Research reported at #echa2018 shows that preservice teachers believe #gifted students are more likely to be introverted (a negative) and are less agreeable to work with. These preservice teachers enter the teaching profession with these attitudes.

Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about growing resilient gifted kids. #gtchat
I would differentiate between believing in your capacity to make something good happen despite a setback and optimism. Optimism can be disconnected from reality, and part of resilience is accepting the reality of what is even when it is disappointing. #gtchat
A2) Characteristics often common to gifted children and those children considered resilient include task commitment, a desire to learn, and reflectiveness as well as the ability to dream. #gtchat
Transforming Outstanding Potential in Outstanding Skills by Using Storytelling to Develop Intellectual Abilities of Gifted Students at Risk https://t.co/F7UYJUTiBY#gtchat
A3) Twice-exceptional students must deal with others’ perceptions of how ability should influence achievement. Failure to meet those expectations can negatively affect 2E students. #gtchat
A3) Cultivating resilience in 2e kids is crucial. They fail to live up to their sense of what they should be capable of and other people's expectations in so many ways and the potential for giving up is tremendous. #gtchat
A3) Resilience is so important for 2E students because they are continually struggling through difficulties and finding it hard to demonstrate what they understand #gtchat
We are already half way through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about growing resilient gifted kids! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation.
I see this a lot in transitions from Elem to Middle. Work, relationships, organization all get harder and for many, its the first time the going is tough. Need to be aware and support with resilience-based strategies #gtchat
A3) 2E students who may be at higher risk not to develop resilience and be successful could counter risk factors with a network of support from caring and nurturing adults. #gtchat
Q4) Validating the emotional reality of a student who is dealing with a setback and then asking an empowering question like "So what might you do differently next time?" or "What will you do now?" #gtchat

#a2 one crucial element is also trust - trust that there will be a tomorrow, that the rules won’t change arbitrarily... these things seem a given but are not for traumatized students of any socioeconomic group and for many students in poverty
A4) Teachers can act as role models for students by keeping emotions in check around students and encouraging positive interpersonal relationships. #gtchat
A4) Teachers can teach that risk-taking & even epic failure are anticipated parts of the creative process and make their classrooms safe places in which these can (and will) happen. #gtchat

YES! THIS ☝It's important that kids know that, yes, this feels like cap, and yes, you should let yourself feel that. But that THEN you dust yourself off and rejoin the living. #gtchat
A4) Introduce the stages of learning model and talk openly about how moving from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence is always unsettling and the process of getting through the incompetence to competence is usually not comfortable. #gtchathttps://t.co/sNyzb9g6Q3
YES! THIS ☝It's important that kids know that, yes, this feels like crap, and yes, you should let yourself feel that. But that THEN you dust yourself off and rejoin the living. #gtchat
A5) Parents can build resilience at home by expressing positive attitudes in difficult situations; displaying emotions such as love, gratitude, and hope; and providing a long-term caring relationship with their child. #gtchat
A5) When young children face an untenable situation, parents can brainstorm with them to understand what is happening and how they might develop a plan to overcome the problem. #gtchat
A5) Many of the same strategies as teachers. Validate the emotional unpleasantness, assume they have the power to make a different choice, help them see options, and celebrate every time they recover. #gtchat
A5) Understand that your gifted child is putting herself or himself under more pressure than any human should ever withstand. You can afford to back off from that and be there for her or him when failure does happen, to let your kid know it's NOT the end of the world. #gtchat
A5) Parents also need to realize the importance of relinquishing control over their child’s life and allow the child to experience ‘agency’ – being able to solve problems on their own; to take control of their own life’s narrative. #gtchat
A4 and A5) One of the things adults can do is make sure that gifted kids are being exposed to a variety of places where they actually experience failure, mistakes, setbacks, etc. so they have opportunities to practice bouncing back. Don't just play to their strengths. #gtchat

A6) Mindfulness, gratitude and empathy are powerful factors in developing resilience in children and adults need to provide the necessary time to allow them to be integrated into their child’s life. #gtchat
A6) Encourage children to express gratitude when good things happen in their lives and empathy for others who may be having experiences which they haven’t had. #gtchat
A6) Name the emotions the kids around you are experiencing. Or even better, describe the physical clues that you are reading and them tell them you are guessing about their inner experience. This demonstrates and teaches empathy. #gtchat
A6) Resilience trumps failure and adults can serve as role models who exhibit mindfulness, gratitude and empathy in everyday tasks and when responding to the needs of their children. #gtchat
I know that when I first started parenting, I needed to make sure "everything is okay - always" as far as the kids were aware. I've learned it's important for them to be a part of (some of) my failures as well as my successes. #gtchat
A6) gratitude - explain to kids the virtues of being EXplicitly grateful. Describe your gratitude for even the little things. Every day.
empathy - don't shield kids from tragedy. Be there with them for the encounter. Help them step outside themselves safely. #gtchat
