#ONedchat Archive
The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.

Debby!!! Happy Wednesday- so glad you could be here for
Diverse possibilities and building on each others' learning experiences.
A1: Together, generate a broad definition of creativity-people don't have be great at art to be creative- creativity in all areas!
A1: stop prescribing outcomes for every assignment. Give Ss choice and freedom to explore
A1 Been looking a lot at innovating to make a difference! Had a M.A.D Fair! Empowering Ss:) https://t.co/sRo7TOcqL5
Hey! Shelly from Toronto; coming in a bit late.
is now trending in Canada, ranking 46
A1: I think spending time to create a classroom community that genuinely welcomes risk taking is key.
Sarah from London, TOSA - SWS FNMI. A1: Help Ss find their passion & then encourage them to use it https://t.co/HOooG9XJ5p
Agree giving them time to explore through learning experiences.
Shelley, you are not late for an important date- you are right on time
A1: Ts need to Lt go of the control & let Ss experiment & play w/ ideas, resources, & manipulatives.
A1: Model and insist on respect for all learners and their ideas. Our ideas flow when we feel free and safe.
A1: Encourage Ss to question/wonder. Collaboration often sparks creativity as well. Allow Ss to showcase learning in diverse ways.
A1: allow students to choose their topic within topic and choose how they will demonstrate their learning
A1: have to create that culture in Sept; community circles twice a week; give Ss a voice in how they want to learn.
Open ended assignments or choice boards to give Ss a say in their learning https://t.co/NbLLIpKUFE
A1: Suspending your expectations of what a task will look like or what students might come up with-they will always surprise you
. YES! We can limit student creativity when we are too prescriptive w expectations and exemplars!
It's amazing how providing a safe space can help foster risk-taking in students
Creativity in all areas a skill
Hi Teri! Thanks for joining us tonight!
A1: I show my Ss the curriculum & ask "how do you want to learn this?" - give them a voice. Each might choose something different.
How we assess plays such an important role!
A1: create safety, value perspectives, listen to everyone, learn to disagree not be disagreeable
. I agree. I don't like a narrow definition of creativity that results in ppl saying, "I'm not creative"
Yes - create a CULTURE of creativity
A1: need an open flexible & fluid curriculum; what are the 'life' big ideas? What open essential Qs can drive their learning?
A1 - Sometimes the rubric, if too prescriptive, can be a creativity killer. Provide a wide range of possibilities, examples.
. Totally! I find it heartbreaking when Ss are paralyzed by freedom bc we've gotten them used to ticking off boxes
A1: Encouraging student voice. Ss direct the learning and have a say in how classroom is designed.
A1: for creativity need flexible learning spaces; tables & chairs on wheels, bean bag chairs, couches, variety of reading material
A1: change up learning space and place to inspire creativity and learning-
A1: Points of Possibility: guide them based on interests, TALK TO YOUR Ss..rid of your desk; co-learn; dream & create!
. Absolutely! I appreciate that you pointed out that it takes TIME to create a great classroom culture.
Not a fan of rubrics :) https://t.co/t2716pIFpJ
A1 - Sometimes the rubric, if too prescriptive, can be a creativity killer. Provide a wide range of possibilities, examples.
Rubrics can be so limiting when focused on content rather than process!
Thanks for joining us, Sarah! How do YOU help Ss find their passion?
A1- A community of ss respecting creativity together and co-learning through feedback together.
It is also a wonderful tribute. Kind of makes you want to sing.
A2: Passion projects, choice boards; Ss created success criteria; create opps for self & peer reflections
. I try my best to help my Ss (and their Ps) focus on the PROCESS of learning, not the product
I signed up for Twitter at his concert ;)
A2: I give them copies of the curriculum; we dissect it together making real world connections based on THEIR interests.
A1: Student Choice-powerful. Allow Ss to choose topics of interest when writing. Listening to music allows for creativity too!
. Part of the paradox of "letting go of control" is how much work Ts do in the background of a creative clsrm
which will lead to a community of creative risk takers.
Get to know them as people & as learners. Then give them with opps to show skills & experience success https://t.co/HFJPfk1hAX
Thanks for joining us, Sarah! How do YOU help Ss find their passion?
. "Wonder" is a perfect word for what we need to build in learners!
However, they CAN be used well to scaffold outcomes without prescribing methodology
Student interest is huge. Some don't know what it is yet, help them wonder, b curious & then investigate. https://t.co/6HckvGaGXC
Sarah from London, TOSA - SWS FNMI. A1: Help Ss find their passion & then encourage them to use it https://t.co/HOooG9XJ5p
A2. Present students with a question/problem and have them chose the means in which they go about deconstructing it
A2: open curriculum; give them choice; love choice boards. Give them a big idea & let them generate their own Qs.
Great! How do you do that, Penny? Do you have Ss go through the curriculum on their own?
A2 PBL has increased student ownership. They develop their driving question and collaborate toward their goal.
What are the expectations in your Community Circles?
- I AM SO excited to see you join this chat Debby! You are such a gem of an educator!
A2: Student directed inquiry. Encourage risk-taking, emphasize the power of good question making.
A2: to give control, focus on learning; give descriptive FB & not grades.
- curious, how do you promote student voice in your room? An area of interest of mind big time.
A2: be a facilitator in the classroom...Encourage Ss to guide their own learning through inquiry & self-directed learning.
They can be helpful, but too often do not work well for assessing more complex thinking/writing.
. Yes! And, tell them that they will DEFINITELY come up with better ideas - expect them to!
That inform next steps as opposed to grades? How do you encourage T's to do that and Ss to accept that?
Listen respectfully, make eye contact, ask Qs, right to pass, make suggestions https://t.co/3tep0Q9ih0
What are the expectations in your Community Circles?
Love this answer! https://t.co/JG2KYAE8B8
A2: be a facilitator in the classroom...Encourage Ss to guide their own learning through inquiry & self-directed learning.
A2- Allowing Ss time to explore through thinking tensions for problem solvings.
So many great A1s, many of the participants even answered Q2 already!
Who moderates the circles? You or students?
YES! Put curriculum in hands of students. Have them develop inquires based on it. https://t.co/9Al11SAkn4 https://t.co/cqtuwN8bIJ
A2: I give them copies of the curriculum; we dissect it together making real world connections based on THEIR interests.
"thinking tensions" is an interesting idea. Can you explain more?
Can you share how you use choice boards?
Yes! Focus on Assessment For Learning; Ss focus too much on grade & throw away work; let's focus on skills https://t.co/N9fTdd3KI1
That inform next steps as opposed to grades? How do you encourage T's to do that and Ss to accept that?
Encouraging inquiry sparks creativity in students. This promotes them to look for multiple solutions. https://t.co/DfjcIoDOKc
A1: Encourage Ss to question/wonder. Collaboration often sparks creativity as well. Allow Ss to showcase learning in diverse ways.
Smtms the questions r more valuable than the answers.Creating good/rich/deep questions is a learned skill https://t.co/4jV5xY7KYz
A2: Student directed inquiry. Encourage risk-taking, emphasize the power of good question making.
It is so interesting when you ask them what they like and the response is "I don't know" https://t.co/GeO73vT3Lt
Student interest is huge. Some don't know what it is yet, help them wonder, b curious & then investigate. https://t.co/6HckvGaGXC
Sarah from London, TOSA - SWS FNMI. A1: Help Ss find their passion & then encourage them to use it https://t.co/HOooG9XJ5p
my grade 8 class starts our day in a group meeting every day. lots to talk about! We're a school family!
A2: Clsrm goal we always have: "class that runs itself" - Ss know the routines, manage their time, keep themselves/others on track
Being a community makes a big difference
Ss creativity flourish when there are opposing ideas Ss persevere for problem solving.
- 1/2: so true. Ego check at the door; brain open to possibility of what does not yet even exist.
A2 LOVE for student choice! BUT, first they need some direction. A Genius Journal works great! https://t.co/gpbddMjB4i
Yes! Much as we'd prefer them all to jump in every time, know them & we can help some of them get going. https://t.co/nwQwA6CBxW
Get to know them as people & as learners. Then give them with opps to show skills & experience success https://t.co/HFJPfk1hAX
Thanks for joining us, Sarah! How do YOU help Ss find their passion?
I do but Ss can express their concerns via our Family box or in circle itself. We have sentence frames. https://t.co/qjTL6wVBZw
Who moderates the circles? You or students?
shared expectations, use we, creates a community
A journal for reflective learning and next steps.
These are all skills that will serve your Ss so well in the future!
2/2:when we KNOW the curriculum (since we must) then creativity can come easily w/ Ss in mind
A2: Lots of time for talk helps students to find their connections to the learning.
Yes, I like to provide experiences and help them decide/ discover what they want to learn more about.
Ss have options for sharing learning: blogs, videos, skits, write a song, oral presentation, etc Ss choose https://t.co/MLG2jInahl
Can you share how you use choice boards?
Awww thank you, Alison. The feeling is mutual!!!
. I refer to the teacher's role as "Collaborative Curator" - help Ss build their ideas and find resources/tools
and modeling risk taking as the T is so impt. Not knowing & learning alongside Ss is a hard change for Ts.
circles create that sense of my voice matters, encourages listening, and is a lot of fun
That's the teacher's best "backstage" secret - a student-led class takes a lot of support!
- Love that. Daily check-ins/check-outs make such a difference. would approve I think :)
A3: Taking risks as a student T can be daunting!
TIME is so key! We can forget that everyone processes at diff speeds. Silence is sometimes a great thing!
Just being a student teacher can be about all the risk taking a person can handle in a given time.
and in a class of 30, look at all the support possible
Reflection allows learning. For Sure.
A3: taking risks is related to ; has to be culture; have Ss do activities & games around this.
Creating a "connected" classroom where Ss connect with themselves & peers SOOO important!
I'm 4 min behind, but catching up! Can't wait to help problem solve in Q3!
What do you mean by that?
And connect with the school, community, families and the world!
A2: Ss enjoy being asked HOW they can creatively showcase what they've learned. Ss enjoy the opportunity!
true, engage them in the discussion, we did posters this year
one step at a time, but I'm always up for a challenge :D
A3: Despite a strong student led community, many still doubt their unique potential: it will come though!
I wonder if that is the same for 3 yr olds. Or do yrs of prescriptive education train their passions out of them?
Love this Mindset!! Brilliant. https://t.co/kCt7kWRW4g
. I refer to the teacher's role as "Collaborative Curator" - help Ss build their ideas and find resources/tools
It can be. Having a trusted thought partner fosters risk taking.
Do you limit the length of time spent in meeting?
Ex. I have Ss draw pic of animal that represents math at start & end of year; difference is amazing! https://t.co/o9b5npMf2Z
What do you mean by that?
Do you mean for students and/or teachers?
- I usually dedicate a full period since it is done Monday/Friday's due to rotation. Communication key!
Definitely! Luckily there are many amazing mentors out there.
Q4: How are you unique? What "magic" do you have that you would want to share with others/ teach the world? https://t.co/2uX1MYnYSh
We need to teach Ss about the brain. Have them complete tasks related to that. Come up w/ a slogan. https://t.co/o9b5npMf2Z
What do you mean by that?
love this idea, its that community time :)
share news, set the agenda, find out who needs support
There is so much going on in Ontario and being shared in tonight! Great group of passionate educators!
A3: Create opportunities to build on student strengths.
For sure! Developing students as leaders is awesome, they move at different paces and have unique strengths.
Feedback is important for sure and can drive reflection/growth... but self reflection must also be taught https://t.co/cZYVHfJyuU
There is so much great research out there to support you. T's need to learn about it , too.
Absolutely! But so urgent and so worthwhile! Every week, take a baby step. Success=learning; failure=learning!
Yup! I use quite a bit of tech/social mess to connect globally https://t.co/XRWEcIxmg3
And connect with the school, community, families and the world!
1/2 I am not sure. My own children can tell you all kinds of things they are passionate about. Some Ss not as readily
would love to connect to share ideas around circles and class mtgs
Is "social mess" a typo or an awesome new way of referring to SM?
School does that to so many...survive while others thrive...Always look for spaces of possibility!
we usually chat for the 1st 15 min before a.m. announcements. Kids get comfy on the beanbag chairs
2/2 maybe it is partially access to experiences outside of school. Exposure to rich learning in many places
Yes they do! I have a plan 😉 https://t.co/91vhL8TsML
There is so much great research out there to support you. T's need to learn about it , too.
There already seems to be so much magic out there in your classrooms. Can't wait to read your answers to Q4
Lol I meant social media 😂😂😂 https://t.co/u0byTF0i3L
Is "social mess" a typo or an awesome new way of referring to SM?
Imagine if school exposed Ss to rich learning?! We have them for 14 yrs - we need to do better!
I teach both iOS app dev and hermeneutics. I love to teach in the space in between two seemingly unrelated worlds.
Absolutey! We must model self reflection and metacognition!
Can you share it yet, or is it still in the works?
Sometimes it does feel like a social mess, no?
I agree, definitely embracing the !
So true. We often focus on collaboration without giving thinking and processing time. Need both https://t.co/ucXEJO1vs6
TIME is so key! We can forget that everyone processes at diff speeds. Silence is sometimes a great thing!
- bring into this for approach. :) Circle/Community/Check-in time is a must.
The mindset of "Yet". I can't do that - yet. We aren't there - yet!
A4: I have been told I am "magic" with those hard to love kids. I can always find a way in.
https://t.co/1VWQqa96VJ
Q4: How are you unique? What "magic" do you have that you would want to share with others/ teach the world? https://t.co/2uX1MYnYSh
Still in works; you will know when it's ready to go ;) https://t.co/chCorAzX27
Can you share it yet, or is it still in the works?
agreed! build relationships but circle /check in helps maintain them
A4: I nurture Ss, in and out of class, to find themselves and celebrate who they are. It actually feels amazing to write that!
If you're having trouble answering Q4 - check out this method for finding your life's purpose: https://t.co/8QLgSQrwzF
A4: I'm ok with giving up "control". Students can do amazing things if we let let.
It is a process for Ts just as much as it it for Ss. We can model and learn as we go.
. 's Mind Up program is TERRIFIC help in teaching Ss about the brain!
It can be very challenging for many teachers to do that- making it that much more magical from you
A4: I have been given Ss who were hard to reach or needed someone who would understand & take time to get to know them.
A4: I'm ok with giving up "control". Students can do amazing things if we let them.
I love when a Twitter chat serves as an !
A4: I am RIDICULOUSLY hyper active and dance/sing with no warning in almost any situation - I show my Ss life IS FUN!
Agreed! Learning should be fun, engaging and relevant to all our students. https://t.co/5Bd9uZoXK6
Imagine if school exposed Ss to rich learning?! We have them for 14 yrs - we need to do better!
A4: Letting Ss know we are a "Family of learners" allows for an impressive classroom culture.
A4- of Ss feeling confident, finding learning as thinking. Ss being proud of every step of their learning journey.
. In , I share some exercises to help creativity with time limits and without
. They are so lucky to have you. How might you help other Ts do the same?
Hey - declare your loud and proud! Share your Q4 answers! Don't be modest!
Yes but I actually have a background in so it's a little easier for me 😜 https://t.co/uzny9hOEtN
. 's Mind Up program is TERRIFIC help in teaching Ss about the brain!
Even experienced Ts can use thought partners. Luv that term, have used learning partner too.
understanding how the triune brain allows and blocks effective learning
Question 5 coming up in 2 minutes
a$: the magic is watching students listen, build on ideas, disagree, has out details, collaborate= being a community
We forget to celebrate the things we do well. We call it humility or modesty but we need to own our !
Q5: It's important to remember the good stuff. Share a magical moment/memorable story from the yr so far https://t.co/Di709gnSiI
A4 Empowering students to own their learning and develop a growth mindset.
A4.2: Slightly more serious note: my ego is checked at the door - co-learn all the way and question everything so my Ss will too.
Incredible! Not everyone can do that. How might you encourage others to do that as well?
A4: No magic here. But I have high expectations for Ss & I think that they end up doing hard things in my class.
A4: I make learning fun. I can connect with Ss and bring out the best in them. They work for me. I love them.
True and allow Ss to become their true selves, create the vibe
A4: I love sports & watch it all so it makes it easier to reach the boys (not that girls aren't into sports)
And I bet they're learning from you that LEARNING is fun!
A5 Oh! BIG question! I think I'm most passionate about teaching kids THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Sometimes the best thing we can do is just GET. OUT. OF. THE. WAY!
A4: I do a lot of learning using concepts of sports so it really engages my boys.
Magic comes from teaching grit and working through the hard stuff as much as from fairy dust
I keep doing what I do and hope that other Ts join in. I talk to S like they are people too. No judgements https://t.co/C5QCtp6MCz
. They are so lucky to have you. How might you help other Ts do the same?
So many incredible, accessible thought partners right here on Twitter!
A5:My Ss throwing back learning in my face to create more learning opportunities for themselves that are fun. They are now jedi's.
Sounds like fun learning.
Question 6 is not too far far away.

OR... GET. OUT. OF. THE. CLASSROOM!!!!!!! https://t.co/0LJASwA4So
Sometimes the best thing we can do is just GET. OUT. OF. THE. WAY!
A5- Magical moments when Ss create and own their learning.
I find students do better when I expect better of them. Give them something to strive for
It is simple; talk TO them not AT them. Ask them about their w/e; talk about pop culture; listen to them! https://t.co/O2NahlYmZR
It seems so simple, right? But so many don't do it!
I disagree. That in itself is MAGIC. You are amazing! Teachers create magic every day!
Have used MindUp too and would highly recommend the program. https://t.co/bqMOwiQIqj

have yet to try Voxer, still getting used to Twitter. But on my list.
A5: Listening to my ELL student present his Precious Cargo with heartfelt gratitude for leaving Hungary and moving to Canada

That IS . Did he come back and share with his classmates?
Quite often we need to get out of the way. If we keep control we also limit the potential.
A5: I recommend that Ts start a folder/document that tracks your "I Remember" moments! Look back on tough days
A6: Terry . I have enjoyed collaborating with her and connecting our Ss. Brought a new element to the class.
