You reply with same hashtag #AppleEDUchat and A1, A2, A3, etc. and with your response, encouragement, etc. FUN!
Intro: Please share your name, where you are from, and something fun about yourself. Keep checking #AppleEDUchat hashtag and refresh to see everyone’s response. Greet others. Follow each other.
Hey there @kellycroy Thanks for hosting #AppleEDUchat tonight. I’m tweeting from a very snowy Maine state! #EdLeadership is a great topic to warm us up!
Hey everyone! Karen Bosch from metro Detroit. Not sure how long I’ll stay awake, but here at least for the start! Looking forward to @kellycroy ‘s “leadership”for this chat! #AppleEDUchat
Amy joining from a snowy Cincinnati today! Something fun about me...I have 3 small girls who keep my wheels spinning! Always striving to set a good example for them! #AppleEDUchat
A2: I’m inspired by my colleagues…close and far away. The creativity and passion that I see in others helps to inspire and influence my voice in the EDU realm. #AppleEDUchat
A1: The principals I have worked with throughout my years teaching inspire me. Some of them are great examples of how to run a building and work with each other. Other inspire me to do better than their example... 😟 #AppleEDUchat
Hello, My name is Kyle and I am from Austin Peay State University. I believe that we are Educational leaders because we have to lead an individual into areas that they are not comfortable or have never been.
#AppleEDUchat
A1: @YongZhaoEd is an amazing educator who knows that creativity is essential to a quality education. His ideas and leadership in the field is truly refreshing. https://t.co/HOB6K9NwUA#AppleEduChat
A1: One of my professors influences my leadership or "future leadership". She teaches us about how to be empowered in schools that are underserved/low income. She motivates me to make an impact. #AppleEDUChat
So easy... my colleagues around the world who I have meet through collaboration. #Appleteacher and #ADE haven’t hurt either. The only down side is that our #DanielsonRubric prevents so many teachers in my building from collaborating in the same way. 😢 #AppleEduChat
Awww - yah, it was a hectic Thanksgiving week here as well SOOO happy to get back on track here and connect with you all #KathysPortraitStudio#AppleEDUchat
Jodie from Texas - middle school science - something fun about me is that all my pets have Harry Potter names (or maybe thats just weird) #AppleEDUChat
To be blunt: disagree; to be more nuanced, while we all might demonstrate qualities of leadership, we aren't truly leaders until we have our 2nd or 3rd follower so to speak -- where our work actually moves others forward on a path we help define #appleeduchat
A1: I think whether you like it or not, being in education puts you in some sort of a leadership position. (Doesn't mean everyone uses thier power for good!) #AppleEDUchat
A1 We are all edu leaders. We look to provide what is best for our Ss through continued prof growth and innovation. When something works we share. As a result, my Ss and colleagues inspire and influence...#AppleEDUchat#edleadership
So easy... my colleagues around the world who I have meet through collaboration. #Appleteacher and #ADE haven’t hurt either. The only down side is that our #DanielsonRubric prevents so many teachers in my building from collaborating in the same way. 😢 #AppleEduChat
A1: everyone is a leader at something they are passionate about. Although, it is important that we take time to learn from the leaders even if they are students, faculty, the community, etc. #AppleEDUChat
A1: It is the students that inspire me to lead, my own children included. I want to see change in our district and took on the role in technology, because no one else was stepping up to the plate. #AppleEDUChat
Be certain to check out the impact @YongZhaoEd has had in shaping the impact of @RWScholars@EdCorps; fantastic organization with brilliant folks at its core making entrepreneurship come alive in classrooms #appleeduchat
In reply to
@JJBoylan, @YongZhaoEd, @YongZhaoEd, @RWScholars, @EdCorps
A1 I like to observe other leaders in action and find qualities that they poses that would be beneficial for all. Books and pod casts help too😉 #AppleEDUchat
The principal at @coppelleast, @coachsprings, gets to know and love all of the kids that go to school there. They line up at the end of the year just to give her goodbye hugs, and come back for more after they’re gone! #AppleEDUchat
In reply to
@kellycroy, @coppelleast, @coachsprings
A.1- Leadership is influenced by a person abilities. I truly think that if persons abilities are pushed by their passion, they can be an influential leader and an effective one at that. My Coach for football gave great examples of that day in and day out.
#AppleEDUchat
A1: As a pre-service teacher, my leadership is influenced by my professors and peers at the university. The students that I work with now, and that I will serve in the future, inspire me to continuously grow in a leadership role #AppleEDUchat
A1: I also believe that my students help to inspire my leadership. When they give positive feedback on something, it gives me confidence to share with more edu peeps. #AppleEDUchat
Seriously. Books help me so much. Anything from @dbc_inc. Anytime I need more inspiration than twitter, I get a new book authored by educators! #AppleEDUChat
that's a good point AND I'm thinking if I made that argument to a school board or general public they'd say, "okay.. I see what you're saying and that's not what we meant," y'know? #appleeduchat
A1: The administrators ive worked for, the great authors that I learn from, my PLN across Twitter...but mostly the staff and students that I have the privilege of working with every day! They are the people who make being a leader worth the hard work! #AppleEDUchat
A1 I will echo the sentiments shared by others. My awesome #PLN is a positive force in helping me develop my pedagogy. I am inspired by many and learn from them on a daily basis. #appleeduchat
A1:
Every teacher and experience you have as an educator influences your leadership in one way or another. Challenge yourself with new experiences and ask the opinions of your teachers. If you truly listen you will be influenced. #AppleEDUchat
Truth be told, I'll settle for everyone being enthusiastic or even simply positive about education. Far too many at the university level view education and teaching as an obligation ... when it's kind of the reason why universities even exist. #AppleEDUChat
StarterA. Agree. First, everyone has something to offer. Also, questions and responses from students often guide the direction of a class. #AppleEDUchat
I’ve been very impressed with@#HigherEd twitter; great challenging productive conversations out here- following #AppleEDUchat as well as individual educators!
Bonus1: Name some books, blogs, podcast or resources you use to grow as a leader in your school? Include photos and links if you can!
A bonus question in a Twitter Chat? I am sneaky!
A1: who or what inspires leadership? My colleagues and Ss who support, innovate and create with empathy. My colleagues who challenge my thinking with encouragement and just the right amount of push #AppleEDUChat
Janea from NM home sick but still want to be a part of the conversation A1: so many people inspire me and have helped me grow as a educational leader!! I feel my PLN and fellow #ADE’s have made a huge difference in my teaching practice #AppleEDUChat
A1: terrific colleagues at my school and those I’ve met through professional organizations like @ASEE_DC & @ChEnected & the #ADE program - in #HigherEd in particular. #AppleEDUchat.
I love listening to @WiredEducator podcast to get inspired by other educators. Mostly, I’m mowing the lawn or on a long run, and it is a great way to multitask! #AppleEDUchat
Agree. We need to train teachers about leadership skills. If we learn to be leaders in the classroom our students will be leading their communities for a good present and future. Greetings from Nicaragua.🇳🇮#AppleEDUChat
Truth be told, I'll settle for everyone being enthusiastic or even simply positive about education. Far too many at the university level view education and teaching as an obligation ... when it's kind of the reason why universities even exist. #AppleEDUChat
A2: I make a lot of lists! I use Google Keep to store all of my lists and I color code based on priority. I try to get most of my work done during the week so I can have weekends off to recharge. #AppleEDUChat
A.2- Leaders have to be great delegators. Some thing they just cannot get to and a leader cannot base what they cannot get to as their worth, but instead what they did accomplish s their worth. That makes choosing what to accomplish very important.
#AppleEDUchat
Also…journal your experiences. Whenever you can, reflect and share. Others around you can provide feedback…those self reflections are key though. #AppleEDUchat
A1: my mentors and fellow coworkers motivate me to learn daily. However, my students and children inspire me to continuously seeks PD that can make my instruction and coaching more meaningful. #AppleEDUChat
Q2: Leaders make time for everything by staying on task and organizing their priorities. Personally, I use an agenda book to check off task as I go. I believe the most important is what comes first or what others need the most. #AppleEDUchat
Bonus1: Name some books, blogs, podcast or resources you use to grow as a leader in your school? Include photos and links if you can!
A bonus question in a Twitter Chat? I am sneaky!
A2: Really? My therapist tells me I overextend myself and has me actively saying no to things. It is a hard word to say. I think this question would best be answered by me at a later date. #AppleEduChat
A2: leaders many times don’t know how to say know. They are re energized by being with like minded people and that drives me to continue. S always seem to be the focus & the thought that we can always do more #AppleEDUchat
A2: I try to balance everything and it doesn't always work so I'd love to hear some tips! I do think prioritizing self care is important though, because we have to be able to function in a healthy way to be an effective leader. #AppleEDUChat
Q2: Wow, perfect timing for this question. Honestly, as of right now, I'm not! I'm simply trying to keep my head above water. But as long as you're trying, I think that is all you can demand of yourself. Effort, more effort, and self-care! #appleeduchat
A1: My Ss - I think about the type of leaders I would want to shape and inspire them & the world for which I want them to be prepared. Also I am so lucky to have amazing mentors and friends who inspire me, including the #ADEdu community. #AppleEduChat
A2: One quality great leaders have is to be able to see the future. What is five years down the road, possibly ten. If it makes a difference for the future of our Ss…top priority. Sometimes the short term hurdles can be overcome with collaborative Educators! #AppleEDUChat
Abonus1 The following article is one I like sharing: When School Leaders Empower Teachers, Better Ideas Emerge https://t.co/ymK9na11Xe Lucky enough to work with an adm who embodies these sentiments. #AppleEDUchat
A2: This is something I struggle with - I have lots of great ideas, and get inspired and energized going to conferences. When I get back home, though, need to find a way to actualize - delegate? Fine like-minded folks and divide and conquer? #appleeduchat
A1 My struggles w/ anxiety & depression; truly, the work I do is largely shaped by my mental health -- it influences everything from the relationships I form to the way I process criticism to the degree with which I listen w empathy #appleeduchat#75milofeffexordaily
A1: terrific colleagues at my school and those I’ve met through professional organizations like @ASEE_DC & @ChEnected & the #ADE program - in #HigherEd in particular. #AppleEDUchat.
Leaders also need to be flexible and move with the changing situations and obstacles that crop up! YES, make a plan and be ready to modify as needed #AppleEDUchat
A2: leaders many times don’t know how to say know. They are re energized by being with like minded people and that drives me to continue. S always seem to be the focus & the thought that we can always do more #AppleEDUchat
Q2: There isn't time for everything, but the priority always goes to the students. If plans need more refinement, then that comes first. If a significant amount of students will be impacted by mentoring or speaking, then that becomes a greater priority. #appleEDUchat
A2: I find that I end up working a lot of evenings - nonoptimal. Regular adminstrative stuff during the day, creative stuff in off hours. #appleeduchat
A2: When I first became a digital learning coach, my emails went through the roof. I made it part of my goals to schedule time every morning dedicated simply to organizing and responding to emails. Schedule and defend time! #AppleEDUChat
A2: prioritizing is a must! I use a digital calendar that can be shared with staff for co-teaching, but I also use a mix of reminders and traditional post-it’s. The items that are current priority are stuck by my track pad. #AppleEDUChat
A2 Great leaders have to trust their staff and learn to delegate. Lists help keep everyone organized and the use of timers/alarms help keep us to a schedule. #AppleEDUchat
I love this. There is SO much. The list could go on forever. Pick the things that will impact kids. Make kids LIVES and LEARNING better. The rest will come. (The rest for me? Grading, dress code inforcing, etc.) #AppleEDUChat
Yes, need to continue networking and collaborating to keep the inspiration fresh and moving. It’s great to start a new project with someone or talk about it with colleagues (PLN) to help you keep motivated - join #AppleEDUchat every week!
Bonus2A: Every dang blasted time I try to leverage technology to help me stay organized, I realized that I am a creature beflummoxed by routine & I've yet to find a tool that fits my brain rather than demands I adjust to its constraints #appleeduchat
A1 Students, faculty, and staff, but primarily the students. They’re the main reason why we’re there, and many voice similar needs and concerns. There are times when we need to stand up for them and try to make their experience better. #AppleEDUchat
Speaks so much truth. My need to try and impress is sadly my success drive. Finding peace and joy rather than fury is a balancing act for me. #AppleEDUChat
A1 My struggles w/ anxiety & depression; truly, the work I do is largely shaped by my mental health -- it influences everything from the relationships I form to the way I process criticism to the degree with which I listen w empathy #appleeduchat#75milofeffexordaily
Q2: I have been trying to prioritize things that will, first impact student outcomes (social/academic) in positive ways, and second make life easier for teachers. Also, balancing quick wins with long term plans for big wins. #AppleEDUchat
A2: @MargeryCovello has shared two quotes with me that remind me of the importance of time & time management. “Time is a finite resource. You can’t make time.” And to keep things moving, “In the interest of time, we have to move on.” #followher#AppleEduChat
A1:
Many things influence leadership not just in education but in life. I have been influenced not only by people but by books as well. FCulturize, Quiet Strength, Above the Line, The Four Agreements and Getting Rid of the Gorilla have all been beneficial. #AppleEDUChat
Yes. I agree. Same for me. I’ve always been inspired by my students. They always push me to become my best as a teacher. They were my most honest accountability partners. Are used to display my goals in the classroom. They held me to them. #appleEDUChat
A2: I find that my day is full of To Do lists…from Siri reminders to scrap paper to writing notes on my hands. My kids crack up every time I write something on my hand to bring to school the next day. I have an awesome family that understands my scattered nature! #AppleEDUchat
A1 the desire to level the playing field for many of our disadvantaged children, I understand it first hand, I can provide the background knowledge to create und. or design resources which provide the best possible learning outcomes #AppleEDUchat
Q2: You can't make time for everything! We could all spend 24 hours a day in our offices or classrooms. Make time for your family and allow your teachers to make time for theirs. Be present when you are at school and when you are home be present at home!#AppleEDUchat
A2 Working hard to make a plan and being ok when that plan disintegrates before your eyes. It is about balance, self care, finding the moments to get work done, and being ok with delegating. #appleeduchat
A3. I prefer finding research to back my decisions. Too many decisions are based on sound-bites or myth. I want to do what's best for my learners so give me something proven. #AppleEDUchat
A2: planning ahead helps me. I use my calendar to mark everything do! Even travel times between schools. Podcast PD in the car keeps me inspired! thanks @WiredEducator There is never enough time! But Prioritizing helps! #AppleEDUChat
A3: Students! I usually find out that what my intial thoughts were on an issue are wrong ;-) I had lunch with students today and they can be so insightful about things we struggle with. #appleeduchat
A2. I remember asking a colleague I deeply admired about how he manages to be an amazing dad, teacher, husband, coach and make it all work. He looked at me with the most sincere eyes and said, "I don't." I8 years ago. I remember it daily. #appleeduchat
a1) Colleagues and students inspire me to be a better leader. The hail being creating a learning environment that’s designed for successful outcomes. #appleEduchat
A3: I’m a big fan of “the literature”- let’s see what’s published on this. And looking at local information sources (enrollment, time to graduation, etc). But it’s also about human connections and finding out what people think, too! #AppleEDUchat
A3: Data obviously plays a big part in decision making, but I think getting to know your staff and students and determining their needs drives most decisions! #AppleEDUchat
A3 I love to be challenged and constantly involving myself in new projects that seem to be driving toward great ideas, new strategies, disruption of the norm! #AppleEDUchat Love pushing the envelope with inspiring colleagues #edtech207
A3: What guides me to make decisions is Google and listening to my professors. My coaches also impact my decisions as well as my teammates. #AppleEDUchat
I am right there with you. It seems every year I try something new (this year it is Wunderlist) and by Nov I have a mishmosh of post-its, texts, pictures, and strings on my fingers to help me get my work done. #AppleEduChat
A2: I have learned that I have to maintain a calendar, and be sure to build myself some time into it to work on some of the projects I am involved in. #AppleEDUchat
A.3- I use Google an Google Scholar a lot to find scholarly articles dealing with history. My lesson plans and TO-DO lists also guides me. I also like just talking about good ideas then actually looking them up.
#AppleEDUChat
A3: my kids. Empathy. Current events. I still try and be like Rafe Esquith in Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire mixed with The Book Whisperer @donalynbooks#AppleEDUChat
Workflow , Siri Shortcuts are critical for my executive function and organization, as a teacher @hapara_team is an incredible organizational support for T’s & Ss. I’m liking Zoom for web conference #AppleEduChat
Thank you my friend; it's a reality for so many of educators & too many feel we cannot own these struggles in the public lest we be considered ill suited to our jobs; love the podcast @allevin18 produces about this very issue #appleeduchat
Bonus3:
How do you gather the info and data you use to make decisions? Where does it come from, how do you organize it? Help us out. Do you survey? How? Examples? What info is important. Go.
#AppleEDUchat
I’m a big fan of Notes to stay organized!! I constantly forget what I have done and what needs to done for my masters so I keep track on my notes and it syncs on all devices!! 🙌#winning#AppleEduChat
It is a hard thing to learn and to remember! There are times I am looking at my work wondering how it got to be so....I feel bad asking for the help but have to remind myself that the fresh perspective is probably a good thing. #AppleEDUchat#EdLeadership
Q3: @iste@AppleEDU have been huge resources to help guide decisions. I value my fellow #ADE’s and I have to say twitter chats have really changed my personal PD along with running @EdcampUSA and @APSEdCamp#AppleEDUChat
A3: If your institution has a good office of Institutional Research, that can be a great source. UConn has some fantastic people there and analysts who can really look at data. #appleeduchat
A3: listening to the teachers or students I work with is important. Discussing their goals and anticipated outcomes. Co-planning lessons based off of our assessments to gives students an authentic hands-on learning experience. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Data…interesting word. To many of us that means test scores. Our Ss future jobs do not depend on test scores. The data we should be looking at must be connected to these skills. https://t.co/e3M8A12iZ2#AppleEduChat
A3: Professors that have the best interest at heart for their students, all students from different backgrounds. Those are the ones I seek to guide me in the right direction. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Conversations are the BEST indicator for me. With a short chat, I can usually decide how to move the learning objectives. That’s why I LOVE using @Flipgrid with my students. I can hear the learning, misconceptions, & ways that I need to move forward. #AppleEDUchat
A2 This is difficult - it often depends on who the requests come from. In my position, faculty requests typically take priority. Lately, we’ve been using Toggl to track our time and plan projects https://t.co/cNlzroTGBQ#AppleEDUchat
Then it is much like the tree in the forest. It may make waves, but if there are no ears . . there is no vibration . . there is no resonance and thus . . is it truly sounding? #appleeduchat
I think it’s important to yes, complete some surveys (perceptual and otherwise) and also collect data that shows change with plottable variables (and controls) Need to have evidence for your claims #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUChat I love https://t.co/WId7YCmEjd in the classroom! Helps students stay on task while using technology and gives me the freedom to move around the classroom as needed!
A3: As a digital coach, I find myself digging through the Everyone Can Create books and many resources published by ADEs to help generate ideas to help my teachers and students! #thankyou#AppleEDUchat
A3:
As a leader of students, the students themselves are the ones that guide me. Behaviorally seeing their growth through positive intervention supports and academically in showing them their successes through immediate assessment feedback @esgisoftware#AppleEDUChat
B3: Our district sends a survey twice a year on paper and digitally. We also dissect district and state testing as well. Lastly, we hold class circles and have conversations with our kiddos to get their input. #AppleEDUchat
A3: We have a big survey through BrightBytes twice a year that learners, educators, and parents complete to give feedback on technology initiatives. Combining these reports with qualitative feedback from educators guides our professional learning focus. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Information comes from so many different places. Business, education, pop culture, politics, etc. Leadership is not stagnant, nor must we be. Adapting and evolving are key. #appleEDUchat
Q3: people and Ss guide me more than test scores and data! Build strong relationships with your Ss and staff and your scores will improve. Model this as a leader and your teachers will do the same! #AppleEDUchat
A3) I'm a big believer in relationships and engagement. If students have a positive relationship with their teacher and their engaged you will get 100% effort out of S's. If there are no relationships or engagement the S's will be absent a lot #appleeduchat
As a future teacher I’m inspired by my classmates everyday. During the teacher walk out here in Oklahoma it would be understandable for students to change their major or decide to teach elsewhere but they are committed to making Oklahoma education better #appleEDUchat
B3) Young adults can create a Clip, talk with me, complete a form, voicemail, leave a note - share their thoughts with me the way they are most comfortable. #AppleEDUChat
As Educator we are always busy, But I have discovred that the use of technology, collaboration, and teamwork in the classrooms can help any teacher to decrease the paperwork. Students doing the class not the teacher 100% talking. #AppleEDUChat
Bonus3: At least one @Qualtrics survey a year, data organized through a spreadsheet then shared by publication (see here for all #ChemE curriculum data for the last decade!) https://t.co/floBygeFUr#AppleEDUchat
Bonus3:
How do you gather the info and data you use to make decisions? Where does it come from, how do you organize it? Help us out. Do you survey? How? Examples? What info is important. Go.
#AppleEDUchat
a2) It’s funny how life just splinters you.. your bandwith is stretched across so many areas- I do my best and I have found an App called @my24me that works really well for organization-especially for my running brain.. #appleeduchat
Listen folks… you do NOT want to miss question 6. Wow! I can’t believe question 6. We will be talking about question 6 for a long time. Grand kids will be asking us about question 6. Stay with me.
#AppleEDUchat
Bonus 3: I gather feedback from students after major projects using blog posting or comments. I always ask them to tell me what they liked/didn’t like and what their suggestions are for improving the lesson. I make adjustments based on their feedback. #AppleEDUChat
This week, my students are sharing videos about a podcast from @SYSKPodcast about Pando. The passion and curiosity in their voices are making my heart so happy! #AppleEDUchat
Students' needs are different today than they were 10 years ago, let alone 5 years or 1 year ago. The precise ways/tools they use to learn are always changing, so while there are many great pedagogical suggestions, if you don't talk to your students, you're screwed! #AppleEDUChat
A3: I’ve started to do quick classroom walkthroughs to get a sense of what’s happening in classrooms, how effective our PD has been, and where we need to focus our attention next. I’m surprised the amount of info I’ve gained from 10 minutes in classrooms. #AppleEDUChat
Q4:
Share something you have learned about leading that you wish you knew when you started? What advice would you give to your younger self?
#AppleEDUchat
Sorry to have to go but so glad to pop in. @kellycroy you are an inspirational leader. Thank you for sharing this conversation- I’ll be sure to read the thread in the days/weeks ahesd☺️ #AppleEduChat
I love the Everyone Can Create Teachers Guide -- I have found SO many things in there for my classroom! Here is the link if anyone hasn't seen it yet! #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/H8mXnTnehH
A3 My colleagues, the Internet (articles), and social media (experts and other trusted colleagues) usually help the most when I’m trying to make a decision. #AppleEDUchat
B3: And actually, @Google Forms - we're a google campus, so we use this a ton for surveys and other data collection - dumps right into a spreadsheet for analysis, etc. #appleeduchat
Exactly. There's something calming & warm about being able to say to a kid, "Hey, I get it. I struggle with the same stuff. I'm lucky that I have a doc that helped me find just the right meds & i take them daily. And not every is that lucky." #appleeduchat
A3: Since becoming a 1:1 School and having APL specialist provide training, this has really guided me in my work of incorporating EdTech leadership and what I enjoy sharing with others. Also, ADEs are always constantly providing me with feedback and resources. #AppleEDUChat
Q3 data w tons of observations & documentation, data doesn’t mean anything if I’m not willing to examine my own teaching practices or effectiveness. #AppleEDUchat
Bonus 3: using surveys to students and staff, assessing through private classes on @Seesaw, but most importantly, having conversations in person. Showing you care by listening. #AppleEDUchat
Excited to roll out a new initiative to encourage teachers to pursue the #Appleteacher recognition and Google Certified Educator certifications. We've scheduled adequate time, planned learning support and a celebration! #GoogleEDU#appleEDUchat#edtech#kisj
A4. Wow - so much. So, so much. I wish I had known it was really all about relationships and making sure people feel heard, even if you can't give them what they want. #appleeduchat
A4: When I started, I quickly learned that leading and bossing are totally different. I totally think leading comes with experiences. Leading is about setting examples for others. #AppleEDUchat
A4: in order for people to try new things you need to be willing to put yourself out there. Sometimes things go well and sometimes they don’t. Showing people you can live with mistakes is gold. #appleeduchat
I believe so. Also
“When the Master governs, people are hardly aware that he exists.
If you don't trust people,
you make them untrustworthy.
The Master doesn't talk, he acts.
When his work is done,
the people say, "Amazing:
we did it, all by ourselves!” Lao-Tzu #AppleEDUChat
A4: I never ask anyone to do something that *I’m* not willing to do. I try to make sure everyone knows that - but not because I actually tell them. #showdonttell#AppleEDUchat
Q4:
Share something you have learned about leading that you wish you knew when you started? What advice would you give to your younger self?
#AppleEDUchat
A4 That the best leaders make TONS of mistakes and own them rather than try to make excuses or pretend they didn't happen; authenticity is the difference between the leaders we trust & the leaders we obey #appleeduchat
Q4:
Share something you have learned about leading that you wish you knew when you started? What advice would you give to your younger self?
#AppleEDUchat
A.4- I wish I knew that not everyone wants to be lead to the same place you want to go or want them to go. As long as you lead in best way you can, the people who can help the cause will follow you and the people who don't follow are meant to stay back.
#AppleEDUchat
A3: The ISTE Standards have been a constant guide along with the #everyonecancreate and #appleteacher resources. Seeing the places where the #ccss emphasize creativity and innovation are goldmines! #AppleEDUchat
Q4:
Share something you have learned about leading that you wish you knew when you started? What advice would you give to your younger self?
#AppleEDUchat
A4: Be prepared to be made fun of, laughed at, ridiculed or even disregarded as “crazy” when you see things that others around you might not! #AppleEDUChat
A.2 I am a true believer in making every moment count and teaching bell to bell. It’s starts with planning and preparation and extends to your classroom management. I prioritize students needs over anything and everything else. #AppleEDUChat
Bonus 1: I learn most from the teachers around me. I am surrounded by positive influences and educators who genuinely care. Taking the time to have meaningful conversations with them has really impacted me! #AppleEDUchat
Definitely owning not so good outcomes and figuring out what to do next from this is critical - this is true leadership. Model this for faculty and students. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I wish that I would have known that being wrong can be just as productive as being right in EDU. I was pretty tough on myself at the beginning and didn’t give myself credit for falling down and getting back up. :) #AppleEDUchat
Q4: Just because I was right... it doesn't mean the other person was wrong. Balancing ideas with leadership is so important in moving everyone forward together. #AppleEDUchat
Bonus3A: I've been super fortunate to have a student web & app designer create an app for the #SICMBC to help us track services & resources accessed by students; perfect for our #makerspace meets #socialwork center; chk him out at https://t.co/GUtiv95txa#appleeduchat
Bonus3:
How do you gather the info and data you use to make decisions? Where does it come from, how do you organize it? Help us out. Do you survey? How? Examples? What info is important. Go.
#AppleEDUchat
A4: don’t get caught up on things being perfect, it’s the reflecting from those non-perfect experiences that really help you to grow as a leader. #AppleEDUChat
Bonus4:
Do you use tools to journal, reflect, and archive, and document your work as a leader? We MUST model the learning we want students to do. Yes? Share.
#AppleEDUchat
A4: I wish I would've known that it is okay to say no and not to have too many commitments. As a new teacher, I said yes to everything and quickly regretted it because I had too much on my plate. #AppleEDUChat
A great leader stands at the front of the line when it hits the fan and at the end of the line patting everyone on the back when success shines on your group! #AppleEDUChat
A4: Share the good, the bad, and the ugly. No one listens to a leader that puts off a facade that they are perfect and everything always goes well. #appleeduchat
A4: I learned that to be a leader, you must also be a follower. You have to be willing to network and follow other leaders to gain new perspectives, while also letting others follow you. #AppleEDUchat
I’ve heard of it…but not quite sure. Hopefully, you get a chance to visit us up here. We have the best roller coasters, estuaries, and fishing! Love my #GreatLakePlace#AppleEDUchat
Bonus 4: I have notes that one day I want to turn into a blog of my educational journey. Just haven’t been brave enough to put it out there #AppleEDUChat
Bonus4:
Do you use tools to journal, reflect, and archive, and document your work as a leader? We MUST model the learning we want students to do. Yes? Share.
#AppleEDUchat
Bonus 3A: I use Google Forms to survey my parents and students when I have an important decision to make. I ask for feedback often and then drive my instruction based on the data. I also formatively assess using technology for quick data. #AppleEDUChat
B4) Tools- I use Evernote and Google Keep as tools that capture activity that i have been inspired by or what ideas i’ve been thinking about. #appleeduchat
Q4: Be sure to take your time when making decisions. Every decision you make has an impact on many other things. Look at the spiral before making quick decisions!#AppleEDUchat
Hi #AppleEDUChat-jumping in late here! A4: I'd tell my younger self you know how Mom & Dad always gracefully said "Let's agree to disagree." That's going to come in pretty handy in some instances! You may be thinking miles ahead of what others are just getting comfortable with.
A4: I wish I would've known that it is okay to say no and not to have too many commitments. As a new teacher, I said yes to everything and quickly regretted it because I had too much on my plate. #AppleEDUChat
Bonus 4: my coaching team and I have student centered coaching slide decks that we collaborate with teachers on. I also make notes in my calendar on lessons or use #Sketchesschool to draw or write PD reflections on. #AppleEDUChat
A4: Leading doesn’t mean that you have the best ideas to transform education. It does mean creating the conditions for a team to generate their best ideas, and empowering them to act. #AppleEDUChat
Bonus 4 A: I think that the reflections we do for our observations in class is very helpful. We had to keep a duo tang folder of reflections for every hour we were in the class. Duo tang folders are easy and great to use. #AppleEDUChat
A4: Oh, so many things. Read more, listen to audiobooks, do everything you can to remember everyone’s name! Most of all, understand the power of the pause. I have to consciously wait to give a response, because I know it will be better once I’ve thought thru it more #AppleEDUchat
A4 There are always a group of people who will refuse to change simply because they’re set in their ways. Don’t waste your time with them - sometimes people have to learn the hard way. #AppleEDUchat
Bonus4:
Do you use tools to journal, reflect, and archive, and document your work as a leader? We MUST model the learning we want students to do. Yes? Share.
#AppleEDUchat
It’s not that I make time for anything I understand how all content is dependent of one another for deeper understanding, therefore I try my best to teach everything as one #AppleEDUchat
Wow! I just read Question 6 again, and the following bonus. It’s even better reading it a second time. You will want to stay around. We need you on this one.
#AppleEDUchat
Bonus4A: That's why I tweet, blog, Facebook, instagram, the things and the stuff. In the words of @austinkleon#showyourwork; I find being open & transparent -- even about the struggles -- lets kids know its okay to fail up #appleeduchat#leanintothesquish
Bonus4:
Do you use tools to journal, reflect, and archive, and document your work as a leader? We MUST model the learning we want students to do. Yes? Share.

#AppleEDUchat
A3 I’ve used @iste standards and I love helping teachers implement them as well. Lately I’ve also used the #EveryoneCanCreate guides & I love showing these to teachers in my #CCSDfam 💙. #AppleEDUChat
Totally agree - leading is not all about the ideas. Rather it is about vision, giving platform for voice, sharing responsibility, recognizing truth and creating an environment of sharing and empowerment #YESand#AppleEDUchat
B4: We use @bulbapp as a district for our tool to reflect on our learning and growth. Which reminds me... I have a lot of updating to do to mine! #AppleEDUChat
Bonus4 #AppleEDUchat My classroom blogs and my sketch notes are the way I document my work. The best way to know what’s happening in my classroom and my personal learning would be to check those things out.
Bonus4:
Do you use tools to journal, reflect, and archive, and document your work as a leader? We MUST model the learning we want students to do. Yes? Share.
#AppleEDUchat
Bonus4: I just started a monthly log/portfolio that includes reflections, (written and audio) work samples, and Goals. Love looking back to see how these goals were reached each month #AppleEDUChat
A4. I have learned that it’s okay to not have all the answers. I have also learned that the best way to lead is to understand that everyone is in different places on their technology journey and we should meet them where they are at to help guide to the next level, #AppleEDUChat
Q4:
Share something you have learned about leading that you wish you knew when you started? What advice would you give to your younger self?
#AppleEDUchat
B4: I have a form that I fill out after meetings, planning sessions, ets that I record notes and take aways. I look back at my responses monthly to summarize and reflect. This has really helped me with next steps and follow through. #AppleEDUChat
A5: @iCoachLindsay, @mrstechfarlin and I really try to work with our admin to encourage past and present Apple Vanguard members to open their doors and share their learning. This year we had them make lightbulbs to hang outside of their door to “share their light” 💡#AppleEDUChat
Q5: Be a "multiplier", not a "diminished". Letting go of "I have to do this" and letting other lead starts the contagious change! Book Link: https://t.co/9zIyuAyRPb#AppleEDUChat
The best way to grow educational leaders is to give them the tools to lead their variety of students effectively. Even if the teacher is not a great leader, they still have the tools to lead their students. Technology is a great tool.
#AppleEDUchat
A5: I truly believe it is based in trusting relationships. Seeking out those relationships with the ones who will change your culture for the good of the community only makes the school stronger. #AppleEDUChat
A5: I think the best way to grow Educational Leaders in our schools is connecting with each other and learning from our colleagues. We strengthen our leaders with technology and staying up to date. #AppleEDUchat
I think we really grow them by supporting them and shouldering with them!! The best leaders I have been able to work side by side with them to encourage and support! It takes a village but we also need to feed the hungry #AppleEDUChat
A5: At the university level, you have to find people who are institutionally invested. I have issues with the transitory administrative class. #appleeduchat
A5 Give them opportunities. Mentoring. Also, in the beginning, have them co-lead smaller initiatives with stronger leaders to get some "on the job training." #AppleEDUchat
Bonus4: I have a blog on a website that I was really good at updating...for like a month. I need to take the time to make it a priority to reflect and blog more. I have learned so much from others and maybe my struggles could help someone else #AppleEDUchat
YES - I have often suggested a colleague present with me or with someone comfortable with speaking to get them started. Collaborating and supporting is a great stepping stone #AppleEDUchat
A5: Empower our teachers to try new things and once they feel ready, share it with others. Bring new teachers into their rooms to observe or give them leadership rolls on campus. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Trusting others to have the keys to the laboratory of learning that we call schools and classrooms. It makes me think of Alan November talking about who owns the learning. Leaders should empower, not enable. #AppleEDUChat
If we want to grow educational leaders, we need a culture within each institution that emphasizes education. It can't just be enthusiasm; there also needs to be accountability to ensure the work is taken seriously, and the leaders can get buy-in from all involved. #AppleEDUChat
A5: Don’t post a musical cast list during an Apple Chat. That said, administrators need to take risks on teachers who want to innovate. APPR/Teacher Rubrics are just standardized test for teachers that demoralize and prevent true leaders from unlocking potential. #AppleEduChat
Q6
How can we improve instruction in our schools district? Can we influence others, or do we just do our own thing? If we do the latter, are we leaders. A lot going on here. Let’s go. Tick-tock. We NEED you.
#AppleEDUchat
A5: Celebrate Successes! Provide opportunities for those with a growth mindset to take on leadership roles and support them to take on the encouraging challenge! #AppleEDUChat
A5: Sometimes awesome colleagues are content to do their awesome thing in their classroom. Tapping in & giving support (like coplanning and presenting at staff PD, or even local conferences) can help them see themselves as leaders outside their classroom. #AppleEDUChat
A5: Highlight your peers strengths - everyone is strong in something. Ask them to facilitate a PD, allow Ts to observe their peers at their site & other schools. You grow when you know & see more from those who do something well! #AppleEDUchat
Bonus5A: Many of our staff take on leadership roles w/n Mt Blue; there aren't any barriers to new staff becoming parts of teams or collaborating w others to make change happen -- barriers to those changes exist for certain, but not bc folks are shunned #appleeduchat
Q4: Realizing that leadership isn’t being in charge; it’s humbling. It is working with others to guide, encourage, and advocate for educators, students, and families. It’s being there for students when they need it it most. It’s giving grace to others and yourself. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Practice what we preach and always be willing to carefully consider all types of criticism whether it be positive or negative. It is also vital to ensure we never remain stagnant. #growthmindset#appleEDUchat
A6 This is where it is super important to share what we are doing, embrace the non believers and try to meet them where they are at, open eyes, inspire learning, support everyone, develop amazing students! #AppleEDUchat
I think leaders take on a lot of pressure sometimes. In the Oklahoma City school district in a school called Cesar Chavez, the kids practice meditation. This, I think, is important for leaders to have as a tool to stay grounded and okay. #AppleEDUChat
A6: I think there is a time for both. To improve my instruction, sometimes, I have to do my own thing, work with my students & perfect the method. Then, others…reach out, share, & gather ideas is the way to go. Leading differently at different times. #AppleEDUchat
A6: to me it is a productive chaos. I want to see hands-on learning, discussions and trial and error. Seeing students smile when frustrated and learning from their mistakes to share with others makes my heart 😃#AppleEDUChat
B5: point out the great things your teachers do! Give them credit for it and encourage them to share what they do with others. Allow them to make decisions and lead groups without criticism. Encourage and support outside the box ideas!#AppleEDUchat
A7 - Sit down with teachers and help them create innovative lessons - it doesnt come easy for everyone- walk them through it instead of just expecting them to do it on their own #AppleEDUChat
A6: Culture, Culture, Culture. If the culture emphasizes education as a priority, people rise to the occasion. If there are resources made available for teaching and PD (ed conferences, speakers, etc). If all emphasis is on $$$ and pubs, ed will be low-priority. #appleeduchat
We cannot do our own thing, but we can all come together in our districts to form a "grapevine" so to speak. A central vine or structure that allows for teachers to venture out enough to allow students to grow. Instruction has to be specific but flexible.
#AppleEDUchat
A6: Make Connections. A teachers best resource are other teachers. #FindYourPeople I try to connect teachers often. Share ideas, best practices, and have a sounding board for the bad ideas. #AppleEDUChat
q6) Modeling. Volunteer to offer to work with new teachers especially, offer lunch and learns.. I did a Tech-n-Tenders and got @Raising_Canes to sponsor it. They were an awesome partner-Teachers got Tenders and I brought teachers in to talk about their experiences #appleeduchat
Q5: Making all educators feel welcome to be in leadership roles. Sometimes new teachers don't feel like they have been in the profession long enough to be a leader. Encourage collaboration to strengthen current leaders. #AppleEDUChat
A6) Greater understanding & implementation of personalized learning. Move together with Ss to highlight their voice, choice and creativity! Have Ss share learning to build a culture of learning. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Stay Positive!! Look into the future! Look what students can accomplish, create, innovate! The possibilities are endless! Showcase these outcomes and keep leaders inspired!! #AppleEDUChat
A6: Great instruction is when the content the students produce has value, reaching outside of the classroom and creating pathways to meaningful interactions. #AppleEduChat
A6: Practice what we preach and always be willing to carefully consider all types of criticism whether it be positive or negative. It is also vital to ensure we never remain stagnant. #growthmindset#appleEDUchat
One of my former colleagues helped get me started with making presentations, and I’ve helped others since. Starting something like this on your own is not easy. #AppleEDUchat
Bonus: Celebrate Tt accomplishments no matter how small. All leaders want change but they do so little to support those who are at the forefront of change, this is how you create and encourage new leaders #AppleEDUchat
A6: Make Connections. A teachers best resource are other teachers. #FindYourPeople I try to connect teachers often. Share ideas, best practices, and have a sounding board for the bad ideas. #AppleEDUChat
A6: This requires learning from each other and from our students. Also, continuously researching what works best. I think good instruction changes based on your students needs. #AppleEDUChat
A6: As a preservice teacher, the teacher I observed in Okc showed me that building relationships with students is number one to understanding what they need and being a positive leader to them. Understanding and empathetic listening! #AppleEDUChat
A5: Ot starts with relationships. Find out what they are interested in (both personally and professionally) and make a connection. Gain trust, build relationships, and help them develop confidence in their great abilities. #AppleEDUchat
A6: I think districts need to gain feedback from all people in the trenches daily. They are the ones who know their kids and the schools needs. Also setting that bar high and modeling it for others. Everyone has to be on board and a willing participant! #AppleEDUchat
Oh my gosh. That’s my daily life. I move beyond it with a firm belief that what I do is meant to move people forward. You may not like me but I’ll make you think. That’s my goal. #appleeduchat
Bonus 6: I love seeing when a teacher is willing to take a risk to try something new that is important to them and their students. I also love seeing students take the lead to not just teach their peers, but adults! #AppleEDUChat
Bonus6A: Our dean. He has worked hard to make teaching faculty a welcome and important part of the culture and community, not just adjunct faculty that no one cares about. #appleeduchat
A6: This makes me think of discussions I’ve had with @SamJKNeal about Jim Knight’s partnership principles. In particular, praxis and reciprocity. We must trust that others can improve instruction and we can all learn from each other. #AppleEDUChat
Q6: Changing PD for our T’s we need to spark the interest just like our students. No more sit and get. Strategies and skill we can apply right away. Take a risk break the mold. I will push into as many classrooms as I can to help that risk happen #AppleEDUChat
Q6

A5: Sometimes awesome colleagues are content to do their awesome thing in their classroom. Tapping in & giving support (like coplanning and presenting at staff PD, or even local conferences) can help them see themselves as leaders outside their classroom. #AppleEDUChat
A6: Building a strong foundation of WHAT and WHEN we should teach with enough flexibility for teachers to be responsive to meet Ss where they are. Plus strong scaffolds for getting Ss where they need to be. #AppleEDUChat
WOWZA - what a gathering of amazing #eduleaders! Keep it going but want to give a HUGE shout out to @KellyCroy for leading the leaders through this dynamic and awesome #AppleEDUchat You rocked the house, my friend
That’s all folks!
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day and week to be a part of #AppleEDUchat and thanks for being leaders.
Join use each week on Tuesday for #AppleEDUchat
You are awesome!
A6: Practice what we preach. As a coach, I don’t have my own classroom. So I infuse tools that I would want my teachers to use into PD opportunities. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Focus more on Ss health & happiness in their learning process. We are not factories of cookie cutters w/cookie curriculum. Fit more of Ss voice & choice into lessons & assessments. #AppleEDUChat
Thanks @kellycroy for a great Chat! Special Shout to all of those pre-service teachers involved. Keep chatting and getting these experiences with us! #AppleEDUChat
A6 There’s nothing wrong with trying something new as long as those involved understand what’s going on. Getting buy-in first is usually a critical step in the process. #AppleEDUchat
It's been my experiences thus far .. and it isn't until you get some distance from the leaders you don't trust that you realize it sometimes.. #likedecadessometimes#appleeduchat
The best leader was @Ajay460 she encouraged all Ss and Ts to be creators of their own knowledge and embraced coding as a second language for all of her 600+ Ss #AppleEDUchat
