Hi Everyone! I'm Barbara, an educational consultant who likes to push the edges. I live in Oakland, CA and enjoy learning from you in the #rethink_learning chat - Let's get rolling!!
A1: To teach cultural responsiveness and to know your place in the world. I learn so much when I connect to others outside of my country and even more if I can develop a global project #rethink_learning
A1 Because this is our world now. Our students need to know how to best navigate connecting with others from around the world. The more they do it, the better they will be at it. #rethink_learning
A1: important to examine issues related to #socialjustice and #equity - also develop habits of mind - e.g., open mindedness, fair mindedness, empathy, etc... #rethink_learning
Kristen from PA. I teach 6th grade science. My nanny quit last week and the one we hired didn’t show up and I’m not ready for the end of the year!!! #rethink_learning
Q1.Why is it imperative for educators to connect themselves and classrooms to the world? #rethink_learning - why do you believe #globaled is important for your students?
A1: teaching through culturally responsive pedagogy, examining our identities, biases and assumptions - so critical in today's world. #rethink_learning
A1 We need to be connected so our Ss can, more opps avail that we can bring into our CR and broaden all of our perspectives and knowledge, more authentic and relevant learning #rethink_learning#GlobalEd
Kristen from PA. I teach 6th grade science. My nanny quit last week and the one we hired didn’t show up and I’m not ready for the end of the year!!! #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#globaled A1 To allow students to learn culture and other perspectives. Our sociology class discussed gender inequality with a class in Argentina. Interesting to learn that both of our countries have very similar problems (wage, treatment etc.)
A1: teaching through culturally responsive pedagogy, examining our identities, biases and assumptions - so critical in today's world. #rethink_learning
A1: the world is so much smaller now thanks to tech; let's allow Ss to learn from each other, examine different perspectives, and challenge stereotypes. #rethink_learning
Q1 Because in a world full of divisiveness, creating connections beyond our own classroom and community is the best way to move our students into a future of unity, empathy, and understanding. #rethink_learning
A1: As an English teacher, I always want learners to see life from as many perspectives as they can to discover new things about the world around them, maybe even something new about themselves. #rethink_learning
A1: it is imperative in today’s day and age that we expand our world to embrace various cultures, traditions, languages, diversity, perspectives that aren’t like ours. We can’t just learn staying in our “bubble.” #rethink_learning#LoveLiteracyLearning
A1 Seeking ways to connect my Ss has brought such diverse learning opportunities and new experiences into our classroom, I have learned a lot #rethink_learning#globaled
A1 it's important for Ss to connect with others around the world to see there's more than just the trees in their own backyard! It's important for them to connect culturally to understand their place in the world to recognize differences and to help make changes #rethink_learning
A1: With the ubiquitous nature of tech, increasing access to communication & additional movements of people - our world is increasingly global. The need to improve communication, make meaningful connections & build relationships is greater than ever #rethink_learning
A1: you get diff perspectives. Everyone has a diff opinion and every school has a diff culture. if you always go to the same well, it will eventually run dry. Ss see that there’s a whole diff world of people than themselves with diff experiences and ideas. #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#globaled A1 Our current events class debated/discussed current issues with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽. The Ss from Mexico were interested in our thoughts over the new US leadership. Our Ss learned to agree to disagree. Neat to learn different views.
A2: They give us a powerful "why" for global collaboration. We can only solve global issues with a strong and organized worldwide community. #rethink_learning
A2: the big ideas or universal themes from which learning can happen..how so these goals encompass building a better future and sustaining relationships? #rethink_learning
A2: teaches ss that there is a world out there full of people with all sorts of needs that differ from our own. Ss realize that they can help with these needs. Gives them a purpose!#passionproject#rethink_learning
A1: it’s more important than ever for us to leverage the diversity in our classrooms and school communities to develop cross national relationships, forge friendships and build consensus with others #rethink_learning
A2: have to ensure the learning and questioning is happening in the classroom - how can these goals/big ideas support the curriculum and drive essential questions in the classroom? How can they lead to #inquiry? #rethink_learning
A2 They help us to understand what the problems are that are facing others in the world, see what is being done and how we can help, help us to connect #globaled#sdgs#teachsdgs#rethink_learning
A2 we are learning more about the #SDGs#teachSDGs through our #pbl we are doing in our Spanish 3,4,5 class, students are really teaching me a lot as well #rethink_learning
The #GlobalGoals are great entry points to help students see that global issues are local issues and vice versa. When they make a difference in their own community it ripples to make a difference in the world #TEachSDGs#GlobalEd#rethink_learning
A2: I created essential questions around these goals, which I include in my book to help Ts get the conversation and learning started. #rethink_learning
A1: I definitely think teaching #globaled to our students. We live in a global world and the one they live in will be even more connected. Better understanding of one another makes a better world. #rethink_learning
A2: These goals provide a lovely promise of what can be, of what is possible. These are aspirational - but not nearly as critical as they could be. #rethink_learning
To be most effective, we need to stay relevant to our kids - their learning styles, diverse needs, cultural backgrounds, social interests. Staying connected is the easiest way to help ensure that happens. #rethink_learning
For me a big part of this is helping students connect their work to an authentic audience. Even after the school year, that community will still exist. #rethink_learning
A2: these goals help Ss focus on the items that can bring us all together, the topics that are most important no matter who you are or where you come from. #rethink_learning#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2: The sustainability goals raise awareness of all cultures and nations because we all struggle with some of the same issues. Teaching Ss to work together to solve these issues is better for all #rethink_learning
A3: think of backwards design...what do you want Ss to get from the learning? Projects and ideas should come from them and you support them with the resources they need. #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#globaled A3 We have taken our Ss to Russia Canada, France, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, Spain, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil this year. Been a great opportunity for our Ss to learn 1st hand not only were the country is but to learn culture directly from their peers
A2 Ss are now connected through technology and are "neighbors" with everyone in the world This leads to #globaled collaboration, empathy and sesitivity to diverse global needs #rethink_learning
definitely..get them using tools which reach around the globe...having a closed environment that doesn't go beyond the school is not very effective or authentic. #rethink_learning
#SDGs can catapult our kids into deeper thinking about the "bigger picture." SDGs can be used as the foundation for collaborative research between students from various parts of the country/world. #rethink_learning
@BevLadd and her class at @beverly_ladd are great at doing all sorts of projects that connect students with others from around the country and the world. #rethink_learning
A3: Global Collaborations brings the Magic!! It's scary to go out of your comfort zone. Take small steps to find that magic. Fear tends to hold you back. First, know your fears so you can move forward. Go Global! https://t.co/g499Ko4tPM#rethink_learning
#rethink_learning#globaled A3 One of the best cultural interactions we had this year. Our 2nd/3rd Graders shared the Pledge with our friends from Israel 🇮🇱, they sang their national anthem!
A3: @pernilleripp's Global Read Aloud! Also, last year in my class, learners created vignettes about their daily lives and turned those into narrated videos to share with others from different environments and backgrounds. https://t.co/jg6qRZQawj#rethink_learning
This is something I'm extremely interested in learning more about... looking forward to reading others' experiences. I keep getting hung up on scheduling/logistics. Thinking too broad, perhaps? #rethink_learning
A3: oldest attends Global Studies World Language Academy (GSWLA) & youngest is in International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP). They’ve had opportunities to travel, volunteer for local community & abroad, expand their world. #rethink_learning#LoveLiteracyLearning
Thanks Everyone! What a great chat about #globaled! I learned so much from you in such a short time. Join @raspberryberet3 & me in 2 weeks to discuss #socialjustice
Thank you everyone who joined @raspberryberet3 and me today in #rethink_learning to discuss #globaled - next chat is 5/21 same time 30 minutes, 3 questions. Way to go!!
This is a great idea. I recently chatted w/a teacher in a rural area whose students have never seen the ocean, AR/VR is a great way to visit and experience places you cannot physically travel to. #rethink_learning
