A0: Mark G, from Southern NJ. Co-Founder of the #MinecraftEDU Chat and elementary Educator, now Tech Director and Training Consultant. Excited on bringing #CSforAll to everyone. Working to embed Computational Thinking as a mindset for any type of learning.
A1: I have already begun playing some games with my 4 year old son to infuse Computational Thinking and Pre-coding skills. Robot Turtles, Snap Circuits and MakeBlocks MBot. #MinecraftEDU
Q1 - #MinecraftEdu Follow up question. How often do we stop and think, what if I let my kids go and tynker with code to make whatever they wanted. What's the worst?
CTD. What if I asked them to code something related to their course, but gave them the freedom to design learning? Isn't this #MinecraftEdu in a Nutshell?
Q1 - #MinecraftEdu Follow up question. How often do we stop and think, what if I let my kids go and tynker with code to make whatever they wanted. What's the worst?
A1 - Spelling words is kinda logical thinking and computational thinking and experts recommend that wicked early. Pre-school. In fact, #Literacy and #Coding have some solid similarities. #MinecraftEDU (I before E except after C)
Years later and still waiting for one of these kids to innovate the way shoes are tied instead of the two loop system. There must be a better way to tie shoes! We put a man on the moon! (Velcro was a start) #MinecraftEDU
Agreed! A speaker was talking about that this year at the #fatihetz17 Summit in Turkey. #MinecraftEdu Language is CODE @yallsop What was his twitter again?
#MinecraftEdu PreK a lot seem to be saying. We'll talk about differentiation and levels, but maybe that's why #HourofCode Minecraft is so simple (easy).
I totally agree! It's all about Logical thinking. So many are stuck on idea that coding is only for programmers. But the skills built apply elsewhere too #MinecraftEdu
A1 - Its wonderful when we stop and slow down the pace of our teaching to let children play and tynker. #MinecraftEdu provides a blank canvas and gives kids a place to showcase their creativity. My 5-year old asked me how to spell "you are done" while playing #MinecraftEdu today
A2: The challenge for me has been working it into my English curriculum. I understand how it can be done...logical thinking, if/can statements, etc. I plan on integrating it into a few literature lessons...a combination of build & code. #MinecraftEdu
Your 5 Year old was making a GAME wasn't he/she? I think often we get caught in the "It's too advanced for them loop. Kids SURPIRSE when given freedom #MinecraftEdu
A2 - some common challenges include getting teachers to code. Using #PBL helps with logical thinking across the curriculum #minecraftedu#HourofCode#CSEDWeek

A2 - #Coding comes easily to a lot of students until two objects have to interact and that is like hitting a brick wall for most. Coding difficulty can go from easy to hard quickly when coding engaging aspects. #MinecraftEDU#CSEducationWeek
This is a big challenge. Not sure how to get the teachers to jump in and takes risks. I find teachers prefer didactic learning, even when coding can be very constructivist. #MinecraftEDU
A2: Our situation is unique, but when we've run coding programs we only have 1-2 hours onsite with the students. Challenged to get in the inspiration from museum objects AND coding in that time. #minecraftedu
A2 common problems with coding lack of skills to solve a problem easily - Soln: youtube, ask Pln, modify task, keep looking for the answer #MinecraftEDU
@tsuejohnson just finished her first #HourOfCode activity today and liked it. Teachers and students learning together can be a great experience #MinecraftEDU
In reply to
@BenSpieldenner, @bcalligy, @tsuejohnson
Well your input is always appreciated, even if you do come late, you gotta do what you gotta do! Excited to see your input in tonight's #MinecraftEdu Chat!
A3: For me differentiation may mean having some students write explanatory essays detailing builds, other students build what was described and some students assist peers from either group. #MinecraftEdu
A2) Ts think they can't teach this to Ss B/c they don't hold knowledge. This in fact is a wonderful opportunity to model the art of finding a guru/ leader/ teacher, in the form of YouTube channel, book or in person. #MinecraftEDU
A3 If the goal is to get them to code, we need to provide options. Some may enjoy drawing with code others games. @Sphero is another great tool to offer as an option #MinecraftEDU
We're looking into some kind of flipped classroom programs with an LMS, but it's tough. Piloting a program now that involves multiple visits throughout the year. #MinecraftEdu
Agreed. The more I play with #CodeBuilder, the more I see multiple options and paths simply within #MinecraftEDU, Agent is like a robot, Builder is like a program, then there is RedStone/CommandBlocks/NPCs. Oh My!
A2 - A challenge to teaching coding and logical thinking involves not simply telling students the answer to a problem, but instead providing students with challenges that contain clear instructions and enough time to figure things out #MinecraftEdu
A3 - Minecraft is a great way to foster individualized, self-paced learning - give students ownership of their learning! #MinecraftEDU#CSEDWeek#HourofCode
A3: As teachers we often differentiate through rigid models...coding allows students to work at their pace in a way that most challenges them. They get control! #MinecraftEdu
A3 open ended tasks and short workshops with explicit teaching on coding & logic for those who need/want it. Student #techsperts, student led how to sessions #MinecraftEDU
A3: Great question! We must excite students first before the learn how to code! Let's focus on the "why" to code rather than the "what" to code or "how" to code. Students will #FigureItOut if they are engaged and if it is relevant! #MinecraftEdu
A4: Can be used to teach writing skills...logical thinking, evidence based writing, organization in writing, details....great for writing! #MinecraftEdu
Great teachers can excite students to do anything!!! The students will believe they can be great coders if the teacher believes in them and conveys that message. #MinecraftEdu
A3 - As educators, we can support students of all ages, abilities and interests in coding by giving students the TIME to play and tynker in the classroom. This differentiation looks like play-based learning with #MinecraftEdu#gamify#GameDesignEdu
Another Strategy is simple Language and Vocabulary. Calling the Kids "Coders" "Programmers" "Developers" "Game Designers" helps put them in that mindset. #MinecraftEDU
A4 - Coding is the 'new literacy.' Computer literacy is just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic in the 21st century and should be added to every child's analytical ability #MinecraftEdu#CSEdWeek
A5 https://t.co/7tkCbbm6r5 4 Free online courses to teach teachers about CT and coding. If you join say hi to me I am the NSW project officer #minecraftedu
I couldn't agree more! It also helps us foster and promote a trial and error approach to problem solving. When Ss ask for help on a code issue, I always ask what hasn't worked so far. #MinecraftEDU#CSEdWeek
Q6~ I hope you enjoyed tonight's chat! Outro~ Name, Role, Location- Please share your most significant learning or favorite resources from tonight's #MinecraftEdu Chat
Good Evening and a Special Thanks to my Partner in Crafting @PBJellyGames and our amazing Student Co-Moderator @pickleberry1234 For an amazing Chat for #CSEducationWeek This chat is awesome because of our participants and Community. Thanks and GoodNight #MinecraftEdu
A6 Chris history teacher from ROWVA in IL. Great resources for coding thanks to @iMerinet and the motivation to keep on trying new things. Can't wait for out #codeconnection challenge Friday! #MinecraftEDU
