ruler, and measure the fall leaves and any other thing that they may find!
-
For theatre art, learn about spooky strobe lights & fog machine (science)--kids cut out simple shadow stage sets & perform
-
. maybe they can also document their findings by taking a pic and making a video collage?
-
I just want my students to walk away from my class with more than increased math skills-their passions matter
-
should be for all learners.
-
-
maybe you could add an art incentive and see who can make the 'coolest' or 'most artsy' catapult?
-
. thanks. Add some art and tech in there
-
-
. yeah maybe have different categories that Ss can enter their catapults!
-
-
. what do you find valuable about this resource?
-
I've found that activities that involve moving around and physically exploring a concept are the most successful in my classroom!
-
Looking at past historical figures and events and studying them in a way that helpsus better understand what is happening today
-
-
. yes even something as simple as a brain break or getting up and moving around with partners is beneficial.
-
A3 I find if I have clear instructions and all the materials ahead of time it leads to a successful STEM activity.
-
Your prof is so cool for letting you all participate in a twitter chat during class!
-
I think that finding real world and popular teen trends and relating that to math is very effective for students to learn
-
Using number games for math may be fun, especially with whiteboards!
-
. love this idea keeping it relevant for learners is key!
-
A3 I also find if we challenge K-12 classes across the nation it adds a global aspect to the challenge.
-
Lego block simple machines and robotic are SO COOL
-
My pre-calc teacher did amazing brain breaks that helped a lot
-
what kind of brain breaks were done at the HS level?
-
awesome project! It is definitely great to get the kids outside during the day-helps them focus inside later.
-
I have definitely seen that in classrooms, preparation is key!!!
-
Even carving pumpkins could be an engineering tie-in!
-
. you are so right! is amazing! You are blessed to have such great educators.
-
. oh I like this - tell me more.
-
Planning a Skype session with class of 3rd graders & the PreTs later this semester...
-
The other day during tutoring I took my tutee on a "letter walk" when he started getting really restless
-
. that sounds awesome! Great way to expand the walls of your classroom. It is so important to model that.
-
Students also love when they get to make/build something they can take home and call their own, more motivation!
-
-
I'm Adam and I'm a junior at Franciscan University studying early childhood & special education.
-
. absolutely! My colleague did a catapult challenge and Ss wanted to take their projects home.
-
A3 Kids love games that involve movement, especially when they can compete
-
Students could have to try to figure out the best way/best tools to use to carve a complicated pattern
-
. welcome Adam glad you are here.
-
-
-
Count up out loud + write alphabet in air at the same time; draw circle w/ 1 hand+square w/ other at same time
-
We walked through hallway looking at posters/signs trying to spot the letters we were working on
-
-
A4 find an activity for every unit/ch. etc. and schedule it in. Pinterest is a great resource for topic specific ideas!
-
All content areas are connected when applied to our lives! Making education relative to students allows for meaningful connection
-
Sticking with the theme most state standards for science could tie in with the Fall activities
-
. pinterest is a go to for teaching resources. Just be sure to check the validity and reliability of the source
-
Using word problems and more complex real life situations
-
Teachers cannot be so focused on STEM that they forget literacy! Reading and math can work together in one lesson!
-
. what about having the Ss create the problems based on real world events?
-
A4 Someetimes it's as simple as spending time in class discussing all the different ways it applies (for HS)
-
definitely, often times I'll just get ideas there and tweak them to fit what I'm working on
-
. you are absolutely right. Literacy is critical. I think it is an automatic tie in for
-
Learning about different customs, festivals, celebrations around the country & world.
-
is a teacher's best friend!
-
A4 I have observed teachers linking STEM activities to literacy and themes in books or the arts!
-
project-based learning is a great way to integrate stem across all curriculum!
-
Involve tv shows/books the kids are interested in--counting, art, literature, engineering how to make a film-so much opportunity!
-
. yes!! PBL is a great way to integrated in the classroom. Can you provide an example?
-
I like this, class discussion is a great learning tool
-
State standards do not have to contradict fun learning, a clever educational themed activity should work
-
. yes make it relevant to their learning. That means we as Ts must keep up with the latest media!
-
Along with that, using UDL methods can help promote differentiation and allow for student creativity
-
In high school we skyped with a class in a different country--great point about customs, Prof. Bortz!
-
So much change in the Autumn! Metamorphosis in nature and in ourselves...and across the curriculum of course
-
. nice UDL shout out here! We educators love DI!
-
-
-
In my HS english class, we created a film of scenes from a play we were reading. All the results were so creative. So much fun!
-
In class freshman year, we skyped in with a NASA engineer and he gave us a presentation on robotics
-
for a middle school social studies class have a discussion of how those subjects were involved in the time period you are studying
-
how necessary is that with early childhood?
-
-
-
I really want some warm spiced apple cider right now!
-
-
Hello! I'm Lauren, and I am a future teacher. I'm a little late to the chat, but it looks like there a lot of great ideas here.
-
Can someone please explain UDL?
-
I think as early childhood teachers it means a lot to kids if we know their references and favorite characters
-
yeah check us out by searching and you can find all of our great ideas. Sharing is caring.
-
to involve many subjects into one class. Many subjects are related to one another and can be applied at the same time!
-
I really liked the idea of letter walks, and there were so many other great new ideas #
-
maybe you can join us in 2 weeks for another
-
These chats move fast--I can feel the wind in my veil:). Great fun and great ideas, though! Thanks for all the insights!
-
A5 Chats are a great way to get ideas from all teachers! We all have something to share and should learn from one another
-
I never knew chats like this existed b4 this, definitely participating again. Some great ideas shared!
-
There are so many great ideas, people opportunities for educators. No more isolation in a closed off classroom. PLNs are the best!
-
STEM instruction should always be creative and relevant to students! Through our resources, we can create a new way of learning!
-
Universal Design for Learning is the pedagogy of tailoring instruction to the different needs of each student
-
I liked the engineering aspect...Gets the wheels turning.
-
"Start praying for your future students now, it is never to early." wise words from my professor Dr. Poyo today in class!
-
A5 STEM can be included in many ways. it is very important for students to get experience in all of these areas!
-
that subjects do not have to remain divided!
-
excellent point. Good take away!
-
This chat allows teachers to collaborate with one another and to get great ideas for there classrooms!
-
-
. yes I love how it opens up the world as a resource.
-
I saw many great ideas involving S.T.E.M and I can't wait to use them in my classroom. Thanks for having us !
-
Take away point: STEM can be incorporated into every lesson and in every day activities!
-
A5 I have gained more STEM ideas to integrate into the classroom. Shout out to punkin chunkin!
-
thank you for joining us!

HS English t's, check out to have your minds blown.
-
St. John Paul 2 agrees with that! He'd often be found in a chapel praying in between his sessions with students.
-
This live chat was super helpful and comforting to know that were all working towards the same goal.
-
Thank-you so much for this chat. It was a great experience! Hope to join another soon.
