A1 cant remember last time I ever had a ‘test’ for a job. Real tests come in the form of goals, teamwork and collaboration. Why then do we test obedience and memorization?#formativechat
Agreed. For my interview for the job I just got it was a Performance Task to show what I knew. Much more powerful and gave me voice and choice in how I handled the task. #formativechat

A1-Traditional Test- usually produce a written document, such as quiz, exam, or paper. Example of question types- True/ False, Short answer, multiple choice, ect.
#formativechat
A1: A ‘traditional test’ is multiple choice and only checks for rote memorization w/ little talk afterward. Alternatives to multiple choice that allow for interaction and debate are Kahoots, Quizziz, Flipgrid, GoFormative, and EdjiNotes. #formativechat
A1: Traditional tests focus more on product than process and usually focus on a single "right" answer. Lower level problem types, more rote in nature. Alternatives - observations, interviews, rich performance tasks. #formativechat
A1: Traditional test is something where you communicate in some "hard" form (written, multiple choice, oral exam). I really like portfolio style assessment instead, or similar "creative" assessments like designing a physics lab or experiment yourself. #formativechat
A1: In school written, true/false, MC, essay. In culinary world you also have a practical - you have to make stuff to show you really know "the answers" #formativechat#edmodochat
Yes, and it’s usually the one answer that the teacher feels is the best answer and only tests if the Ss were listening or taking notes. They aren’t applying the knowledge. #formativechat

#formativechat A1: I consider a traditional test as no talking, nothing on your desks, and a set of questions in various formats that run the entire Bloom's Taxonomy (mine have MC/fill-in-blank/short ans/graphic interp/extended response) My fav alternative is a unit long project
A1 Traditonal test- multiple choice, matching, t/f, short answer—uninspired and lackluster. I like using collaborative poster sessions/creations. Two heads think better than one and provides time for peer and self evaluation and critique. #formativechat
A1 Usually a ‘traditional’ test has limited ways to respond and many times Ss focus on what they think the T wants for an answer. Alts include open ended activities that allow for variety of ways to show deeper understanding. Use oral, media, and other medium. #formativechat
great GIF to go with a great response! Love how you bring up the word "cover"! I think this is often associated with traditional tests and prep. #formativechat
A1: alternative to traditional test could be providing students with an answer and then asking what the question could be or to justify why it’s the answer. #formativechat
Definitely can be a stressful experience, a one and done for grading in some cases, and Ss left feeling defeated w/no opp for revising and growing #formativechat
A1: “Traditional” assessments don’t account for st strengths and needs, they are one size fit all, they aren’t adaptive, and they don’t drive instruction... fav alternative is @IXLLearning Continuous Disgnostic! #formativechat#edtech#EdTechChat#LeadUpChat
#formativechat a1 Paper tests are traditional but really projects and practicumd replace them. Show how rather than describe how. I always think of these as being more IRL.
#FormativeChat A traditional test to me sit down- m/c & short answer, individual and quiet- alternative I use collaborative assessments- my favorite is justification and connections line, Edcamps & class debates- any chance to problem solve together
I have had Ss share their WHY behind an answer on tests in years past, and while it was not the 1 that I picked, I had to agree w/their take on it #formativechat
It's important to use a variety of question types when crafting a meaningful assessment not only to get a more complete understanding of student progress but also to honor #studentchoice ! #formativechat

New test should allow for more than one outcome and allow Ss room to justify and back up their ideas. I like cER type Q’s that leave room for growth and multiple ways to show mastery #formativechat
A1: traditional- assessing onlynone way. Requires more skills than showing you understand concepts like reading question, figuring out “best answer,” being able to select correct answer with appropriate spatial skills, etc. #formativechat
Precisely! If we are preparing for career and life, pen and paper tests are not the right way to go. When was the last time you took a job related test? #formativechat
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
@EdjiNotes allows you to place docs, images, etc.on the task and have students highlight, comment in text, emoji, interact, etc.. and then the T can see all of the interaction and thinking almost like a Tweetdeck feed. Super cool. Nice for marking up the text. #formativechat
Traditional tests are usually multiple choice/short answer. For science, I like the idea of a laboratory practical where students perform some of the tasks they've been practicing in the lab or even design an experiment. #formativechat
agreed! An assessment of learning doesn't need to be limiting! Students should be empowered to take concepts further and make personal connections with them! #formativechat
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
While I don't disagree, there are a lot of tests in professions: OAEs, content knowledge exam, any classes related to PD, some PD has at least surveys with T/F, MC, short answer, #formativechat
In reply to
@ginoloko, @Freymuthscience, @davidwkwan
A1: Traditional tests look the same for all. I want to use assessments this year that allow students to show me what they know, but they choose how. #formativechat
A2: With the absence of traditional tests, Ss would be able to have more voice and choice in the learning process through hyperdocs, project-based learning, and genius hours that promote multiple paths and opportunities for the Ss true voice to shine. #fomrativechat
A1 Traditional tests tend to be fill in the blank, multiple choice, short answer with an occasional essay. Nowadays I use more problem based, real world issues that require the Ss to come up w/ practical solutions and require them to express their opinions. #formativechat
A1b: love to assess same thing in diff ways. Match cards. Demonstrate or act out, Tell me what you know orally, draw a pic, frayer model, RAFT, etc. based on the strength of individual ss. #formativechat
A1: Traditional tests: one correct answer, based on assigned content, usually resulting in regurgitating info. Favorite alternatives: @Flipgrid monitoring conversations between students, MRS, @KaganOnline strategies #formativechat
A2: What?! No traditional tests?! No paper copies? Oh My! It can't be done! #formativechat I heard many say :( What about state testing? It's the only way to get "the data"..
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
A2 Provide choices for Ss to demonstrate learning, a video, teach a lesson, #pbl , other options exist that are not paper and pencil, rigid format #formativechat
A2 With all of the ways we have to give feedback and formatively assess we can allow Ss more choice in how they will show what they know through so many diff mediums #FormativeChat
I do love all of the choices we have with #edtech and even w/o tech, let Ss create more, have conversations, set new goals and continue learning as part of process #formativechat
A2 See what interest Ss and where they are at through formative assessment then build from there. Make those connections and tie it into an assessment that can deepen and stretch what the mind already knows by exploration and creation. #formativechat
#formativechat Labs and interactive stations, PBL, Socratic Seminars, Graffiti Walls. Let students design their own format to demonstrate knowledge- let them create with the makerspace or record a podcast - skies the limit on options based on interest
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
A2 - using #formativeassessment to determine Ss strengths and weaknesses in understanding and make instructional decisions and allow for #studentvoice to determine how learning objectives can be not only met but part of bigger learning process #formativechat
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
#formativechat A2: there are a large number of options available, some already mentioned, student choice is huge! I would also caution and remind parents of students of high stakes standardized tests, that these are as good at preparing their learners
A2: Providing Ss with multiple options to demonstrate their understanding on a topic is critical to facilitate choice in the classroom. Ts must be willing to think beyond the product. #formativechat
I love RAFT. It always shows how well Ss can think outside of the box. For those who don’t know:
R - Role
A - Audience
F - Form
T - Topic
You could have Ss be a plant (R) telling the cloud (A) how they feel photosynthesis happening (T) in a form of a poem (F) #formativechat
A1b: love to assess same thing in diff ways. Match cards. Demonstrate or act out, Tell me what you know orally, draw a pic, frayer model, RAFT, etc. based on the strength of individual ss. #formativechat
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
A2 Ss must be able to practice essential skills (ie soft skills) throughout the learning process. We have to change the instruction before to help Ss learn how to “test” if we expect them to assess non traditionally #formativechat
#formativechat a2 We've translated stories, researched then tested soil for growing conditions, prepared a meal. This way you can test how they conduct themselves too. All the prep really tests them too
A2 Menu boards... Let kids use their strengths to demonstrate their knowleddge.
Ask them... How do you want to show me you have got this? #formativechat
A2 in this age of edu and technology that we are in, tests should be more representative of how we learned it instead of just what we learned.. #formativechat
A2: Optimally I would like to see a lot of response options for students in assessment, i.e. oral response, written response, project based response. I would be elated if a student rapped about Coulombs law for me instead of doing a calculation. #formativechat
A2: Last year I asked Ss to evaluate some writing. 1 of my Ss asked if he had to write his explanation; he wanted to record it. I said if you can do all that is expected in a different way- go for it- he did. Another drew a comic;we need to let ideas come from them.#formativechat
Here is Question 2: In the absence of traditional tests, how can we build in more opportunities for student voice and choice throughout the learning process? #formativechat
A2: ask ss. What they want to learn, how and when they want to learn it, how they want to show they learned it, how we will know they learned it, and when they are ready to show it. It’s all about their learning- not our timeframe. #formativechat
Yes, as long as the T does not have to grade the SAME thing over and over again. Ts like the variety of the project-based learning. It shows the diverse Ss in the class and the level of learning for each. #formativechat
A2: Optimally I would like to see a lot of response options for students in assessment, i.e. oral response, written response, project based response. I would be elated if a student rapped about Coulombs law for me instead of doing a calculation. #formativechat
Awesome answer Jon, I have used some portions of multiple choice bc likely in the future, Ss will take these exams and some may count for the whole course grade #formativechat
A1: Any assessment of knowledge that pits people against each other to prove they know something. Instead, why not work as a team, use resources, and answer authentic questions? #formativechat
A2: In the absence of a traditional test, we can start from the beginning of the learning unit and ask our, "what would be a great product of learning given what we are going to learn?"
#formativechat
Students can share their ideas speaking as rehearsal for writing of scientific explanations . They can solve real world problems where they use learned skills #FormativeChat
A3 TS could use with a rubric to evaluate student performance.
But ONE KEY factors for each ss should be:
-task meets & is related to unit goals.
#formativechat
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
Great response, the "if you can do it and go for it!" and if it doesn't work, then great way for the student to think through the why and where to go from there #formativechat
Blended learning strategies and tools can really help to provide multiple options and choices for students. Thanks for sharing these tasks! #formativechat
great thought! It's important to build in opportunities for students to lift each other up! Encourages collaborative and individual growth mindset! #formativechat
A3: My criteria may change for evaluation only if it is a summative assessment. Mostly Ss aren’t evaluated on formative assessments because they are in the practice stages trying to understand and try again without the fear of criteria and evaluation. #formativechat
A2 #formativechat Freedom of expression is the best gift we can give our students. Close the chapter on traditional and let the pages of individuality and creativity open for all to see- this is learning at its most inspiring
A3- Have ss check in with you. Randomly select 5-6 ss and check in with them each day by the end of the week you should be able to reach the entire class to know where they are in their performance.
#formativechat
A3 if we always start with the standards then the criteria shouldn’t change no matter the product Assess the learning not the prettiest product #FormativeChat
A2: Project based learning, choice boards, allowing students opportunities to show what they know, receive feedback, and reassess until they reach mastery #formativechat
A3: Interesting question - keeping the standards and learning objectives for a given task front and center helps me to make sure that I don't veer from the intended goals and targets of the assessment. #formativechat
A3- Have the students share or post their work in Google Classroom. This way you can randomly click on each assignment to see how students are doing. You can provide feedback in real time to help guide ss in the right direction.
#formativechat
A3 I use the WIDA standards and performance indicators for ELLs. They measure Ss at their appropriate levels. The criteria doesn’t change while the topics do. #formativechat
A3 Not sure about that.... Does it show mastery, does it fit the parameters for the expectations, was the agreed on process followed. These all allow for conversations. #formativechat
A2 I think that student choice and voice should be considered in the pre work as well. If you all decide on criteria together, they are more willing to own it and deliver! #FormativeChat
totally! This is not only an opportunity but a necessity if we are going to ask students to interact with different audiences and collab. with peers! #formativechat
A2 #formativechat Freedom of expression is the best gift we can give our students. Close the chapter on traditional and let the pages of individuality and creativity open for all to see- this is learning at its most inspiring
A3- Have the students share or post their work in Google Classroom. This way you can randomly click on each assignment to see how students are doing. You can provide feedback in real time to help guide ss in the right direction.
#formativechat
A3 In workplaces, we ask for paper exams rarely with a pass/fail...most assessment is with a team that asks what can we do to make this better...the process is tweaked and prodded until the outcome is reached #formativechat
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
#formativechat A3 I try not to - I am looking for the same outcome, do they have the tools and can they build something resembling the desired outcome with them? essential questions, standards based learning, big ideas, etc.
#formativechat I evaluate my students based on growth. I think speaking to them weekly in 1-minute check ins and providing time for feedback and reflection is the best way to get a truly vibrant landscape of their learning. Evaluation needs to be fluid & flexible not a snapshot
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3: Absolutely! Sts all have different lvls of prior knowledge, strengths, and needs thus we should not judge all by the same criteria. You have to ask what does mastery look like and what is essential for the st to know. #SmartScore#formativechat#LeadUpChat#EdTechChat#EdTech
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3: I look for the same concepts that I create from broken down Standards. As I conference with them, if one is missing, I ask them to tell me about the missing concept. #formativechat
A3 - yes. Still need to meet curricular outcomes. But how they are met and assessed can be worked on by Ts and Ss together. Criteria can be created together. Using #backwarddesign can be a huge part of this process. It can be done. #formativechat
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3: If the criteria is focused on the specific skill or thinking strategy then it shouldn’t matter what the physical form of the assessment is. Problem is many rubrics include criteria focussed on items that have little to do with what you are actually assessing. #formativechat
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3- Have a sentence frame ready for the parent email to help the ss:
Dear Mom and Dad,
we are working on ______. We are suppose to be at this point ______. I am at this point _____. My action step is ______. Love you!
#formativechat
A3- Get parents involved early in the learning. If a student is not doing what they are suppose to have them write an email home. If they are doing what they are doing send a positive email home. This will help with keeping ss accountable.
#formativechat
A3: Absolutely! Sts all have different lvls of prior knowledge, strengths, and needs thus we should not judge all by the same criteria. You have to ask what does mastery look like and what is essential for the st to know. #SmartScore#formativechat#LeadUpChat#EdTechChat#EdTech
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3: Pretty much, if they demonstrate they know it or can do it, then they "got it". Ss usually need guidelines like a rubric, checklist and objectives as a roadmap #formativechat
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
A3 Formative tasks, no. It truly depends on what type of summative task is being used. There might be multiple components being utilized so different criteria for different parts. #formativechat
A3 #formativechat As learners we all have our strengths and we need a showcase in which to display them. But we also have room for growth and we need a garden in which to sprout & flourish- assessments need to embody the whole spectrum
Question 3 is up: Does your criteria for evaluating student performance change as you use different methods of assessment? How do you account for this? #formativechat
I've used this strategy. It was nice to have all of the answers to a given exit ticket consolidated in one spreadsheet. Sometimes providing feedback can be tricky but there are lots of hacks for it! #formativechat
#formativechat I sent some positive emails home and I provide comments via the electronic grading system we use - the number of positive parent contacts about it were unreal
A3: I need more characters for this. Rubrics are a real problem. We also need to ensure criteria is being used for judgement. Not checklist type stuff. It had a title. They used a ruler. #formativechat
Plus:
* You can create a QR code and have students scan and submit.
* Google Forms can lock Ss in now until they are finished so they don’t go out of Forms.
Minus:
* It can become redundant. Maybe mix it up/ give choice:
- Form
- Flipgrid
- GoFormative
- Quizizz
#Formativechat
A3: Our criteria is focused on learning targets, so it does not change based on different methods. I have thought of having 2 Focus Correction areas and letting students personalize the third based on feedback, enrichment, etc. #formativechat
#formativechat a3 The criteria may change as you can also offer less support but you may also gain things like leadership skills you weren't expecting. Ss grow up suddenly sometimes.
Thanks, Rachelle! I was scrolling through answers before hopping in and wasn't sure this was what you were looking for...but it's me. :) #formativechat
A3: I am always assessing where they are on the learning scale towards the standard learning target. I use a variety of formatives that may or may not be graded. I use a rubric for final assessments, giving feedback throughout #formativechat
Thank you for an awesome chat! Makes my Monday shine and the rest of my week feel complete. Always great ideas and keeps me focused on what matters - the Ss. Thank you everyone! #formativechat
As we wrap up #formativechat, we'd love to thank you all for joining! It's inspiring to hear all the innovative ways you are helping students find deep meaning in learning ! #formativechat
A2: In the absence of a traditional test, we can start from the beginning of the learning unit and ask our, "what would be a great product of learning given what we are going to learn?"
#formativechat
Thank you for an awesome chat! Makes my Monday shine and the rest of my week feel complete. Always great ideas and keeps me focused on what matters - the Ss. Thank you everyone! #formativechat
This is something that I am going to dedicate myself at being more effective at. I totally agree with how powerful it can be. I appreciate this community for helping me reflect and get better. Doing some self #formativeassessment#formativechat 👍
A1- Trad. assessments don’t provide a true picture of consistency & mastery of learning. Ss need #immediatefeedback & learning at the right level of rigor to boost confidence....which will ultimately give them a greater voice in discussion. #formativechat
Be intentional withconnecting to every Ss everyday day...Instead of starting the yr with lessons, start with making connections...find out likes, dislikes, learning styles, etc...then just ask them what they would like & hold them accountable...teams work best #formativechat
Single point rubrics. Makes me wonder if ss, especially our senior ones could fill it in themselves. Empower themselves at making AND marking end of project
#formativechat#aussieed#stucentclass
Want your rubrics to focus your students on the target and identify for them what they need to do to get closer to the bullseye? Try this: https://t.co/S0FNzEuIrr
A2: Provide students choices in their learning, ensure instruction is at the right level of rigor, and teach #problemsolving, behavior, & creativity as a skill, rather than “just expecting them to know.” #formativechat
