#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

A1 teach it is just a game. It is about the journey, not who actually wins
We'll follow the traditional Q1/A1 for answers.
Well online games require digital citizenship - everything from discourse to avoiding scams, especially MMOs
Games can show the positive interactions that can occur online, focus on the positive to drown out the neg
Q1: In sports we teach good sportsmanship. How can gaming in education teach good digital citizenship?
no for me this year :( but I am going to 4 days of
A1 I question the use of “digital” citizenship. Citizenship is citizenship.
A1 online games can teach respectful interactions online. If Ss create, it fosters creativity.
A1 To learn , have fun and maybe make a new friend are what I tell Ss.
A1 Ss need to know how to interact with one another if they are online or not.
why don't we do one night ? = F1 and answers = K1
Hi Everyone. This is my first chat with this group. My name is Dawn. I teach K-5th grade science in Indy. My Fav board game-Clue
Elementary Education & ESL major at the University of Nebraska Omaha . . . Chess is probably my fave
A1: Ss are quick to declare winners/losers. I teach them to treat each other with respect and that the journey is more important.
Whether in person (playing a game) or online we still need to teach etiquette.
A1 it creates a safe environment to fail
This is incredibly important to setting the right environment! https://t.co/BF5tO669vI
A1 it creates a safe environment to fail
So glad to have you, Dawn!!
I LOVE this.... what better way is there to learn?
A1 Being kind and actively making the choice to not hurt others in real life situations transfers to online sit.
Hey Colin! Love seeing all the Nebraskans here tonight for & !
I actually never watched Friends
A1 games of any kind can teach the confidence gained through improvement. I see that with my chess club.
YES to this answer. Getting Ss to equate real life behavior to online behavior! https://t.co/jvKqaRM4dj
A1 Being kind and actively making the choice to not hurt others in real life situations transfers to online sit.
Q2: Give an example of how you've gamified your classroom
Shout out to who is killing it with the Giphys this evening. Thanks for Gamifying our chat!
A2 Ss love to play and create Kahoot. This year I am adding in quizlet.
A2 we have a dance off. What else would we do?
A2: I tried gamifying my class this spring by having a leader board, giving kids badges for wanted behaviors and assignments
I started using Classcraft with my 6th graders.
A2: Love to integrate games whenever I can! Also use & encourage teamwork & collaboration
A2: I tend to not use gamification with my Ss, but I use many game mechanics in the ARGs I create
Each assignment or behavior had points assigned to it. Some kids loved it, others could care a less
A2 I made a leader board for course. Learned last week in to hit all four gamer styles.
A2 Sadly - limited tech - I added Prodigy. The Ss loved it and actually helped one another -
And did they love it?? It kills me to watch 17- and 18yo boys loving their pets in my class!
A2 Create your own Lego superhero - but u know this
I love the idea of integrating multiple subjects into
A2: I am currently working on how I'm going to gamify things this year. I teach kindergarten.
LOVE Hate loosing...yep, I have issues :)
A2 Love to gamify science and social studies contents. Each unit is a different game.
My students and my parents were in love with it! What a fabulous way to get kids to WANT to test.

Please share your science ideas with me as I don't know how bring gaming into Elem Science class
A2: Provide the opportunity for Ss to gamify the class - they are way more creative!
A2: they didn't like "team mode" overall worth Kahoot, preferred "making up names" in Kahoot not real names
Love seeing gaming happen even in low-tech rooms! Hi tech, low tech--games can work! https://t.co/6S0OdhHDXv
A2 Sadly - limited tech - I added Prodigy. The Ss loved it and actually helped one another -
lol let me know if you figure it out
A2 I also have a unit where kids create their own board games.
So in love with the racing games idea for data collection!
A2: It can be as simple as creating a sense of competition in my adv. ELA class. Who can outwrite who? https://t.co/PLmVl8rfFj
Yes - irks me when "games" are assumed to be digital esp in
Hey friends! Ever curious about the safety/privacy of the games your want your Ss to play? Check this out: https://t.co/l0cAvuuHBV
Just purchased this and I am working on it as well. Love LEGO stop motion right now for storytelling. https://t.co/AzjZOlsy7c
you could also use wii bowling
we are getting to the free play mode so we can use multiple characters in different lands
A2: We've used dice rolling during simulations to add tension.
Trying to work on the same! Let me know what ideas you have--trying to make college comp class more fun

I'm doing word count challenges this year. Ss get hung up on a rough draft when they need to just WRITE! https://t.co/9rOAM3x1R0
A2: It can be as simple as creating a sense of competition in my adv. ELA class. Who can outwrite who? https://t.co/PLmVl8rfFj
That would be so cool! It's such a powerful set of tools.
A3: has an episode that directly addresses privacy/ethics/cyberbullying
That is SO true! All my worlds colliding! I love it! https://t.co/Tj4vmHRVO5
. Seeing all my PLNs collide. + to and BAM

Our entire sixth grade is doing a superhero theme! So excited! https://t.co/8Rf4mGKURN
am doing a superhero theme in my classroom this year- I bet my 3rd graders would love this!
A3: We use Common Sense Media
My plan for the couple weeks that are supposed to be my summer vacay
If you're wanting to use XP in class, it's a super handy program. Plus Ss get avatars. And pets!
Thanks! Especially interested in matters of
What's not fun about composition?!?!?!
Q3: What tools have you used to supplement lessons in the past?
A3: I have used NetSmartz with my students.
A3 common sense, netsmartz, current events, mantra that dig cit is cit
What exactly does gaming in the classroom mean?? Look like??
A3: 1:1 laptop school I discuss as a matter of expected behavior, keeping your laptop safe, making good choices
Woo woo! We love to hear that
That's so fun! I'm sure it was highly motivating!
Chiming late after the news cast, bt found this tool 7 deadly sins. Provocative bt impactful https://t.co/yn4JKlkl9c
A3Flocabulary has a good lesson
We have used scratch to make our own games
A3: has some lessons that I've used with the young kiddos (K-4)
A4 That losing isn't the end of the world. Frustration/Whining doesn't advance, but learning the pattern will
A4 planning, collaboration, inventiveness.
For some, it's Ss earning "game" points alone or as team. Others integrate games to teach content/skills https://t.co/98fqvBnnqL
What exactly does gaming in the classroom mean?? Look like??
A3 has some videos too appropriate for younger kids.
Rough draft is sentences from pre-writing...it IS rough. Crazy what Ss make important to get perfect.
Have to check out early! Have a great night everyone!
It is very provocative so know your kids, but it's an impact piece that couples well with a deeper discussion.
A4: My school is certified with
A4 Also, sometimes, when faced w/ frustration, its good to step back away from the challenge, return later
A4 teamwork, communication
A5 teaching kids at a young age that online is a tool and can help you connect and grow rather than a scary place
I'll be honest, tho, speaking about VideoGames in general, not edu-centered games.
A3 sorry it's that I was thinking of with the videos.
I'll need to watch more of it then. I teach 17- and 18-year-olds, so I tend to go a bit edgier.
But I think it can apply to education-centered gamification too
Would like development to be accessible for making our own is doing awesome for Ed
A4 perseverance, attention to detail, critical and deductive thinking, planning
From a brief glimpse I got of opening vid,I think that's a good age range
A4 No facebooking and driving. Teens think it's okay since it's facebooking not texting...aughhh
A4: I think that you can use some form of game to teach almost anything.
A4: My sons (grades 3 & 5) learn lots from Minecraft about respecting digital property-lessons transferable to other digital areas
so important in all of learning to
the teens and the issue of texting while driving is something I wish all high schools addressed.
we have to remember that there is a difference between game based learning and gamification too.
I've heard about using in the classroom. I teach 3rd. Any ideas how to implement it in the classroom?
A4 Also collaboration esp. when Ss play same game. Learn to bounce off ideas each other, make friends
A4 I run a class where students use RPGMaker to learn about writing & storytelling
I wish we had Minecraft, and so cool learning from your kids
A5: I think that being given a choice instead of just being told what to do makes Ss think about it more and make better choices.
Ss build a city and have to write to explain it to you . .
Agreed! State Farm has a great program that addresses it! Lots of schools participate & earn points https://t.co/Ipn8T5FByM
the teens and the issue of texting while driving is something I wish all high schools addressed.
A5 Ss learn choice making in a safe environment rather than in rl with life changing consequences.
and I created an immersive month long ARG on privacy & online security.
the confusion and interchanging of terms confuses
A5 turning on chat and texting amongst classmates during digital gaming allows ss to better able to cope with it on their own.
Q5: How can giving choice thru gaming teach Ss to be more successful digital citizens?
Purpose of is to empower Ss to think critically. RPGs on DigCit model in a safe space. Ts still need to deepen connectns
A5 most students have tons of choice online outside of school, need to model and guide positive choice
We don't have the EDU, but my own kids love it! 10yo son is building a Target today for 12yo daughter! LOL
A5 Choice allows Ss a place to try and explore what they think they might like without being real, but seems real.
Do either of you have a link for more info?? https://t.co/LYx8DOh5aR
and I created an immersive month long ARG on privacy & online security.
built our ARG to force them to safely "defend" their privacy within the game mechanics
A5: I think Ss learn better when they come up with the idea themselves, instead of being told what to do.
A5: Ss need opportunities to practice being on social media in a safe way so that when they ARE on it they know how to be digcit
A5: like anything, kids need to practice skills in a safe environment
yes! Prepare students for the real world. You can’t ban them from doing things
Margaret from Surrey BC here, sidekick to
On my way into traffic. No tweeting and driving. Thanks for letting me drop in you all inspire me. Can only imagine being your S.
I'd rather they make mistakes in my classes and on an imaginary situation than in real world
Thanks so much for all you've shared!!
I'd like to design something similar -maybe choose your own adventure style
A6 I have not yet. I'd like to learn more about badges. I do know edmodo uses them.
A6: Our district uses Dreambox, which has badges, students seem to really enjoy that aspect of learning.
I earned one for participating in . It was fun because you had to be there all day to earn it.
Absolutely! With I assume Ss will make mistakes, so I have a plan w/ how I'll address them. https://t.co/lafezm6sTA
I'd rather they make mistakes in my classes and on an imaginary situation than in real world
A6 I really don’t get badging. Don’t use it and don’t feel like it truly makes a difference in learning.
Hi Margaret! Thanks for jumping in!!
A6 I got one for an edcamp I was in.
not to mention, someone is present to point out bad behavior, how to improve.
i haven't either, but I really liked guide badges as a kid, may be something 2 it
A6: I don't have much experience with badging.
I think of it as a mini award for being successful in a specific subject area.
A6 common sense educator, planning on going for Google certs maybe try for ADE also present at confs
A6: I love the opportunities for badging in my personal life. badges users for completing workout challenges
Q6: What activities have you participated in where you've earned badges?
A6 I got my Google edu cert partially because I wanted the badge for mybemail
A6: I see a lot of it in . Decals for computers. At , LOTS of ribbons added to nametags...same idea.
A6: Planning to use badges in ARG to give students incentive/freedom to explore different challenges
I've collected "ribbons" at conferences for different things "diva" I don't think they work for everyone, but they work for some
I get that, but why does learning something have to have a badge/reward attached? Questioning the premise.
A6 I think badges, like most rewards, will be same Ss getting. Need to reward all Ss somehow.
I think a lot of it has to do with people not making the badges meaningful. Badges should let you DO something.
Totally agree with this! Works for some, not for all. I think that can be said w/anything in classroom https://t.co/075E2xw0BU
I've collected "ribbons" at conferences for different things "diva" I don't think they work for everyone, but they work for some
great idea for no tech or low tech options.
true, my own kid is not at all motivated by badges. refuses to participate if badging involved
why do I do 5Ks hoping for a medal? I like the reminder that I can do it and it encourages me
How do you motivate Ss that "badges" don't work for??
“Badging” in every area of our lives is getting out of hand. Soon these the lustre of these little rewards will wear off too.
I don't think learning HAS to--just that some are motivated by it and it's a matter of pride.
A7 giving them a certificate to complete the lesson
A7 "Badging" "Grades" they're all incomplete extrinsic motivators - what matters is freedom to learn and produce thru passion
Interesting. What does motivate your own kid at school?
A7: Recognizing them for the good choices they make.
well said, badging can feel manipulative
find out what they like and use that. extra recess time is always a fav. or a pass on 2 homework ?s.
It's based on the Bartle Taxonomy of Players. Trying to create engagement for diverse players
I am on the fit bit band wagon too for three years now. Medals were exciting at 1st. Not anymore.
Perhaps badging needs to be streamlined and given for bigger accomplishments, not just for completion?
interests and choice.passionate learner. skipped 2 grades. feels extrinsic rewards are manipluation
Well, it's about that time for me. G'night! Thanks for letting me lurk!
A7 as a MS teacher I don't think I would use badges with all students need to stay current, I prefer meaningful convos
Positive attention motivates, we just have to find what form motivates each student.
I used badges to try to motivate Ss to continue to work hard as the year came to a close. I think the motive of using them matters
Hopefully, there will be something as engaging once the badging system wears out, lol.
I just wonder, is the joy and excitement over the learning it the badge/medal? .
