A2. I think a challenge is that ELLs often lack background knowledge in SS content, especially when related to USA history. Another challenge can be the complexity of academic texts used to teach the content with minimal visuals. #ELLCHAT
A3. Use graphic organizers to make content/language comprehensible, preteach vocabulary, show video clips to build background & activate prior knowledge, the more visuals the better. #ELLCHAT
A3 I have been using articles from @Newsela They are great bc I can assign the same topic at the appropriate reading level of the students. Have made a huge difference. #ELLCHAT

As previously mentioned @Newsela. Also @SkypeClassroom for Virtual Field trips and experts. Have also been using other tools for review and practice. I’m a big fan of @quizlet and @GetKahoot. #ELLCHAT
A4 https://t.co/PacLA8K80f; https://t.co/qsYYaV1oBi; Oxford Picture Dictionary for Content Areas; students' own knowledge of history, civics, geography that they can use for connecting previous experiences or understandings to new content #ELLChat
A4) I love the National Geogrpahic books on short topics with bolded vocabulary and lots of pictures. I used them extensively for social studies and science. #ELLCHAT
A3) I regularly use @Newsela too, with leveled text. Recently used articles to teach about MLK Day and to build background knowledge for #SOTU. #ELLCHAT
