#bcedchat Fred from Richmond BC, math mentor teacher, TTOC & consultant. Looking forward to reflecting on reflective cultures (like #bcedchat ). Good thing the Grey Cup is over so I can concentrate.
Good evening #bcedchat! Carrie - K to 9 TechUp learning specialist at @ScienceWorldTR! Looking forward to this chat, but will be in and out as I unpack from last week / get ready for this one!
A1: To me, it mean being able to look back on your practice, talk about challenges & success w/ others who support, help, question, challenge and encourage you. #bcedchat
A1 for me it’s when we are willing to share our concerns (and even ask for help) because we know the smartest person open the community IS the community #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: Anything enculturated must occur often & be an integral part of the learning environment. In a math class, this could look like students asking extension Qs, why Qs, what ifs & more. Self assessment could be key as well.

And without judgements. “I’ve been there...” can help. “How’s ____ working” for insights. “What can we do” is important for collaborative practice - doing with, not doing to... #bcedchat
ahhh yes... the community in a reflective culture. Good point Ian. We are better together than apart. Reflection is a part of the learning process... particularly the experiential learning cycle. That's what we're doing as practitioners. #bcedchat
A1. A safe community to reflect collaboratively to continuously enhance our learning environment. Creating a culture of reflection. Looking at strategies, methods of instruction, etc. #bcedchat
A1: initial thoughts...
-Looking where you've been, knowing where you are, and going to where you need to be
-All about glowing, growing and going
-Akin to Assessment: where are you, where are you going, how will you get there
-Fail Better
#bcedchat
A1 Reflective practice means working with the kids to reflect on how far they have come to shift their focus from how far they have to go. This is usually for social/emotional skills. #bcedchat

A1: to have a reflective community means that learning is a process all learners can grow in. Every one of my rehearsals is a reflective process #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1: I'm noticing both teacher community focused cultures of reflection and classroom cultures being discussed. This is why it is great being together like this. Reflecting on this, we fragment ProD & students learning. We are all students.
A2. @bcecta was created to engage and support new teachers. New curriculum has extended that work beyond supporting just "new Ts". Our executive is reflective in continuing to find ways to do that the work with @bctf as well. #bcedchat
We need to encourage inquiry, hard questions, What are we learning, why are we learning it, what is your next step for you, what questions do you have #bcedchat
Hi Sandy. The internet is a bit slow. It's funny how we are used to the fast flowing communication via TWITTER. i hope you can stay. Should be a good #bcedchat
A1: reflective culture to me means building reflective practice as a cultural norm. Not something we do in addition to the work, but as an integrated part of it. It means reflection is meaningful - a good indicator of success is no one groans when they hear ‘relfect.’ #bcedchat

A2 I appreciate that my “days of learning blog” at https://t.co/8OMeVTEFOi connects me with my current, past and asynchronous communities that allow a wide variety of thinking’s and sharing reach me #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1 making sure the “What could we do differently?” is part of self reflecting practice. We always answer what went well what didn’t go well and what could I do differently but the we question is important for class to see their role.
A2. Our #sd43 mentorship program is another community I appreciate. Trained mentors working collaboratively with new teachers, engaged in reflective practice. Such an important habit to start early in your career and throughout. #bcedchat

A2 : This one! I also work w/ Inquiry groups, each time I hear their reflections or chat w/ them, it makes me think about my own practices. As someone who offers lots of proD, I get to have lots of chats w/ Ts that make me rethink what I do & how I do it! #bcedchat

Great question @MsVictoriaOlson
A2:
Informal: I am from a family of educators incl. @GabrielPillay1
Formal: #cisva & #bced PLN
Why: Always asking "why" and not just "what" and "how" wrt learning and teaching
#bcedchat
In reply to
@MsVictoriaOlson, @MsVictoriaOlson, @GabrielPillay1
A2, involve in curriculum implementation, coding community with VIRL, Spiral of Inquiry, Learning network on Vancouver Island... no time left for me #bcedchat
A2: I try to blog about issues that are really bothering me, questions I have, things I have tried. I don't do it for others, I do it so I can process what is going on. But when I get feedback or comments, it definitely helps! #bcedchat
A2 I also like when I hear “here’s what we’ve always done....but does anything need to be adjusted this years?” (And whatever changes are made indeed become what’s always been done because reflective change sometimes is important) #bcedchat
Hellloooo #bcedchat!!! Mom duties complete and I'm REALLY here now, not just my programmed question tweets :) Thanks to all who have joined us tonight <3
A2: Have to say that my twitter community is where the most thought provoking questions and conversations come from. It is awesome to be part of a larger community that is trying new things and honestly reflecting. #bcedchat
Q2: aside from twitter, daily check-ins with my teaching partner, weekly check-ins with others in my program and a 3+ year FB chat with district band directors #bcedchat
#bcedchat Carrie's response made me reflect on how Lesson Study, & 3 action research projects have made me reflective in my working with students. How can I make inquiries more inclusive & personalized while encouraging lots of communication & reasoning.

A2: working with the district curriculum team teachers and coaches provides me with rich dialogue and learning; promotes self-reflection. In addition, participation in inquiry for the district; pro-d for district teachers; coaching and collab. help me grow #bcedchat
A3 a reflective culture helps you to take the time needed to look at an idea rather than try it and moving on to the next one... Give you a chance to connect with others and evaluate an idea #bcedchat
A3. Without it I think we'd just keep doing what we're doing and that doesn't benefit anyone. I am always adapting and (hopefully) improving. It's so vital to reflect but not just in isolation. Collaboratively! I love feedback to reflect on too. #bcedchat
A2 I am part of many so I can get a variety of perspectives: here, alted community, Principal's association, and the school itself. All give great and varied perspectives. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A1--means thinking about what we are doing and the why--focusing on the process--how we got there and how we can do better--always moving forward
#bcedchat A1 making sure the “What could we do differently?” is part of self reflecting practice. We always answer what went well what didn’t go well and what could I do differently but the we question is important for class to see their role.
A2. Speaking and presenting also helps me reflect every time I prepare my material. I am presenting in the Okanagan in February, and creating the PPT is great reflection on what has gone well, and not so much. #bcedchat

A3 descriptive feedback matters - especially in reflecting on what you did then and what you will do next time.....hmmmm sounds like most of the conversations I end up having in my office.... #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: "An unexamined life is not worth living."
"We learn best by looking at ourselves doing!"
We constantly are looking 'under' & 'beyond' with back reflections, reflecting in the now &
pro-flecting into the future.
When you hear/see others reflect you get to see their process. So often we only see results. I learn a lot from someone’s reflection on the steps and slips leading up to their destination. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2 just finished my masters and am still connected to cohort members. Also part of collaborative inquiry groups within VSB. Also signed up to be a mentor for new teachers in the district.
Q3: Reflective communities build professional learning in a positive, learner-oriented manner. Sometimes I only find an area I need to work on, by reflecting on what happened that morning #bcedchat
This is very true. When you have to share with others, it's automatically an invitation to identify areas of strength, weakness, and how to improve. #bcedchat
Yes the feedback piece is great... I crave it because as reflective as you try to be... intention and perception do not always match. Love getting feedback from another lens to consider. #bcedchat
A3: Reflection is learner-oriented. So many times I've found an area to improve in my own teaching by reflecting on what happened that morning. #bcedchat
A3 Reflection is important in all aspects of life. Seeing where you came from and learning from both the good and the bad to become better is important in and outside of learning. It is a good skill to teach and model for the students as well. #bcedchat
Q4: What activities/exercises do you have in your learning community to ensure that all members are a part of the reflective culture in your space? #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: Dr.Szetela taught me to reflect about the 'defining moments' in our lives, those cruxes where things changed. Those 'Stop' moments where we paused. Interesting how many of these emerged while writing poems about learning. Reflection crystallizes what is important!
A3. Without it I think we'd just keep doing what we're doing and that doesn't benefit anyone. I am always adapting and (hopefully) improving. It's so vital to reflect but not just in isolation. Collaboratively! I love feedback to reflect on too. #bcedchat
A3: Because it encourages you and enables you to persevere to teach in a way you strongly believe in and see fruit from. Without being part of a learning community self doubt can creep in. #bcedchat
Friendly reminder… #bcedchat is on this Thursday, November 29th at 7pm PST for 30-minutes to continue THIS conversation on Building Reflective Cultures.
If it doesn't involve ALL members, what are some activities that promote reflection for your community? Think: something in your classroom, something your staff has reflected on together collaboratively, etc. #bcedchat
A3. Reflection - ours as T's and S's - helps us figure out our path. As T's it helps make the learning more student centered, rather than formulaic. #bcedchat
Yes. Descriptive Feedback. Formative Assessment. AFL. Needs to be embedded in student learning and teacher learning. How about learning in general. Makes sense. #bcedchat
A3 descriptive feedback matters - especially in reflecting on what you did then and what you will do next time.....hmmmm sounds like most of the conversations I end up having in my office.... #bcedchat
I agree. How can we find space for reflective practices? Does this come in collaboration time? Prep time? Love to promote my staff (all staff, including EAs, teachers, and suppport staff) time for reflection. #bcedchat
Yes. I think our weekly meetings to share out is a start but we get so bogged down the reflection happens less. Personally I used to blog. Now I just journal.... #bcedchat
A3: I think without it we are just automatons, plugging away accepting that there is a single ‘right way.’ Reflection lets us ‘pause’ and ask why, to challenges systems (internal or external), to disrupt patterns of doing/being, to consider alternatives #rambling#bcedchat
Q4: What activities/exercises do you have in your learning community to ensure that all members are a part of the reflective culture in your space? #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: reflective culture as part of my practice makes us pause and think and focus on our rationale--easy to just do--much harder to think about the whys--makes us better when we understand ourselves
Yes. I LOVE reflecting on what did and didn’t work with my students. Getting feedback from students about my class and our school. It’s a shame we don’t formally hear more often from students outside surveys and accreditation cycles #bcedchat
A3 Reflection is important in all aspects of life. Seeing where you came from and learning from both the good and the bad to become better is important in and outside of learning. It is a good skill to teach and model for the students as well. #bcedchat
Weird that “we” weren’t like this even though ever since Socrates each generation notes that “kids today have luxury and be tyrants”.....even though it “wasn’t us....” 😎 #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4: so many.
Having student teachers allows me to sit with a table of students and just observe their learning processes, where do they get stuck, breakthrough, help one another process, etc.
Like video taping my golf swings, I can slow down & observe
A3: Because we don't know what we don't know. By reflecting, asking questions, being challenged, it pushes us to that space where we are continuously learning and improving our practice. #bcedchat
Well, and, it's what working with other human beings entails. Nothing about people is one size fits all, no matter how big or small they are. #bcedchat
positive culture where questions are welcomed and encouraged among staff; staff inquiry based on operational mandate of learning services department #bcedchat
A4: I like to use the book called #ReflectivePractice by Gillie Bolton. There are exercises at the end of each chapter called #6minutewrites. I try to build it into each class (once per week) to ensure we are reflecting at least once per week. #bcedchat
#bcedchat It is often teachers passing blame on students who don't work hard enough, focus enough instead of asking "did I structure the learning environment as well as I could?" Why did they struggle, what am I missing or assuming incorrectly?
Weird that “we” weren’t like this even though ever since Socrates each generation notes that “kids today have luxury and be tyrants”.....even though it “wasn’t us....” 😎 #bcedchat
Love that idea. A shared understanding of a reflective culture. I'd suspect leadership, clear communication, and an inclusive community are a part of this. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4 I like that description. Taking the time to slow down and observe. I too have a teacher candidate and have been able to sit more with groups. I’ve also taken the time to have individual meetings with students more often.
A5 Reflecting on my own practice with the students and being part of their group discussions. We have scheduled time as a group for a variety of mental health and growth topics and reflection is a big part of that. #bcedchat
A3: Because we don't know what we don't know. By reflecting, asking questions, being challenged, it pushes us to that space where we are continuously learning and improving our practice. #bcedchat
I used to find it really difficult to make time to reflect. Now - sometimes to make sure I continue to reflect even when I don't have the time I will start a sentence or even just a word that will help me remember and come back to it when I have more time. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4 or 5? --just starting providing collab time for staff to meet and work together during instructional time to learn from within the building and share experience
A4: We use Class Meetings in my classroom as a space to reflect on what social/spatial problems exist and what types of things we can do to remedy them. #bcedchat
It’s why schools shouldn’t be as they were years/decades/century+ ago: we’ve learned so much more about the brain and learning and challenges and and and .... we have reached a tipping point actually can be personalized instead of grouped based on age of birth #bcedchat
A4: I like to use the book called #ReflectivePractice by Gillie Bolton. There are exercises at the end of each chapter called #6minutewrites. I try to build it into each class (once per week) to ensure we are reflecting at least once per week. #bcedchat
A4: I think it starts with an invitation for the Ss to have voice in the space; to feel valued and connected. No one will lay themselves bare with honest reflection if they don’t feel safe. So connection and trust are essential if we want to ensure active participation
#bcedchat
Q6: How might you respond to those in your learning community who struggle with reflection? (i.e. Those who place blame, do not take responsibility, etc) #bcedchat
#bcedchat Lesson Study is the incremental proD that transformed Japanese education. Eg. Math teachers/educators & mathematicians choose a topic students find tough. Collaboratively (& reflectively) plan a lesson. 1 T implements with other team members observing, then they...pt1
#bcedchat pt 2... they debrief, redesign & reimplement. Results are published helping the whole community grow from the process of this incremental growth.
And in saying not grouping by year of birth, I’m not supporting retention (#1 predictor of high school incompletion) but looking differently on how we set up our classes....multi-age makeups can be very special.... #bcedchat
A6 you need to empower them, they need to join them in a learning journey. One step at a time, share books, reading, pro-d, meet people, do not leave them behind #bcedchat
A3) We are all learners. Dewey, as usual, got it right. “We don’t learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experiences.” You can’t get better without reflection. #bcedchat
This is a good "other side" to this conversation that often gets left out. When do we take it easy on ourselves vs. when do we push ourselves? Performance drive has a sweet spot. #bcedchat
A4: I like to use the book called #ReflectivePractice by Gillie Bolton. There are exercises at the end of each chapter called #6minutewrites. I try to build it into each class (once per week) to ensure we are reflecting at least once per week. #bcedchat
Yes. And I love how students can "own their learning" by self-assessing their #corecompetencies and this can relate to their learning via SEL or academically. #bcedchat
Q6: How might you respond to those in your learning community who struggle with reflection? (i.e. Those who place blame, do not take responsibility, etc) #bcedchat
A5: modelling it myself and building it into our routines. We check-in daily at morning circle - an opportunity to reflect on where we are, and what we might need moving forward short term. we begin and end the day with a community reflection. #bcedchat
Yes! So many professions are based on research, why should education be any different? When parents say"when I was in school..", I remind them that they wouldn't go see a doctor who is still using techniques from the last century. (Research based) Change is good! #bcedchat

I did it with PIMS out at UBC for years. What a reflective culture with all grade levels giving insights. We also started out with a 'problem' to play with before planning; what a powerful learning experience that always was as well as the lesson studies themselves.
#bcedchat
Yes. Lesson Study is an interesting approach to professional learning, shared understandings, and reflection. I wonder if any districts are implementing this framework in BC. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5: learning circles, appreciation circles, What Do You Notice, What do you wonder? Peer reviews of solution processes, gallery walks; fish bowls; . . . and I'm 7 minutes behind in the feed!
YES... I love @BreneBrown and just bought her new book on leadership. Vulnerability is key in education, leadership, and learning. Reflection is a part of this way of being. #bcedchat
A4) Outside of our department-level PLC time, we have nothing formalized. One nicety is if we tell admin we have something we want to pursue, the support it. Right now they are scheduling meeting times for leadership and all faculty to explore standards based grading. #bcedchat
A6: We are all on different path in our journey. Take time to notice where we are in relation to where we want to be, not in relation to others. Set your own goals, but be gentle with yourself if you are not yet meeting them. Ask if they want help being accountable. #bcedchat
Not to mention it forces kids to focus on the positive. We're all so quick to pick up on what DIDN'T work that we forget to look for strengths. #bcedchat
A6: The easy answer is to just listen, show empathy and understanding. Create a judgement free space. Look at the positive and the small steps of reflection taken. #bcedchat

gah! trying to do too many things at once - going to bow out early after missing a bunch, but will catch up with the hashtag tomorrow. Thank you @ch
and @MsVictoriaOlson! Have a great week #bcedchat!
...
Even when “two stars” seems daunting.... that’s when it’s most valuable.... too many are all to aware of the “everything” they need to do better on... #bcedchat
Question 8 is a CHALLENGE QUESTION for Thursday’s 30-minute mini #bcedchat on November 29th at 7pm. Take a moment to think about this question. You can respond now or at Thursday’s mini chat.
It's so effective for all ages to see how to be more specific and how to thoughtfully approach feedback. Not to mention the facilitator taking them through multiple renditions of Austin's butterflies... shows that multiple trials may be necessary to make improvements! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: My wife & I role-played a skit at a PAC meeting. I had to put a letter grade on her cooking. C+ didn't do anything for her, she asked for more specific feedback, went back & forth until I said, "it just wasn't as good as my mother's". Parents weren't so keen for LGs
Wise words. Thank you Carrie. So true. Let's not "over reflect" or be "too self-critical." That's why it's so important to have "critical friends" in your learning community who can be the MIRROR to your professional learning and growth. #bcedchat
A6: We are all on different path in our journey. Take time to notice where we are in relation to where we want to be, not in relation to others. Set your own goals, but be gentle with yourself if you are not yet meeting them. Ask if they want help being accountable. #bcedchat
Q8: [THURSDAY CHALLENGE] How would you encourage peer-to-peer reflection from a leadership standpoint? And, how will you know if you’ve been successful? TRY IT THIS WEEK and let us know how it goes. #bcedchat
Spot on ... here's to improving practice - in, with and across our communities. Schools are not alone, nor are parents/caregivers. Thanks #bcedchat for tonight's session - and to you @CarrieAntoniazz for the post!
A3: Because we don't know what we don't know. By reflecting, asking questions, being challenged, it pushes us to that space where we are continuously learning and improving our practice. #bcedchat
#bcedchat lol eek was flipping back and forth on two devices when first one then the other showed low battery. Lost the last couple of questions looking for charger.

Don’t forget the THURSDAY CHALLENGE and Q8. How would you encourage peer-to-peer reflection. DO IT and let us know what happened. Thursday, November 29th at 7pm PST for our 30-minute mid-week #bcedchat.
A7: We made a question board in my room a few years ago. The goal was to "guide the learning forward with Qs". So when Ss engaged in peer review, or feedback, they would ask questions to guide the person to see the room for growth instead of telling them. #bcedchat#magical
Please join #bcedchat next week on Sunday, December 3rd at 7pm PST for our topic “Inclusion and the Renewed Curriculum” with guest-mod @tweetsomemoore and co-mod @craigmah.
#bcedchat A7: Great point. "How would we do it with students?", now reflect on how this would be similarly done with adults (reluctant learners?) et al.
