Greetings! My name is Emma, a pre-service chemistry teacher from Grove City College! Looking forward to getting ideas about flipping a classroom. #flipclass
In Massachusetts this is "green fuzz" week: many trees have little leaf buds so they look like a haze of green. Gorgeous!
Oh yeah, I'm Andrew (gr.8 SocSt., 5th year of #flipclass)
Hi #flipclass! Katie from Allen TX. currently flipping college physics w/7+ yrs of HS physics and PD flip-style. We are greening up. Great patio days! #flipclass chat
Hi my name is Rachel and I am a preservice special ed teacher from Grove City College in PA. I have never personally taught in a flipped classroom but have experienced some #flipclass

@lanier_katiesue@flipping_A_tchr I had a bad experience in a highschool chemistry class but have experienced some good ones in college that are just a day, excited to learn more about how to implement a good one! #flipclass

Joy in Toronto, been flipping some HS sci since 2013, it’s definitely not green here but at least it’s finally no longer white :)! #flipclass#flipclasschat
Sounds like we have some pre-service with us and that is AWESOME! feel free to answer in the Q1 A1 format as we go but feel free to ask anything you want as we have some experienced flippers on board tonight. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: About 80% done w/ school year. Still scratching surface. Got most of short-term goals done but now looking at making more elaborate flipped presentations. #flipclass#flipclasschat
welcome we just posted Q1 so feel free to give an A1 but if you are pre-service dont be shy to ask anything you want regardless we are here to share #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 1st college semester nearly done, 25% left. 1st goal - keep Ss engaged, 2nd goal help Ss learn physics - both good, could be better. Active college physics class - YEP! Better activities next #flipclass
A1 I’ve reeeeeally struggled this year. Year about 80% done, #flipclass goals maybe...15%? To be fair, I accomplished some awesome things that weren’t on my original to-do list - never imagined in my life that I’d host a webinar with Jonathan Bergmann! #flipclasschat
Is it a reasonable goal to do the whole class flipped or are there times where you need to incorporate face-to-face instruction? #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: I would love to make the content that needs to be direct instruction purely flipped to leave time for hands on activities and questions from students #flipclass#flipclasschat
Great question. flipped learning and direct instruction are not mutually exclusive. In fact most flipped classrooms are a mix in every step on the spectrum. I am very flipped but there are still times where a good lecture/story is the best method #flipclass#flipclasschat

I still have several lessons that are done more traditionally. I do a lot of demos (primarily with microeconomic concepts) that are a bit more hands on and require face-to-face. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 - 1. Great list of learning goals for each unit, with vids (and assessments) specifically geared to each; 2. Lightboard built and regularly in use. That’s enough sad sharing for now heh #flipclass#flipclasschat
additionally even when storytime, lecture, Direct instruction, etc is the plan flipped can provide introduction or supplement for Ss #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 -- I share Joy's #1. My state's 8th grade curriculum is about to change with new frameworks in June ... so guess what I'm doing this summer???

I find it helpful to “start where you are, use what you have, do what you can,” or whatever the Arthur Ashe(?) quote is, so while I’m still working at getting to a point of doing a full flip I think it’s ok to do part and part. #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclasschat#flipclass A2: Big classes, really wanted to connect with all my students more personally. Still some with some walls to knock down and hopeful progress with this goal will continue. Love talking "with" my kids and not "at" them.
A3: I still have the tendency (habit?) of going over stuff in class, sometimes too much. I need to put my foot down (for myself) & trust that Ss can and will do their share without me. #flipclass
A3 This second child of mine is WAY more needy than Firstborn was. I made my first flipped videos when Firstborn was the age Wild Child is now. I can’t seem to get the workflow happening. #flipclass#flipclasschat#usethehashtag
it is possible, but the best way to enter any building/district is with a clear plan and good communication with admin. Rome was not built in a day and our classrooms aren't either #flipclass is a journey #flipclasschat
Technically yes.
@flippingwithjoy and I just did a FLGI webinar last week about how to "flip alone"
Some participants had hostile admins, perhaps at least partly because they don't understand #flipclass
Dunno. My district is progressive & my P and APs give me a lot of leeway (pretty much free reigns) for my elective. Kinda unique because I'm the only #anatomy T.
Do you have to ask permission? #flipclass
#flipclasschat#flipclass A3: had a shirt as a kid that said something like, "I've never lost. I've only been behind when time ran out." Time running out only on this school yr. Honestly, classes taught change almost yearly, tough to demand perfection. Will reach goals eventually
That is SO DIFFICULT; switching-up courses/schedules/levels every year is so much work and puts so much strain on us. Pretty much impossible to #flipclass with multiple preps.
We also mentioned that it may help to 1. Be proactive by touching base with admin about your rationale at the start, and 2. Know what research is out there to support how *current* #flipclass methods support student achievement — make sure admin knows it’s not just videos-as-HW
@MrLamm is right again!
The last few weeks of 8th grade is unlike everything before (state tests, class trip in late-May, "graduation", etc.)
Business as usual won't work.
I ride the flow the best I can.
Already dreaming/planning ahead to 2018-19

After 18 year I am penciled in to teach an algebra 2 class. I have not done algebra 2 but have done everything else. what I find is that once the flip library is built then materials can move from course to course to some degree #flipclass#flipclasschat

A3b (4 class days left) trying a couple different grouping sizes and methods to see if there's a good way to get everyone a voice in the discussions. #flipclass
A3b: As time winds-down and we run out of time to accomplish what we want to accomplish, I think I can convey a increased sense of urgency for Ss to complete work on their own & not be as dependent on me. That's actually how I started to #flipclass; out of necessity.
Yes, this! I started teaching full time in Feb 2008 and I have taught sooooo many different courses, in math and science, never getting expert at any of it, grrr. Can’t reuse videos if the courses are always new, so always investing more vid-making time #flipclass#flipclasschat

A3b Try to do a good-enough goals list supported by at least some vids for at least one course for the last unit. Plan far enough ahead for that so I can have plenty of lead time to create what’s needed. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Gotcha. Well, #flipclass has been transformational for me (& my Ss) in that we now utilize the groups space (f2f) MUCH more efficaciously by doing case studies, more in depth dissections & critical thought. Low level stuff mostly #flipclass into Ss hands.
A4: Many of my Ss indicated they were interested in clinical medicine to some degree be it RN, MD, OT, AT, AT, vet med, etc. #flipclass has enabled us to dig much more deeply into patient assessment & clinical decision-making. Will give them a HUGE advantage in HE.
A4 like @flipping_A_tchr I forgot to ask, so I'll guess - learn some physics, get a grade that will transfer to 4yr univ. All possible. Sit in lecture, take notes, turn in HW, breath in and out - nope, not my class! #flipclass
The dirty secret of flipped learning is that it requires constant and continuous reflection and self evaluation. it is both exhausting and invigorating #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4: we were just recently talking about Danielsons framework and reflection in one of my classes! It is such an important thing, especially with a flipped class setting #flipclasschat

I must confess @flipping_A_tchr caught me. this is anarea that in need to grow in. there are many teachers that do actually develop class rules and goals at the beginning of the year and find it builds buy-in #flipclass#flipclasschat
I do ask them about their goals via a survey at the beginning of the semester, but Ss usually think that means giving me a number :P. I should push them to think about more meaningful goals *sheepish* #flipclass#flipclasschat
Au contraire. That's why we are all here #flipclass every week. Well, I try to make it 1 or 2 Mondays a month. Any time. Best we to contact me is through Twitter.
Goal-setting is a discrete skill, which would require precious August/September time to teach it well.
Maybe that is a better plan for mid-year, with some time in "the rearview mirror" and more time ahead
#flipclass#flipclasschat
You can always ask what teaching technique (actually spelled teachniques, new #flipclass word for the day!) are being used by teachers on the campus, blended learning, flipped learning, stations,...tons to choose from.
A5 I have been waiting all day for this question! I have a new T in my dept and he has decided to flip and so we are going to spend some time recording the journey together this summer #flipclass#flipclasschat#cantwait

#flipclasschat#flipclass A5: want to learn some better presentation tools to use for "better" presentations. Also want to try to do more interaction within lessons if possible. Nearpod?
Q5 Since the goal is do a better job, I think I just ask the Ss to fill out a quick survey (official surveys aren't going to ask what I really need to know and won't be available until late Fall. ) #flipclass
A5: Re-making micro videos, especially narrated sketches. We went 1:1 this year with touch screen laptops - using OneNote has been transformative. Need to reshoot vids w/ new mic for better quality. And include my face (picture-in-picture) in ALL vids. #flipclass
Yes in fact one of my concerns is that our vlog/radio whatever doesn't end up sounding like a deadpool movie...classroom vocabulary....classroom vocabulary... #flipclass#flipclasschat
Not sure whether this would be helpful, but here's a GoogleForm survey you could copy & revise:

I have used a similar tool near the end of the school year since 2015

If you’re referring to my asking them to think more meaningfully about their goals, yeah, I meant I want to do that at the start of next semester with my new Ss...too late maybe for these ones. I can work on *curriculum* goals for this last unit tho #flipclass#flipclasschat
Okay so there is no exit ticket tonight except to remind you that there is an awesome flipped learning conference in Philly this summer with @collsphysistry and @chemicalsams as well as a great one in Chicago #ILfabCon in June #flipclass#flipclasschat
